Hi, saw your request for Royal Navy pictures and thought I should mention that I've tracked one down for the second HMS Colossus from 1890; due to its age it should be public domain but of course I can't upload it yet because uploads are disabled at the moment.

Hi, you've been adding some great RN stuff! (I would do some, but I have no detailed sources :-( - what have you been using?) For the articles that get big, like HMS Colossus, it's useful to break them up by specific ship, a la HMS Warrior or the US Navy ships, that way links from battles and such can go directly to the right ship. Otherwise the reader has the disconcerting experience of clicking on a link in Battle of Jutland and seeing text on an 18th-century SOL - they may not realize that they need to click down. Also it will be quicker downloading when the pictures get added - won't get irrelevant pics. Stan 19:33, 3 Jan 2004 (UTC)
Thanks :-) Ok i'll try and do the one ship one page thing. Have to try and get used to that. Basically i've been using various sources on the net, digesting the info' and then using my own way of writing the article. I'll try and keep adding more RN stuff, hopefully my fingers won't drop off :-) Oh by the way, I was kind of perplexed by the article NAeL Minas Gerais. In this BBC link HMS Vengeance it says that it could be docked at Falmouth. It's dated 21st December 2002 so it quite new. One of the interesting emergent properties of a bunch of interlinked Wikipedia articles is that mistakes in the source materials start showing up as inconsistencies. I don't know what the answer is in this case, but in several cases I've gotten good info by simply emailing people and asking questions, or asking for their comments on the WP article. I'd like to second Stan's appreciation for your work on the RN. I have contributed some articles on that myself, but I don't have sources for quite a lot of the older ships beyond very general knowledge. At the moment, I'm making stub articles, with the standard table for RN ships, if I've written it and if it's necessary, a link to the appropriate MediaWiki message, a link to the MediaWiki stub message, and recently, a standard text hopefully linking to the general article on the ship name.
BTW, I've done a list of RFA ships, which includes similar stub articles, and also includes data on pennant numbers, which can be very difficult to find for RFA ships. There's a site hosted by BT Internet that, whilst not updated for a couple of years, is a fantastic sources on postwar RN and especially RFA ships. It's certainly good that people are getting info' on the British armed forces onto Wiki', as a lot of sites that do have information on them are disapearing from the 'net, sadly. So Wiki' really is becoming a good source of information for the British, indeed other nations armed forces, for people wanting to find out about them. Hi. Sorry, it was a typo on the Leander-class article. It was meant to be Type 12, which were known as the Rothesay and Whitby classes. So both articles are quite correct. I've spent the last few days working on a new ship table template to enable us to centralise the editing of things like weapons outfits for a particular class of ships in one template (so with the Fletchers or Gearings or other big classes you only have to edit in one place to alter a mistake rather than in dozens or hundreds). Please have a look at the WikiProject Ships page's talk section and see what you think. I haven't written the instructions for using it yet, and I want to see whether there are any table cells people would like me to include that aren't present yet. I wasn't sure whether to do a "British Army in World War I" or a "Military history of the United Kingdom during World War I". However, I think there is scope for a British Army-only history to cover things that were important to the army such as changes in command, the formation and disbandment of armies and corps, and so on — stuff that's a bit too detailed for a all-encompassing military history. One minor point: The new info box headers are well spaced but the info on the right is somewhat squashed up and truncated wrapping text onto the next line in an untidy way. Is it possible to widen the info box or drop the info text below the headings to use up the width more evenly?
I agree with you that unbordered box's are better. I think the problem may lie in that the box seems split unevenly due to the length of the formal title 'Colonel of The Regiment'. Personally I don't have a problem with that format of title, that is what they are these days, but they do actually control things as opposed to being a figurehead like the Colonel in Chief is. SoLando; I have received a reply to e-mail from Sir Evelyn, The Title 'Honorary Colonel' would not be correct however it can be shortened to 'Colonel', This would not be confuse with the commanding officer of the Regiment who is known as a 'CO' and a Lieutenant Colonel in rank, Incidentally the current CO of the Duke of Wellington' Regiment is Lieutenant Colonel Phil Lewis MBE. He has also noted in the article on the 8th Duke of Wellington that his Post Nominals include the O.StJ. It is hosted by an organisation that is specifically devoted to informing museums and archives about copyright term lengths so I thought that it, and its companion PDFs referenced in the British copyright law article that I am largely the author of are reliable. To answer the question that you left on my talk page, then yes unpublished crown copyright photographs from 1954 or earlier are out of copyright.
