Updates on the section on tax avoidance

The section detailing how Starbucks has been controversial because of alleged tax avoidance would be more up-to-date if it mentioned how this has been an issue that has been in the news in early December 2012, as on this BBC news report:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-20582041 ACEOREVIVED (talk) 14:41, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Original location

Seeing as there was just an unsourced edit to the info on the original location, it seems like a good opportunity to try to settle this once and for all. This website claims, based on information in Starbucked, that the 2000 Western Ave address is correct for 1971-1974, and that the downtown location was moved to 1912 Pike Place in 1974 when the building was razed. The article currently claims 1976 for this move. Could there have been a two-year hiatus while the company searched for and developed the new location? The 2000 Western Ave address is at least substantiated by this discussion at Talk:Seattle, although the exact dates are still questionable.

The book claims further that two additional locations had opened by, making the Pike Place location the fourth physical location, albeit the spiritual successor to the first location. Not sure how we should handle this in the article, if the claim is substantiated. Does anyone have a copy of Starbucked to verify the 1974 move? Ibadibam (talk) 18:42, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Hoax letter

The section about the hoax letter needs a rewrite or removal. The focus should be on the impact on the chain - i.e. demonstrations and stores shutting down. If the hoax letter can be directly linked to those events, that link needs to be very clear. If not, it deserves only a minor mention in the section. John Vandenberg (chat) 00:10, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

Regarding this recent edit, I totally get the motivation for wanting to further discredit Winkler, but his having admitted the hoax is sufficient, and there's probably no need to give undue weight to his political views by adding a quotation that's not relevant to this article's topic. Ibadibam (talk) 23:10, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Starbucks girl spreads it wide, but not in this article...

Why is the logo where you could see her crotch missing from this article? http://www.brandautopsy.com/images/various-small/sbux_logo_8792.jpg ~ Agvulpine (talk) 09:30, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Founder?

It says: "Starbucks' chairman and founder, Howard Schultz, has talked about making sure growth does not dilute the company's culture..."

Does "founder" have a technical meaning here? Because in its ordinary meaning, this contradicts the History section which says that Howard Schultz was originally an employee of Starbucks, making him not a founder. 68.170.190.61 (talk) 12:30, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Release is a transitive verb.

". Its first store released in San Bernardino" I guess this is supposed to mean that its first store opened in San Bernardino. But maybe the writer was trying to say some-thing else. Kdammers (talk) 02:34, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

1987 Logo/Edit Request 1/24/14

  • An image of the Starbucks logo used from 1987 to 1992 needs to be uploaded to Wikipedia.
  • This logo can be found on Logopedia and I'll say what the logo looks like.
  • This logo is almost the same as the 1992 to 2011 logo, except that the logo has a lighter green color to it and the double tailed mermaid is more zoomed out. --24.147.1.197 (talk) 21:00, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Jacob Chesley

Update needed

According to this source as on 13 February, Starbucks has enters its 64th country. While in the locations section still shows Starbucks only available in 62 countries as with the last year statistics. — "ʀᴜ" ɴᴏᴛ ʀᴜssɪᴀɴ ᴡʜᴜᴛ? 23:32, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

Controversy section

Does no one think the length of the controversy section is ridiculous? I do and it is indicative of everything wrong with Wikipedia. 216.178.108.235 (talk) 21:22, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

Do you think it's too long, or too short? How do you think it could be improved? Ibadibam (talk) 23:54, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

Additionally the citation to the "operating at a loss" is a bizarre and inaccurate manifesto that really shouldn't be considered a source. I mover for a removal of this on those grounds. --71.45.56.148 (talk) 18:19, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

I've added a Google Books link to the source so it can be better examined. There's apparently market data in the source's appendices that verifies the "operating at a loss" claim, although it's not available in the Google preview. Ibadibam (talk) 23:54, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

Number of stores

This SEC filing gives a more recent count of the number of stores. Can we use it to supplant the Loxcel data we've been using? Ibadibam (talk) 23:55, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Howard Schultz's shareholdings

I'm trying to figure out what percentage of Starbucks he owns to add to the article(s). Forbes says he owns 18,689,468 shares So, what percentage is that? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:06, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

According to Yahoo! Finanace, there are 752.80 million shares outstanding. Ibadibam (talk) 18:15, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
Stocks and things are quite confusing to me. I don't know if that means 752.80 million shares are what is left after his share. And are there those other types of shares? Anyway, could you tell me what percentage of the company he owns? I'd be much obliged. Thank you. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:19, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
The number of shares outstanding is the total shares issued by the company and purchased by investors. The reported holdings of Schultz amount to 2.48% of that figure. However, Yahoo also reports that 2.53% of shares are held by insiders—about 19,025,600 shares—which would mean that there are only 336,132 other shares held by insiders. Given that a lot of Starbucks employees probably hold company stock, that quantity seems pretty low. Ibadibam (talk) 00:48, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
Hmmm, so where does that leave us? Are you saying the 2.48% is unreliable? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:39, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

Products?

