'known for her intelligence'

Well that sentence in the introduction strikes me as quite odd, as most people would not associate 'intelligence' when someone mentions 'Shakira'. And IQ 140 is not so high that it would be an interesting fact on its own. Remove?

That's about 98th percentile.

I would think so. Nevertheless, the fact that she speaks five languages is not such a big deal, at least outside the US. --201.73.169.229 13:21, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

An IQ of 140 is above average, but not spectacular. Additionally, the citation for this "fact" is an entertainment magazine that anecdotally mentions how she "reportedly has an IQ of 140." Due to the irrelevance of the information and the lack of credible sources, I believe this reference should be removed. Brash 18:21, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

how is that meant to edify me? 140 is considered 'genius level' and qualifies her for membeship in mensa. that is notable. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.125.110.223 (talk) 16:34, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Shakira's verbal IQ may be much higher than 140. IQ is a combined math/verbal measure-- but many people with a strong verbal IQ will score far lower in math. (People high in both verbal and math IQ are much more rare).

Hence Shakira's math/verbal average of 140 may be hiding a far higher verbal IQ-- if her math abilities are left out of the average.

The fact that she started writing poetry at age 4 also suggests that her verbal IQ (with the math score left out) is considerably higher than 140.

Sean7phil (talk) 17:54, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Are you saying that singers cannot do good in math? Because, as explained, speaking 5 languages is not something uncommon. And how do you base this belief that mathematical and verbal abilities rarely walk together? From my experience innately smart people usually excel in several areas(if not most or all).. Those who excel in just one, do so because that was the one thing where they did relatively slightly better from beginning, and so they invested their time and energy on that area, eventually standing out. I also think that 140 is not espectacular, and Mensa too is not spectacular(they should only accept people above 160 :p). And I disapprove this culture of evaluating people based solely on their IQ anyways, even though I benefit from it :D Infinito (talk) 16:49, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Although I'm a strong Shakira fan myself, I think that the shakira fans are painting too nice a portrait for shakjira, to the extent that false facts are being made up to make her seem perfect. Catsmartie (talk) 05:24, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

But she is perfect. :) Phil_Nolte (talk) 11:12, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

Both only child AND older brother?

Currently, the article says both "She is the only child of Nidya del Carmen Ripoll Torrado, a Colombian of Spanish and Italian ancestry, and William Mebarak Chadid, of Lebanese descent." and "At the age of eight, after an older brother was killed in a motorcycle accident (she was only two when this happened), Shakira wrote her first song entitled "Tus gafas oscuras" ("Your dark glasses")." Was she an only child, or did she have an older brother? (It's possible that she had an older half-brother, and is the only child of Nidya and William. But that should be given with a reference.) Chip Unicorn (talk) 00:22, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps since her older brother died she became an only child (at age two).

Descent

She is the youngest of eight siblings of Niday del Carmen Ripoll Torrado, a Colombian of Spanish and Italian ancestry, and William Mebarak Chadid, of Lebanese and Macedonian descent. If true, the source should be mentioned. I've been reading a few websites and comments, many of them talking about her Catalan mother and her Lebanese father. The surname Ripoll is certainly Catalan, so is her mother a Catalan migrant to Colombia or a Colombian with a Catalan father? Same thing for her father, is he a Colombian of Lebanese descent or a Lebanese migrant to Colombia? The whole sentence looks vague and unreliable. --Purplefire (talk) 11:34, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

True, Ripoll is 100% catalan. Trrado is Spanish, so there are few chances her mother is from Italy... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.50.20.193 (talk) 10:34, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Plaigurism?

I've heard that one of Shakira's songs sounds exactly like a Testament song, and was written significantly after the Testament song was written. I don't know which Testament song, or which of Shakira's songs, so if someone has more info on this that would be great. Sorry I don't know more about it, but I'm pretty sure there's something to this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.16.71.212 (talk) 05:48, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Yes, Shakira does have a great vocal ability. In fact, she's a speech level singer just like Mariah Carey. She sings while she dances too so it's hard for people to tell since she's out of breath most of the time. --69.224.122.230 (talk) 04:19, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Shakira does have tremendous vocal range and stamina as mentioned, while dancing. With many stars lip syncing Shakira needs a nod on her vocal ability. (70.80.173.220 (talk) 23:28, 29 March 2009 (UTC))

the N1 singles are false

Joeys112 (talk) 15:35, 16 April 2008 (UTC) the section "Number-one singles" is false, for example las de la intuicion was never a number one hit in Canada, Italy, France It didnt even chart in those country being a spanish song, and the rest of its peaks are absolutely wrong. Im not talking just about this song , many have false peak positions and what shows that this have been an act of "vandalism"; if you see the total number of n1 hits in each country and check the bottom of the column youll see that the numbers are wrong , for example europe, germany, portugal, japan ..