This comes from the original treatment of all photographs by the Copyright Act 1911. Up until 1995 all photographs had a copyright term based on 50 years. The 1911 Act did not distinguish between published and unpublished photographs so photographs made during the time that Act was in force had a copyright term of 50 years from creation whether published or not. The Copyright Act 1956 did distinguish between published and unpublished photographs, with the former getting the 50 year term and the latter the perpetual copyright of unpublished works. In line with British legal precedent that only applied to photographs made after the commencement of the 1956 Act, ie 30 June 1957. The Copyrights Designs and Patents Act 1988 kept the 50 year term but ended the perpetual copyright protection of unpublished works, with a 50 year transitional period from commencement of the 1988 Act, ie from 1st August 1989 to 1st August 2039. Again it did not alter the status of works made before commencement in line with British legal practice, so photographs taken before 30 June 1957 still kept their 50 year copyright term whether published or unpublished.
All that changed in 1995 when the EU 'harmonized' copyright terms (despite the fact that things like French copyright law not counting the years during WWI and WWII towards the +70 years still exist). That meant that photograph copyright changed to being the same as that of other artistic works, ie life of the author plus 70 years. Importantly, unlike the 1911 Act, 1956 Act and 1988 Act the EU legislation was retrospective. The only class of works that it did not affect were Crown copyright photographs, which remain as they were, ie 50 years from creation for any photograph taken before 30 June 1957.

Hi Joel, I noticed too and was in the process of resolving it. I've seen the photo in Keegan's The Face of Battle (where he reckons it is August-September 1914) and in a 1915 issue of The War Illustrated (where I scanned it from) but in neither of those places was the unit identified. So I posted a question to the Great War forums and the response I had is that they are 4th Battalion, King's Liverpools and that, despite the un-trench like setting, it is 1915. Apparently the photo is featured in King’s Regiment Museum in the Museum of Liverpool Life so there might be more information there.
Certainly your image name is more accurate than mine so mine should be the one deleted. If we wait for more information, it might be possible to come up with a still better name.
I'm not sure which image is better. Mine was scanned from 90-year old newsprint, is lower resolution, and is banded from the lines of text on the other side of the page, but I feel it is slightly sharper in the foreground (though not sharper in the background). They are both cropped slightly differently. Wherever they are eventually placed, I would upload the one that won't be used first, and upload the other over it so that both are in the history. Your sharpened image is clearly the best. I think the resolution of the firstworldwar.com image is needlessly high. Perhaps something around 1000 pixels wide is enough (though of course, I would include the full size scan in the image history.)
If indeed it is the 4th King's, they joined the Sirhind Brigade on 6 March 1915 and the photo was first published in May 1915, so that places the action, if it was in battle, at Neuve Chapelle, or possibly Aubers Ridge. I think a title like "4th_Battalion_Kings_Regiment_1915.jpg" would be good enough unless you want to wait to gather more information. Feel free to upload over my Commons photo until such time was we decide on a name. Then you or I can move the Commons:Image:British infantry skirmish 1914.jpg history to the new name. Is it just me, or is the atmosphere in this place getting more poisonous every day? I've just had another run in with WP:AFD, after promising myself never to darken its doors again, after undeleting an article. I just don't understand the Delete nn mentality. I don't know what we can do, other than keep an eye out on all our watchlists. But something like 70% of articles are unwatched (see Special:Unwatchedpages) so it's something of a lost cause. AFD is far too large to keep an eye on, and I stopped once I found that it was dragging me down into a mire of bad-faith. The deletion reform can't come soon enough. I just hope that the deletionist tendency doesn't have its way and that the work-in-progress articles will be allowed to continue. I like an idea that Kirill had on the mailing list of assigning deletion to the projects, it means that you've more chance of getting informed comment. Leithp 08:37, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
Lost causes are a forte of mine ;-) Until deletion reform arrives (and I have to admit, I'm quite cynical about how positive an impact it will have), frequent NP patrols can save many otherwise unfortunate articles :-) Kirill's proposal seems really interesting.....decentralistion is imperative, in my opinion. The whole AFD structure just seems to be so cumbersome.....I can almost see the tub of lard and a 10 ton ball and chain! Ah well. On to something more upbeat. How goes your Brian Horrocks article? Ah, my Horrocks project seems to have pretty much stalled. I need to add an awful lot of content about Market Garden, which I have a very sketchy knowledge of and some stuff about his time in Russia. My stuff about Russia is a series of anecdotes which I've no idea how to put into a coherent form. The whole article reads like a work in progress and I think needs serious copyediting as well as a lot more work before I can put it forward for peer review or as a FAC. A very good idea over on m:Association of Inclusionist Wikipedians is to have a Wiki(pedia) Recycle Bin, where threatened or deleted articles can get a second chance. Proof further that if you have a good idea, chances are someone has already thought of it. We need to support it...or if it does'nt take off and we cant find/come up with a better one, nick it and claim it for our own :>
