Blue is a fictional female velociraptor[2] who appears in the Jurassic World trilogy and related media. She debuted in the 2015 film Jurassic World and returns for both of its sequels, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Jurassic World Dominion. Blue also has appearances in the Netflix series Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous[3] and the virtual reality series Jurassic World: Blue,[4][5][6][7] as well as various books and video games. Blue is among the most popular Jurassic Park dinosaurs, alongside Rexy, and has become a fan favorite in the franchise,[8][9] and has recieved extensive merchandising such as toys, puppets, clothing, plushies, pillows, and statues.[10][11][12][13][14]

Blue was domesticated[2][15] and raised by Owen Grady, a relationship that Chris Pratt considers like that of a parent and child.[16] As of Dominion, Blue remains close to Owen and views him as an equal.[17] Owen raised her alongside three sisters, Delta, Echo, and Charlie, who died during the events of Jurassic World. She also has three cousins named Bravo,[18] Sierra,[19][20] and Tango.[20][21] Between Fallen Kingdom and Dominion, Blue became the parent to an asexually reproduced daughter named Beta.[22][23][24] Her ability to reproduce asexually is the result of her genetic makeup including the DNA of black-throated monitor,[3][22][25] which also gave Blue her namesake stripes.[26]

Blue is capable of empathy[27] and loyalty,[28] and is extremely intelligent.[29] During and following the events of Fallen Kingdom, Blue's role in the franchise developed into being a protagonist and hero;[1][27] additionally, she was given more anthropomorphic traits, a decision made by Fallen Kingdom director J.A. Bayona.[27] She is 5.57 feet (1.70 metres) tall, 12.79 feet (3.90 metres) long, and weighs 226 kilograms (498 pounds).[30]

Biography[edit]

Pre-series[edit]

InGen scientists created Blue for the IBRIS Project in, making her the first velociraptor created for Jurassic World and the largest. Following her hatching, Owen Grady imprinted on Blue, allowing her to be trained by, and to form a bond with, him. Additionally occurring during her youth, Blue battled her sister Echo for dominance over their pack, a battle that Blue won.

Jurassic World[edit]

Blue and her three sisters, Charlie, Delta, and Echo, were introduced as attempting to kill Leon, a new Jurassic World employee, during one of their training sessions in which he had attempted to capture a pig that escaped into the raptor paddock. He was saved by Owen Grady, the velociraptors' trainer and caregiver.

The velociraptors later take part in hunting the Indominus rex after Owen Grady was forced by InGen head of security Vic Hoskins to use his velociraptors for the mission. However, as the hunt took place, the velociraptors communicated with the Indominus rex and accepted her as their new alpha, and the involved InGen troopers were killed by Blue and her sisters in the ensuing chaos, leaving only Owen and co-worker Barry as survivors of the team sent after the Indominus rex. Blue attempted to kill Barry during this time, however he was saved by Owen, who lured her away from him.

Blue, Delta, and Echo (as Charlie was killed prior by an RPG during the Indominus rex hunt) later caught up with Owen, Claire, Zach, and Gray at the park's Main Street. Owen regained the velociraptors' trust, but the Indominus rex arrived and ordered them to kill the humans. However, Blue vocally refused and was nearly killed. While she was left unconscious by the Indominus rex's attack, her sisters would be killed fighting against the hybrid alongside Owen and the resident T-Rex would be unleashed to fight the Indominus rex. Blue returned into the fight before the hybrid could kill the T-Rex, whom she assisted in the fight and forced the Indominus rex towards the Mosasaurus lagoon, resulting in her being dragged to the bottom of the lagoon by the Mosasaurus. Blue and Rexy parted ways peacefully and after turning to Owen, she realized that her siblings were all dead. She ran off into the night at this realization, letting out a mournful cry.

Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous[edit]

Sometime prior to the events of Jurassic World, during the episodes "Camp Cretaceous" and "Secrets", Blue attacked campers Darius and Kenji, who had sneaked into the Velociraptor Paddock. The children were saved from the velociraptors by the camp counselor Dave. Blue additionally appeared in episodes "End of the Line", "A Beacon of Hope", and "Step One", however these appearances were all relativity minor. Respectively, the episodes featured her roaming freely on the now abandoned Isla Nublar, traversing through the park's underground tunnels, and briefly returning to the velociraptor paddock.

Blue returned again, more significantly, in the episode "Chaos Theory", joining various dinosaurs peacefully at the watering hole. In the episode, she narrowly avoided being the first animal poached by big game hunters Tiff and Mitch, being saved only when the campers caused a stampede of dinosaurs. Blue quickly fled from the chaos, avoiding the fate.

In the "Hidden Adventure" interactive episode, Blue appeared following the incident in which the campers fled a Tarbosaurus. The children discovered footage of the velociraptors filmed before the Jurassic World incident. After the campers were prompted by this footage to head to the velociraptor paddock to find the missing letter seen in the footage, they discovered Blue to be residing in her former home. The campers used the recovered footage to distract Blue with the sounds of her siblings, resulting in Blue becoming enraged with grief at the sight of her deceased siblings in the footage and destroying the camera. By the time she turns again, the campers had evacuated from her home.