I read the whole article and nowhere does it really discuss the Starbucks' products, water, sizes of cups, pastry, sandwiches, etc. And yes, I can tell the chain has something to do with coffee or coffee flavoured products, but I know from being in one or two in three countries that they offer some coffee drinks. I think the article could be improved by brief mention of the more common products.--TGC55 (talk) 17:24, 7 June 2014 (UTC) Actually the article does discuss this, but its not necessarily in the products section, just go to the other areas in the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.166.7.3 (talk) 17:01, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

South Africa?

The map doesn't have South Africa highlighted, but the table does list it under Africa. The text offers what may be an explanation of the discrepancy, but it's not clear if there's a connection. --Haruo (talk) 05:02, 13 July 2015 (UTC)

the article is simply too long for its own good

please, somebody, edit it to at least half, better third, even better, quarter of its current length. i'm not familiar enough with the subject, cannot do it. over-detailed history might go; but preserve this peculiar measurement and 'slang' part. menu part is good. and, please explain there somewhere, why they insist writing one's name on their cup? where _this_ policy originated, and is it compulsory? - i mean, it feels ever so bizarre. (myself, never been to starbucks, and if, not giving may name, if possible. will XXX do? as in olden times instead of signature by illiterate people.) sorry for this 'discussion on the subject', just wanted to show need of this explanation in the article. BirgittaMTh (talk) 12:15, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

Speaking to the putting of a person's name on the drink that they order - it is not compulsory, but it is a practice most stores try to adhere to for practical reasons. First, since most customers don't understand the jibber-jabber that makes up the drink codes written on a cup, having a name written on their cup alerts them to which drink that is being finished up as theirs - plus, calling out "JAKE, your order is ready!" gets a better response than "I have the half-caff, two pump, extra shot, nonfat, light whip mocha ready!" (Speaking from experience, not everybody can remember what they ordered in the first place, let alone be able to understand it being yelled across a busy store.) Secondly, the asking for names allows baristas to make a better business connection to their customers, since the majority of customers in a starbucks will be repeat business. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tron1763 (talkcontribs) 03:02, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

It looks like that image is covered by a CC BY NC 3.0 license, which should make it fine to upload here. I don't speak French so I can't find the attribution, which is required by the license. Can you give a little more information about the image? Also, it should be noted that there are a number of similar images available on the Commons. Ibadibam (talk) 18:02, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
Not quite - to be considered free on Wikipedia/the Commons, an image needs to be available for free commercial use. CC-BY-NC prohibits that. We'd need to claim fair use, and I don't think the image is needed in the article to warrant that.
At the same time, a simple photograph of a public domain painting counts as a reproduction of that painting, and would be also be in the public domain. Someone correct me if I'm misguided, but if the original artwork is in the public domain given its age (someone would need to investigate), the photo would also be considered to be in the public domain. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 18:24, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
This edit was reverted recently, withdrawing this following information on nautical motifs used by a successful restaurant chain in previous epochs of US social and business enterprise:
The siren image may have drawn its inspiration from the nautical motifs incorporated into the designs for the successful Childs Restaurants of the 1920s and 1930s; for example, on Coney Island Boardwalk, one location among some others of the chain with these motifs.
It is certainly not verifiable until Starbucks themselves volunteer that the notion for the logo had a source in a previous enterprise's use of design.--Laurencebeck (talk) 10:41, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

A Few Minor Updates

I made a few minor updates to this page. I updated the Starbucks ASU policy. I am a Starbucks partner and attend ASU through the College Achievement Plan via Starbucks, so I have first hand knowledge of the program. I also cited the updated version from the Starbucks website. I added brands where needed i.e. microground coffee is called VIA at Starbucks, and Evolution Fresh juices. [1] EmmaSchorr (talk) 22:26, 11 November 2015 (UTC) EmmaSchorr

Starbucks Evening stores

Why is there no mention anywhere that Starbucks has a new brand called Starbucks Evenings which is operated under the subsidiary Coffee House Holdings, Inc.? In New York the company has applied to the State Liquor Authority for licensure to sell beer and wine. They currently have two active locations the first inside Macy's Herald Square (see here) and on North 7th Street in Brooklyn (see here), one location that the license is inactive (see here) and finally 12 licenses pending at locations around the state (see here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here). Not sure if this is to be only an East Coast operation or whether it will be rolled out across the U.S. and Internationally. If someone happens to know more information please post it with appropriate references. YborCityJohn (talk) 07:52, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

Bias

Quick question, please... I used to be a partner (employee) at Starbucks. I would position myself as slightly-pro Starbucks, but closer to a neutral position. I know many facts about the company from working there and on many of the projects specifically mentioned in this entry. I find it interesting that many of the positive facts that offset the negative perceptions have no reference articles.

