my bad summary on Bend, Oregon

Somehow popups behaved unexpectedly and put your username after the "vandal" tag in the edit summary for Bend, Oregon which I just reverted, which is so wrong in so many ways. If there were a way to remove that text I would have already done it. I deeply regret and apologize for the error. —EncMstr 01:11, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Bobby Eaton GA Review

I've done a lot of updating to the Bobby Eaton article and I think I'm done. I've addressed all the specific issues you've mentioned, tried to update according to WP:MOS and put some work into making it less "wrestling-centric" by explaining terms and not using too many different terms about the same thing. I hope it's enough, I'm stumped as to what else to update, so if you could please look at it again and give me your honest opinion on the article's current state. Thanks MPJ-DK 08:51, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Alright I've given it a break, read it through and I'm not seeing anything else that jumps out at me - no more edits coming from me so if you could please give it your final read through to either pass or fail it. Thanks for all your input so far it's made it a lot better already and I've tried to complie a list of things to do before I put another article up for GA. MPJ-DK 11:50, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for all your help. I'm going to study your edits to help me improve my English skills (since English isn't my native tongue) then I'm probably going to let the article sit a few days before I re-read it a final time and try to resubmit it. You've been a great help. MPJ-DK 01:23, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Yeah I saw--looks good. Damn, but those FA folks are more hardcore copyeditors than me! (I figure I need to leave enough of other people's wording alone that they don't hate me!) I think it will pass, as it seems the only objections so far are are about the syntax, which you have dealt with. And yeah, I think the "while" is fine there. Good luck! Katr67 18:35, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Oh. I see there's lots of "whiles"... Hmm. Some of them might need to be changed just to avoid repetitive phrasing. If I get time later I may do some wordsmithing after all. I'm watching the review now so I'll know if I need to. Don't shoot me, I'm only the copy editor... Katr67 18:44, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Portland WikiWednesday

Hi Aboutmovies, for some reason I've assumed that you're living near Portland. Is this so? I'm trying to organize a get-together next week for WikiWednesday. Interested? -- llywrch 04:17, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

I know the feeling: the only reason my wife doesn't complain is that she spends as much time playing arcade-style games on her computer as I do on Wikipedia. But your wife is welcome to join us. -- llywrch 17:31, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Mary Ramsey Wood

The age claimed here is far outside the documented ages for the time period. Are you a relative? If you'd like to re-write history, I'd expect you to produce actual documentation. Newspapers and family folklore is only enough to count as a longevity claim. Note the U.S. record is currently age 119 (see Sarah Knauss).Ryoung122 05:53, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Mary Ramsey Wood
No, I'm not a relative. Please check the sources listed, and if you notice there is a picture of the headstone. Then take a moment to read WP:ASG, and learn how to check sources. Aboutmovies 18:36, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
Quit being such a smartass. ASSUMING that I don't know how to 'check for sources' is NOT WP:ASG. Perhaps you need to read it again.Ryoung122 19:12, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
P.S. I assumed 'naivete', not malice. However, you have reacted emotionally and not logically. The FACTS of the matter are:
--not all tombstone dates are correct
--the date of the tombstone reflects what people BELIEVED IN 1908.
Yes, the tombstone is offered as evidence that I am not try to "to re-write history" as you claimed. Aboutmovies 23:47, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
--like stratigraphy, age validation concerns a person's age throughout the life course. We find that in 1880, Mary Wood was '69' and in 1860, she was '30.' Clearly, there is a pattern of changing the story. Also, unless you've read this book you really shouldn't be commenting. Scientists estimate the chances of living to 120 as 10 billion to 1. So, should we really 'assume good faith' or should we 'assume that Person X knows about Oregon but has crossed into another field of expertise'?Ryoung122 19:17, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
1) I and every editor on Wikipedia can edit/comment on any topic we want. Two, the headstone was not offered as proof of her age, but to demonstrate (along with the four reliable sources in the article) that I am not trying to "re-write history" as you say. And family folklore? Where did that come from. If you want to get anywhere on Wikipedia, you might want to be less aggressive. For instance you could have done something like this: Hello, I see you recently started article XXX. I see it is sourced properly, however age claims such as this are often incorrect. Do you have any additional sources that help verify the age claimed? Otherwise I will research the claim and publish my findings in a scientific journal so they can be added alongside the information given in the article. Thank you for your time. How you come across is uncivil, and as I have told you (and others too) that it is in violation of WP:ASG. Not to mention you problems with WP:OR. And please, please, please take the time to read Wikipedia:How to edit a page and the entire WP:MOS so you can format things properly. And don't forget to use ":" to indent on talk pages so people can follow your arguments. Aboutmovies 15:45, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Because of your concern, I have changed J. C. Campbell to start class. That was a bad assessment by me. Hi Aboutmovies. You are off to such a great start on the article Oregon Judicial Department that it may qualify to appear on Wikipedia's Main Page under the Did you know... section. The Main Page gets about 4,000,000 hits per day and appearing on the Main Page may help bring publicity and assistance to the article. However, there is a five day from article creation window for Did you know... nominations. Before five days pass from the date the article was created and if you haven't already done so, please consider nominating the article to appear on the Main Page by posting a nomination at Did you know suggestions. If you do nominate the article for DYK, please cross out the article name on the "Good" articles proposed by bot list. Image source problem with Image:ORJudgeWaldo.jpg