One of the things I like about my M8, O'Connor is, he was a very prolific writer of letters, memos, orders, suggestions...you name it. Everything but his memoirs. Horrocks, on the other hand, wrote a very good autobiography, but did'nt seem to leave as much of a paper trail otherwise. This makes him a lot more friendly to the casual reader but a formidable foe for the serious researcher (hello:). Now that I have gotten reinforcements for La Grande Armee, I might be able to shift some forces your way to help out with Market Garden and on the Maruth line. The autobiography is a very well written and interesting book, but it was written twenty years after the events. The two biographys I have basically use it as their only source, apparently because Horrocks' memory had become faulty and he'd destroyed all his notes when moving house (why would you do that?!?). By re-telling the stories so many times he couldn't remember the events any more, just the anecdotes. He co-wrote a book called "Corps Commander", which goes into more detail about Market Garden. I'm planning to use this to expand the section, but it retreads a lot of the ground of the autobiography. Having said all this, the main reason it hasn't been expanded is that I'm too lazy to do it.
On a different subject, can either of you two go over and take a look at Arthur Ernest Percival? Nickhk has totally re-written it (it was an embarassment before) and it looks extremely comprehensive to me. It might be a good FAC. Leithp 08:48, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

I wouldn't mind having some for the King's Regiment :-( I'd like to help somehow with the article (I'll even do my utmost to ensure any additions aren't identifiable as being my grammar ;-)). The Percival article looks really good.....that photo of him with the Japanese commanders....why am I suddenly thinking of Lord Percy Percy? I'd prefer if there was more detail on his early life in WWI, and the intro' should be expanded. Also, Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel of the Cheshire Regiment in 1959? What the hell!? Was it an honory position, or did he actually command a battalion? That does need clarifying. And perhaps some mention should be made of Brig. I'm honoured :-) Well, I believe that there is really only one major field omitted from Infobox Military Unit: "Colonel of the Regiment", informally known as "Honorary Colonel" (or though that is, apparently, inaccurate, but meh!). An "Alliances" parameter might be useful, though one regiment can hold many alliances (see Royal Anglian Regiment for an example), but that can be circumvented by creating a section in the article. Maybe a Freedom(s) (of the city) field? Other than that, I believe that the transition from Infobox:British Army regiment to Infobox Military Unit would be seamless :-) SoLando (Talk) 02:31, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

The "Ceremonial chief" parameter would be better retained for "Colonel-in-Chief", a position usually reserved for a member of the royal family. I've just updated the info box on the Duke of Wellington's Regiment page with the Current Commanding officer and posting location. I also went to change the info title Ceremonial Colonel to Colonel in Chief, which is the official title, as Ceremonial Colonel is considered derogatory, those who hold the position are invariably ex serving officers with an official rank, Usually Brigadiers or Generals. Mind you it's not too important here as the Dukes are being merged with others on the 6th of June and the Colonel in Chief and Colonel of the Regiments positions will become redundant. However I must have done something wrong as now the position does not show at all! Sorry!! but could you take a look and correct my error?

Yes, as there is no "Colonel in Chief" parameter in the Template:Infobox Military Unit's syntax, changing "Ceremonial chief" will result in the field being omitted in an article's infobox. Hi Joel, I was hoping you could use your admin powers and do me a favour. I have tried to get a bad page move corrected through normal channels (Requested moves) without any success. First day on the Somme was moved to Battle of Albert (1914) and then cut-and-pasted back so that it can't be restored. Would you be able to fix it? Delete the current first day on the Somme (history) and move the current Battle of Albert (1914) back to first day on the Somme then revert it to a correct version prior to the move (25 February or thereabouts)? Military history WikiProject Newsletter, Issue I[edit]
An independent military history peer review has been created for the benefit of the project. A number of articles have already been reviewed, receiving significantly more feedback within the project than they did on the generic peer review page.
Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Military history WikiProject's newsletter! We hope that this new format will help members—especially those who may be unable to keep up with some of the rapid developments that tend to occur—find new groups and programs within the project that they may wish to participate in.
