WikiXDC: Wikipedia 10th Birthday![edit]

National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)

You are invited to WikiXDC, a special meetup event and celebration on Saturday, January 22 hosted by the National Archives and Records Administration in downtown Washington, D.C.

  • Description: There will be a behind-the-scenes tour of the National Archives and you will learn more about what NARA does. Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup![edit]

  1. At WikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.
  2. To support the Wikimania bid, more events like WikiXDC, and outreach activities like collaborations with the Smithsonian (ongoing) and National Archives, there also has been discussion of forming Wikimedia DC, as an official Wikimedia chapter. You can express interest and contribute to chapter discussions on the Wikimedia DC Meta-Wiki pages.
  3. To discuss all this and meet up with special guest, Dutch Wikipedian User:Kim Bruning, there will be a meetup, Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 16 this Tuesday at 7pm, at Capitol City Brewery, Metro Center. There will be a pre-meetup Wikimania team meeting at 6pm at the same location.

I was simply trying to put the title in italics and thought the usual double single quote marks would do the trick. But no, they appeared in the title. So please tell me how to present the title of an article in italics. As you may have noticed, the Alice ballet is not it italics at the moment.   1. It's still in beta and has not had a production release and has not been reviewed.
  2. It's been created and speedied several times over the last three weeks. It's a recreation with a different title.

Ok, you have sold me - I revisited it and followed the links they provided - in the future though previous deltions via CSD does not mean future articles are automatically subject to CSD - I do agree in this case. In general I would rather send this to AFD (I prefer to err on the side of caution) but I feel it would be a snowball at AFD due to the trends I have seen there and will just save everybody the trouble. Yeah, I forgot that only AFD'ed articles are technically eligible for db-repost. Though certainly repeated spam can be deleted. It may very well end up notable once it is finished, released and reviewed, but this simply looks like promotion of a link to the website of a future product. Yworo (talk) 22:19, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Also, I don't think it is great to suggest they develop an article "on their talk". It would be better to suggest creating a user-space draft, perhaps linking Wikipedia:USERSPACEDRAFT, and/or mentioning WP:WIZARD.  Chzz  ►  22:43, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Missouri Boys State[edit]

I forgot to check if that article had already been tagged and declined; sorry about that (although in my defense, I tagged it under a different criteria). I think I've managed to chop out most of the advertising, although a confirmation from someone else would be good. The user who created that has a username that's borderline at best. I did not mean any offense in my CSD rejection notice - I just like to record the CSD counts (for my own personal sake/sanity) when I am patrolling CSD. It saves me from having to go to far into the history to identify if it was a previous CSD (again, I hope you were not offended and if you were please accept my sincerest apologies). Also, thanks for doing some work on it! I will take a look if I get a chance but I have to get ready and go teach a class here in a few minutes and am preparing my lecture for the day. Liisi Beckmann[edit]

I read the FAQ and I'd like to "convice" you, because Liisi doesn't pass the Google Test, as there are only 195000 results about her. I know she isn't so popular yet, she had misunderstandigs with companies and she wasn't so good with public relations, but I swear she IS really notable. For exemple, she designed a plate which was exhibited at MoMA, or a famous armchair called Karelia which was produced by Zanotta in 1966 and back into production since 2007. You can find it everywere on web, but find only the name of Liisi, without photos or biography or notices or something. I think it is so unfair, and I decided to write her biography and pay tribute to her job. She lived primarily in Italy, Germany and Finland, but I thought about writing an article on english Wikipedia too, cause i guess she might get more visibility in this way.

I agree that Liisi Beckmann has significance, having seen some of her works at the finnish design museum. I actually looked information about her first on finnish wikipedia and then came to look for more on english one only to be surprised not only that there was not more information about her in english wikipedia but that that page about her was removed.

Have you read our policies on Original Research and Reliable Sources? In short, for you to "convince" me, what I mean is you need to provide me with a reliable source. Decopoedia does not appear to be reliable. I hope this helps! Chrislk02 Chris Kreider 22:31, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

I am not much of wikipedia editor but Liisi Beckmann can be found for example on The design encyclopedia (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/087070012X/). Dwell magazine show cases the karelia chair in its may 2007 issue on page 64. (http://books.google.com/books?id=lMQDAAAAMBAJ) These should be valid references in english. Also "Quattordicesima triennale di Milano" from 1968 contains her works, but this is in Italian. The Dirtball article was deleted after being an article for a while, I think this article is important, because he is a solo rapper signed to Suburban Noize Records, a major record label, and he is a part of the punk rock band X-Pistols. Please let the administrator decide - neither you nor do I - we both not have sources that the award was first given in 1968 or before 1968 - you can make grammar correction in introduction - the award recieved by an actress in 1960 was CITED

some awards before 1960's are not published in national news papers - who ru u to decide friend whether the source is reliable or not - ur not administrator - encyclopedia Britannica is not even opening

jointscene.com is a reliable source or not administrator will decide - It is not your job alone to harass fellow users - wikipedia is not yours alone - its everyones - every one is free to edit genuinely - this is a genuine contribution

Of Gentlemen and Cowards[edit]

Hello. Earlier today the article for [[2]] was extremely quickly deleted through section A7. I read the article your about bands in order to better respond to you. Although the band is relatively new onto the scene, they've accomplished a ton in a very short time. They've been on a major Ontario radio station (as cited) and will have an interview posted in a magazine in the next few weeks (also to be posted). They are also signed to the promotions company Pure Fokus Entertainment. The band will be headlining a major Hamilton venue this week, only shortly after opening for a very notable band (also on Wikipedia). That is a very interesting story, and congratulations on your potential success! I am looking forward to reading about your band in any reliable sources that you can provide! (In short, you telling me is not enough - thousands of local bands get spots on local radio stations (e.g. I remember every week the Rock station I listened to growing up at a locals time slot)). However, I also found a few reliable source's covering the band's history, so I think those problems can be covered. DC Meetup: May 7 @ Tenleytown Library[edit]

Nomination of System bus model for deletion[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article System bus model is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/System bus model until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article.

Hello, an update: the AfD was closed with lack of consensus. I waffled a bit since I wanted to create a system bus article which I have done now. I suspect that removed most of the objections to the deletion, so the question is what to do next. You seem the original author? In particular, there is some discussion of the main source used, which appears to have some errors or at least glosses over details. There also seems a new version of the book is out, but we only have a snippet view. So if you have the original source, your opinion would be greatly appreciated at the talk page. Thanks much. Also you seem the original uploader (three years ago) of File:Systembusmodel.png which I redid with Inkscape as File:Computer system bus.svg. I also fixed what seems an error. The CPU is equal to the ALU, registers, and controls, not part of the box. Does this seem reasonable? Also I credited where the diagram seems to come, although it is probably widely done similarly. DC Meetup 23 & Annual Membership Meeting

Wikimedia District of Columbia, the newest officially recognized chapter, is holding its Annual Membership Meeting at 1pm on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at the Tenley-Friendship Neighborhood Library.

Agenda items include:

  • election of the Board of Directors for the next two years
  • approval of a budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year
  • report on the activities and accomplishments of the past year

You are invited to the National Archives ExtravaSCANza, taking place every day next week from January 4–7, Wednesday to Saturday, in College Park, Maryland (Washington, DC metro area). Come help me cap off my stint as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives with one last success!

This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us!
