Rabbit photo?

Why is there a rabbit at the top of this page? It scares me... 71.81.249.201 00:09, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

I think it is just because rabbits are everywhere in the campus. I was personally shocked by about fifteen rabbits when I turned a corner. It does not have to be at the top of this article, but it is sad somebody deleted the picture....--Orcano 07:23, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

I would have thought the rabbits deserved a sub-heading all to themselves?

Board, Govenors, President, Senate

Currently I am translating this article into Japanese. I have a question on a paragraph about the University Act in 1963.

In granting autonomy to the University of Victoria, the University Act of 1963 vested administrative authority in a Chancellor elected by the Convocation of the University, a Board of Governors, and a President appointed by the Board; academic authority was given to a Senate which was representative both of the Faculties and of the Convocation.

I do not understand two words.

1.a Board of Governors

I thought the Board is like board of education.

I misunderstood that the Governors meant local government PM while I forgot there are no such Governors in Canada. Then, what are Govenors and what's a a Board of Governors. I felt that it needs knowledge about Canadian education.

2., and a President appoint by the Board

I completely don't understand this part. Plus the ,(comma) confuses me....

3.a Senate

Is a Senate person who is chosen by people in a electoral district or anthing else?

Hi,

Universities in BC are granted autonomy via the University Act which UVic is member of. Senate in this case, refers to:

The University Senate is the body that governs all academic matters for the university. They rule on matters such as programs, standards and course content. The senate is comprised of ten members, including 16 student representatives. Nominations are being sought for student representatives on Senate.[1]

Students have election votes to elect members of both Senate and BoG and at the same time, there are ex-officio members appointed by the university.

Board of Governors : The Board of Governors manages the university's financial matters. They are responsible for the maintenance and construction of buildings, the appointment of staff and faculty and the establishment of faculties and departments based on the recommendations of the Senate. It determines all fees and student aid, administers university assets and approves the university budget. [2]

President is the one who represents the university and is in charge of all affairs of the university. You can think of it as President of a country, but in a sense of a institution-based one.

Rankings Section

I believe the "Rankings" section is a little bit biased, seeing as the only ranking shown is from Maclean's, which continually ranks UVic very highly. I believe some rankings from other well-reputed sources that rank Canadian universities should be added.WhisperingWisdom (talk) 07:40, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Rabbits

I recently edited the University of Victoria webpage to reflect their current policy of pursuing a lethal cull on the feral rabbits which live at the University. My edit was reverted and marked as vandalism. There was no vandalism involved, and I consider this biased censorship. As the University are openly proclaiming that they are pursuing a lethal cull of feral rabbits in the press, why should this not be reflected in their Wikipedia page?

You changed the school moto to "Painful and Cruel Death to All Feral Rabbits", you changed the word "faculty" to "morons", and you changed the school mascot to "Poisoned Bunnies". You know darn well that that is not constructive. If you want to write about the rabbit cull, write it as a paragraph like a grown-up. —Arctic Gnome (talk • contribs) 20:55, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Lets get this on track; I think a sensible one or two lines with adequate sourcing (there is quite a few news reports) regarding the event and future ones, I believe is warrented for this article it seems. As of May 2010, the University has begun trapping and euthanizing the bunnies[3] as they have been known to put athletes at risk in the playing fields. It has been documented that local veterinarians have offered to perform neutering of the male bunnies. Please change "euthanize" to "kill". Euthanasia is a procedure in which the animal is killed because it is suffering. It is being used here as a euphemism and does not accurately describe the situation. This compromises the neutral point of view. PaeB.141.129.1.98 (talk) 22:26, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Agreed, the article (author of the source states that the officials are killing the bunnies, which with respect to the above is written from a neutral tone);"Officials are trapping the rabbits, then having them killed" The University's position is;"We're delivering the rabbits to a veterinarian, who's euthanizing them through an injection," said the university's facilities manager, Tom Smith. [4]. Which of course would be biased from their perspective. The option that should satisfy your concerns is below, Ill do the change now feel free to revert/change and we can further discuss if this doesnt work;

The phrase "killing (though they claim euthanizing)" sugests that there is some reason to doubt the university's claim that the rabbits are being euthanized. If you want to set up a conflict about the method by which the rabbits are being killed, you need to provide a source that argues the university's claim. If there is no reason to doubt the university's claim, we can just say either "killing", "euthanizing", or "killing by euthanization". —Arctic Gnome (talk • contribs) 14:51, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Did a bit of thinking and I think the reversion to my edit was good, I think theres a few perspectives out there on euthanasia as well, but bottom line, its not truly representing the source accurately. Merger of McKinnon Gym content to this article

The following comments were taken from the talk page of the former McKinnon Gym article:

The gym is notable due to hosting UVic basketball. It is tiny but many collegiate facilities in Canada are. That doesn't mean they are not uniquely noteworthy. I advise leaving this as a stub and letting it improve over time as sports sites do. We don't delete articles about collegiate sports facilities in the US. We don't delete stadiums for DII US schools even though they are no more "noteworthy" and their universities are often even less so. People who view the sports pages on Wikipedia want to know where schools play. Pointing it back at the university page isn't done for US Universities and colleges and shouldn't be done in this instance.

It is one of about 50 CIS basketball facilities. CIS is the highest level of college sports in Canada. An equivilant would be deleting the articles on basketball facilities for CUSA schools.

I do recognize that more documentation would be nice, but it is what I had when I created the article. It would have been better if I could have found the seating capacity, but I could not. And it is a stub. I would argue to let Canadians wiki users build up this stub. More documentation will come in the months to come. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Finiteman1 (talk • contribs)

The article was merged after a merge request from 2009 stood for three years with no comments or opposition against the proposal. The article's content was very short and remained a stub. I think the information is better suited towards improving the athletics section of this article as opposed to another stand-alone stub article. WTF? (talk) 16:20, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

MacLean's comprehensive ranking

In the article it states that the university is ranked second on MacLean's when it was ranked first.

Could someone change that?
