One of Us Is Lying is a contemporary, young adult mystery/suspense novel by author Karen M. McManus. The book is her debut novel, originally published in the US by Delacorte Press, an imprint of Penguin Random House, on the 30th May, 2017.
The book follows the investigation into the suspicious death of student Simon Kelleher, creator of the school gossip app 'About That', after a fatal allergic reaction during detention. When his death is ruled as non-accidental, the four other students in attendance — Bronwyn, Nate, Cooper, and Addy — are the main suspects, as they all have secrets that were about to feature on the app.
The book uses multiperspectivity to show the points-of-view of all four student suspects, and is frequently described as a cross between The Breakfast Club and Pretty Little Liars.[1] It has received several accolades including a 79-week run on the New York Times best-seller list.[2]

Plot[edit]

The story begins when the five major characters — Bronwyn, Simon, Nate, Cooper, and Addy — attend detention with teacher Mr. Avery after he found phones in each of their school bags, which is against the high school's no-phone policy. During their detention they hear the sounds of a collision coming from the school parking lot, and while the students investigate through the window, Mr. Avery leaves to see if he can help. Simon — creator of the 'About That' gossip app in which the personal lives of students at the fictional American high school, Bayview High, are posted for the rest of the school to see — begins a speech about the stereotypical personalities of the other four students and how he, through the medium of his app, is the omniscient narrator, then drinks water from a plastic cup, announcing that it "tastes like crap", then suffers a fatal allergic reaction.
Initially the incident is considered an accident, however after a tumblr post is shared claiming that Simon's death was planned and killer watched him die, the police begin to investigate and find an unpublished post by Simon that features the secrets of each of the other four from detention. The four students are initially suspicious of one another, wondering which of them is the guilty culprit, however they begin to appreciate each other's company as the uncomfortable weeks at school pass; romantically for Bronwyn and Nate, then a closer friendship between Addy and Cooper, and eventually friendship between all four.
As the story progresses, the investigation receives media attention, with news teams and reporters turning up at the students houses, the school, and other locations frequented by the 'Bayview four' — the nickname used by the news for the suspects.

Characters[edit]

  • Bronwyn Rojas: One of the four point-of-view characters; the 'geek'. An overachiever whose primary secret is she cheated on her chemistry exam is order to maintain her straight-A status.
  • Nate Macauley: One of the four point-of-view characters; the 'criminal'. A classic 'bad boy' whose primary secret is that he has been continuing to sell drugs while on probation for the same misdemeanour.
  • Addy Prentiss: One of the four point-of-view characters; the 'prom queen'. A high school socialite whose primary secret is that she cheated on her boyfriend with another boy within their friendship group.
  • Cooper Clay: One of the four point-of-view characters; the 'jock'. A promising baseball star whose primary secret is that he is gay.
  • Simon Kelleher: Self-proclaimed omniscient narrator and creator of About That, the gossip app revolving around the students of the fictional American high school, Bayview High. His death acts as a catalyst for the events of the story, and the rumours and secrets told in his app are what implicate the others in detention as suspects for his murder.
  • Maeve Rojas: Bronwyn's younger sister. She takes a proactive role alongside Bronwyn in trying to solve the murder. She has also been featured in a post by Simon.
  • Jake Riordan: Addy's boyfriend. He has a controlling nature, and when Addy's secret comes to light he breaks up with her.
  • Ashton Prentiss: Addy's older sister. Has a rocky relationship with her husband, Charlie, so spends a lot of time at the family home. She dislikes Jake and the way he treats Addy.
  • Janae: Simon's friend. A 'goth girl' who is left distraught after Simon's death, and whom Addy later befriends.
  • Eli Kleinfelter: Lawyer who works for the television news programme, Until Proven.

Reception[edit]

Reception of One of Us Is Lying has been mostly positive, receiving many awards and nominations, primarily within the Young Adult category.
Reviewer Mary Cosola of Common Sense Media comments that the plot "raises lots of ethical questions" and "provides good discussion topics", receiving an overall rating of four-stars, with an age-rating of 14+.[4]
Nivea Serrao of Entertainment Weekly praises the author for the nuanced characters and their development, and for challenging the initial stereotypes, but notes that the slow reveal of the secrets leaves the reader with less time to engage with the ending's more fully developed characters.[5]
Kirkus Reviews acknowledges the "insights into common adolescent struggles" and "opportunities for self-reflection" for young readers, also rating the book for readers between 14-18, however critizes that author's use of language and the plot, which they suggest "border on cliché". It also mentions how, although Bronwyn, Maeve, and their father's side of the family are Columbian, the cast is predominantly white.[6]
A review from Medium also references the development of the originally stereotypical main characters and how the topics raise thought-provoking discussions, and goes on to praise the inclusion of LGBTQIA characters, but comments on how, although depression and psychological issues are depicted within the story, they are not fully explored.[7] The review also mentions the book's potential for an on-screen adaptation.

The House of Marley LLC is a retail audio electronics company. It was founded by Rohan Marley in 2008.[3] Inspired by his father Bob Marley's "vision of universal love, music, and respect for our planet",[4][5] their main aim is to provide commercial audio products, primarily focused on speakers and headphones, that are created using sustainably sourced and envionmentally-friendly materials.[6][7] Their main US headquarters can be found within the Commerce Township of the Detroit area, Michigan.[8][9]

Project Marley[edit]

Project Marley is a campaign for the support of reforestation around the world.[10] In association with the One Tree Planted organisation, a percentage of each product sale is donated to the charity and one tree is planted in one of four areas around the world; North America, Latin America, Asia, or Africa.[11] Alongside other companies and organisations such as Unilever, the purpose of the project is to implement corporate responsibility, promoting awareness and involvement against deforestation and environmental pollution, and to improve environmental health, biodiversity, and sustainable economic growth.

The company frequently reference their aim to use only recycled and recycleable, environmentally-friendly and responsibly-sourced materials used to create their products, with the hashtag #MaterialsMatter.[12][13]

House of Marley produce a selection of different in-ear and on/over-ear, wired and wireless, bluetooth-compatible headphones and earbuds, all equipt with an intergrated microphone and made with the brand-wide sustainable materials. The range of product availability varying depending on customer location.

Speakers[edit]

They produce a variety of different speaker options, varying in size, water-resistant/water-proof material options, portability, battery life/play-time, wireless capabilities, and price. The Get Up Stand Up Bluetooth speaker was awarded ‘Best Bluetooth Speakers of 2016’ by SpeakerGuys.com (now SoundGuys[14]).[15] The No Bounds XL bluetooth wireless speaker was named the annual CES Innovation Awards' Honoree in Sustainability And Eco-Design for 2019.[16][17]

Turntables[edit]

The Stir It Up turntable is the company's first and only turntable currently in production, made with the brand-wide sustainable materials and can be used wirelessly or connected, able to digitise records with PC connection.[18]

Product reception is varied, often with the price range of the specific product being a main factor in regards to customer feedback and reviews. Product reviews on the official US and UK websites display the most helpful 'favourable' and 'critical' rated comments of a product side-by-side.[26][27]

According to Trustpilot, House of Marley UK have received an overall rating of Excellent; 9.1/10, 84% of reviews awarding five stars and 10% four stars, with the majority of the negative reviews commenting on customer service or delivery issues.[28]

The company is praised for its use of sustainable and eco-friendly materials.[29]

The Smile Jamaica headphones, or 'earbuds', are the most reviewed product in the range, and of all available products on the official website, demonstrating its popularity with 152 five-star reviews and an overall rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars.[30]
