DYK that the phrase "7&6=thirteen" is a reminder of the geographic makeup of the early United States of America? When the United States came into being in 1776, there were seven states (NH, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, PA) north of the Mason-Dixon Line and six states (DL, MD, VA, NC, SC, GA) south of it. It is not, however, accurate to say that there were seven "free states" at the time, because many of the states north of the Mason-Dixon Line had slavery in 1776 as well. That's pretty technical AFTER the nomination has been made = so I asked for help.

Here are a few hints for improvements for nominating the article, that may need to be done -

1) Do not use the citation template. - ONLY use the exact reference words that cover the hook, NOT the citation template.

2) Instead use the wording that supports the hook - as that of 1 sentence line from pp. 142, 146-47, 460-6 of the Source book = something to the effect that it is a virtuoso piece of American carving.

3) Where is that reference in the article? Is it quoted in the Sources? As a potential reviewer I can not find where it is referenced in the article.

@Doug Coldwell:. Thanks, but I think the article's name should be reverted. I can think of a half-dozen other Modern Gothic cabinets by Pabst, including 3 in museums, and there are dozens by Kimbel and Cabus (although undistinguished). In 2015 the Met bought a famous cabinet by Talbert for close to half a mil,[2] although that would be categorized as Reformed Gothic.

Some things that make this cabinet special include its mammoth size -- 8 feet vs. 5 feet or less for the others; the virtuosity and variety of the carving; and its eye-popping polychromy. It's the gaudiest piece I know of by Pabst. Robert Edwards, who preferred Pabst's more subdued furniture, labeled it a circus wagon. Unfortunately that quote is now gone from his website or I'd have included it, and Edwards died in June 2014.

I'll take the references out of the lede and revert the name.

P.S. It's not the roof that relates to the banks. It's the brackets and massing.

Agreed (on both points). Earle's daughter, Florence Earle Coates, is of primary interest to me. I wish more was available on the whole family. Recent information that was presented to me on the Dangerfield case gave me the "notability" ingredient necessary to create Earle, Sr.'s article. I have read on a couple occasions of Earle's fiery speeches... would that they were available!

I don't know if you asked me before. I am not in opposition to it.

1. It looks like a lot of responsibility to me. I've thought about it, but to me it would be a commitment. I recognize it is a service to the Wikipedia project/community and I would not want to disappoint those who might entrust me with power, which should be exercised with restraint. And of course, there are volumes that I don't know about being an admin, so my areas would necessarily be circumscribed.
2. My interest has historically been content creation. With some wiki mopping on occasion. I have created articles that I knew about or caught my fancy. I have been involved (periodically) in article rescue, which is something I like to do.
3. I would guess that some will find nits to pick on any nomination. E.g., not enough AFD participation.
4. I am a mere WP:Wikignome.
5. And I have been cutting back on my edits and wikitime. It is an addiction.
6. I also think that after 100K edits it would be opening a Pandora's box for my critics. I don't want to be Joan of Arc on the pyre, even if I would be the guest of honor.

Some responses, respective to your bullets:

• That is a great perspective and one that will go down well at RfA. No-one enters RfA an expert in all admin areas. Humility is good. What we want is people who respect policy, know where to find it, and follow it. And restraint is much valued.
• RfA loves content creators. You're here to build the 'pedia. We're a bit odd. We don't like candidates who frequent the drama boards, but we do like a bit of a track record in some kinds of adminny areas (eg CSD / AfD) so we can see if you can follow policy
• See User:Dweller/Tips_for_aspiring_future_admins#Wikignomes
• There's no limit on the number of admins, so if you're not going to use the tools 1000 times a day, it's no loss to us if we give you the tools. You're not depriving someone else of them
• That is the biggest problem. RfA can be harsh. If you don't like what you're hearing, you can withdraw.

Thanks for your DYK help regarding Tajama Abraham. When looking at the options I chose BLP because, well, because it's a BLP, but I just now noticed that the BLP choice only applies if the BLP was unsourced. I just double checked and it did have one source when I started working on it.

