Notice to editors. The article was nominated to ITN. Elijahandskip (talk) 23:00, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It's been listed on ITN now. Pahunkat (talk) 20:47, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

School name[edit]

I think the school's full actual name is "Government Girls Science Secondary School Jangebe". I'm not completely sure though. Harizotoh9 (talk) 08:43, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Harizotoh9, the name you reported appears to be the name of the school according to this BBC article[1].Jurisdicta (talk) 04:25, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Also according to this[2] 15:11, 5 March 2021 (UTC)

Related[edit]

I thought we could include the incident of a kidnapping near Abuja, recently, which has not been so newsworthy. Bokoharamwatch (talk) 18:37, 27 February 2021 (UTC) What about Mahuta? Bokoharamwatch (talk) 20:11, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

mdy?[edit]

Out of curiosity, why is mdy being used? Isn't dmy Nigeria's format? Nehme1499 23:15, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nehme1499, I just formatted it that way to make it consistent throughout the article, since the dates were in all sorts of formats before. I just use mdy on most articles I encounter unless it says otherwise, feel free to change to dmy. Pahunkat (talk) 09:27, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Pahunkat: Per MOS:TIES, while Nigeria has own English spelling like another English-speaking countries, it mostly inherit they spelling from former colonial power the United Kingdom as it previously part of British Empire and still member of the Commonwealth of Nations, which all of them use DMY format even in Canada, which three date formats are used. Because it, this article should be use DMY as date format that commonly used in Nigeria as other Commonwealth countries. It should be use as DMY in order to be consistent with Nigeria main article and i also add Nigerian English tag in the article. 36.76.234.82 (talk) 14:39, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nehme1499, recommending User:Ohconfucius/script/MOSNUM dates to automate this process - it's really helpful. Pahunkat (talk) 15:26, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Pahunkat: unfortunately the script isn't working for me, for some reason. Nehme1499 15:49, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Nehme1499, try clicking the 'edit source' button on an article - does the link in the 'tools' sidebar come up? Since all dates here are dmy already it won't do anything. Pahunkat (talk) 15:51, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Add year to title of article[edit]

Sadly such incidents tend to recur, so we are likely to see more incidents in future years. I thus suggest that the year "2021" might helpfully be inserted into the title of this article. And likewise with the Kagara kidnapping article. Rif Winfield (talk) 13:40, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

We only do that if more than one similar event happens in the same location. Likewise, we only add the month to the title if it happens more than once in the same year. Jim Michael (talk) 13:54, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Confusion[edit]

multiple sources and the article state that the raid happened at 01:00 local time. A school should not be opened at that hour. Idan (username is Zvikorn) (talk) 17:12, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Zvikorn, the school is a boarding school. The raid happened at that time when the schoolchildren were sleeping. Pahunkat (talk) 17:14, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Pahunkat, since it is a boarding school, it is technically open 24 hours a day and seven days a week, so long as there is students on campus sleeping, eating, or attending school. Jurisdicta (talk) 04:57, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Number of girls[edit]

The numbers don't add up according to The Guardian. It says that 279 girls have been released, yet in the article it is 317. And also it should be updated, because they have been released. - Matroxko (talk) 08:54, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Matroxko, thanks for that - I will update the article now. Pahunkat (talk) 09:07, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I should elaborate a bit on what happened there - initial reports stated that 317 girls were kidnapped, however this was inaccurate as some ran into the bush to escape. The kidnappers abducted 279 schoolchildren, which have now all been returned. Pahunkat (talk) 20:51, 6 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

One of the first times I've heard of a mass kidnapping, good thing they've been released.[edit]

Have the bandits been put to justice? AidTheWiki (talk) 14:41, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sadly, mass kidnapping of children is not uncommon in certain areas of the world. See List of kidnappings#Mass kidnappings. This recent article does not talk about any captures of the kidnappers, see [1] Jurisdicta (talk) 03:55, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunate; I hope they are arrested. Thank you for the informative response, JurisdictaAidTheWiki (talk) 15:08, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"more 40 victims" referred to in the lede section[edit]

Clarification is needed. 40 people were affected in the kidnapping but it is not clear what point is being made with this sentence and I did not want to make any assumptions. Thank you bobdog54 (talk) 04:11, 7 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Bobdog54,  Done - the sentence in the lead also needs to be reworded to make it clearer. Pahunkat (talk) 11:07, 7 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sickening quotes from self-serving politicians should be removed from article[edit]

According to the article, these politicians refused to stop stroking themselves even when the parents demanded their children, then used deadly force to ensure that their speeches would finish. Given that these quotes are all useless, non-informative claptrap, they should be removed as WP:QUOTEFARM anyway. Abductive (reasoning) 19:42, 7 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

3rd kidnapping article started[edit]

A 3rd mass kidnapping took place today. See Kaduna State kidnapping. This is just a notice to editors who helped edit this article. Elijahandskip (talk) 13:31, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Elijahandskip, thank you - I'll look at this later. Pahunkat (talk) 18:38, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Was going to ask of it, since being off internet for few days. Bokoharamwatch (talk) 17:27, 13 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