I'm finding many sections very negatively biased. Is Wikipedia "perception based" that if the media only reports negative news as sources, that becomes the skew of the articles? (I'm not trying to be combative, curious really.) What's the right way to help get them fixed?

Examples include:

Products > Coffee Quality

- This focuses on someone reporting the coffee is burnt. Does not refer to Starbucks' reason for roasting dark. Seems one-sided. - It would seem Coffee Quality would focus on the quality of the beans purchased from farmers - good or bad. - This article concludes with an inaccurate description of how/why brewed coffee is promoted

Environmental and social policies > Coffee and Farmer Equity practices / Fair trade sections

Starbucks has always purchased coffee directly from farmers. They built relationships with their farmers to help ensure the quality of the coffee. Starbucks has traditionally treated farmers better and offered more than the Fair Trade pricing for coffee. For some reason, no one has cited that fact making the sentence seem dubious.

The Fair trade section makes it sound like Starbucks only started to be more responsible in 2000. Due to pressure to offer/serve Fair trade Starbucks did provide some Fair trade coffee. However, (this is a good point)... Starbucks has trouble finding enough Fair trade that is also high-quality. (I wished Starbucks never caved to serving Fair trade because it created this situation where the perception is the rest of their coffee isn't as good, however, they should have always promoted Better Than Fair Trade - that was opinion, I know

Thanks! - Paul IdeaSandbox (talk) 14:22, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

"Gun controversy"

No explanation for this knee-jerk revert.[1] I wrote, "no one calls them that)". Check the sources and highlight the ones that call these guys "gun rights advocates". Mostly, they seem to be nobodies. But please dont just revert. Felsic2 (talk) 03:51, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

The reversion was correct, and I have repeated it. They weren't just "opponents", they were self-described gun rights advocates, as clearly indicated in the source. General Ization Talk 04:02, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
Which source? THere are three. One is a dead link. Felsic2 (talk) 04:25, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
Neither of these include "gun rights advocates" [2][3] Do you have access to the dead Detroit News article? Please post the text that includes the term. Felsic2 (talk) 04:32, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
How would you interpret the descriptions "2A supporters" and "the 2nd Amendment crowd"? What do you think that means? (If one supports the Second Amendment, what does one advocate if not gun rights?) The headline of the Detroit News article (though now a dead link inaccessible even at archive.org) was "Mich. gun advocates support Starbucks' open-carry policy". What do you think "gun advocates" means? General Ization Talk 04:42, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
Let's use the term the sources use. Felsic2 (talk) 04:44, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
I've changed it to "gun advocates". Felsic2 (talk) 04:45, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
The text already says "as a sign of Second Amendment support", so that part is covered. Felsic2 (talk) 04:47, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
"Gun advocates" implies that they are in favor of guns for all people at all times. "Gun rights advocates" is more accurate, more nuanced, and more neutral. We don't call gun control advocates "anti-gun advocates" either (nor should we). Faceless Enemy (talk) 01:35, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
What do the sources call them? I see "the 2nd Amendment crowd"[4] "gun activist", "gun-heads"[5]. Is "Gun rights advocate" a euphemism for "gun head"? Well, if you say so. Felsic2 (talk) 15:36, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
None of these sources are very good. Felsic2 (talk) 15:36, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
You seem to be lacking in WP:NPOV. Where our sources reflect ambiguity, we should present the most reasonable (and neutral) interpretation based on the totality of the sources. Given the references to the protesters as advocates for a strict interpretation of the Second Amendment, we should refer to them as gun rights advocates. Whether they (also) happen to enjoy shooting guns is irrelevant. General Ization Talk 15:41, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
So, in the case of a different article in which the source refers to "anti-gun" grants, should we change that to "pro-gun control"? Felsic2 (talk) 20:35, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
Definitely yes. Appears to have been done. Fixing the issue here as well. Faceless Enemy (talk) 04:47, 19 April 2016 (UTC)