Please consider this inital issue to be a prototype; as always, any comments and suggestions are quite welcome, and will help us improve the newsletter in the coming months.
Proposed guidelines for categories of military people are currently being discussed. A number of issues have already been resolved, but the proposed scheme is still in draft form and further input would be very welcome.

Do you know about this "Mercia Rifles" regiment that keeps appearing on the Structure of the British Army article? I can't find any mention of it anywhere using Google. Hammersfan 05/05/06, 16.15 BST
No, I've never heatd of the "Mercia Rifles". These ips have also added this "unit" to British Army Infantry and List of British Army regiments (1994)/2008. What do you do to make the person's IP address clickable with also a talk link in brackets afterwards too? Put one bracket, two brackets, special brackets? See here. Or is it customary to copy the whole link manually like I just did now?
To generates a User + talk (and contribs) automatically, just include User| before the name, eg SoLando (talk·contribs). If you wish to sign your name with a timestamp, use four tides ~~~~ , which generates SoLando 13:03, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
In an edit summary, you don't need to adhere to such formalities, just simplify it to "rv vandalism" or "rv vandal ip", etc. As an admin, I have rollback, which automatically generates a link to the reverted user. Hi there! Looks good. Sources for many RN vessels can be scarce. I have no hesitation in saying I'm not knowledgeable of naval history. If you look at the categories, I've kept the current regiments in each list, but removed the regiments that no longer exist back to the old category. I just wanted to ask you about user 125.236.44.47. This user was vandalizing pages today and I thank you for blocking them and fixing the pages. However, I don't know why they were only temporarily blocked. If you look at their user history, they have been given a "last warning" three times! Just block them permanently; their record more than demonstrates reason. I would also ask that administrators would look at users' histories. Hi there! Blocks of ip addresses must be made in accordance with Wikipedia policy, which permits only open proxy and "zombie" ips to be blocked indefintely. For more imformation, pertinent pages are located at Wikipedia:Blocking policy and Wikipedia:Indefinite blocks. If you encounter any ips vandaliising with an extensive history of abusing Wikipedia's editing privilegese, there is Wikipedia:Abuse reports. Yeah, there was a template, and you had to go to the talk page to find the link to it each time you wanted to edit. I don't know how to change that, so if you can, that's good. What does annoy me is people putting things on those battleship pages that don't belong there, and also deleting stuff that SHOULD be there (see german steam battleships for this one). But change it to make it more consistent and to get rid of the templates all you want. thanks :)

Hello Remember the dot! I appreciate that you are abiding by process when alerting me, via multiple generic messages, to the impending deletion of images that I have uploaded. But the volume is quite disconcerting as these photographs were uploaded over two-years ago and are consequently of little concern to me. As an administrator, I would personally delete post-1956 images unilaterally and immediately by invoking CSD criterion - but that wouldn't be process (I'm not "rouge" ;-). Pre-1956 material is conceivably public domain for a variety of reasons. If only the copyright status could be definitively determined; principally whether they were produced by an "officer or servant of the Crown". Without appearing irate (and to reach the purpose of this message), would you consider refraining from notifying me that an image I have uploaded is being considered for deletion? That is unless you wish to issue a deletion request. ;-) Regardless of the messages, I commend your efforts as examining so many images must be rather tedious. Your talk page is very pretty. I hope I'm not doing anything wrong here.
The Liberation of Paris article is completely inappropriate. If you noticed from the talk section, a very aggressive French nationalist removed all all mention of US military units, itself grounds for the POV tag.
He also implies that the Anglo-Americans intended to colonize France with a military government. (It was merely a temporary measure of keeping order. A similar system briefly went into effect in Belgium and the Netherlands.) That's also POV.
By the way, I'm an expert on Middle East military history. A real one. (There aren't very many. I have hundreds of books. I once tried to write an article on the Siege of Jerusalem (1948). I gave up. The rage was too much for someone like me. It is the contention of Arabists that this siege never happened and that the 4,000 Jews who died in its various battles never existed because it would take attention away from Dier Yassin, which was a relatively tiny break-out attempt on a single day in which 100 Arabs were killed. So there can be no article on the Siege of Jerusalem (1948).
