Commons photos
Hi Valfontis, I've been working on categorizing photos related to the 2012 Pacific Northwest snowstorm on Commons, including your big batch of Mill Creek in Salem. Small issue: I don't know if all those photos should be in the creek category, since some of them appear not to be related it. But mostly, I just wanted to notify you because these are your photos. - They all show the aftermath of the flooding of Mill Creek over 2 days, including measures taken to prevent water damage to various state buildings, which to me means they are related. Most of the photos have high water in them. That water is Mill Creek overflowing its banks. Valfontis (talk) 16:43, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
Oregon State Capitol dome
Yes, I agree it is a lantern, rather than a cupola. I imagine that the word "dome" is used in other knowledgeable sources in an analogous sense, rather than a literal one, since the interior ceiling of the lantern is quite flat. I think it is very misleading to use the term "dome" without making this distinction clear to the reader, even if it is not made in other sources. I had changed it (crudely, and you were right to correct me there) because the use of the word "dome" to describe what is actually a cylinder led another editor to remove it from a list of capitols without domes (in the literal sense) here. Lord Nelson Roney
Not done
Hello, I started a page on Lord Nelson Roney and noticed that your sandbox page links there. If you have information about him and would like to collaborate, please feel free to edit or discuss. I left out some details on the page start. The Lane County Wiki on Roney mentions that he built almost 100 bridges, but I could not confirm this number in my other sources so I left it out. There is a paper on Lane County banks in the footnotes of a NRHP nomination form that I'm going to try and find when I get some time. Visitor7 (talk) 05:27, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
- Nice! I've got Style and Vernacular, I believe it has a brief bio on Roney in relation to his work on the Shelton-McMurphey House. I'll take a look tomorrow. Thanks for improving the coverage of the NRHP buildings in my hometown. I'll see what "S&V" has to say about them as well. Oh, and per the sandbox he is mentioned here having worked on the now revamped corner of Willamette and Broadway across from Center Court or whatever it's called now. conflict of interest
Valfontis: It's pretty odd that correcting details on the page devoted to myself, Richard Rhodes, Pulitzer-Prize-winning historian, should be flagged as "conflict of interest." Who knows better than I do if I did such and such, was born in such a place, etc.? You indicate you've put a hold on my changes, like some U.S. Senator blocking a judicial confirmation. Would you prefer I sent along the same information via a stranger? And when did Wikipedia, which I support financially among other ways, succumb to creeping paranoia? --Richard Rhodes71.198.226.46 (talk) 18:33, 16 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Richard, I just happened to notice there was a bit of promotional language in the article and did a little research into those changes. Since a user named "Rrhodes" had made those changes several years ago (2007), I thought I would follow up with a friendly message in case you were indeed the same person. If you look at the page history, which is here, you will see that the only real change I made to the information you added was to remove the "see Mr. Rhodes' website" message here, since that kind of 2nd person instruction doesn't belong in the body of an encyclopedia article. The message I left on your talk page doesn't mention there is a hold on any of your edits, so I am a bit confused. The message is actually a template with boilerplate language, and I see it does mention "Your recent contributions may have already been undone for this very reason" (emphasis mine), but as I said, I only removed the external link to your Webpage from the body of the text.
- The main reason we talk about COI here on Wikipedia is as a friendly reminder that one needs to exercise caution when editing an article about oneself. You can read more about that here. I know it seems rather silly and paranoid, but I hope you can understand why the community would have these sorts of concerns. The Wikipedia community gives these reminders to people no matter how famous or credible they are. Some people blatantly use the project as a vehicle for self-promotion so we like to mention that to anyone who is the subject of an article. Another concern, of course, is the very real possibility that someone posing as you could add incorrect information. See also our "notable person survival kit". I hope this explains that we really do have your best interests at heart.