"Starbucks' chairman, Howard Schultz, has talked about making sure growth does not dilute the company's culture[56]" under Corporate Governance. This statement is out of place, newly irrelevant and inaccurate, and currently lacks credibility (the link from 2006 does not provide quality evidence). The rest of this section talks about the governing structure within the company, while this statement stands alone without elaboration. Howard Shultz is no longer the chairman, making this statement inaccurate. Therefore this statement regarding the company's cultural philosophy is no longer relevant. In addition, the link is outdated (2006) while the statement seems to speak in the present (company's culture can change rapidly). The link also does not provide direct credibility for this statement. My wish is for this to be removed or rewritten and moved to a more appropriate location in the article. ☒N Not done and not likely to be done' Wall Street Journal articles are behind a paywall. The non-secure versions of these links provide at most a one paragraph lede to the reader, which is not going to help a reader with verification of the claims any better than the version behind the secure link. Wikimedia uses https and links with https are preferred. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 18:03, 8 June 2017 (UTC)
They're currently DEAD LINKS that REDIRECT to LOG IN PAGES! Just HURRY UP and CHANGE them back! 116.74.236.77 (talk) 18:10, 8 June 2017 (UTC)
They are not dead links and re-directing them to log-in pages is the Journal's right as a commercial entity. Just because they are inconvenient is no reason to change them. The http versions do not supply significantly more information than the https versions and are also mostly paywalled. 18:16, 8 June 2017 (UTC)
Seriously, they REDIRECT to log in pages now because of Bender the Bot adding the S in HTTP where it doesn't need to be, and NOW no one can read the articles themselves anymore. Why don't you change them back? 116.74.236.77 (talk) 18:33, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

holiday blend

I have been enjoying your breakfast blend for a while now and love it but this week-end i was at sam's club and seen your holiday blend and bought a box,i was very disappointed in it,it's very weak and does not have a good flavor, just my opinion, thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.106.250.199 (talk) 19:00, 23 October 2017 (UTC)

International expansion: contradictions.

There are now over 25,000 Starbucks stores as of end of 2016. Seoul, Korea alone probably has over 700 Starbucks. South Korea alone probably more than 870 Stores. I would say 900-1,000 Stores. South Korea need Starbucks Drive-Thru system in all City or City outskirt areas. Weather, people, Culture, family, friends make Starbucks very big business in Korea.

None of the countries listed in the continent columns are referenced, and some listed in there are not colored on the map, e.g. South Africa. -- Jeandré, 2011-06-18t13:43z

Semi-protected edit request on 15 November 2017

I am trying to submit another section titled "Caffeine Content in Products" after the last header in the "Products" Section in the table of contents. I understand that it is not a simple edit, but I don't plan on changing anything about the page, just adding to it. It is for a college class I am taking, and all of the information is properly sourced, so I hope someone is able to approve my edit request. My apologies for its length. I have also added a source to my information.

Extended content
=== Caffeine Content in Products ===
Starbucks offers certain beverages without caffeine made with decaffeinated espresso. Some beverages are created so that it is impossible to eliminate caffeine, such as the Cold Brew beverages, which are pre-made on site with caffeinated coffee. Starbucks’ Iced coffee is not offered as a decaffeinated beverage, but it can be replicated with their decaffeinated espresso, categorizing it as a “Decaffeinated Americano”.<ref name="Caffeine">[https://www.caffeineinformer.com/the-complete-guide-to-starbucks-caffeine Caffeine Informer]</ref>

Capolimia (talk) 16:57, 15 November 2017 (UTC)

@Capolimia: Two issues. One, is this a necessary addition to this page? I mean, lots of people want to know caffeine content of stuff but one standard we have for including something is "it's encyclopedic" and while I can't say for sure why, I just don't know that this list would be a typical addition to a typical encyclopedia. My other issue is regarding sourcing. Believe it or not, Starbucks might not be a good a source regarding itself. WP:PRIMARY is a fantastic explainer, and it includes tons of exceptions that you might consider relevant. (I also have no idea about Caffeine Informer. New Cups

Starbucks new holiday cups come with a message. The message on the new holiday cups is 'Give Good'. Starbucks began with this tradition since the year 10997. On November 1at ia when the holiday cups are served in beverages to customers. The 2017 holiday cup was made to intentionally have customers add their own special touch of color to the cup. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jessica arceo1 (talkcontribs) 07:08, 13 December 2017 (UTC) [1]

This information would require something much more substantial than a press release to be included in this article. Grayfell (talk) 08:00, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

Cafe' Mesto

If you get an au lait at Starbucks w/foam, adding enough sugar to counteract the taste of the coffee, put cinnamon, chocolate and vanilla at the top, the coffee washes through the spice and a cinnamon/sugar glob is at the bottom of the cup, which is quite yummy, although spinoffs may not have the same. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:2000:E944:B500:8569:62:61AC:C998 (talk) 10:12, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

