Hilda Lyon[edit]

The launch of USS Albacore in 1953
The launch of USS Albacore in 1953
  • ... that the hull of USS Albacore (pictured) had the shape of a woman designed for airships?
  • ALT1 ... that the hull of USS Albacore (pictured) had the Lyon Shape that was originally designed for airships by one of Britain's first professional women aeronautical engineers?

  • This article is new enough and long enough. The original hook is pretty incomprehensible, but perhaps that is what you want. I prefer ALT1. The image is in the public domain, the article is neutral and I detected no copyright problems. There is a problem however, the WISE source states "Hilda passed away in 1949", but the article states she died in 1946. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:31, 4 July 2017 (UTC)
@Zeromonk and Andrew Davidson: Are you able to sort this out? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 08:25, 10 July 2017 (UTC)
Zeromonk may be indisposed so I'll take a look when I get a moment. Andrew D. (talk) 08:28, 10 July 2017 (UTC)

I have checked the obituaries in The Times and The Woman Engineer and the year is clearly 1946. Presumably the date of 1949 in the WISE source is a typo. As for the first hook, it is a play on words. ALT1 seems too wordy for my taste. How about streamlining it to:

  • ALT2 ... that the hull of USS Albacore (pictured) had the Lyon Shape that was originally designed for airships by a woman?
Thanks all! The WISE source does appear to have a typo based on obituaries in other sources. I like the streamlined hook! Zeromonk (talk) 12:19, 12 July 2017 (UTC)
  • Thank you for sorting that out. This should be good to go with ALT2. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 13:06, 12 July 2017 (UTC)
  • Hi, I came by to promote this, but I feel the hook is rather loosely-worded, and it would be nice to know the name of the woman who created it. Also, the target page is not piped properly. I would suggest something more along these lines:
  • ALT3: ... that the "Lyon shape", invented by the British engineer Hilda Lyon, was incorporated into the hull of the USS Albacore (pictured)? Yoninah (talk) 21:13, 24 July 2017 (UTC)
  • ALT3 seems inferior to ALT2. Having the personal name of the subject in the hook doesn't improve it because it's just a name with no special resonance. The Lyon Shape is a valid redirect for the topic and the idea is that it makes the hook more intriguing to have this as the bold link. As myself, Zeromonk and Cwmhiraeth all found ALT2 acceptable, we should stick with it, please. Andrew D. (talk) 17:01, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
  • Restoring tick for ALT2. Yoninah (talk) 18:08, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