My point is, Wikipedia articles are often taken over by extremists with an agenda. POV tags fit when important information is missing (the US commanders and units) and it is edited with propaganda in mind. I'm restoring it. If you have a problem, let's arbitrate. I've added some snippets. Your article is (refreshingly for Wikipedia) tightly written so I had trouble working them in without changing the adjacent sentences. I have kept collateral damage to a minimum. Feel free to pull them around for flow or to discard them altogether. By the way, there's a grisly photograph of Smith in The Times (31 Jul 1922; pg. 12; Issue 43097; col A). Thank you for directing me to the article. Quite concise....I wouldn't be inclined to classify it as a stub requiring urgent attention or expansion. I am actually tempted to expand it once I've "completed" (hah!) the recurrent Liverpool Irish project, although as an archetypal Liverpudlian that would oblige me to refrain from informing my Scouse network of Shute's Conservative affiliation ;-). Judging from a cursory glance at GB and Wyrall's history of the King's Regiment, Shute appears to have been an interesting fellow. I'll certainly commit myself to researching the man soon. It was even more concise before I added the detail of his miltary career and even there the Gazette gives you very much the barebones of what happened, but I susepcted there was quite an intresting story behind that. The timing of his involvemtn with 1st Volunteer Battalion suggests an involvement in the Boer war as well doesn't it? However, it can still be quite piecemeal trying to get info from Gazette searches, the scanning and OCR process means that the indexing doesn't always work out as you might expect as characters get mistranscribed - there must, somewhere be entries for his initial commissioning, and his majority, but I came up blanks on those (and without knowing roughly when they happened it's hard to narrow down the search any other way. Apologies for the delay. Yeah, it's probable that Shute served in South Africa; the 1st Volunteers (5th King's) mobilised a contingent for "active service" in the Boer War. I'm personally unsure whether he accompanied his battalion to South Africa or even served in the war attached to another unit. His promotion to substantive Captain appears to have coincided with the deployment of that contingent. Intriguingly, there was an M.A. Shute who served in South Africa with a regular battalion while attached from the 5th King's (issue 27348)
What surprises me is the paucity of information pertaining to his early life as he evidently was a prominent business figure in Liverpool. There's a micro-biography located here and a copyrighted photograph of him here. Oh, and I agree that the Gazette's search facility can still be exceedingly frustrating. I once contacted the Gazette about the issues the original website contended with and received a reply reassuring me that character identification would be improved; i.e. apostrophes would be recognised :-D Shute received his DSO during the First World War; he was a major and second-in-command to John Maxwell McMaster until his succession when the latter apparently returned to England on leave in late 1915 (it's reasonable to assume that age was a factor). Hi. I can't find anything on John Jamelske's ethnic/religous background. "Torah" is just the jewish/hebrew name for the Old Testament, so technically it doesn't make a difference what faith he is. I've scoured the first volume of Wyrall's history (1914-1915) and found no mention. Unfortunately, Wyrall's history rarely mentions individual awards, and identifies officers by name usually only when they've become a casualty. I've been contemplating initiating a list of commanding officers and notable Kingsmen for an exceptionally long time. Listy, yes, and I'm sure WP:NOT could be invoked ;-). from the Gazettes it's rather difficult to work out what happened to him between 1916-18. He still seems to have been on the King's regimental list for a while, since he was given a regimental captaincy. Then there's a back-dated entry in a 1920 gazette giving him a second lieutenant's commission in the East Surreys from 1916. My best guess (rather originl research, but still), was that it was a it of a fiddle to get him a regular commission, rather than a territorial force commission. His medal card says he was 1/5th King's, but I don't think any of the gazettes spell that out. David Underdown (talk) 17:06, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
If only the collection of regimental material once stored at the Museum of the King's Regiment was as conveniently accessible as as it was when the MKR was a component of the original and now historical Museum of Liverpool Life. Oh yes, the intricacies of a contemporary officer's career can be confusing and disorientating without a substantive biography detailing the various appointments and promotions. I have a tendency to avoid that veritable minefield unless relevant and unambiguous information is available or the individual was considerate enough to publish an autobiography, such as the delightfully named Charles Harington Harington ;-). Indeed. To be candid, I was researching some of my relatives and yielded quite interesting information. But that's completely irrelevant ;-). The applicability of a war diary is debatable, IMO. Not because they constitute a primary source, as they would surely only be used to verify indisputable information likes dispositions and movements (and last time I gazed at WP:V, that was still acceptable), but because they've arguably been deprecated (in terms of writing an article) by regimental histories, et al. That has been my personal experience. Admittedly, the history of the King's Regiment and its associates have been exceptionally documented. SoLando (Talk) 18:10, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

