Hi

Thanks for welcoming me. I have one question: normally do I answer to new threads on my talk page or on the page of a person who wrote to me? In my home, Polish wiki it's the latter, but I noticed that here that the whole conversation seem to be on the same talk page. Thanks, Jasiekzar (talk) 08:02, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

Hi. I think the trend here on the English wiki is to keep all the threads on the same page, but it depends somewhat on the preferences of the the user. I like having it all on one page so I can better track the conversation. Some people put a notice on the top of their page on how they would like the threads to be answered. I also like using the {{talkback}} template to notify another user there is a reply, especially if she or he is not used to watching talk pages or isn't around a lot. WP:TALKPAGE has a lot more. I hope that helps! Valfontis (talk) 11:17, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for your help! Jasiekzar (talk) 11:39, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) To User:Jasiekzar, if you address your comment to another user, with their username in brackets as in [[User:Valfontis]], they will get an automatic notification that someone has mentioned them - so "talkback" is no longer necessary IMO. The automatic notification, which appears as a red number at the top of the person's page, will summon the other person to wherever the conversation is. --MelanieN (talk) 23:02, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
Nice to meet you MelanieN. ;-) Valfontis (talk) 23:10, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
You too, Valfontis. I came across your name because of your comment about the articles "Timeline of Foo". (There, Jasiekzar, see how that works? I knew Valfontis had posted a note to me here, because they cited my user name in brackets. That's also called "pinging" the person.) --MelanieN (talk) 23:20, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) When you want to mention someone but don't want to trigger the notification system. Use {{noping}} :) Jim Carter (talk) 06:33, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
We have the same in Polish wiki, but thanks MelanieN, I'll know I should use it here too. :) Jasiekzar (talk) 18:24, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
You're welcome. See, it worked! 0;-D --MelanieN (talk) 18:42, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

() OK everybody, shoo, go write an encyclopedia or something. Valfontis (talk) 18:47, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

re: welcome message

Hi Valfontis,

Thank you for your kind comment on the other page - and for the help link.

To be honest, I've read a fair few pages and used the wiki Article Wizard to create my article.

There are limits to how much one can read though, and an even smaller limit on how much one can read and actually digest.

For me, the easiest way to learn is by actually doing it and looking at specific articles close to what I am writing about, which is what I have done and why I am confused as to why there should be any problem with my article, particularly as to date no specific errors have actually been pointed out to me as to what is supposedly wrong with it. Lack of a response from the person who doesn't like my article and lack of specific details of what I've supposedly done wrong just makes me feel like someone maybe being difficult for the sake of it - otherwise surely they'd point out specifics rather than vague guidelines which don't really tell me anything.

Anyway, I do appreciate you trying to help. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Best,

Sarah PS I have read the yellow but am not posting an article link because it's about your comment to my comment not an article. SarahJamesorLeavesley (talk) 13:18, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi Sarah, I just noticed that Finngall hadn't welcomed you. It's not really a personal message, it's just a template: {{welcome}}. I don't really have an opinion on the speedy tag on Knives, Forks and Spoons Press--I'm sure Finngall will be along to reply to the note on his page soon but I know he is a busy person and we are all volunteers here. If you want to contest the speedy, you may remove the tag, but it's likely that Finngall will take the article to AFD. I'd spend more time reading up on Wikipedia policy and guidelines (click through the bluelinks and read them) and less time defending the article. You might also try asking for help here where there are people more available than Finngall seems to be at the moment. Good luck with the editing. Valfontis (talk) 13:42, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

Sam Baker

Thanks for the help on the Sam Baker (musician) article. I just added an Infobo and will try to add some additional content. Kmzundel (talk) 16:37, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

You're welcome. People can totally tell from my edits when I'm listening to NPR. I just did enough to make sure it didn't get deleted again. It would be nice to expand on his music as the bombing shouldn't be the focus of the article. I imagine No Depression has some stuff on him. Cheers, Valfontis (talk) 16:44, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
I figured you listened to NPR yesterday. :-) I was so pleased that Sam received some national attention. I had noticed months ago that his article could use some help....but I hestitate to take on more. I'm certain that No Depression has good stuff about him as well as many other sources. I'll see what I can do as time allows. *If* time allows.  :-) Kmzundel (talk) 17:23, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
His music was a good discovery. I figure if Terri likes him, then he ought be notable and other people would be looking for information on him as well! I'll check my back issues. I think they predate his career though. Valfontis (talk) 17:34, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
Sadly, the print version went away, but their online version has a good bit about Sam. Kmzundel (talk) 18:59, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

