D1Baseball.com Poll[edit]

If you can figure out how to add an optional parameter to the template (so that it wouldn't have to appear on older pages with the template), then go ahead and add it. BA is certainly more reputable at the moment due to its history in the baseball community, but D1B seems to be getting a lot of traffic. And BA does have a group of guys that do it (John Manuel, Jim Shonerd, and Michael Lannana). Mpejkrm (talk) 13:39, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm all for it, but the recent change is causing problems. On every article where this template exists, it is causing problems as the mandatory parameters are missing. Also, D1Baseball is (as you can see) a red link. I'm reverting your edit, but if there is a way to apply #ifexist, then I'm for it. BenYes? 01:43, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If it was added it would need to be an optional parameter. I have no idea how to do that. Mpejkrm (talk) 20:28, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

New Template Needed[edit]

Resolved

Collegiate Baseball has ceased operations. The template in its current form still has a section for the Collegiate Baseball weekly ranking. I think Perfect Game's weekly poll would be the best substitution (as it is already prominent and referenced by athletic departments and reporters). However, we cannot just alter the template, since it will adversely affect previous seasons' pages. I propose a new Template be created with Perfect Game substituted, but I'm not sure how to proceed. I changed the existing template but was then notified of the chaos it caused for historic pages. I believe it would be as simple as creating a second Template (call it "v2.0" or "v2024" or whatever) and replace all "collegiate" with "perfectgame". Why not just add another row? You are welcome to modify the sandbox version of the template, adding poll6 parameters of your choice, structured like the others. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:11, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That would create a row of blank polls on previous pages and would still leave a defunct ranking outlet in the poll box. Frizbaloid (talk) 20:13, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe. It depends on how you implement it. Try things out in the sandbox and on the testcases page. You could also hack things by replacing CB with PG after 2023, with a note to that effect at the bottom of the table. – Jonesey95 (talk) 06:43, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I tried just copying and pasting the D1B poll5 formatting and changing everything to poll6 and perfectgame, but that didn't work. Got an error unknown parameter poll6title, so I didn't save the sandbox. Does anyone know someone who might be experienced with editing templates we could ping? Swimmer33 (talk) 01:32, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You can ignore that unknown parameter error for now. Save the new version in the sandbox; you won't break anything important. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:47, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I re-did adding Perfect Game and saved with the errors. maybe you can check it out and see how to resolve the errors? Swimmer33 (talk) 14:48, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nice work. I have tidied it up and added some data to the testcases page. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:32, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Also, it looks like all of the templates for this year, such as ones on Clemson & Texas, are still showing the Collegiate Baseball parameter. Swimmer33 (talk) 01:34, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I can help you fix that in the sandbox also. We need a big #if statement. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:50, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I took a stab at the if statement and it looks like that didn't break anything major... Maybe you can take a look at it as well? Swimmer33 (talk) 14:48, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I tidied it up a bit. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:32, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think the test cases are working correctly so what do we need to do in order to get the main template changed? Swimmer33 (talk) 16:42, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Done. I checked about ten articles to make sure the new features were working. Let me know if you find any problems. Please check the Perfect Game URLs that have been added to 2024 articles; I have found a few that need trailing slashes removed in order to work. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:14, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wow! This looks great! That's exactly what I was hoping for but I still can't understand how this single template adjusts its components from year to year. I can't understand what you put in it that tells it to include Collegiate (seasons 2023 and prior) or to include Perfect Game (2024 and beyond).
It's also important we have the attached template/doc updated. Frizbaloid (talk) 22:07, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The /doc page is not protected. Have fun updating it! – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:16, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
 Done Frizbaloid (talk) 03:21, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not the best at explaining exactly how it works, but if you look at the difference in the poll title parameter for collegiate baseball and the Coaches' poll, hopefully that gives you some idea. Basically the collegiate and D1 and perfect game polls all say if there is no data entered, don't show the poll in the table, whereas the other polls will always show even if there is no data. Since this is resolved I am going to attempt to start the deletion process for Template:NCAA Division I baseball ranking movements 2024. First time I'll have done this, so hopefully I'll take all the necessary steps. I removed the 2024 template from the only page it was used on, Oregon State. Swimmer33 (talk) 18:36, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if it qualifies for speedy deletion unless Frizbaloid puts {{db-G7}} on it. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:54, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. I updated to PROD, but it says to only use that on articles. Swimmer33 (talk) 18:57, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Can I just delete the page as the creator or do I need to add {{db-G7}} to it? Frizbaloid (talk) 22:02, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like its been taken care of. Thanks for your help changing over to Perfect Game! Swimmer33 (talk) 00:12, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
