"Thought provoking gameplay"?

The second paragraph in the Gameplay section lists "thought provoking gameplay" and replay value as elements of the game. I can understand the replay value, but come on, just what's so thought-provoking in its gameplay? Anyone care to help me understand? I'll be taking that out if no one can. 99.246.249.112 (talk) 19:10, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Skeletron

In the gameplay section, the last sentence says "If one attempts to enter before defeating Skeletron, he/she will die instantly." This is false, as you will not die instantly. If you enter during the day you will be chased by Skeletron's head which can one hit kill you, yes. However, if you enter during the night you will be chased by more and more of the heads which at night do survivable damange. It is feasible to run into the dungeon and snatch items and magic mirror out of the dungeon or even lure a head out of the dungeon and kill it. If you do the latter, the dungeon will unlock. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.252.131.50 (talk) 21:47, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

Game Cleanup

H3llkn0wz just added a cleanup thing, so, how about we remove the info about the King Slime? PR0T05T33L 09:23, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

There are a lot of trivial details besides that, which give little information to general reader and could be rewritten into a general form. For exmaple "At the start of the game, players have a copper axe, a copper shortsword, and a copper pickaxe." The material of tools is not important to understand the game. In fact, the most important initial part of the game for new players is resource gathering and shelter building, which is omitted and not mentioned until next paragraph. There is no context for why the tools are more important to mention until a later explanation. It does not even explain the world is made of "blocks", it assumed readers are familiar with the games like Minecraft. In short, this section is supposed to adequately explain the game to someone who has never played a game before, instead of listing information that is useful only to those who already play it. There is Terraria Wiki for such detail. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 09:38, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

(There needs to be an easier way to respond to posts...) No offense, but, why haven't you fixed the copper tools thing? "Fixing" would involve rewriting all the section for which I am a little too lazy now. Copyediting is hard. That edit was not really any addition though, rather revert of incorrect material that took a few seconds. Nothing currently in article is wrong, just unencyclopaedic. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 10:06, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

"See Also" (i.e. related games)

I really think Clonk deserves a mention in the related games/see also section. It's a much older game, and it's largely similar in terms of gameplay and looks. I wouldn't go as far as to say that Terraria has copied Clonk, but seeing how similar they are, Clonk should definitely be mentioned somewhere in the page. PiippoN (talk) 19:22, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

Games On Net?

Why is Tim Colwill's bizarre opinion accorded one third of the total paragraph space in the reception section? Who has ever heard of this man or "Games On Net", his apparent soapbox? His suggestion that Terraria drop mining and exploring to focus on its robust action-adventure elements has all the mad, cough-syrup chugging logic of suggesting that Halo's developers should drop all the first-person shooting and focus on the rich strategy-RPG framework. Also, 2.5 Stars out of 5 is a slap on the face. I can only conclude that Mr.Colwill and Games On Net are so tiny and insignificant that they are only authorized to use a handful of stars each year. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.142.165.30 (talkcontribs) 22:53, August 25, 2011

Done I removed the quote, because it is overly long and only repeats the better paraphrased parts before it. Their star system is 2/3 - Pretty damn average; 3/5 - A solid, decent game. [1] The rest is your opinion an Wikipedia is WP:NOTFORUM. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 06:55, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
Someone added the quote again and I am not taking the time to find who, but I removed it from the text. It did so because I agree with H3llkn0wz, in that, the content was a review of Terraria that contradicted those already given, AND it didn't proved acceptable information as to why it did so. (plus, this source is unfamiliar and the site mentioned has negligable traffic as compared to the other reviewers mentioned) User talk:Resolutionsmasher —Preceding undated comment added 23:15, 8 December 2011 (UTC).
Whether or not reviews agree with one-another is completely irrelevant. Reviews are exactly that: reviews. Removing content that you personally disagree with is absolutely not allowed. Moreso, Reception is only supposed to contain short snippets of the review that convey the general "idea or feeling" of it - i.e, you do not need to back it all up with relevant information in the reception area. If you want to read the review and evaluate it yourself, you can do so yourself. While it is true that it shoudl be removed due to lack of notability, you should not remove things that you personally object to. 82.41.232.139 (talk) 16:25, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

