Fair use rationale for Image:Esf.JPG

Image:Esf.JPG is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Article needs reorganization, editing

This article is being morphed by one or more unsigned authors into somewhat of an historical tangent, more on Louis Marshall, certainly of interest to the topic, than the topic itself. The unfortunate result is that the text has become unwieldy and does not read well. At this point, needs a serious overhaul for clarity, consistency & focus. Perhaps adding new sections? cross-referencing to other articles... Would benefit, as well, by further documentation of sources. DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 10:12, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

I agree, and as a result I've cut much of the superfluous additions to the "History" section. Biographical details regarding Marshall, Pinchot, etc., have very little to do with the school itself, and although the demise of Cornell's school is pertinent, every little detail about it is not. The history needs to be expanded, but about the school. When were programs added, when was major construction was done, was it awarded accolades? These things would be great additions to the "History" section. More reliable references throughout would also be great. María (habla conmigo) 12:48, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
Well done! Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 13:18, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
I'm disappointed to see that my edits were reverted by an anonymous IP without an explanation as to why. To expand on what I said previously, I think the additions were largely nonconstructive and superfluous at this article. The information may belong elsewhere. I've left them a message on their talk page, asking them to comment here. Perhaps we can come up with a compromise. María (habla conmigo) 21:05, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
I second this sentiment. The history of this nearly 100-year institution is quite fascinating. But the additional material in question would be best situated in a separate article, e.g. on "History of the New York State College of Forestry", which could bring into one place the interesting origins of forestry education in New York state (including at both Cornell and Syracuse Universities) and the various ensuing controversies. As is, this historical material diverts from the equally noteworthy contributions of the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry today, a markedly different institution in the 21st century. DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 09:53, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
I've added some information regarding the college's early years (pre-1950) from ESF's history page. This is the sort of information that I think really benefits the article and a general understanding of the topic. Any similar additions are of course welcome. If we could get some free images of the early years of the campus/students/faculty, that would also be a great addition. María (habla conmigo) 13:10, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

New Article? History of the New York State College of Forestry

Good edits... With this article, important to develop/ maintain a balance between the fascinating history/ foundations of the institution, and its dynamic present. At the same time, there is so much fascinating early history that a separate, new History of the New York State College of Forestry article may be useful. Those with such an interest, consider this an invitation! DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 22:51, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

I believe the collection of anon IPs have taken this suggestion and run with it, although much of its contents consists of what used to be at this article. :) See New York State College of Forestry -- btw, I think the name of the article is not quite right, and your suggestion would be far more fitting. María (habla conmigo) 17:04, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks...good to know. Have added links here & there. I agree that the name of the new article should be clarified. Overall, a step in the right direction.DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 21:33, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
Transition completed with name change to History of the New York State College of Forestry.DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 22:52, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

Category Change Not Helpful

The recent category change from 'New York State College of Forestry' to 'State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry' was ill-informed and not helpful. I am not sufficiently well-versed in Wiki-editing technique to reverse it, or to even find out its origin -- though I did try. The original category is accurate; the new category, while it has its place, is in some respects inaccurate. The reason being that the 'New York State College of Forestry' encompasses two separate institutions, the first being established at Cornell University; the second at Syracuse University. As presently (re)constituted, the changed category includes entries from both, and is thus inaccurate. The present-day State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry encompasses only the second manifestation, at Syracuse University. I would urge whoever initiated this to revert it back to the (more accurate) way it was before. If you want to set up an additional, new category reflecting the current institution, that is fine, too. Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 03:18, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

RESOLVED, through reinstatement of the Category:New York State College of Forestry in addition to the new Category:State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Both make sense, with the former broader and more historically oriented, and the latter serving the present-day institution. DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 10:03, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