() Yes, it bummed me out. I like print. So yeah, he's not in the print archive. I found a good interview on the ND website and added a bit. I'm currently going down a rabbit hole of watching Townes Van Zandt videos, etc. but I'll try to come back to the Sam Baker article, I need to find out about going by "Dick Baker" in high school. Valfontis (talk) 19:05, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

Here's an article in the Wall Street Journal. [1]Also....I see that the image that I uploaded has been tagged for moving to Commons but I'm not sure how to do that. Any help would be appreciated. Kmzundel (talk) 19:24, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
I'm not great at image stuff...I think a bot comes along and does that? Or maybe one of my talk page stalkers... Valfontis (talk) 19:26, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
That's OK.  :-) This is the last I'll bug you today. (I think.) The Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange reviews two of his CDs:[2] Kmzundel (talk) 19:45, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

Talk:Kerby, Oregon

Why did you revert my edit/comment at Talk:Kerby, Oregon?? I didn't write anything obscene there, nor did I vandalize the page. — QuicksilverT @ 22:39, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

Per my edit summary ("please don't copyedit other people's posts") you changed other people's posts so I changed it back. But if you look closely at the page history, you will see I restored your new message after the reversion per the edit summary "restore new post". It's considered very rude to copy edit other people's posts, even if there are typos and misspellings. See WP:TPOC for more information. To summarize, it's OK to fix formatting on talk pages (spacing, indents, etc.) but don't correct spelling in other people's posts. I hope that explains. Valfontis (talk) 01:19, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Willamina, Oregon

The only reason I replaced the first photo is that we felt that the Timbertown USA photo better represented the beauty of our town - would you be willing to let me put the current photo further down in the body of the article? Thank you!

jacey31 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jacey31 (talkcontribs) 14:45, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

Jacey31, I have the impression your photo additions are a bit promotional, since they are from the owner of the hotel, and along with the text about the beauty of the town, etc., I'm not feeling really charitiable about this right now, sorry. (Please read about how Wikipedia is not a tourist guide for why we try not to "talk up" a place in an encyclopedia article.) And what you called a "stock photo" was by one of our longtime active WikiProject Oregon editors, so that was bit offputting. Also, it appears the Timbertown sign image is rather blurry. Why don't you go ask over at WikiProject Oregon for some third opinions about the page layout, or ask EncMstr what he thinks, I believe he talked to the hotel owner on her talk page previously? Valfontis (talk) 18:48, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
For a demonstration of how beautiful it is, perhaps a nice photo of the log yard at the mill as you come to town? It's spectacular! Aboutmovies (talk) 23:54, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
Hush now, AM. Valfontis (talk) 02:02, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

High Desert Discovery Scenic Byway

  • Thanks for weighing-in on High Desert Discovery Scenic Byway article. Aboutmovies is right about the Wiki-Road folks (at least one of them)…they want things their way. I’ve been carrying on one-on-one discussion with Imzadi1979 on his Talk Page; and it’s pretty clear routes must be addressed south-to-north even when their own rules say to follow the mile post progression and there’s video evidence that Discovery byway/OR 205 is numbered north-to-south. I would probably have re-written the article to comply with Wiki-Road’s rule if the mile posts went the other way. However, it bothers me when editor quote Wiki-Road rules and then ignore the same rule when my case turns out to be a bona fide exception. In any case, just want to thank you for restoring Wiki-Oregon assessment.--Orygun (talk) 19:42, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
    • No worries, I thought removing our rating was kind of absurd, so I spelled out my rationale. AM was rather more blunt, as is his wont, but he said the same thing. It's interesting I had a similar situation recently in which Imzadil reminded another editor about the jurisdiction of fellow WikiProjects. This is why I tend to stay away from road articles. Valfontis (talk) 19:52, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
      • Hey Orygun, I'd suggest you just ignore the epic "flounce" that just happened on the article's talk page. Valfontis (talk) 04:08, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
  • This has been an interesting experience. I like to submit articles I create for DYK spotlight...so they get some readership before they pass into the background. However, think Discover byway has caused enough trouble already, so I'll skip DYK process this time. Again, thanks for providing top-cover on this one.--Orygun (talk) 06:37, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
  • LOL. Happy Memorial Day. Valfontis (talk) 13:03, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

inattentive edits and reversions to Lewis & Clark Law School

Lewis & Clark Law School you reverted changes to the alumni section and it has incorrect citations for members of the legal community. The updated version that you reverted from correctly cited the difference between federal and state judges. With your revision, the federal judges are listed as "justices." That ought to get fixed. You also dropped several alumni that had been added. And can you explain the reason you removed the photos from several sections? The overall issue with your edits is that you reverted to inaccurate references that had been painstakingly changed and cited. If there were issues, then the site needed a surgical edit not a meat clever.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Lbcstud562 (talkcontribs) June 7, 2014‎

