User:RobLa/Decade articles

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is my documentation of my update of the decade articles, using a rather rudimentary system.

Description[edit]

First the list of articles that I've used this on:

My system for working on these has been to copy every bullet point from the corresponding year pages (e.g. my big additions to 1840s was the addition of the 1840, 1841, 1842, etc articles to the 1840s article). Sorting the bullet points by categories helped make narratives emerge. For big events, I would then figure out how to convert the resulting sections into prose. My conversion has also traditionally been copying+adapting prose from other articles.

I was using this technique to maintain my basic goal of an edit a month for a while. The process doesn't result in greatness, but I think it results in betterness.  :-) It also has helped me learn a lot about the period of history that I was covering.

A challenge of this technique is that it seems to reflect the bias of English Wikipedia as a whole (very Anglo-centric). The good part about this is that it lays that bias bare, and almost forces me to learn more about parts of the world.
