Fair use rationale for Image:Ynglinglogo.gif[edit]

Image:Ynglinglogo.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Arguably not really a Norwegian boat[edit]

I feel it is slightly misleading to describe the Yngling as a 'Norwegian sailboat' just because its designer was Norwegian, and it was first introduced in Norway. As the article goes on to make clear, it has been built under license in several countries and has been an international class for over 40 years (as well as being a former Olympic class), so it is not strongly associated with Norway. (By analogy, does anybody refer to the Laser as a 'Canadian dinghy' because it was designed by a Canadian?)

My change to '...designed by Norwegian Jan Hermann Kinge...' was reverted, but I still think that this would be a truer statement. An alternative would be '...sailboat of Norwegian origin...', although this somewhat suggests a connection to traditional boats in Norway which is not the case. What about 'The Yngling is a sailboat designed and first introduced in Norway...'?

My addition of an external link to the Yngling international class association was also reverted (this could equally well, or better, replace reference 6 to the mention of the Yngling in the sailboatdata.com website as a more authoritative and useful source for the paragraph referring to national and internatonal class associations). I am not sure if this was intentional or got caught up with the rejection of my change to 'Norwegian'?

Regards, James Whitby (member of the Yngling class association in Switzerland) JAWhitby (talk) 13:40, 11 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have a problem with calling it a boat designed by a Norwegian, since it is built all over the world, but your link was to Norway when it should have been to Norwegians, which I have now implemented.
We don't link to class associations, because it is WP:SPAM. The sailboatdata.com ref is a third party ref that shows the club is notable. If people want to find the club they can go to that ref, which links to it, but as per WP:EL we do not link to anything here other than the official website(s) for the product itself. - Ahunt (talk) 14:07, 11 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the answer, although having read the WP:SPAM page I'm afraid that fail to see how it applies, or why it is better to link to sailboatdata.com than the non-profit class association for this type of boat. Some other wikipedia pages on small sailing boats do either link to the class association directly, or to a reference document from the class association. (e.g. the H-boat article links directly; the Laser article doesn't, but instead refers to the rules available from the class association). JAWhitby (talk) 16:25, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, that is WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS, those pages just need fixing as well. Basically Wikipedia is not the place to promote your club. If it has been noted by third party sources then it can be mentioned, but using the club website as a reference for inserting mentions of the club into the article is just WP:PROMOTIONAL. In short, it needs third party sources or it is not notable. - Ahunt (talk) 16:32, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
H-boat is now  Fixed. Let me know if you find more that need cleaning up. - Ahunt (talk) 16:39, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
