Removing images

This article is written like a presentation for a school lecture. Too many pics. I will remove some of them soon if no-one objects, or even if they do. In an article like this, every pic needs a ref to go with it – Comment added 22:15, 4 May 2015‎ by User:Jodosma, who should have signed with four tildes.

Have at it! It's in a terrible state, and could use a thorough going-over. Simon Burchell (talk) 22:41, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
Good luck. Each section could be shortened considerably because just about all of them are linked to what should be more complete articles elsewhere in Wikipedia. We also need inline refs, and where we don't have them, I would suggest simply deleting the paragraphs or the sentences where they are lacking. It was up to the original author of these facts to justify them with refs. As for photos, you could look at Wikipedia:Image_use_policy#Image_galleries, which gives some trenchant advice. So far as layout goes, three images across the bottom of the section should be enough. I like the size: I hate tiny images! Yours, BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 04:57, 5 May 2015 (UTC)
Having thought about it a little more I think the best idea is first to create the Commons category referred to at the bottom of the article and proceed from there. I haven't done this before so may take some time. Jodosma (talk) 10:58, 5 May 2015 (UTC)

Removal of pictures: All of the pictures removed have been placed in Category:Indigenous art of the Americas or Category:Pre-Columbian art at Commons, or of course they can be retrieved by using the history pages of this article. Jodosma (talk) 08:48, 6 May 2015 (UTC)

Personally, I think more need to be culled - the article looks like a gallery at the moment. Selected pictures should be illustrating the text, not text acting effectively as an introduction to the pictures. I also think it is over-rated at B class, and should be dropped to C class. All the best, Simon Burchell (talk) 08:56, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
More will be culled; it will take some time, trying to match the text with the pics to decide which to remove. Jodosma (talk) 09:16, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
@Simon Burchell: I think I've done all I can here with my limited knowledge of the subject. You can probably see other refinements that need to be done. Jodosma (talk) 12:40, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
Certainly a good start - I've written a number of Mesoamerican visual arts-related articles, so may be able to do something with that section. Thanks for stepping in, Simon Burchell (talk) 12:43, 6 May 2015 (UTC)

Just saw the notice to stop adding images. Seems like Mesoamerican and the Andes have too many images, while images in paragraphs of text (as opposed to standalone galleries) might still be useful. Yuchitown (talk) 19:32, 7 January 2019 (UTC)Yuchitown

Development of Sections

I am writing this because I think there might be some areas that could be improved. I really enjoyed reading this article because I am Native American and I really enjoy reading about other cultures and their traditions. My suggestion would be to add some more detail to the North America section. Under the North America heading there are only certain regions mentioned while under the South America section there are headings for specific tribes. There are large tribes across the continent with their own specific artifacts that could be mentioned. While this article is full of history and interesting facts, I think adding some more detail about what the art was used for could be a great addition. That detail could include things like housing or ceremonial traditions and rituals. Also, the leading section of this article is a little vague and could be more developed as well before jumping right into specifc details. These are just my suggestions and I hope this article can possibly be better than it already is!

Greenwhich

What is Greenwich, in the legend of the image in the introduction: "This map lacks Greenwhich, which is part of the Artic." Can it be linked to another article?

Thanks, Gene.arboit (talk) 10:25, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure that it should read, "This map does not show Greenland, which is part of the Arctic cultural area." In fact, I'll change it. - Donald Albury 14:18, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

Sue Coleman

Adding a non indigenous artist (Sue Coleman) to the see also list? With an edit summary and an added note that she is "non-controversial", while our article on her definitely gives the impression that her "cultural appropriation" of indigenous artwork styles has been controversial, with citations I might add. That not only seems inappropriate for this article, it seems more than borderline dishonest in the edit summary. Heiro 23:13, 15 November 2019 (UTC)

Sorry, my apologies, I misread that, you did say "controverial". I still disagree that she should be linked from this article. Maybe in a section about cultural appropriation of indigenous art, but not as a stand alone link.Heiro 23:17, 15 November 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the message, I thought the addition might be troubling. I searched for a section for non-ind appropriators. Probably not the right place to link her, but perhaps we can consider a section for these non-idig appropriators. It seems like a sensitive area in the art world. All my best to you! You too! I'd like to have some input from other editors about the issue, hopefully User:Uyvsdi as they are much more knowledgeable about this specific aspect of the subject than I. But I'm not sure how active they are anymore. Heiro 23:55, 15 November 2019 (UTC)