The "Sexuality" section

Please, could someone edit or delete that section? The majority of it seems to be based on opinion, which infringes upon the standards of Wikipedia. Also, it is sloppily written. On a personal note, I find the implication that the music video of "Whenever, Wherever" was Shakira's first to endear viewers very insulting. She was indisputably rolling out successful music videos LONG before then.

Songwriting and samples

I think the reason your contributions were repeatedly deleted was that they were totally unreferenced, and thus effectively your own point of view. Saying that they were "empirical observation" just underlines this, because you're really just saying "I listened to them and I think they sound the same". Putting this kind of material into Wikipedia will fall foul either of WP:NPOV or WP:NOR and someone will almost certainly revert it. And because it touches on the work of a living person, the article is a sensitive subject (see WP:BLP), so any suggestion of negative behaviour - thinly veiled accusations of plagiarism, for example - will almost certainly be reverted if it's not supported by credible references.

Thanks for ask people to come here to have a discussion about this topic. I have been explaning for a long while my point and many people understood it.
I think they made a mistake in this page http://shakira.com/discography/index/album/albumId/7/tagName/Albums where they say Laundry Servide sales are 20 million. People say that BMI report is old but the second source they use to say that sales are 20 million is from the end of 2007, like the BMI report. It is impossible with todays market situation that this album has sold 7 millions in the last 2 years.
Almost every source says that Shakira's total sales are over 50 million. If you add 4 million Pies Descalsos, 10 million ¿ Donde Están los ladrones?, 20 million Laundry Service, 4 million Fijación Oral Vol. , 8 Million Oral Fixation Vol. 2, 5 million MTV Unplugged, 3,5 million Live & off the Record, 1 million The Remixes, 3.5 million Grandes Éxitos and 0.5 million Oral Fixation Volumes 1&2 that will make in total almost 60 million albums. That is why I think 20 million for Laundrey Service seems to be to hight. Sorry for my english.--Albes29 (talk) 17:26, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
I personally believe we should take the 13M source. Why? Because the 20M source is a primary source, which is discouraged in WP. Also, artists may have a tendency to slightly boost their own sales numbers. That is my 2 cents. --> RUL3R*flaming | *vandalism 18:51, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
That is why I think we should believe in BMI report. Lets wait until Eurotop1 (talk) gives his opinion.--Albes29 (talk) 19:17, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
Albes29, it's your own opinion. I don't think that they made mistake on the page listed above. How they made such mistake? The BMI report is tied with old biography of Shakira. Why old? Because in the beginning of 2003, the sales of Laundry Service were 13 million already. Biography's article on Shakira's website until 2003 hasn't changed since that time aside last events. And then in 2005 the sales boosted, when double Oral Fixation project released, and all Shakira's albums were reissued to help to promote Oral Fixation project. Thus, the sales of all albums increased and there are no amazing, that sales of Laundry Service were increased to 20 million in 2007. Shakira's website cannot boost her sales, because these are two different sources. There are two reliable sources that confirm such case. The fact that sales are not just 50 million albums, as sources stated that sales are OVER 50 million. Hence there are no doubts in album's sales. Eurotop1 (talk) 07:22, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Definitely, the sales were boosted. It's true. Even in today's market situation. Remember, how Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway album hugely sold to 12 million, or Nelly Furtado's Loose to 7 million. I can agree that market situation has changed since the end of 2007, when digital downloads grasped the world music market. Borkan85 (talk) 07:34, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
The BMI report is from 2007 and they said 13 million, and I don't think they are using old numbers. If you find an official source that say that sales are 20 million I will agree. Since her website says in her biography that it is 13 million I think we should keep that. At the beginning of 2003 her sales were 10 million not 13 million, then more than 3 million with the actual market situation sound better than 7 million more. This article is from billboard in 2003: http://www.allbusiness.com/retail-trade/miscellaneous-retail-retail-stores-not/4643930-1.html. Thanks--Albes29 (talk) 17:53, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Ok. First of, everybody just WP:CHILL for a minute. Second, primary sources are discouraged, so, lets please try not to quote Shakira's official website if it is not absolutely necessary. Third, Wikipedia is based on verifiability, which requires reliable sources, and I believe current consensus is that BMI is a much more reliable source. That consensus can change, of course. But if you happen to be right on your statement you should be able to find a reliable source that can uphold it. Until then, please leave the current statement. Remember, this is a work in progress and we have no deadline. Please verify your statement with a source that is more recent and then it will be welcomed. Pronunciation