Blue returned again in the season 3 episode "Clever Girl", shown as now hunting compsognathus in the Jurassic Park Visitor Center while campers Darius, Yazmina, and Kenji were hiding there. At the moment the campers tried to leave the center, Blue confronted and later chased them as they escape in a car. They eventually crashed the car, which landed upon Blue, leaving her defenseless as compsognathus surrounded her and prepare to consume her. The campers saved Blue by chasing off the compsognathus and lifting the car off her. Blue prepares to defend herself from the campers until Darius intimates Owen's pose of raising his hand at the velociraptors and she recognizes him as someone who can be trusted. Blue later saved the campers from the pair of attacking Scorpios rex, a fight which resulted in the Visitor Center collapsing, killing the hybrids as Blue and the campers escaped with their lives.

Blue was absent from Season 4, however, she did return for the Season 5 episode "Out of the Pack". When Kenji led his father, Hawkes, Lewis Dodgson, and others to the collapsed Visitor Center in an attempt to capture Blue, they found no signs of her. Their attempts to draw her out and capture her only result in her fleeing the ruins. Blue led the group into dilophosaurus territory and left them to fight for their lives as she finally escaped being tracked.

Jurassic World: Blue[edit]

Blue is the focus of a two-part virtual reality miniseries, titled Jurassic World: Blue. It was released for Oculus VR headsets as a Fallen Kingdom tie-in. It depicts Blue on Isla Nublar at the time of the volcanic eruption.[4][5][6][7] During the narrative, Blue witnessed the volcano becoming active again. After this, she had various negative encounters a baby triceratops, a pteranodon, an angry mother baryonyx protecting her eggs, and even Rexy herself, all before she hides from InGen helicopters flying over the island.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom[edit]

The film revealed that Blue, who was still alive following the events of Jurassic World: Blue, and the other dinosaurs of Isla Nublar now faced the peril of an impending eruption of the island's previously dormant volcano, Mt. Sibo. Eli Mills claimed that she is the last surviving member of her species; however, this claim was previously disproven by the duo of velociraptors in Camp Cretaceous and would continue to be disproven when velociraptors from Isla Sorna are discovered in Canada[31] and Malta[32] during the events of Dominion. In Fallen Kingdom, Owen Grady watches an old training video of himself with Blue and her deceased sisters. Whereas Delta attacked him with he feigned being injured, Blue showed empathy and comforted him.

When the rescue mission began, Blue and Owen were reunited at her nesting ground near the damaged Jurassic Park Explorer 04. He attempted to rekindle their bond, but Blue was wary of him at first, though eventually recognizing him. She attempted to touch his palm with her snout, but she and Owen were interrupted by the InGen mercenaries, who attempted to tranquilize Blue. This enraged Blue, who attacked and killed one of the mercenaries, but not before being shot by him as he was dying. Blue was left mortally wounded but loaded into a cage and taken to the East Dock with various other dinosaurs that would be sold at Lockwood Manor.

Onboard the ship, Zia explained to Ken Wheatly that only she can save Blue's life. As she attempted to stop the bleeding until she can have proper equipment on the mainland, Owen, Claire, and Franklin are finally reunited with Zia and Blue. Discovering that Blue was hemorrhaging and in immense pain, Owen attempted to comfort Blue. Zia told them that she cannot remove the bullet unless she also performed a blood transfusion from a two- or three-clawed dinosaur. Zia and Franklin remained with Blue while Owen and Claire acquired blood from Rexy to use for the transfusion. The transfusion was given to Blue via an IV while Claire applied pressure to Blue's leg wound so that Zia could remove the bullet. All these factors saved Blue's life.

Arriving at the mainland, Blue was immediately locked within a cage in Dr. Henry Wu's lab below Lockwood Manor. Zia was also taken captive and handcuffed to the cage when she refused to take samples of Blue's blood after being ordered by Ken to do so. Following the Indoraptor escape, Wu ordered Franklin, who was posing as a geneticist, to get him equipment to draw blood samples from Blue. He intended to use her blood to create new Indoraptor specimens who would be capable of loyalty and follow Blue as their alpha female. When Wu became frustrated with Zia's refusal to help, she revealed that Blue was given a blood transfusion from the T-Rex, enraging Wu further. At this point, Franklin stabbed Wu in the neck with a tranquilizer and freed Zia from her handcuffs. When two guards attempted to stop them from leaving as a third guard took Wu away to safety, Zia released Blue, who attacked and killed both guards, before all three narrowly escaped an explosion caused by a stray bullet hitting a tank of flammable gas.

Blue founm her way to the manor's upper levels just in time to save Owen and Maisie from the Indoraptor. Blue and the Indoraptor battled throughout the mansion's upper levels until she was forced to surrender to the stronger dinosaur, at which point he resumed hunting the humans. Before he could kill Owen, Claire, or Maisie, Blue returned on the roof and attacked the Indoraptor, sending him falling to his death below, where he was fatally impaled on the horns of the Agujaceratops skull in Lockwood's museum. After giving a victory cry, Blue ran outside to eventually reunite with Owen, Claire, Maisie, Zia, and Franklin. Owen requested Blue to come with them so she would be safe, but she noticed the nearby cage and, not wanting to be confined again, ran off to be free like the other dinosaurs after giving Owen a final glance.