We need to decide whether to go with larger regiments in the unit such as Maratha Light Infantry, Canadian Expeditionary Force or more specific such as battalions. My initial opinion is to stick with the larger units, as they will be blue links for the most part. I doubt many battalions will have red links, or will ever be converted into blue links. Specific battalions shouldn't necessarily be a problem, in that the vast majority had/have numerical designations. The main comments on his character are, ‘a spare, highly strung man, with a charming manner and remarkable clarity of vision’, and also the mention that he was deeply religious. I've noted from the original DNB article (as opposed to the current ODNB entry) and an initial delve in the Times archive that he seems to have been involved with Toc H after the war, which bears out the religous aspect. From the later Gazette entries, one of his honorary positions was Commandant of the Army Educational Corps, and he founded and was first president of the Army Sports Control Board whilst he was DCIGS, which bears out the educational aspects. I suspect he was very much a man of his time, stiff upper lip and all, and many deeply ingrained attitudes which do seem rather dated today. He was certainly no yes man, he disobeyed Lloyd-George's instruction to give the Turks an ultimatum over Chanak, probably costing himself the chance of becoming CIGS, but avoiding the strong possibility of naother major war. Times articles also show that he opened a number of war memorials, often in public schools, and again the DNB says he was involved in runign boys' clubs after his retirement from Gibraltar. His involvement in the committee of the MCC also shows him to be a man of his times in many ways. His sporting prowess throws an interesting sidelight on his character and background (from the ODNB), "During these early years, as later, he excelled at all games, especially cricket and hockey, possibly because hunting was beyond his means. When he was in his fifties he swam the Hellespont and back and in his sixties he was still playing high class cricket." So presumably he had no real private income, which still made him something of a rarity in those days so far as the British army was concerned (though William Robertson did manage to rise from private to field marshal and in the cavalry at that). Despite this possible social handicap, he seems to have been very popular around York when he was GOC Northern Command. On his contradictions, other Times articles include quotes about him calling Franco a "Friend of Britain", and as Governor of Gibraltar being quite accomodating to the German Navy when the German pocket battleship Deutschland was attacked by the Spanish republican air force. The parentheses was another attempt at clarification. Saying "the nickname was assigned to him" (or whatever the precise wording was) has grammatical issues since "him" could be taken to be Harrington (with a double-r) since he's been the subject of the sentence up to that point, so I changed the woring to Harington, but then thought the subtlety of the spelling might be overlooked, so to make it completely clear thought it should be pointed out. I've been thinking very hard about your comment on my talk page a week or so back. Assuming you still think it's good idea (and I really don't mind if you don't), I'd like to go for it. My concern so far is that I'm primarily a content editor, with a bit of dabbling in project organisation (Tag & Assess, for istance) and I wouldn't want that basic mix to change too much. However, I have done vandal-fighting and went through a spell of CSDing from NPP during lulls.
The other thing is to ask whether you fancy cooperating on List of Welsh Victoria Cross recipients to get it to featured list. The basics are there already so it's just adding loads of bells, whistles and references :)

I would encourage pursuit of adminship and would unhesitatingly endorse as a nominator/co-nominator/third nominator, etc. I suspect, however, that I'm not a particularly "glamourous" (!;-) broom handler. Becoming an administrator isn't as profound a change as some might be inclined to believe. Yes, you have access to the various privileges thereof and your status/image/reputation within the community can be fundamentally altered ;-). But unless you proactively pursue as a primary activity the most "demanding" responsibilities - conflict/dispute mediation/resolution, tendentious/disruptive users, et al - content editing, etc can still remain your primary focus. Countering vandalism and moderating new pages, closing AFDs, et al isn't so time consuming that it would be detrimental to your preferred method of contribution. That is unless, like me, you're still burdened with dial up. I hope that was coherent and helpful :-).

I wonder why is typing "poo" so popular among the vandal classes. I had a, um, run of "poos" a week or so back. It amazed me that they all seemed to think (if that's the right word to use) so much alike.

Thanks for clarification on Canadian Irish, have discovered that there was also a non-Canadian Leinster Regiment. Have also just added The Irish Regiment of Canada. See also Irish regiment. If I recall correctly, the Leinster Regiment did maintain a relationship to some degree with Canada (or its government), perpetuating the traditions of its predecessor which I believe was formed there. But I'm confident its personnel composition was predominantly Irish, augmented per convention by soldiers from England/Scotland/Wales. Google Books should, reliably as ever, yield the relevant information.