Okay. Qualcuno75, what are you trying to do? Do you feel something is misspelled? Google translate can not be used as a reference for anything, as it is not reliable. We need a reference that verifies the pronunciation of name of the Colombian entertainer Shakira, not the word "Shakira" ~ ς ح д r خ є ~ 20:26, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Basically, according to many sources, Shakira was named after the Arabic word for grateful/thankful. Therefore, if you translate "thankful" or "grateful" into Arabic you get شاكرة (shakira). The article has شكيرة (also pronounced shakira). The 2nd version doesn't appear to be a word, but the 1st one is and does indeed mean grateful/thankful, therefore the 1st appears to be the correct version and the 2nd appears to be either an unofficial transliteration from English to Arabic or perhaps a misspelling. It's not really important, but I'll leave this here if anyone wants to confirm or refute this. --Qualcuno75 (talk) 06:52, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
There's an interwiki to her page on the Arabic Wikipedia, which uses yet another spelling: ar:شاكيرا. I don't know if any of the editors here read Arabic (I don't); if not, I figure we should trust the editors of Arabic Wikipedia. FWIW, شاكيرا gets almost 3 million google hits, many of which appear to be to do with Shakira (inasmuch as they contain pictures of her or refer to the titles of her songs in English); شكيرة gets about 40,000, again apparently about Shakira; شاكرة gets 300,000 hits, which don't seem to refer to the musician Shakira. Maybe Arabic-language media (perhaps unaware of the origins of Shakira's name) have decided to directly transliterate the English or Spanish pronunciation of the name, rather than using the similar Arabic word? If that is the case, and the standard Arabic transliteration is not directly related to the Arabic root of her name, we probably shouldn't include it in the lede, any more than we would include any other transliteration. Shakira sings in Latin?

"Shakira later stated that the album will now be a bilingual project, which will contain Spanish, English, and Latin songs.[64]

Shakira is known for many things, singing in Latin is not one of them. I can't see any sign that bilingual refers to anything other than English and Spanish. Please fix. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.184.16.249 (talk) 14:15, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Semi-Hispanophone countries, and many non-Spanish-speaking countries, especially the United States

What on earth is a Semi-Hispanophone country? The first interpretation that comes to mind would be countries whose main language is not Spanish, but in which Spanish is spoken by a large minority. The United States comes to mind, but the sentence above precludes this possibility. Or is it a country that speaks a "semi-Spanish" language? What would that language be? Better avoid the term and just say "Spanish-speaking" countries. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.197.250.19 (talk) 21:10, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Her name is actually Arabic! Written شاكرة, Šākira in transcription, and [ʃæːkɪra] in IPA, meaning: thankful, greatful (woman). Maybe one could add that, because right now we only have the meaning, and that's somewhere in the middle of the article.

Btw. why at the beginning of the article it says "Spanish name"... Even within the article the name is acknowledged to be Arabic! I think I'm going to delete that... --Arny (talk) 14:14, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

I think we have a bit of a problem here. Her first name, "Shakira" definitely isn't a Spanish but an Arabic name, yet she has two family names the spanish way. Now, from my point it was incorrect to say she has a spanish name considering the origin of the first name. IANVS views the full name which was constructed the Spanish way as relevant. I'm not sure which is right now... Not much harm risked here though, so I guess this is okay... :) --Arny (talk) 15:06, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

what about the criticism done about her music, I quote "Red Card for bad taste.[...] This leads to sonic vomit such as Shakira's 'Waka Waka (This Time For Africa),' perhaps the stupidest official song for any major sporting event ever."[82] Amos Barshad from New York Magazine said "The song is a perfectly innocuous bit of inspiration pop — 'when you fall get up, oh oh/and if you fall get up, eh eh,' Shakira suggests at one point — with a few vague nods toward what would be identified by a majority of Western-pop-reared individuals as 'world music.' Suggestions

Hi everyone. I have noticed how this article has many images. I like a good image here and there, but we need to remove some of them. I have noticed that in Good Articles and Featured Articles that one image is used for each section. With this article, we should use good candid or free images of Shakira that represent her well at that time. I don't think album or single covers look too good or neutral in this article. It seems a bit like an ad.