RPG label

While this game may appear to contain some of the elements of RPG's (player controls a character that grows in power (though that's mostly just through gear), explores a world, combat, etc), I find the complete lack of character interaction, a storyline, ending/finale and quests to invalidate it from this category. Heck, Super Mario Bros has more of a storyline than this game does, so why not call it an RPG too? Or Minecraft? $0.02, you can 'RP' in practically any game (except maybe Tetris, but I'm sure somebody, somewhere has tried to RP in that), but that doesn't make that game an RPG. DP76764 (Talk) 14:17, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

I am not sure. I too tried to look up the term "RPG" and it seemed to be very loose. However, I have just looked at Steam's listing for it, and it shows it as an "Action, Adventure, RPG, Indie, Platformer". On IGN's review, it lists it as an Action RPG. So there you have it. Unless you have a good source that specifically says it is NOT an RPG, the odds seem to be in the favor of including it. Blake (Talk·Edits) 19:05, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
Aye, yes, the term has a very loose definition. Ah well, I guess if they can call Diablo an RPG, pretty much anything goes. The wikia also calls it "RPG-orientated" [2]. Anyone up for some Mario RP?! DP76764 (Talk) 20:17, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
I don't see why you would go by what a fan wikia says. Adding on to this, the official FAQs page on its website says "Terraria is a game that blends attributes from various genres like action, adventure, and RPG." Blake (Talk·Edits) 03:21, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
Oops, mixed the wikia site up with the official wiki; they're pretty interchangeable. DP76764 (Talk) 03:28, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Release date for Wii U version

I know that a release for the Wii U version of the game hasn't been discussed yet, but one user mentioned that Amazon has it listed for April 12, 2016. Can anybody actually confirm if this is a legitimate release date? Zacharyalejandro (talk) 05:24, 25 February 2016 (UTC)

  • I think that was me. I went and checked Re-Logic's twitter and other places around the same time, and could not find anything related to the Wii U version. April 12 would be a usual day for a game release though, as Dark Souls III will be released the same day, so there is no reason to think they are mistaken, but I suppose we should just wait until Re-Logic confirms it eventually. Would asking them directly on twitter be original research? ~ Dissident93 (talk) 05:40, 25 February 2016 (UTC)

TUH-RUH-REE-UH

Why is the IPA telling me to pronounce Terraria as "tuh-ruh-ree-uh"? Gamingforfun365 (talk) 00:38, 23 August 2016 (UTC)

And, no, I do not need to provide a source for that because it is derived from the common plural noun terraria. Gamingforfun365 (talk) 02:32, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
One of the developers (YouTube links are blacklisted, but look up /watch?v=Udp5ozoYfxM) pronounce it as the IPA states, so who's to say it's wrong? Seeing as though both pronunciations are equally correct, either the IPA must include both of them, or should simply be removed. The common reader doesn't even understand IPA, and will pronounce the game the way they think is right anyway. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 11:02, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
According to what I found, it can be pronounced in two ways (likely British and American or Australian pronounciation), that being /təˈrɛər i ə/ (src) or /tə-ˈrer-ē-ə/ (src). Neither is present on the article, as it hold another form, though the Internet is not clear about it either. So I guess the best way would be to simply remove it and not force anyone to pronounce it our way. On a side note, since "Terraria" is the plural to "Terrarium", we will need to redirect it to the terrarium article and move this to "Terraria (video game)". Lordtobi () 13:06, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
Really? Wouldn't you say the majority of people who search for Terraria on Wikipedia are looking for the game, and not the plural version of some uncommon word? But I agree that we should just remove the IPA, I'll go ahead and remove that now. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 22:27, 24 August 2016 (UTC)

Sales graph

There could be a sales graph that shows how well Terraria sold, and I have just made one on the right (with sources in the file's description. Would the graph benefit? Gamingforfun365 (talk) 16:51, 27 August 2016 (UTC)