Blue is last seen overlooking a suburban neighborhood in California, calling out four times at the early morning.

Jurassic World Dominion[edit]

Four years since the events of Fallen Kingdom, Blue now lived in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and had given birth to a daughter, Beta, via asexual reproduction. She built her new nest in an abandoned school bus near the cabin where Owen, Claire, and Maisie now live, unaware of the velociraptors' prescence.

On the day Blue decided to begin teaching her daughter how to hunt, the rabbit they were hunting is killed by a wolf. Beta attacked the wolf, and as she was killing it, became the target for poachers. Though their shot missed Beta, Blue was enraged and attacked the hunters, killing at least one of the duo. Owen heard the roars from his cabin, but did not investigate.

Beta eventually discovered Owen's cabin and Maisie made attempts to befriend the young velociraptor. Blue arrived, angered by Beta and Maisie's interaction, but Owen managed to defuse the situation and Blue left with her daughter. Later the same day, the velociraptors fall victim to a poacher ambush in which Blue was ran off the road and her daughter was captured alongside Maisie. Enraged, Blue made her way back to Owen's cabin, where she confronted him and he initially failed to calm her, earning a scar to his hand in the process. Owen promised Blue he would bring Beta back to her and she ran off into the forest without further conflict.

Though Blue was absent from the remainder of the movie, with help from Alan Grant, Beta would eventually be rescued by Owen and Maisie. In the end, Owen, Claire, and Maisie returned Beta to the mountains and waited for Blue to return. Beta reunited with her mother and they ran off into the wilderness. Blue returned a moment later to give Owen a look of appreciation and say goodbye before heading back into the wilderness for a second time.

Production[edit]

Animatronic and special effects[edit]

Blue has been portrayed by a mixture of CGI and animatronics throughout the franchise,[33][34][35] in addition to motion capture[36][37] and maquettes.[38][39] The animatronic of Blue cost $500,000 to create and was operated by up to one dozen people. Daniella Pineda noted its realism: "It would sweat, its eyes would dilate if hit by light, it had pulsing veins, it felt like reptile skin. It was just the most realistic thing that I'd ever worked with, and it felt like I was working with a real animal."[40]

The animatronic was constructed from foam latex to create the skin, internal framing to create its skeleton, cables, rods, and radio signals.[41] It features various realistic movements, noted by John Archer of Forbes to include a "whipping tail, flailing limbs, pulsing veins, flaring nostrils, snapping jaw, thrashing head and blinking, rolling eyes."[41]

In Fallen Kingdom, CGI and visual effects for Blue were provided by Image Engine.[42]

Jurasssic World[edit]

Jurassic World underwent a lengthy development period. By 2004, writers William Monahan and John Sayles had written drafts that featured Nick Harris, a former mercenary who takes a job training a team of five Deinonychus to go on missions.[43][44] This idea was suggested by executive producer Steven Spielberg, who believed that it still had potential despite rejecting the early drafts.[44] Jurassic World inherited concepts from the rejected drafts, including the concept of trained raptors like Blue.[9]

In 2015, Colin Treverrow stated that on set, the raptors in Jurassic World were represented by actors in raptor heads before being replaced digitally with motion-capture models.[45]

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom[edit]

For the film, Neal Scanlan's team created a Blue animatronic that was laid on an operating table, for a scene depicting the animal after an injury. The animatronic was operated by a dozen puppeteers hidden under the table.[33] The scene was shot with and without the animatronic, and the two versions were combined during post-production.[46] The animatronic was made of foam latex skin built around a skeleton-like frame controlled by a combination of cable systems, rods and, in the case of some of the smaller areas of movement, radio signals.[47] Modified penguin noises were used during this scene to provide a purring sound for Blue.[48]

To create Blue's CGI appearances, the ILM animators referred to the previous film.[34] David Vickery of ILM said that Blue's movements were designed to resemble a dog: "You look at the way Blue cocks her head and looks up at you. It's exactly like a dog. You're trying to sort of connect the dinosaur with things that you understand as a human".[49] Small puppets were also used to depict Owen's raptors as babies.[50]

Jurassic World: Dominion[edit]

Reception[edit]

Blue has been described as "the Jurassic Park franchise's most important character", and "more important than Owen, Dr. Alan Grant... or even the Tyrannosaurus rex".[8] She has also been called "the main dinosaur star of the franchise".[9]

Audiences reacted positively to Blue when Jurassic World released[28] and she quickly became the face of the series, receiving extensive merchandising. She represents the Jurassic World trilogy's departure from the original three Jurassic Park films, being the first raptor in the franchise to be given extensive characterization,[51] such as being capable of empathy, killing only antagonistic humans, and even protecting Owen and Maisie from the Indoraptor.[27]