Also, I feel like She Wolf and Sale el Sol could have their own sections instead of being merged together. I mean, for the Oral Fixation era it is more reasonable, but I feel like She Wolf and Sale el Sol need to be independent from one another since one era is different from the other compared to the Fixations era.

For the trivia section, I was thinking about moving those facts to their appropriate sections or articles.

Tell what you guys think. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.109.147.18 (talk) 15:39, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

Shakira has sold between 50 to more 60 million albums

What should we say about the worldwide sales figures for Shakira? Various sources give various numbers.

Definitely, "Le Figaro" (2010) does not match the others and, is used in this article. Turning to article "Shakira", since at least this version (as 12 January), says: "[...] sold over 70 million albums worldwide.[11][12][13][14]" The reference [11] is El Informador from México, but the problem is that the other references are more credible: [13] from (The Age = 60 million and is in 2011) and finally, [14] from (The Indian Express = 50 million and is in 2011).

As seen in the historial, only El Informador "from" Mexico to refer to the alleged 70 million albums Shakira, and the others said the exact opposite ([13] and [14]). This, of course, remained so and most likely is as was used as a primary source for all sources that come; Recall that until credibility sources have been based on Wikipedia, without seeing if they are true or fallacies, The Irish Times (from 1859) for example. So I think we have to put: Shakira has sold between 50 to more 60 million albums and put the references the years around this period; and put: only with its singles, has sold nearly 50 million copies in accordance with PR Newswire and Gigwise; though I think is a sale too exaggerated, especially because Shakira has only about 40 million certified productions (albums, dvds, singles.... etc) and, I do not think Shakira outperforms to Madonna in singles; omit..., by common sense and to be impartial, but if someone considers it necessary, we would need a census. 156 Conjunction Sun - Sun Positive aspect: It's an excellent aspect for a union because the two people go remarkably well together. They are made to understand each other, to complement each other and to support each other.
-115 Opposition Sun - Saturn Negative aspect: They are certainly not made to live together. Saturn is too harsh, rigid and likes tranquility too much for the Sun. Neither will feel happy in this relationship.
-136 Square Sun - Uranus Negative aspect: Here is an aspect that speaks against any long-term understanding. At the beginning, they will appreciate each other a lot, and will have pleasure in being together but, quite quickly, this life will become unbearable with disputes, conflicts and crying replacing love.
76 Trine Sun - Pluto Positive aspect: It's love-at-first-sight, the great passion: they will be drawn to each other like two magnets, they will always have to see and touch each other. Very good sexual understanding, typically very passionate. It must be said that this type of relationship won't last forever, it won't develop into a quiet and tender love and even less so into friendship. One will suffer when the passion of the other dies, it will be a very difficult time to live through.
-102 Square Venus - Venus Negative aspect: A union unlikely to last.
-156 Square Mercury - Mars Negative aspect: Lots of problems can be foreseen for this couple, lacking in understanding, with ideas that are too different - and this leads to disputes. They are not made for each other.
70 Conjunction Saturn - Neptune Positive aspect: Favorable union. Neptune brings dreams to Saturn, who lacks them, and Saturn brings common sense to Neptune, who is totally without it.
69 Sextile Mars - Jupiter Positive aspect: The couple will be in harmony, even if they are different they complement each other perfectly and understand each other very well. They go well together.
53 Trine Mars - Neptune Positive aspect: A difficult union that can succeed, but could founder in lies. Be very careful.
-37 Opposition Mars - Pluto Negative aspect: Sexual passion leading to destruction. It will be very difficult to pick oneself up after such a relationship. To be avoided at all costs, nothing agreeable can come of this union.

add the arabic name of shakira

dear all Shakira's name in Arabic is شاكيرا, which is based on the Spanish / English pronounciation of the name. The correct Arabic form is rather شاكِرة /šākirah/,

which means "thankful (girl)" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.161.9.237 (talk) 06:54, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