  • Probably not. The scale is barely visible in the thumbnail. Also the x-axis scale is irregular which is confusing to the general reader. The graph makes it look like sales have increased linearly but they haven't. --The1337gamer (talk) 17:12, 27 August 2016 (UTC)

If I were to remove the tree from the logo, would the logo be in the public domain? Probably not, for the word is fairly detailed. The tree would definitely make this logo copyrighted, but, if I were to upload a cropped version of the logo that only says "Terraria", would it be in the public domain? Gamingforfun365 (talk) 00:41, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

No. The logo of a game is fully copyrighted, because grass-like letters is also original work of the developers (spriters). ← Alex Great talkrus? 06:31, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
To expand, it's not that it's their work that matters, but that it reaches a certain level of originality, where it cannot be considered simple shapes or letters (the threshold for copyright in US). Removing the tree would also be derivative work. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 10:04, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

Update

Could you please add a section saying that the current version is 1.3.4.4? 116.12.61.195 (talk) 03:30, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

Can you expand on what significant content, if any, this version brings? We don't list version numbers just to list them as they don't carry any information to a general reader. These would only make sense to someone playing the game and tracking changes. This is what game-specific Wikis are for. Otherwise we need reputable sources discussing it. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 12:14, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
It's just a minor update that adds a few new things/bug fixes. The only two updates that actually deserve mention here are 1.2 and 1.3, which were both major updates to the game and covered by various reliable sources at the time. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 01:10, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

Update screenshot?

I think the screenshot, dating from 2011, is out of date. With the recent 1.4 "Journey's End" release, I think it's possible to say that we now have a "definitive edition" of Terraria, and I believe a screenshot (if any) should come from that update, as it would be more representative of what the game has grown to become.

(Edit: I see a screenshot uploaded by someone else has been deleted for being non-free. Is it possible to make a screenshot that legally can be considered fair use e.g. by lowering the resolution of the screenshot like it seems other screenshots of commercial programs have done?) Mount2010 (talk) 14:09, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

We need a small-size screenshot uploaded locally, which would satisfy fair use. Same as current one (which will then be deleted). Someone just needs to do it. The deleted screenshot had completely wrong licensing and was uploaded to Commons, which doesn't allow non-free images. —  HELLKNOWZ   ▎TALK 14:47, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

In the last sentence of the first paragraph of the Development and release section, change:

"However, development resumed in 2013 with Tahir asking the community for ideas to include in future content updates."

Please get consensus to change an external link to a different website. Thanks. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 19:14, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
It's not a different website as such, Gamepedia is being migrated to Fandom. —  HELLKNOWZ   ▎TALK 20:11, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

add all npcs

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. Also note that Wikipedia is not a game guide. ‑‑ElHef (Meep?) 17:38, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

Revert Back to C Article

This is no way a B article at this point, there is not enough detail on some stuff like updates or bosses. Gameplay is barely mentioned. MoonlightVector 17:45, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

I want to edit the terraria article becuase I really want to add more features and be more specific as a player everyone needs to know what they arebuying what will they do when they buy it. I want to change somethings too for example it says "You have to kill an specfic boss to enter hard mode" Something like that I really don't remember so they need to be more specific like

To Enter hard more to have to kill a specific boss called The Wall of Flesh, Where do you find it? First go the underworld, How to get there? To get there we need to have very strong fingers we wanna dig down a long tunnel until we reach the Underworld. Now that you are there There will be Demons or Devils however you wanna call them some of them will have a voodoo doll that belongs to the guide once u get it throw it into lava once you do that prepare for battle the wall of flesh will spawn it contains 3 big eyes and some tentacles that attac you someone of them shoot lazar beams once you killed it you can get some pretty good stuff for more information visit the official terraria wiki https://terraria.fandom.com/wiki/Wall_of_Flesh

I want to make things more specific and awesome just like the thing i just wrote. Pomgrean (talk) 02:26, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