Hi there LBC, nice to meet you. I'm sorry you found my edits "inattentive". Do you know about the page history? You can read about page histories here: Help:Page history. That will show how my edits were explained in my edit summaries. You can read about edit summaries here: Help:Edit summaries. If you look at the history of the LC Law School page you can see my rationale for removing the images. (Also, if you click on what we call "diffs" you can compare the old and new versions of the article.) Basically, as far as I could tell, most of the images are in violation of copyright despite claiming on Commons that these images are your own work. If you can fix the licensing on Commons to prove you own the rights to those images, feel free to restore them. As far as the alumni section, be sure to read up on civility and assuming good faith. I realize that my reversion of the alumni section was probably not ideal, in that there were probably some missing entries and citations. I felt reversion would be less work than removing the headings and re-alphabetizing the more recent version of that section. I didn't have time go back through and fix it, sorry about that! Feel free to do so, and make the other edits you suggested above, remembering of course that on Wikipedia our standard for notability when listing people in alumni sections is that they already have a Wikipedia article. I hope that explains. Have a fantastic day! P.S. Don't forget to sign your posts with 4 tildes (~~~~). Valfontis (talk) 00:59, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
Lbcstud562, also review WP:UNIGUIDE, the guideline for university articles, which explains some of this. Aboutmovies (talk) 03:58, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Pride

You are invited! Wiki Loves Pride

You are invited to participate in Wiki Loves Pride, a global campaign to create and improve LGBT-related content at Wikipedia during the month of June, culminating with a multinational edit-a-thon on June 21. The project is being spearheaded by two organizers with roots in the Pacific Northwest. Meetups are being organized in some cities, or you can participate remotely. Wikimedia Commons will also be hosting an LGBT-related photo challenge.

In Portland, there are two ways to contribute. One is a photography campaign called "Pride PDX", for pictures related to LGBT culture and history. The Wiki Loves Pride edit-a-thon will be held on Saturday, June 21 from noon–4pm at Smith Memorial Student Union, Room 236 at Portland State University. Prior Wikipedia editing is not required; assistance will be available the day of the event. Attendees should bring their own laptops and cords.

Feel free to showcase your work here!

If you have any questions, please leave a message here. You can unsubscribe from future notifications for Oregon-related events and projects by removing your name from this list.

What is this?

Care to explain this edit? It says "This account may need to be blocked." I only edit Wikipedia under my name. Who is accusing me of being a sockpuppet? I have the right to know. Is it you? If so, kindly tell me where I am supposed to be editing under two names.

About Kevin Rose, his offer to buy back the house he purchased is bogus, which is why I reversed it. It was his duty to perform due diligence on his house -- to have it inspected for termites, structural damage, etc. before he bought it. Everybody who has purchased a house knows this. He obviously didn't have the house inspected before he bought it. You can't buy something, have buyer's remorse, and expect the seller to buy it back from you. You can do that with shoes, but not with houses. Rose's offer to buy back the house is just a ploy to fend off his would-be new neighbors.

More importantly, I really need to know why you think I'm a sockpuppet. I take this charge very seriously. You owe me an apology. Chisme (talk) 16:10, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi there, Chisme, how are you? Thank you for contacting me. See the old version of your page? Scroll down to the bottom of the page. By storing the {{sockpuppeteer}} template on your page, it put you into the Category:Wikipedia sockpuppeteers. Are you a sockpuppeteer? I didn't think so, so "substed" the template, that is I made it so it would render the code onto your page. Then I removed the category so you wouldn't be falsely placed in the category. A better way to store templates on your page is to put "tl|" inside them, like this: {{tl|sockpuppeteer}}. That way you have a copy of the template you can use to copy and paste. If you want the actual template to render fully on the page as it would look in use, then it should be "substed". I hope that explains. I won't address the Rose thing since you didn't link to the article. Normally I would delete posts that don't link to the article(s) in question (as per the "Read Me" note at the top of the page), but since your post is addressing multiple issues I chose to reply. So rather than owe you an apology (and I am truly sorry there was a misunderstanding) I think you should realize I was actually trying to help you. Have a great day! Valfontis (talk) 16:52, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
P.S. Chisme, I did explain what I was doing in the edit summaries, sorry if it was unclear. A sockpuppteer accusation would of course require I put a note on your talk page. Valfontis (talk) 16:55, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
No problema. Thanks for the explanation. Chisme (talk) 20:06, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

thanks for the leads!

Hi Valfontis, thanks a million for the links to flooded-out Oregon cities. Exactly what I needed. cheers! Finn-jd-john (talk) 17:20, 28 June 2014 (UTC)

Finn, just give in and buy a copy! Let me know if you run across any cool ones that need articles on here. Valfontis (talk) 18:29, 28 June 2014 (UTC)
