The way we were[edit]

I was in Wigan today, and managed a quick glimpse of the area around the pier. A taxi driver said "The Way We Were" is now permanently closed - can anyone verify this? Shame if it is, as I'm sure it was a major attraction to the area. regards, Lynbarn (talk) 00:38, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Future[edit]

There are so many stories, by so many people, relating to anything about Wigan that it is almost impossible to hit on any true facts. The place is inundated with myths about anything and everything and the vast majority of these are, as you put it, 'illiterate rants'. The problem with these myths is that they are taught to local children in schools and are also promoted as 'marketing' by the local council. In the words of the 'Wigan Archaeological Society' - "Some things may not be true, but it's fun to speculate". Speaking of illiterate rants...

Although Orwell states he was in 'the dreadful environs of Wigan', on analysis he must have been outskirts of Wigan, looking in, as there has never been any 'slag heaps' in Wigan. Neither has there been any 'flashes' caused by coal mining subsidence. Yes, Wigan contained factories, 'sending out their plumes of smoke' which Orwell could see through the 'passes' in the slag heaps, but the slag heaps and flashes were located in coal mining towns nearby, not in Wigan.

Then he says "... as far as the slag-heaps in the distance, stretched the ‘flashes’", which again shows his position to have been quite a way from Wigan, probably somewhere along the Leigh Branch of the Leeds Liverpool Canal.

Categorisation[edit]

@Dr Greg: Fair call - whether or not Wigan is in Lancs (as it still is AFAIC), Wigan Pier has never exactly been a pleasure spot unlike the others I moved into Category:Piers in Lancashire and suchlike. It's a mild oddity, and the broad category Category:Piers in England could well be the best place for it. Narky Blert (talk) 02:21, 17 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