Not done: this is not the right page to request additional user rights. You may reopen this request with the specific changes to be made and someone will add them for you, or if you have an account, you can wait until you are autoconfirmed and edit the page yourself. Additionally, wikipedia is not designed to be a gameguide, more an encyclopedic cover of the game itself. Stuff like that will always better suite fandom pages. — IVORK Talk 04:02, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

Add the terraria community forums in the external link tab. The link is https://www.forums.terraria.org 160.2.191.40 (talk) 13:51, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

Not done: Discussion forums are not generally not included per WP:ELNO (item #10 on that list). ‑‑ElHef (Meep?) 17:48, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

mention Terraria is the first game to reach 1 million positive reviews on steam Skitgoneget (talk) 16:07, 20 November 2022 (UTC)

Not done Unless other third-party sources mention this, we generally ignore user reviews since they can be easily manipulated. --Masem (t) 16:09, 20 November 2022 (UTC)

I think this article is severely lacking information about mods

Currently, all this article says about Terraria mods is that they exist and they're installed with tModLoader, a third-party program that was given official support. I think more can and should be said on the topic, as other video game articles, such as Minecraft and Civilization IV, provide much more information about mods. The Minecraft article gives a broad overview of what kind of mods are made for the game, while the Civ 4 article lists a few specific mods. I think either approach would be a vast improvement to the article, but this is how I would personally word it (this would go right after the last sentence in the "Gameplay" section):

Mods for Terraria vary widely in their scope, contents, and purpose. Some, such as Thorium and Calamity, add new content to the game, including new bosses, weapons, and biomes. Some, such as Overhaul, rework the mechanics of the game to provide players with a different experience. Some, such as Recipe Browser, Veinminer, and Fargo's Mutant Mod, aim to improve quality of life by streamlining parts of the game that players may find tedious or frustrating.

I'm sure it's not perfect, but I think it's a good starting point and I'd be happy to discuss how it could be improved. CB915 (talk) 09:10, 29 December 2022 (UTC)

Yes, it would be great to include information about mods, since Terraria has an active modding community. However, anything we include must be supported by reliable sources, such as vetted video game sources. In other words, mods or modding options have to be discusses in some video game news/articles. Perhaps the currently-attached sources have more information that could be used, although care should be taken to not give it undue attention. —  HELLKNOWZ  TALK 10:44, 29 December 2022 (UTC)
All the mods I mentioned and the information I included about them in my suggestion came from the sources already cited in the article. CB915 (talk) 19:56, 29 December 2022 (UTC)
I added it to the article with minor changes. —  HELLKNOWZ  TALK 11:33, 30 December 2022 (UTC)

Listed publishers in the info box

I think it should list that the publishers are Re-Logic and 505 Games, rather than only putting Re-Logic in the footnote. Gill Bates 76931 (talk) 13:13, 9 March 2023 (UTC)

Separate original release and update into different subheaders?

Much important information like the final update internet meme/"fiasco" or the rushed release due to leaks is left out due to the initial development and updates being in one section LemonadeLillith (talk) 02:11, 25 June 2023 (UTC)

Over a million positive reviews on steam

Should I mention in reception that Terraria is the the first and currently only game on steam with over a million positive reviews? Would that be relevant Vampyre77 (talk) 14:40, 9 November 2023 (UTC)

No, because Steam Reviews are user-generated and unreliable for Wikipedia. You would need a reliable secondary source (Like say IGN or EuroGamer) to be explicitly commenting on it. -- ferret (talk) 14:41, 9 November 2023 (UTC)

incorrect info about character editing

the line "Players have the option to customize their character's appearance when creating a new character, and in-game by visiting the Stylist NPC or the Clothier NPC." is wrong. the clothier sells vanity items, you change your default clothes through the Dresser item, and change gender through the Gender Change Potion AaronGaming1066 (talk) 22:20, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

I've adjusted the wording to be more encompassing. (That paragraph should have a source, however, ideally an independent source). Thanks! Grayfell (talk) 22:56, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
would the wiki page for the player character not work? i dont completely know the standards wikipedia has, im more used to game wikis, and those tend to have lower edit standards AaronGaming1066 (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