The phonetic transcription of the name "Ripoll" is incorrect. As she specifically said in her concert in Barcelona (note 13), her second surname Ripoll is Catalan. The sound "ll" in Catalan is not /l/ l but /ʎ/. Therefore this "(pronounced: [ʃaˈkiɾa isaˈβel meβaˈɾak riˈpol])" should be changed for this "(pronounced: [ʃaˈkiɾa isaˈβel meβaˈɾak riˈpoʎ])." Please change this:

known professionally as Shakira (English /ʃəˈkɪərə/,[3] Spanish: [ʃaˈkiɾa]

To this:

known professionally as Shakira (English /ʃəˈkɪərə/,[3] Arabic: [ʃaˈkiɾa]

because Shakira is an Arabic name meaning "thankful" and "ʃaˈkiɾa" is actually the correct Arabic pronunciation. Shakira isn't a Spanish name. Shakira is half Arab as well which would explain why she has an Arabic name. Therefore the part about the "Spanish" pronunciation is incorrect 2.218.16.254 (talk) 18:09, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

Not done: The likely fact that her name, which indeed is Arabic, is pronounced [ʃaˈkiɾa] in Arabic, does not exclude that it is identically pronounced in Spanish. Sam Sailor Sing 11:08, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

Inflated sales

According to Rolling Stone (2014) Shakira has sold only 60 million records ww ([3]). She has only at this moment nearly 40 million certified units in the world.

It is necessary removed the inflated sales and hoaxes. There are many variations in sales of Shakira (by years, by the media), maybe is by the "Wiki magic". Other possible page locations for the future

I noticed Shakira (singer) was created as a redirect here in 2003. Seeing as how she also writes songs, dances, choreographs, and produces records, I was thinking Shakira (music) or something like that.

In the long run of encyclopedias one must wonder if this deserves the space which could be used by Shakira (disambiguation). I realize even since the 1990 album Magia she's just gone by that name, but Shakira (comics) has been around since 1980. In the grand aspect of history, a portion of the massive DC Comics universe involved in multiple epic tales is going to have more longevity, because the comic character will keep getting used in comics after the musician has retired.

Dropping the middle name, Shakira Mebarak Ripoll (someone made this redirect in 2009) is also a possibility as a WP:NATDAB since it's unclear to me whether it is acceptable to drop the paternal or maternal surname. Ranze (talk) 01:45, 5 March 2016 (UTC)

Thanks LaGusi506 (talk) 06:17, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

@LaGusi506: Hi. The spelling in question seems to be correct. The ″Columbia″ refers to Columbia Records and not the country Colombia. Bennv3771 (talk) 10:52, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

Instruments:

In addition to the aforementioned instruments, Shakira also plays the sampler. She played it throughout the El Dorado World Tour for "Chantaje". I believed it was excluded because that person thought it's a type of keyboard. Sampler IS NOT a keyboard. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Petertshomela (talkcontribs) 15:19, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

Parents nationalities

The article is lacking the nationalities of her parents.

1- Her father was an American national of Lebanese descent.

2- Her mother is a Colombian national.

You'll need sources for this, and the prose you want added. Thanks. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 15:21, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

Oh. Thank you Sir ScottishFinnishRadish

Shakira sales

On the Anghami page (the most important musical medium in the Middle East) and on the Celebraty Net Worth page it is specified that the Colombian singer has sold more than 125 million discs mixed with albums and singles. If we consider that Laundry Service sold 15 million copies, SHAKIRA sold 1.2 million, The oral fixation collection sold between them 12 million copies, Pies descalzos sold 5 million copies. MTV Unplugged sold 2 million copies. ¿Donde están los ladrones? sold 6-8 million copies. Sale el sol sold 4 million copies. She wolf sold 2 million copies. El dorado sold 2 million total copies. A total of 50 million sales that is adding the sales of singles of Hips don't lie with 12 million solid sales. Whenever Wherever with 10 million, Waka Waka with 10 million sales, Beautiful Liar sold 7 million sales, Torture sold more than 6 million copies. Try everything sold between 7-9 million copies. She wolf sold 7 million records. Can't remember to forget you sold 7 million records. Lalala sold 5 million copies. And blackmail sold 8 million total sales. underneath your clothes sold 4 million sales and Rabiosa sold 5 million copies. In total, it sold about 139 million records. That taking as sources pages like Billboard and reliable sources without counting streaming.

