Copyright[edit]

CorenSearchBot posted a warning on this page about copyrighted material. This is the official biography for RADM Carpenter, as it appears on her bio page at her command's web site, Navy Warfare Development Command. It _IS_ very similar to this article, http://www.navyweek.org/littlerock2010/sailors.html, and probably other sites on the Internet, because the information comes from the U.S. Navy and is usually repeated verbatim. Since this bio is the property of the U.S. Navy, and is meant to be distributed as such, I don't see that there is a copyright issue. If you have a better solution, I would love to hear it.Christopher Douglas (talk) 14:55, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the CSB notice and tagged the article with the US gov't public domain notice. However, I am unable to access the mentioned page at this time (possibly because of firewall restrictions at my site or possibly because of access restrictions of the site itself). If I am unable to access the site from my home computer, I will have to remove the public domain notice and restore the copyright notice as the author's claim will be unverifiable. As a better solution, the author is invited to rewrite the biography in his own words to avoid the copyright issue. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 14:39, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, forgot to sign my post. I am brand new to editing Wikipedia, so making as many mistakes as possible. Here is another link to the Admiral's bio, if that helps: http://www.navy.mil/navydata/bios/bio.asp?bioID=66Christopher Douglas (talk) 14:55, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've verified the Navy bio page. It is a public domain work of the US Government. However, WikiDan is correct in that re-writing original prose would be a better idea than simply copy-pasting it. You should take a look at the Manual of Style and make some edits. Also, the photo is almost assuredly a Navy one, and could be uploaded at Wikimedia Commons. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 16:47, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
