Assess[edit]

There are little of no UK schools that have GA status on Wikipedia. THis article is classifired "start" but should be a "B". It lacks references. Look at the ref tag and the references tag and get this marked up. This is a "high" importance school ... may even be top. The wiki article should be that good too. As a student in UCS, I can say as a FACT that the school does not have random drugs tests, and does most certainly NOT have a 100% drug free record! When I change this, why does someone always put it back...?

The capitalization of words is erratic, but I left most of it unchanged because of the differences between British and American capitalization. Professor O. K. Willaimson is probably a typo for Williamson, considering how many other typos I corrected. Art LaPella 00:08, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why are people who have never seen UCS editing this article? User Anskas should have full control over it, as he is currently a student there and seems a responsible user of wikipedia.

I don't think you mean me - I've been fixing typos etc. Art LaPella 20:19, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I am concerned, anyone who adds something useful or helps to clean up the vandalism is welcome to contribute. Thank you for the corrections Art LaPella many of the typos are probably my fault. (user Ramw2)

Does anyone have any views on the following suggestions:

moving most of the first paragraph below the painting, creating a seperate page for Eminent OGs and sorting the eminent OGs by chronology (hard) or field (easier)?

Ramw2.

I definitely think a new page for OGs would be useful: the main page is just getting too large. Sorting by field sounds good. anskas 16:16, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am removing the section that implies that UCS was the first school to teach German, as it is simply untrue. A very neat claim to fame maybe, but untrue nonetheless.

How is this for the school info box? Can anybody fix the problem with "houses"?

If no one has any objections, I'd like to add this info box to the page at some point.

What houses? I don't see the word "houses" either. Capitalize "victor" and link the website. Good otherwise. Art LaPella 22:38, 1 June 2006 (UTC) Have made some improvements, I think it is ready to put on the main page. anskas 01:10, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am not certain whether describing UCS as 'famous' would be entirely accurate, its certainly well known in educational circles, but does not have the name recognition of, for example, Eton College, or Westminster School. Does anyone have any views on this? Ramw2 22:35, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. Have editted the page. anskas

I have listed William Bingham Baring, 2nd Baron Ashburton as one of the founders, the history books say it was WM. Bingham Baring Esq. However I think it likely to be the same man (he didn't inherit the peerage until 1848).

Also, not sure which Viscount Sandon it was... Dudley Ryder, 1st Earl of Harrowby who was already an Earl and would not use a subsidiary title or Dudley Ryder, 2nd Earl of Harrowby but his wiki entry says he was a staunch defender of the established church.....

Paulatim Lodge[edit]

Surely this addition is just speculation. Can any OGs actually confirm this? —anskas

There is a Paulatim Lodge (it has an entry in The Gower), I think it is open to Old Gowers who also meet the Free Masons own criteria...

I don't recall being invited to join, but by definition they need to continually recruit OGs.

Also, why is it in the admissions section? May be better placed in school motto etc...

UCS Festival[edit]

The IP 217.207.114.109 clearly belongs to UCS, and although most edits are vandalism, some are valid. —anskas 00:45, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction[edit]

I think the introduction should be shortened, and some content that is currently in there should be summarised with the full text being put in its own section e.g. book festival.

Anyone agree?

Ramw2 20:40, 16 January 2007 (UTC) 20:39, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. The first two paras should present overview - not specifics on individual events. Separate sections is the way to go for such material. Davidpatrick 20:51, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed it, what do people think?

German[edit]

From 'An angel without wings' (about the school teaching german on its foundation, "(Which no other school in England tought at the time or for many years to come)". Clearly the claim is similar to the one which someone has previously called into doubt, does anyone have any evidence either way? Should it be put in the article with a source for the claim?

Help required on List of notable Old Gowers article[edit]

First of all a big thank you to the two editors who did some great work on the Notable OG page. The article still needs some work to make it better. Come on Gowers! It's just a little "task"! (Task Book anyone??!!!) Davidpatrick 02:54, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

History[edit]

Given that A Tradition of Freedom is now available, it may be time to go into more detail on the history section, perhaps contrasting the different histories?

Ramw2 22:04, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The current text implies that the school moved to Hampstead in 1907, but I have some music with me dedicated to "C Simmons Esq. M.A. Headmaster University College School, Hampstead" published well before 1907. ixo (talk) 23:46, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

'The Gower'[edit]

As a West of Englander (by adoption!) I was surprised when the phrase 'The Gower' took me to the school, not to the beautiful piece of coast just over the Bristol Channel. I have added a disambiguation link, but in my opinion the geographical region should take precedence here. Bob aka Linuxlad 13:16, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Ucs logo 2.JPG[edit]

Image:Ucs logo 2.JPG is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Henry Brougham[edit]

The History section includes "Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux (who appears to be singled out as the ring leader in A tradition for Freedom)". Does it actually use "ring leader"? Those words are usually used with very negative connotations. Mcljlm (talk) 14:52, 9 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