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:ORJudgeWaldo.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:46, 11 August 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr 20:46, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

The Fort Astoria site is listed as a National Historic Landmark in the National Historic Landmarks Program. See this list of National Historic Landmarks in Oregon and the detail about the site.

From the National Historic Landmarks detail, it sounds like there's only a city park on the site, but no re-creation of the fort that was there. Still, the site itself is most likely listed as a landmark because of its importance in the history of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 22:03, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

COTW

Hey, great work mobilizing the troops on the Collaborations of the Week. I was thinking it might be a good idea to have a notice on the top of the WP:OR page and maybe even a notice on the article's talk page just so people who happen by might notice it. I've seen that in a couple of places.

May I make a COTW request? No? Too bad, I will anyway. How about our current Congressional delegation? The one with the weakest article right now is Darlene Hooley. The other four are not great either and all over the map in terms of content, but hers is clearly the one in the need of most attention. Maybe if we get some editors on that one, the other four articles would fall into place in terms of how the article should look. Anyway, just a thought.

--Sprkee 23:11, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Hello. I noticed you put a {{PD-USGov}} tag on the image because it appears on a federal government website, but please notice that not all pictures on government websites were created by federal government employees. In particular, the copyright page for the bioguide Congress source says: "Not all images are in the public domain; some images may be protected by the U.S. Copyright Law (Title 17, U.S.C.). Do not duplicate without permission from copyright holder. Copyright information is provided whenever possile, but it is ultimately the responsibility of the user to determine and satisfy the copyright and other restrictions." [1]. nadav (talk) 05:57, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

My apologies, I see that the tag was already there. I'm replacing the potential deletion template with the proper one. nadav (talk) 06:02, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
Continue reading the copyright notice from bioguide:

"Unless otherwise noted, images of Representatives are provided by, and should be credited to Collection of U.S. House of Representatives. Images of Senators are provided by, and should be credited to the U.S. Senate Historical Office." Emphasis added.

So, in the instance of the picture you are trying to delete, there is no "otherwise noted" which means it is provided by the U.S. Senate Historical Office, which is a US Federal Gov entity. "Otherwise" noted looks like this where it puts the copyright info below the picture. Aboutmovies 15:20, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Article on Ronald D. Mehl

Hi Aboutmovies,

I'm a new Wikipedia editor and am confused about the notability issue on this article. One jounalistic reference is the Christian News Northwest article (included in links); the Benediction prayer to open a session of the US Senate as guest Chaplain was indicative of his notability (not sure that any other Oregonians have performed that duty recently); the dedication of the gymnasium at Life Pacific College; an award winning author in Christian literature, including a book used as the theme for the National Day of Prayer; and the info from International Foursquare identifying Ron as one of the prominent pastors that helped turn attendance around for the denomination as a whole (article link on current history of Foursquare). He is referenced in at least 3 other Wikipedia articles of which I am aware. I also researched other Pastors in Wikipedia, including J. Vernon McGee and Jack Hayford, which I believe are in the same category as Pastor Mehl. Believe me I'm not trying to be 'cantakerous' but am confused as to how to better address this. Is it a style issue since I didn't specifically reference the above info and just included in the links? Thanks for listening, I'm definitely hoping you can help me.JWLang 05:12, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

Legal expertise needed

Hi there, I just created a stub for United States v. Oregon, summarizing the case that acknowledged fishing rights for native Americans. But after doing so, I realized there are other cases by the same name, specifically a couple from 1935 listed on this page: List of United States Supreme Court cases, volume 295

Not knowing anything about the naming conventions of SC cases, I'm not sure how to proceed. Can you offer any insight?