I think we should raise Shakira's position. I wait for an answer. Alejandro Ortiz 15 (talk) 22:12, 13 March 2021 (UTC)

@Alejandro Ortiz 15: Sure, she sold 75 million records or slightly more than that figure, but its preferred you must ask this matter at the List of best-selling music artists; which seems tbh doesn't meet the requirements to have an inmediate upgrade due some key factors. Also, your breakdown to point out a figure as high as 139 million give us an "outlier number". Many or all are simply inflated numbers (it's more evident in some cases than others). Take the example of "Rabiosa" a 2011 song that you claimed have 5 million copies, when certified units/available sales are under 500,000 units overall. "Whenever Wherever" or "Hips don't lie" both have a solid numbers in certified units/available sales but the gap from claimed sales are notorious. I also noticed many of her worldwide claims sales, like the examples you have provided, came from Spanish, French, Portuguese or Italian Wikipedias, were those of her sales reported were vandalized or added with questionable sources, giving us circular inflated figures since then. Regards, --Apoxyomenus (talk) 23:23, 13 March 2021 (UTC)

Okay, it seems to me that you should still check these links where some media claim at least 125 million copies by the singer since only Hips don't lie, Whenever Wherever and Waka Waka give very large numbers. If you can give an answer it would be very helpful. https://www.ibtimes.co.uk/shakira-turns-40-waka-waka-views-net-worth-facebook-likes-other-career-milestones-1604517 This link is from IBT and states the amount of sales by the singer. In any case, continue wrong, they tell me. https://www.thejournal.ie/readme/shakira-forbidden-from-appearing-in-videos-with-men-1355896-Mar2014/ this is other link. You can check and let me know if it's still wrong or okay because the source of the sales of 75 million is not very verifiable considering that it has high album sales and has a song with gigantic sales. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alejandro Ortiz 15 (talkcontribs) 00:14, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

Sources copy the same inflated idiotic sales figures from each other, that doesn't mean Shakira has actually sold 125 million records. This the same source which claims 125 million records in sales for Shakira also claims 20 million for the album Laundry Service. How can that album have sold 20 million when the worldwide available certified sales is totaling 8.4 million? 4 Million from Europe, 3 million from US, 500,000 from Canada, 420,000 from Australia, 300,000 from Mexico and some 175,000 units from Brazil, New Zealand, Argentina combined. These figures are all inflated by Shakira's record company and News outlets all copy them from each other.--Harout72 (talk) 01:11, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

Source claiming Nida del Carmen Ripoll Torrado is "half Italian"

Clearly nonsense so removing it. Php2000 (talk) 23:41, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

Additional source on the matter. The "Catalan" origin seems to be more distant than she implies. Any claims of "Italian" ancestry is also marketing. Her mother is just a regular Colombian from the coast with no non-Spanish surnames, no particular lineage and no recent immigrant origin. https://www.eluniversal.com.co/farandula/shakira-y-sus-raices-bolivarenses-243367-PWEU352296 --Php2000 (talk) 23:55, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

Yep. No Italian heritage or known surnames. Just a marketing gimmick. LATimes contradicted by serious Colombian research into her background and ancestry.--Huasteca (talk) 14:01, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

She has claimed to have an ancestor with the surname "Pisciotti". If she has any Italian roots, it's likely distant, and through a maternal ancestor, probably explaining why the surname wasn't passed down. The "El Universal" source doesn't give a full breakdown of the two surnames her maternal grandparents, great-grandparents, etc had. They only give her mothers surnames as "Ripoll Torrado" and a story about four Ripoll brothers who went to Colombia. I think it would be fine to say that she also states/claims she has partial/distant Italian roots.[7] Clear Looking Glass (talk) 06:30, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

Sold records figure should change form 85 million to 125 million.

The grammy museum is running an exhibit on Shakira and they show a photo with info claiming she’s sold 125 million records. The current Wikipedia shows only 85 million records. I found this source which supports the claim as well.

Article with reputed Shakira sales.

  •  Not done. None of your suggested sources is qualified to over-rule the existing sources we have which are based on official sales certifications plus an estimate for countries that don't keep track of sales. A jump of 50% higher is not warranted. Binksternet (talk) 04:06, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
