'Vero Man'[edit]

I think the material on 'Vero Man' probably does have a place in this article, so I'm re-adding it. Any thoughts on this from 67.151.178.66 or McNeight? Can we also be clearer about what is meant by 'prior to the Ice Age'? I presume this actually means 'prior to the end of the Wisconsin glaciation', since prior the whole glaciation would mean before 70,000 BCE. --Nick Boalch ?!? 19:57, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a little extra from what was the seperate Vero Man page which I found and have turned into a redirect to here. In doing so I found the two to be essentially the same, someone here having wisely edited out the plug to 'Glenn R. Swift' and the singing of his own praises. Dear Sirs:

What is wrong about including my name about the discovery? The find was all but forgotten until I wrote the story. Specifically for my efforts in writing this piece, I won the 1999 Florida Magazine Association's Bronze Award for Excellence in Writing/In-Depth Reporting. Since that time I have lectured at a number of institutions about the find and have been interviewed on the radio many times as well.

With regard to including my website, I did so for it provides access to the full text of this fascinating discovery. If you believe that is inappropriate, fine...but to remove all references to my name appears to be nothing short of vindictive.

Your response would be appreciated,

Glenn R. Swift

Glenn - the paragraph [[index.php?Vero_Beach%2C_Florida&diff=34176973&oldid=33188302] looks totally out of place in the article, especially considering you wrote it about yourself; it comes across as self-aggrandizing combined with the personal website plug as well as description of your award (irrelevant to this article) and how it's receiving national attention (again, this is to do with your written article, not Vero Beach). It looks like something that would be more appropriate on a page about Glenn Swift or something out of a biography. In short, it's not encyclopedic on a page about Vero Beach. If everyone went around putting bits of their related work on the Wiki with self-advertisements it'd be cluttered. It may also be in violation of the [[Wikipedia:No_original_research No original research policy] of Wikipedia.

In addition I might add that whilst it may not seem 'fair' to you that your name was removed though the first paragraph remained, note that of all the tens or hundreds of thousands of editors none require their name to be visible per each article they edit. The first paragraph remains factually correct and yet throughout the Wiki no-one requires their name to be written after what they write (as the text at the bottom of each edit page says: "Please note: If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly or redistributed by others, do not submit it.").

I would concede that a link to your page or specific article at the bottom in the External Links would be related and hence acceptable; your article is infact listed in the Sources section so there are legitimate references there - you are cited.

SynergyBlades 10:58, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Glenn, I've tweaked the page slightly adding reference to renewed interest in Vero Man which also points to the Source cited at the bottom. I cannot however see much point in adding a link to your homepage at the bottom; there is nothing further on your website about Vero Man that would add to an encyclopedia entry. As your name is in the Source article already, it makes no sense to add a personal webpage reference, especially in an encyclopedia. SynergyBlades 11:35, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate you taking the time to explain your position.

Sincerely, Glenn R. Swift

Split Vero Man[edit]

I have split out the Vero Man section to its own article, as it really has nothing to do with the city of Vero Beach, and I have started expanding the material, and will continue to expand it some more. -- Donald Albury 21:38, 27 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Vero Beach High School[edit]

The statement that the current Vero Beach High School was the first high school in Vero Beach is incorrect..the original high school was an old Spanish style building across the football field from the present location..it was torn down relatively recently and replaced with a newer structure. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.242.102.242 (talk) 19:24, 31 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

very basic suggestions on fleshing out parts of the Vero Beach article.[edit]

The community of Vero Beach spreads beyond the city limits; the city proper, 2015 pop. 16,300 (2015 Census Bureau estimate), has few natural boundaries. Many and perhaps the majority of Vero Beach addresses are outside the city limits in Indian River County, 2015 pop. 148,000 (Census Bureau estimate).

The best background pieces on Vero Beach are in the .pdf attachments to area listings in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Vero Beach community has a significant very well-heeled but low-key seasonal population, most of it on the barrier island, which has contributed immeasurably to the civic and cultural life of the city, i.e., the Indian River Medical Center whose 332 all-private-room hospital is the center of large diverse medical community, the Museum of Art and its Art School, the Riverside Theater performing arts center with four stages, classes, outreach and touring programs, and many privately supported organizations involved in everything from Alzheimers and Parkinsons education and outreach to the Veterans Council and many related programs supporting 15,500 veterans in Indian River County and 26,300 veterans in contiguous St. Lucie County. A great deal of the social activity of seasonal residents is focussed on philanthropy.

Much of the physical appeal of Vero Beach is the result of its 50' building height limit.

A good deal of the economic activity in Vero Beach is related to its seasonal population. The Brooklyn, later Los Angeles, Dodgers maintained their spring training operations in Vero Beach for 60 years, until 2008. The loss of the Dodgers had obvious negative impact on the city and county.

The Indian River Mall mall property (as opposed to anchors Dillard's, Sears And J. C. Penney) including the Macy's structure is owned by Wells Fargo. There is no adequate employment base to support the stores and vacant space in the mall, especially in the face of greatly-increasing online retail volume. Surrounding retail buildings are investor- or user-owned. Consumer interest in the mall low; it has no critical mass to draw consumer traffic.

Metro population[edit]

@DeXXus: Why did you change the metro population? According to the US Census Bureau, the metropolitan area ("Sebastian–Vero Beach–West Vero Corridor, FL") is Indian River County. Kk.urban (talk) 20:56, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies, an easily explained search "gone-wrong". When I checked the Indian River County, Florida wiki page to merely confirm the figure, I noticed the citation link was a 2018 web archive Quickfacts link (before the 2020 Census). Figured I'd search for Vero Beach, Indian River County, Florida in the actual 2020 Census and landed at Vero Beach CCD, Indian River County, Florida | Total Population in Vero Beach CCD, Indian River County, Florida but the number was smaller than previously recorded. So, there at the .gov site I searched for just Vero Beach and not only got the previous link but additionally the Vero Beach South CDP, Florida  |  Total Population in Vero Beach South CDP, Florida. Too hastily, I added those two and I got those numbers left in my editing comment. Thank you for catching my error. I'm off to fix the citation link at Indian River County.