By the way- I'm sorry I haven't participated in your collaborations yet, which I think are great idea. I've been very busy off-wiki. But I'll try to jump in soon! -Pete 03:23, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks much for sorting through that! (And thanks to Katr too - since I'm sure you'll catch it here, and I'm runnin out the door…) -Pete 05:26, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

As you probably noticed, I started my gnomical work on Mr. McNary. I learned a bit about those Breyman girls--they sure did get around. I was thinking of mentioning that Jessie's sister Minnie married Rueben P. Boise, Jr., but maybe that's too off topic? One of these days the Breyman Bros. ought to have an article; they were real movers and shakers of their day. Oh, and I'm trying to figure out if McNary, Oregon had anything to do with this branch of the McNarys. I think not, but I haven't decided for sure. More tomorrow. Katr67 04:55, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

All done, as far as I can tell. Katr67 18:07, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, did you feel anything more was needed for GA? If so I'll see if I can dig anything up. Thanks again. Aboutmovies 18:10, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
It seemed like a couple things were unclear (like the two separate terms thing, despite it looking like he served continually from 1917 to whenever, which I took out of the lead) but my brain is also unclear so I'll take another look after lunch. I'm also dying to know what the heck the Salem Fruit Union was. Katr67 19:08, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
I'll see about expanding upon the two seperate stints. As to the SFU, my guess was a trade group, maybe even a distant predecessor to NorPac. Aboutmovies 19:15, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
The clarification is good--I clarified it a bit further. I think it's just about ready to let the GA folk have at it. The things I see that could be expanded upon besides the fruit thing (BTW, the Salem History source says he was an orchardist (of filberts)) are the fact that he had to buy back his family's house (why did they lose it in the first place?) and I read that he ran out of money and that's why he had to leave Stanford--that's a good rags-to-riches sort of angle. In some places the dates are a little out of sequence--mostly the personal stuff--I think it makes sense that way, but it might be a quibble for the GA folks. You also might clarify the difference between public and political office in the beginning of the Politics section. (public vs. elected maybe?) Finally, I've got to wonder why he was in Florida when he died. For FA, go into a lot more detail about his Senate career--he was there forever, so there's lots of material. (Of Mark Hatifield: "He became the longest-serving U.S. senator from Oregon in 1993, surpassing the previous record set by Charles McNary." [2]) I read somewhere (I forget where, sorry) that he was considered the most important (influential/powerful/???) Senator out of Oregon in the first half of the 20th Century. I ran across this today too: "However, those who have served in the Senate are surely most proud of him as the man who stopped Franklin Delano Roosevelt from packing the Supreme Court in 1937. Since the Court was preventing him from enacting certain New Deal programs, FDR (with the aid of his legislative pointman, Senator Robinson) declared that he was going to appoint six new members to the bench who would tip the judicial scales in his direction. The Constitution dictates that the number of Justices be nine, and Roosevelt's action was thus clearly illegal. More central to the issue, however, is the fact that the powers of confirmation for any presidential appointee, including Supreme Court Justices, is an express privilege of the Senate. McNary's efforts to stop this unconstitutional action was a classic example of a check on Executive Branch, and more significantly a triumphant reinforcement of Senate authority."[3] good stuff. Good luck! Katr67 21:54, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
P.S. It's interesting to note that the Willkie-McNary ticket didn't carry Oregon... Katr67 21:57, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

Congratulations, almost! Katr67 01:30, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

I'm missed the above earlier. Now that it is GA I'll see what can be added. Though the long quote seems dubious since here they don't talk about McNary at all and it is perfectly Constitutional for Congress to change the number of seats (its been done on numerous occasions). But congrats to you too! Aboutmovies 02:04, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Stinkin' badges

I'm too lazy to do DYKs (though I did nominate Vortex I for one) but I was wondering to which GAs you felt I've contributed significantly. If Scientizzle ever talks me into going for adminship, well, they look at stuff like that. Way back when, when I did an editor review, I'd innocently put a little FA star by New Carissa on my brag list because I'd helped copy edit it when it was up for FA review. Well, someone said that could be seen as taking undeserved credit for something and that the folks a Rfa would freak out about that. ::shrug:: So do you think I've earned any of those nifty green boxes? Don't worry, you won't hurt my feelings if you underrate copy editing like everybody else does. ;) BTW, OSC is steadily moving up the proofreading request list so I bet it gets done pretty soon. We should GA nom it after that. Katr67 04:34, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

At this point I would say Waller Hall, Katherine Ann Power, and Willamette University College of Law. On each of those you expended a fair amount of time in both copyediting and some review/additions. At least those from what I've been involved with, I don't know if you worked on others. Good to hear about OSC. I know you've worked on McNary, let me know when you are done so we can nom that too. Aboutmovies 04:55, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

I'm crap at coords if I can't copy them from PSU/USPS. Do you think you could improve ones for Eugene Depot? They're currently off to the right somewhere, unlike Eugene itself... Katr67 16:21, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Done. The easiest way to get them is to use WikiMapia. Zoom in, put the white + that shows the center of the map on the location, then the URL will show the exact coordinates. If you then need to convert to 45'34"4 W, search for the coordinates at Google Map and it will display both in a callout box. Someday I'll mention that we should have coordinates where ever possible, since then the locations will show up in Google Earth, which gives more exposure to the articles, and hopefully more minons participants. Aboutmovies 17:26, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the info. Yeah, it's pretty cool to be looking around Google earth and see the dots that mark articles that I've we've written. Where are all those darn minions, anyway? Maybe we need to elect one of us Evil Overlord and they would materialize... Katr67 17:53, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