However, it only had 57 words of text when I started working on it so I assume it easily meets the fivefold requirement. Should I change anything? (As an aside, I've reached out to her employer to see if I can arrange for a photo but don't know when or if that will happen.)--S Philbrick(Talk) 20:49, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

I think it was so minimally sourced that your edits are within the spirit of the rule, if not its letter. Without actually calculating it, my gut feeling was you were over the 5X expansion. Suggest you use the tools (particularly Earwig) to make sure there is no "close paraphrasing" or copy violation issues. The former rule can be a real trap for the unwary. Take a look at the DYK history of Bill Smith (fell runner). If you are not cognizant of it, the "close paraphrasing" accusation is really problematical. They don't just look at the words, but can look at the structure of sentences, paragraphs or the article. Very amorphous, almost no standard, and if they want to get you they can open up a never ending C.F. of messing with you. I am not saying that any of this applies to your article, but forewarned is forearmed. Another man trap is the standards for the hook. In addition to the length restriction, it is supposed to be interesting and supported by in line (and preferably on line) cited sources. Sometimes they want the literal words (in haec verba) to be in the citation. Of course, they are are there and in your hook, there is a possibility that somebody will say your hook is too close to the language. It helps to look at DYK, and the DYK talk page. Particularly the older nominations that get hung up forever, or the ones that are pulled from the DYK prep queue. See for example, Template:Did you know nominations/Animal husbandry. Damned if you do; damned if you don't. 'Hookiness' is a supposed virtue, but if it is too clever then they will say you've gone beyond the source. "Interesting" is in the eye of the beholder It is no wonder that a lot of editors shy away from DYK. I did for years, even as I crated a bunch of articles that were worthy at the time. There is also a contrary school of thought that the best sources are those that are off line. Using books that are not in google books means that the reviewer may have to take your word for it, WP:AGF. Another way to get into this is to look at the work of some of the most productive DYKer. Thanks for the advice from both if you. It will be truly embarrassing if I end up getting dinged for a close paraphrase, as I spend the first hour of every day doing copyright review at Copypatrol. For Doug, typically use a sandbox when I'm working on a red link. See for example, User:Sphilbrick/sandbox_Brittany_Hunter which has a long way to go, but I haven't tended to use a sandbox when expanding an existing article. The DYK wasn't the initial impetus. I started going through List of Women's National Basketball Association players, adding historical statistics and cleaning up references. As I was going through, I saw some articles that look like they can use little expansion so you get to the end I started over and decided to expand some articles if possible. When I got to Tajama Abraham, my initial intention was to clean up some of the references, but the more I read about her the more I thought it ought to be developed into a proper article. When I read about her hiding out in a commercial refrigerator from Hugo, I thought that sounded like a decent hook (many of the hooks are a bit strained, this one seemed very natural), so I decided to nominate for DYK. I see that the procedures have changed since last time I did one. This seems generally for the better, asking for the supporting citation, but the instructions are still a little confusing for someone who's not a regular in that area.

I'll probably simply return to modest additions to existing articles, but if I see a very short article that could use a significant expansion of consider doing it first in a sandbox.--S Philbrick(Talk) 14:01, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

It turns out that over an 11 year period of producing articles that 98% became a DYK. I always had the hook FIRST and then made the article. All these books are just a fraction of the books I have used in research. My main source for finding a good potential DYK article was Famous First Facts. Congrats on such a high ratio. One of the nice things about contributing to Wikipedia is that one can have different motivations or interest and still find plenty to do. Some people are interested in high-quality pros and just about any subject, some are happy with more mundane pros but have particular subject areas of interest, some delight in cleaning up exceedingly tiny grammatical issues and it all works. My particular interest is in women's basketball, for which there are many red links and many stub or start articles, so I can work on getting basic information in while leaving GA or FA to others. I'm not familiar with that book although it sounds quite interesting, and obviously well-suited to DYK. Can see the table of contents but can't quite see the subject index, so I don't know whether there's an easy way to search for women's basketball. I do see that it has the first basketball game played video women's college but I've written about that. If there are any others, and you'd like someone to collaborate with, let me know. Hello, I wanted to tell you that UAA prefers that an inappropriate username either be reported or discussed with the user, but not both at the same time. I think they care less when one person tries to discuss it(as I did) and a different one reports it, as that person might not have seen the talk page first, but if the reporter discusses it with the user and makes a report, they usually hold off for a few days to see if the discussion goes anywhere. SS Andaste

