Neowin is a technology news website ranked as a top 500 site in the Technorati blog directory.[4] Editorial focus is predominantly on Microsoft-related news,[5] [6] [7] although news regarding the Apple Macintosh and Linux platforms is also included. Its target audience is advanced computer users and technology enthusiasts.
History[edit]
Neowin was started as a hobby in October 2000 by Marcel Klum and Steven Parker, known within the forums as "Redmak" and "Neobond" respectively. The early focus of the site was reporting news about the alpha and beta releases of Windows XP (then known as Whistler). The staff count has since grown to 35.[8]
Neowin has broken several stories, such as the leak of Windows 2000 source code onto the internet[9] and a phishing attack which affected 20,000 Hotmail users.[10]
Site structure[edit]
The website provides news, technology reviews, opinion articles, as well as an IRC server and forums. Over 250,000 users have registered for the forums,[11] making over 9,000,000 posts as of November 2009. Two projects initiated by members of the Neowin community are an official game server for Team Fortress 2[12] and a Folding@Home team.