But until an available PD alternative is identified, that FU image is irreplacable in accordance with WP:FUP and therefore immune from being "botted" (a self-created word......I assume ;-). Hi there Joel, in answer to the first question, no. There is no formalised struture or review system. It is given out occasionally to articles such as James Milner which isn't FA standard, but it is better then GA. I think the project as a whole is going for FAs now. We do have a burgeoning list of Featured content. The Villa Featured Topic is almost done now, one history at FAC and about to have one at FLC. I would be happy to help with any Liverpool ones, it is my second club after all. With regards to Harington, good work, I have given it project banner tags on the talk page. The Footy project has been going through steady revamping for a while now. I revamped the main page a while back and there are several MoS's now in place and standardised navboxes etc. That and the featured content output is up incredibly in the last year.!! Cover up the truth? Wikipedia is indeed a website, but it isn't a vehicle for conspiracy/minority theory and personal opinion. What you consider truth can be, and is, perceived as minority theory (at a diplomatic minimum!). Policy is intrinsic to the project and each article is required to comply with the relevant content policies that I and others have directed you to on your talk page (WP:V, WP:NOR, WP:NPOV being the most pertinent, and apologies for the alphabet soup!) Prisonplanet is an inherently unreliable site maintained, I believe, by a man (Alex Jones) described by established sources as a "conspiracy theorist". Would you provide reliable evidence to disprove that? Or will that be rebuked with the defence: "But they're the establishment"? ;-) The site is in violation of policy and must not be used to support highly controversial, conspiratorial additions to articles on Wikipedia. Wikipedia isn't in the business of promoting any form of propaganda and providing undue, even undeserved, coverage to minority theories and viewpoints. That article does not not discuss anything since apartheid and as such isn't related to the Cape Police, part of the South African Forces during the Second Boer War. I'm off for two weeks over Easter and I have just realised that I have left an FLC open. List of Victoria Cross recipients of the Royal Navy is up and frankly, I don't think there should be many problems. The only one is whether to include ranks or not. The test is whether it answers questions that the general reader will pose. This means it covers, say in battle terms, who fought, where, when, how many on either side, and who won. In terms of articles on the Liverpool, paucity is the right word. I am having trouble trying to find anything. I have checked the times archive and found 3 articles. One you have listed, one I have added, the other one is virtually a duplicate of the first one. I searched the Times digital archive 1785-1985 for H.M.S [AND] Liverpool, HMS [AND] Liverpool, Liverpool [AND] Navy. Can you think of anything else? That is surprising! I had anticipated there'd be greater coverage, as Liverpool functioned as flagship at some stage in its deployment. Perhaps "Liverpool Cruiser", "Liverpool Mediterranean", and "Liverpool flagship". Can you verify that Liverpool transported Mountbatten to Yugoslavia in 1951? Absolutely! There isn't an established, recommended minimum size. So long as comprehensiveness is demonstratative and the article adheres to FA criterion, the length of HMS Cardiff shouldn't impair the prospect of promotion. WP:TROP has produced "small" FAs and an FA which I was the primary contributor to is of comparable size. Roger Davies and Woody were instrumental in its promotion (Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Issy Smith). If the availability of sources is limited and there are no omissions, glaring or otherwise, that can't be addressed because of a paucity of reliable sources, then the article would likely be judged to be comprehensive under those conditions. Hmmm that's interesting. Colledge indicates seven commissioned HMS Liverpools and another (the fourth) being ordered but later cancelled before being launched. I've altered the list page to indicate this, and since this is in keeping with the RN website I think we've cleared up the discrepancy. Does this look all right? Let me clarify your query about the Imaum (ex-Liverpool). The ship concerned was NOT an East Indiaman, but was built in 1826 at Bombay for His Highness the Imaum of Muscat, and was in his service named the Liverpool. In 1836 she was given as a present by the Imaum of Muscat to HM King William IV, who handed her over to the Royal Navy when she arrived at Portsmouth on 23 February 1836. As there was a Liverpool already in the RN, she was renamed HMS Imaum on entry into the RN. Thus the RN website is correct in saying that she was never called HMS Liverpool, but Jim Colledge is also correct in identifying her as "ex-Liverpool", since that was her name in the service (1826-1836) of Muscat. I recall that an FAC can be "restarted" by Raul654 (talk·contribs) or SandyGeorgia (talk·contribs) without being formally archived. I rarely frequent FACs (I never feel I have enough time to review an article to support or oppose) so if you're unsure just ask one of the aforementioned users. This ip belongs to a group of trolls/vandals which have engaged in a disruptive campaign racist and anti-semitic in nature. The ips (24.27.151.226 (talk·contribs), 65.30.76.58 (talk·contribs), 24.27.130.12 (talk·contribs), 65.27.38.203 (talk·contribs), 64.126.23.130 (talk·contribs) 64.126.34.118 (talk·contribs)) have all been blocked for 3 months because of disruption and harassment. They've repeatedly blanked their talk pages when blocked, regardless of whether they're blanking warnings, ip identification, or block notices. Thanks for the note, but I respectfully continue to find your deletion, and the reasoning behind it, unsupported by a rational reading of either the article or WP:NAMES (which is technically a redirect as things stand now, but I read the recommendation it pointed to thoroughly anyway, the first time you alluded to it in the edit summary).