I have begun working on the SS Andaste article, and expect to continue with a description of the vessel's final sailing and disappearance. The article will do better with an upgrade, but I would not expect the upgrade to elicit the dramatic praise from the Wikipedia community that was enjoyed by the SS Clifton article. Rediscovery of the Clifton's hull generated many additional data points relevant to that boat's loss, but the hull of the Andaste has not yet been found. If improvements are made over a number of days exceeding 7, the size of the article grows and it is then 'chasing pots of gold at the end of the rainbow.' I have made various additions to the article. Based on the article's "History" page, these additions meet (in terms of size and time) the broad parameters of the 5X/7-day requirement you have mentioned. However: (a) there may well be additional parameters that I do not know about, and (b) I have helped to write several other DYK articles and do not have an intense desire that this become one. My underlying goals were to pay tribute to the lost ship's company, and to develop an online presence for the lost vessel in case its hull is found soon with the help of modern technology. The vessel was a comparatively humble one, but its loss was important because the incident occurred right at the dawn of portable non-spark-gap radio machinery. Prior to the late 1920s, pre-portable radio sets were big, heavy, and required full-time personnel, so it is no wonder that shipowners refused to pay for them. I was able to uncover the text of a Michigan historical marker that provides some standing for the assertion that the loss of the Andaste helped to force the Coast Guard and the owners of Great Lakes commercial ships into better caretaking of their seamen on the Great Lakes. One possible "hook" could be Earl Zietlow, the 14-year-old first-time seaman who perished aboard the doomed vessel. Andaste in 1923

Something to look into with the Andaste article: Devendorf says she was converted to a self-unloaded in 1923, and a sand dredger ("sandsucker") in 1925. But Brehm, Jerlekci, Van Der Linden, and other sources indicate a 1923 date for this. It appears to have been a two-part conversion, begun in 1923 and used in 1923 and 1924, and then completed in 1925. Dredging equipment was added in 1925. I'd suggest that Boyer seems to have conflated the two. Perhaps it's better to not use the Boyer source so much at that point in the article, and use some of these others to flesh out what really happened in 1923 and 1925. There is nothing to stop you from rewriting the article, being careful of course to avoid the minefields already trod. You can ask an administrator for a copy of hhe article as it appeared. Get it. Rewrite it in your sandbox, and then let me look at the draft. I will then give you my opinion as to whether it is 'ready for prime time' to be moved to the main space.

If you are talking about challenging the deletion via some sort of appeal, I have no advice I want to share at this time.

reverting that edit

I must confess I don't see the reasons for reverting that edit/tag. The outline of the article doesn't demonstrate any notability, except of "hey, we were the first" and "damn, watch it, we're awesome." In my opinion, shameless self-advertising, and not much of encyclopaedic nature (if yes, the relevant content could be extracted into one or at most two sentences, but still, definitely not enough to merit its own page.)

Quinyu We've been through this before on that very page, Shelby Gem Factory. IMO, you are wrong. And serial WP:PROD won't change the outcome. The article at the time of the nomination was half of what it is today. Gem manufacturing is not as common as jewelry manufacturing; and the article recognizes that the technology is being licensed elsewhere. The tags you entered concerning WP:Notability and WP:Advertising are against WP:Consensus. WP:Not paper. Knock yourself out. Sounds like a judicial ethics violation, i.e., a judicial endorsement of the firm.

Create a separate section for notable partners or something to that effect.

I think your list of awards in separate items is overblown and overly promotional. Turn it into a paragraph. See Dykema Gossett, Miller Canfield and Warner Norcross & Judd.