I have a feeling you're fixing to write an article on him. I've got two related photos uploaded to commons Image:Parrish.JPG and Image:ParrishHouse.JPG. Please improve them as you see fit, it's hard to tell how they really look with my crappy monitor. Katr67 16:42, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I'm going to try and get Sam Parker and Parrish knocked out today/tomorrow. Thanks for the pics, I'll see what fits, with a link to any that don't. I think I have a free portrait of both too. Aboutmovies 17:21, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Thomas Milton Gatch

Hello. I've nominated the Thomas Milton Gatch article, which you created, to appear on the DYK column of the Main Page. You may see the hook at Template talk:Did you know#Articles created on September 13, where you may improve it, if you wish. I think it may even be GA material... :-) Keep up the good work! Oregon DYK userboxes

I just stumbled upon your user page and saw your Oregon related DYK contribs userboxes. At first I thought it was just a mistake that there were dupes but then I saw there was no param for the number of contribs... are you using 2 boxes just to work around limitations in the template? If not, I think the userbox should only appear once. Cheers, Jeremyb 04:07, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Pics

Got a few of Smelt Sands State Recreation Site, and the North Fork of the Yachats Bridge and Fisher School Bridge (both NRHP), also found a geocache by accident, so I got a couple pics of that, just for fun. Katr67 19:06, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Good. No frogs? Anyway, looks like you'll be busy with those red links for awhile. Back to Parrish. Aboutmovies 19:33, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
We considered going to one of those kitschy beach shops and snapping a photo of some plastic frog and saying it was a frog we spotted in Oregon, but we didn't spend much time in civilization. I did get a plastic snake from the geocache, but he's striped, not spotted. Katr67 19:58, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge

Do you think the stub tag can come off Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge? It seems like it is beyond WP:STUB status. —EncMstr 02:51, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Yah, its a solid start now. In the future, if you plan on a DYK I'd leave the stub tags off until after it passes. Some of those in charge at DYK go by the tag instead of what the article actually is. But great job, it looks like with your 2, Sprkee (or Spanish Sprkee), and mine Oregon will be dominating DYK this week. Aboutmovies 02:56, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

I'll look into Erastus. The Beers gravestone has the look of being erected long after his death, probably by the DAR, similar to the marker of George Gay near Hopewell. The Lees' stones are similar (I'll upload them onto commons in a few minutes)--you can see where the original ones were broken off. Beers, Parrish and the Lees are all together in the absurdly named "Diamond Square" section of the cemetery. The DAR might not have known what they were talking about. Yet another reason not to join. (I actually qualify.) I also would have no idea how to act at a cotillion... I'll see if I can find out anything. About Beers, not cotillions. Katr67 03:23, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Columbia Sportswear: Chairwoman

I apologize, I cited the wrong link in my edit.

Below is an excerpt of 'One Tough Mother' by Gert Boyle herself from Google Books (page 157). It highlights her dislike for the term 'chairwoman' and serves as the company 'chairman'.

http://books.google.com/books?id=QIE1VOXlrhwC&pg=PA157&vq=chairwoman&dq=gert+boyle&sig=MeXWdVUskeJbYOq8xN_r-UJq2Ak

Please consider revising the article based upon this.

Mattfblue 04:45, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

If the article was Gert Boyle, no problem. But the article is the company, and the company says chairwoman. If she was so against the title she could have her web people change the site, afterall she is in charge, thus there seems to be implicit approval of chairwoman in that instance. But the company's 10Q financial statement says chairman. So it seems the company doesn't even know. How about we go with the gender netrual "chairperson" until Gert fires the web people for getting it wrong? Aboutmovies 06:34, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Congrats. Another 15 minutes of fame for one of our old dead guys. Hey you know how to contest a copyright tag, correct? Can you point me to the relevant guideline? I ran across this Image:Frederick Weyerhaeuser.jpg and I kinda have my doubts about the attribution. Katr67 23:24, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
We're doing good this month for WPOR. For copyvio, see the Instructions part here, and use the one for images. I'd be sure to note that it is doubtful a new image was created for someone who has been dead for almost 100 years. Aboutmovies 20:21, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

any chance you could photo shop that photo a little to lighten it up some. I think I would help it a lot. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rvannatta (talkcontribs) 03:30, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

ps. lightning up the shadows and mid tones and adding some color saturation makes it a very dramatic photo---likely simlar to what you saw..... I downloaded it and gently cooked it, but can't figure out the license approach to reupload it to show you.Rvannatta 04:10, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Your revised version now closely tracks what I did. No point in uploading mine---you did a good tweek on it. Digital cameras seem to have a lot of trouble making landscapes too dark.Rvannatta 06:46, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