Bias recognition for Coffee Quality 20 February 2018

I believe that the section named "Coffee Quality" is biased. Not only is the information outdated, it is promoting McDonald's and Third Wave coffee's agenda. None of the information describing the coffee is positive, to help offset the many negative connotations included in the description. It calls Starbucks coffee "appalling" "strong, but burnt and bitter enough to make your eyes water instead of open." Wikipedia is built on five pillars, one of which is "written from a neutral point of view." The section I posted below does not read in an impartial tone. Aswetland (talk) 00:23, 21 February 2018 (UTC)

Kevin Knox, who was in charge of doughnuts quality at Starbucks from 1987 to 1993, recalled on his blog in 2010 how George Howell, coffee veteran and founder of the Cup of Excellence, had been appalled at the dark roasted beans that Starbucks was selling in 1990.[42][89] Talking to the New York Times in 2008, Howell stated his opinion that the dark roast used by Starbucks does not deepen the flavor of coffee, but instead can destroy purported nuances of flavor.[42] The March 2007 issue of Consumer Reports compared American fast-food chain coffees and ranked Starbucks behind McDonald's Premium Roast. The magazine called Starbucks coffee "strong, but burnt and bitter enough to make your eyes water instead of open".[90] As reported by TIME in 2010, third wave coffee proponents generally criticize Starbucks for over-roasting beans

I would like to add a detail to products section of the Starbucks page. I see that the page has coconut milk listed as a dairy alternative. I would like to add the following:

In 2016, Starbucks began serving almondmilk as another alternative to dairy and soy. [1]

I am very sorry if I am going about this the wrong way, this is for a college course and I am a little fuzzy on the exacts of this.

Recent controversies

I added the controversy regarding the arrests in Pennsylvania. I noticed another news circulating around about a man refused entry to the bathroom for not purchasing something but another man was given access despite not purchasing anything as well. I am unsure if it's notable to include it so far, and if it is I am tempted to change the subsection title to Accusations of racism or something along those lines. Thoughts? There is nothing in the article about Starbucks being paid $7.1bn by Nestle to sell Starbucks coffee to retailers worldwide. I believe this is a major omission from the article, a change this big to the business and it's retail operation should be reported.

17th century Eastern European heraldry

Sooo .. in Eastern Europe, one can find assorted heraldry that looks like the starbucks logo. I recall seeing one particular combination: the Polish eagle in red, the Lithuanian Vytis in blue/red, and the Starbucks logo, in green, on a masonry heater, which makes me think it dates to Union of Lublin which would mean that the starbucks logo is the herald/herb of some large region or principality in modern-day Belarus or Ukraine, or thereabouts ... but its the heraldry of which principality? And why doesn't this article mention it? I don't have any photos, but here are some similar photos from other masonry heaters, same general theme: https://www.pinterest.com/linasvepstas/masonry-heaters-starbucks-logo/ 67.198.37.16 (talk) 00:13, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

Present Tense Grammar

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section.

There's some really old content on the page, especially in the Corporate governance and Products sections, that uses present or future tense grammar which should be updated to past tense:

  • In June 2009, the company announced that it would be overhauling its menu and selling salads and baked goods without high fructose corn syrup or artificial ingredients.[79] This move was expected to attract health- and cost-conscious consumers and will not affect prices.
  • In January 2008, Schultz resumed his roles as President and CEO after an eight-year hiatus, replacing Jim Donald, who took the posts in 2005 but was asked to step down after sales slowed in 2007. Schultz aims to restore what he calls the "distinctive Starbucks experience" in the face of rapid expansion. Analysts believe that Schultz must determine how to contend with higher materials prices and enhanced competition from lower-priced fast food chains, including McDonald's and Dunkin' Donuts.
  • As of November 2012, there is no intention of marketing Starbucks' products in Teavana stores
  • in January 2012, Starbucks announced a 50:50 joint venture with Tata Global Beverages called Tata Starbucks. Tata Starbucks will own and operate Starbucks outlets in India as Starbucks Coffee "A Tata Alliance". It was also opened in Colombia as well near the city of Medellin.
  • In 2009…CEO Howard Schultz says the unbranded stores are a "laboratory for Starbucks".

There's also some outdated content that should be updated:

  • As of April 2012, it is available at seven locations
  • Starbucks is planning to open[when?] its fourth African location, after South Africa, Egypt, and Morocco, in Algeria. The when tag was added in 2012, so this plan either happened or didn't
