Methodism[edit]

Is this the same "Dr Borlase" who persecuted the methodists? (See John Wesley's Journal) Roger Pearse (talk) 18:19, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Could be - the ODNB has the following "In the summers of 1744 and 1745 he came into conflict with John Wesley, who was successfully recruiting many of Borlase's parishioners to Methodism, and in his capacity as a magistrate he summoned Wesley before the local court." Can't remember the source but Wesley escaped the press gang because he was a gentleman. Some of his companions were not so lucky. Jowaninpensans (talk) 14:24, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

However, Berresford Ellis states that the persecution was described as being carried out by a Dr Borlase, at a time before William had earned his doctorate, but after his brother Walter, Vicar of Madron, had earned his.Captdoc (talk) 10:45, 25 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