Regina Spektor would not have become and American un-folk singer, or even an anglophone, had her family not been Jewish and she, Russian-born, Russian-resident, through her early childhood. Her entire output and life path both owe their course to her Jewish-Russian ethnicity no less than, to use your example, the African-American Collin Powell. Perhaps you don't realize this, but contemporary Russians don't emmigrate as a rule from Russia. Russian Jews do, however, and this is why they are disproportionally represented in the Russian diaspora in the USA and Israel, or more generally, in the world. This alone suffices to inject her ethnicity into the lead.
If you find the clarity of the article wanting on this score, kindly edit that to your satisfaction, but please don't obliterate it in the lead. To me, the article is clear enough. Two experienced editors, well-versed in the subject matter, already took issue with your removal of exact characterization quoted the title of this section/missive. Accordingly, I think you really have no basis for insisting on your edit. And, the Wikipedia guidance page you would have us study, calls itself just a recommendation, and is meant to help readability, not hinder it. I suggest that it is trumped in this case by another Wikipedia rule, that of applying common sense. Furthermore, I have already returned this text more than once to the lead, usually on account of vandalism, and I intend to see to it that it stays there, even if it takes a Request for Comment process, which, I think, would be gross overkill, because the issue is a no-brainer.
In sum, the article does state the circumstances of her family's emigration, the circumstance of her religious/ethnic-based upbringing and schooling, and anyone even remotely acquainted with the sources used in the article, let alone her music and statements she has made on record [sic], would immediately perceive that the lead-emphasized ethnicity of this notable person is central to her artistic output, and in that capacity, to her notablity. It wasn't incorrect, I fixed it! ;) Someone uploaded a copyvio on commons and replaced the image in the article. It was then swiftly deleted on commons and delinked from the article, leaving a nice hole, which I then replaced by reverting all the recent changes. Job done. Hope all is good. Hi, could you do me a favour, could you look at the history on the Lynx article please. Some guy keeps removing a fact tag I added to piece of text an IP added that says;
"A flight of either AAC or RM Lynx AH.7s are based at Basra Air Station under command of the Joint Helicopter Force (Iraq) on a rotational basis, but are restricted operationally during the Summer months due to the very high daytime temperatures which affect lifting capacity and endurance dramatically."

Hi! Yes, FA is, ideally, the ultimate objective. The article is tantalisingly close to....completion (although when is an article on Wikipedia ever so? :-). Perhaps it should have reached its current stage of development last year but my contributions (both content and administrative) have been very sporadic since 2008. Hey! Thanks for the heads-up. Quite a few publications often produced really bizarre variations of the regiment's actual title...even the regiment was unsure about its pre-1921 designation: whether it was "King's (Liverpoool Regiment) or King's (Liverpool) Regiment. Bah :-P. It seems more than likely that the illustration does indeed depict the King's. I honestly couldn't be less certain about its accuracy, however - not just the superficial discrepancies, which are understandable for an idealised portrayal of a 19th Century battle.
Still, it would be an awesome addition to the 8th Foot page as there's as much a scarcity of images as there are sources. Happy editing. SoLando (Talk) 20:10, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
Hi again SoLando. Its most likely to be the 8th Foot. The 4th King's Own were in Portsmouth in 1878 [19]. Harry Payne's original title for the painting doesn't include the name of the regiment [20], but if you look at the actual battle, the heights of Peiwar Kotal are in the centre of the battlefield and were stormed by the 8th Foot and the 5th Punjab Infantry [21]. Hopefully this helps even more because i reckon this painting would look great on the 8th Foot page, a very cool painting. Wish there was something like this for the Yorks and Lancs!
