Proposal to change "epithet" to "eponym" or "sobriquet"[edit]

Odd usage of "epithet": Under "Etymology

The classically correct form of the word should be "Venerean" or "Venerian" (cf. Latin: venereus, venerius "belonging to the goddess Venus"), but these forms were only used by a few authors (e.g. Robert A. Heinlein). Scientists sometimes use the adjective "Cytherean" to describe Venus, from the goddess' epithet Cytherea."

but in Wikipedia "Epithet" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epithet), under "Linguistics", we see:

"In contemporary usage, epithet is also used to refer to an abusive or defamatory phrase, such as a racial epithet.",

and since Wikipedia is in contemporary usage, why use the superficially correct "epithet", when the more appropriate "eponym" or "sobriquet" may fit?

Merger proposal[edit]

Ufology is not fiction, it is research and theory. Whether any part of a topic under the category of ufology is to be considered fact or fiction is a matter of opinion. It would therefore be inappropriate for an encyclopedia striving for Objectivity_(journalism) to assert as a matter of fact that anything in the realm of ufology is undeniably true or false, fact or fiction. In other words, it would not be okay to merge this article with one about an admittedly fictional concept that is concocted by an individual for the purpose of providing a fictional work. For example, Andromedans in Star Trek have pretty much nothing to do with Andromedans in ufology. One is a make-believe fantasy concept and one is something purported to be real, whether you agree that it is real or not. For textimony on Andromedans, see Alex Coller, and for Venusians, see Luis Fernando Mostajo Maertens at the 2008 Earth Transformation Conference.

The subject matter of this article is different from Venus in fiction. That article can only deal with actual appearances of the planet Venus in fictional works. References to alleged inhabitants of Venus, not directly connected to fictional portrayals of the planet, do not belong there. RandomCritic (talk) 12:37, 9 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