Ordinarily, I prefer to use a separate list of sources and the WP:SFN I also think that as a matter of style that i prefer last name first, followed by first name. I find that it is easiest if I use the WP:Citation templates uniformly. So I try to work within the citation templates, but choose knowledgably from them. I would note that you were using "publisher" when it should have been "newspaper" or "work". Those produce italics for titles. location is usually the place where the publisher is located. I have sometimes used it, however, as the "dateline" from news stories. That is controversial, and I think many would disagree. These are some of the finer and more esoteric points of using templates. I am kind of well known for this kind of work. It's not that hard, but it takes some study and application to figure it out. Dmitryeremeev Fodors suggests either is correct. Chateau is of French derivation. Castle is English mainly (late Old English: from Anglo-Norman French and Old Northern French castel, from Latin castellum, diminutive of castrum ‘fort.’). In the U.S. the latter is more commonly used, I think. There is also the matter of interpretation (not just translation) from the local language and dialect, and I would say asking a locally-based interpreter who knew the place would be a good start. Advice on recently deleted article?

Saw you are part of the Article Rescue Squadron and wondered if you might be able to offer advice and or help. I'm an inexperienced editor who wrote a few articles in 2014 (I'm a professor and wanted to understand wikipedia better and be able to help my students with it). Two of my articles were created, but one was deleted today (Ty Morse) after a discussion that hinged on whether or not the subject was actually notable, which did not seem to reach consensus. Jemima1418 See and read thoroughly WP:Deletion. Ask a friendly WP:Administrator for a copy of the deleted article. Then improve it with WP:RS references that answer to question WP:Notability and WP:GNG pose. You might also be able to appeal the decision (it sounds like there may not have been a WP:Consensus. Without knowing anything about the article, my instinct would be to add sources from books, newspapers, scholarly articles, and the web. Use Google books, Google scholar, Bing.com, Highbeam research, etc. As a professor you've got better sources than I do. Hope that helps. If you need more detailed instruction, email me. appeals can be tough. There was a hard line display in the discussion, and I don't know why. Intuitively, I would guess that the passage of time will cause the sharpness to wear down.

My user page

Hi! Regarding my user page, thank you for telling me that I can do whatever I want on my user page. It says on WP:User pages that you can add personal information about yourself if desired. I want to add some off-Wiki interests that I have on my user page.

For example, some TV shows that I am a fan of that I want to add to my userpage are: Most Shocking, Chopped, Chopped Junior, SpongeBob SquarePants, iCarly, Food Network Star, Food Network Star Kids, Kids Baking Championship, and Worst Cooks in America.

I also want to add some singers and bands that I am a fan of on my user page as part of my off-Wiki interests. Some singers and bands that I am a fan of are: Kidz Bop, Luke Bryan, Darius Rucker, Carrie Underwood, The Chainsmokers, and Taylor Swift.

I also want to add some more things about myself on my user page. I want to add that I have autism, I am the oldest child in my family, I love singing, I watch videos and listen to music on YouTube every day, and I want to add that I attend church regularly.

Some political issues I oppose are Black Lives Matter, abortion, illegal immigration to the United States, and United States national anthem protests (2016-ongoing).

Some sports teams I am a fan of are the Colorado Rockies, the Denver Broncos, the Colorado Rapids, the Colorado Avalanche, and the Denver Nuggets.

I also want to create userboxes that say that I am a junior in high school, I attend public school, and I want to properly make the userbox with the age that I am, and how long I was on Wikipedia for.

I want to add all of these as userboxes on my user page. How can I add these as userboxes, and where I can get these? I really don't know where to find them. Most of the user boxes I used i borrowed from someone else. The two I created were the Leonberger and the Lincoln LS boxes.

This user is a Lincoln LS owner.

This user is owned by a Leonberger.

As to those I found someone else's user box, clicked on edit (without saving) them, and emulated their formatting. I did that so long ago that I don't remember how I did it.

If you wander around user pages you will find a vast choice of user boxes.

We edit in an environment where we encounter and interact with editors from all over the world. But it's a matter of style and it is entirely up to you.
