Western Asia project

There is now a proposed project for Western Asia, including Qatar, at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals#Western Asia. I noted that you were a member of the Qatar project which has since been seemingly abandoned. The purpose of this proposed project is to provide coverage for all the countries of the region who do not currently have projects, as well as to potentially create subprojects for countries which do not have them. If you are interested, please feel free to indicate as much there. Badbilltucker 15:57, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Now set up, with upmerged templates. I've populated it on the basis of categorisation in the last db dump: catting should have improved somewhat since then, we should see what comes out in the wash next dump, whenever that happens. Alai 02:47, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Subregions of Iran

There isn't any administrative layer between the central government and the provinces. It's better to divide that category to province-based subcategories. Jahangard 00:36, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Well, I don't see any point in puting that 60-article threshold for the stub categories (when they are meaningfull subcategorization of a bigger category). However, after the discussion over template:Tajikistan-bio-stub, I prefer not to be involved directly in discussions related to the stub-sorting project. Jahangard 03:06, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

image categories

Hi, some time ago, you created a number of categories for images and maps, which seem rather redundant to the purpose of WP:Commons. Was there any discussion about those back then, or is it ok to replace them with links to the respective commons categories? --Latebird 13:26, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

  • I looked around and I can't find them - can you link me so I can comment appropriately? Aelfthrytha 12:58, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

You can filter your edit history for categories to find the following:

User:Electionworld has created a few more subcategories for historical maps (but switched to supporting the Commons:Atlas since). Many of them are completely empty. Most of the images listed in the others should be moved to Commons (or have already been moved). You also created some local pages for Commons based images with the sole purpose of listing them in those categories. All of this looks like a lot of parallel work, promising to turn into a maintenance nightmare sooner or later. Interestingly, the same question has been repeatedly raised here, but was never properly addressed as far as I can tell. --Latebird 13:57, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

{{Indonesia-geo-stub}} split consultation

Already put this on Alai's talkpage, but he hasn't gotten back to me yet so I figured I'd as you as well. I've already taken care of creating the majority of the stub templates and subcats - I have five categories for the five major islands or groups of islands, and I"m down to the last one, which poses a problem. Maluku Islands and New Guinea are grouped together. What would you name the category? Also, there are the last two stub templates, for West Papua and Papua - can you think of templates for them that would avoid conflicts with anything in Papua New Guinea? Aelfthrytha 02:36, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

I honestly don't know enough about Indonesia's goegraphy to be able to help much, though i suspect that Papua is not only likely to cause confusion, but is also possibly a politically charged term. I can think of three possibilities, though: 1) we could stick with the old name of Irian Jaya, which covers the whole area. 2) We could Papua Barat, which is the Indonesian name for West Papua, to solve at least one of the problems, 3) PapuaIO-geo-stub and WestPapuaIO-geo-stub. As to what to do with it and the Maluku Islands, why not two separate categories, one for the Malukus and one for NG? Grutness...wha? 01:31, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Sorry for the slow response, was away for the past week. On the category, what about simply Category:Maluku Islands and New Guinea geography stubs? (Hey, no one ever said they had to be original names...) Or at a push, Category:Eastern Indonesia geography stubs. For the Papuan templates, I think the clearest thing is to leave "-Indonesia-" in the name by way of a hierarchical element -- {{WestPapua-Indonesia-geo-stub}}. An alternative would be to use a 2LA, per G's suggestion of "IO", but I'm not a fan of this in this case: the country's TLD is different (.id), it doesn't even feature on the IO disambig, other than via Indonesian Airlines, and in ISO 3166-1 alpha-2, it designates British Indian Ocean Territory. So ID would be better, but IMO still less than obvious. Alai 12:56, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Hello there, thanks for replying, and sorry I didn’t get to look at this earlier. If I may be frank, I think you are over-reacting just a little to this consultation issue. All we asked was that the process be explained and its benefits. Given the extent of work, I don’t think this is an unreasonable request, nor is it by any means 'opposition'. It’s just about working with, and talking to people - no big deal. One can’t expect to make huge changes and not have a request to explain/discuss. Thus, I think remarks such as these are completely unnecessary. Sure, it may not have occurred to you that there was a wiki project Indonesia that may take an interest, but once you were told, just talk. I don't know why you think we so 'voraciously' unreasonable. Merbabu 02:01, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Wow - you guys have got a big job with Indonesia stubs. Let us know if you have any questions. kind regards Merbabu 00:46, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

I just started flipping through the Maluku/Papua category but realised I should hold off til your done. But they looked fine. So, it means you come to a page, read about it and try and work out where it is? that's some job. Merbabu 00:51, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
regarding your suggested 'trick' to start with a province and its list of stubs/articles, which provinces have you done? All of them? I see Central Java and Maluku/Papua may have been done already. I might do bit. Merbabu 03:06, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Well, it looks very good. There are likely to be some boundary issues (excuse the pun) but they are very minor in comparison to the benefits. Also, there are still 127 pages on this list. Is that the one you were working off? Some are a bit tricky - i can look thru it. Merbabu 03:39, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

PS, there are also maybe a few Indonesia-wide articles that could still carry the 'Indonesia-stub' tag, right? eg Greater Sunda Islands. Merbabu 03:41, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
OK, as for that list of arts. with no province stated, SS & I can probably work those out. eg, Mount Lawu. Merbabu 03:50, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Ummm

Hi, there is an Indonesia project - and it does try to get a handle on things - but when something like this very odd geo split comes in - it would be appreciated if you could at least let us know what you are doing? We are quite territorial due to various invasion attempts by other projects. What is important is that you have created something which can have impact on the project - and which - in all courtesy should be explained a the project noticeboard. If Grutness (bless his kiwi socks) is note sure of indonesian geography - are you? And as for Yogya stubs - there simply are not enough. SatuSuro 02:46, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

If it is not obvious - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Indonesia-related_topics_notice_board - I do hope I am not too abrupt or demanding in the above talk item - I seem to be getting misinterpreted a lot this am - the indonesia project has few active editors and a huge range - and we really do need to talk more often to cope with something like a change in stubs - not trying to undo your obvious good and hard work - more a case of 'can we see the big picture please?' SatuSuro 03:10, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Yikes your user page makes me hungry. Could we post what you posted to me at the noticeboard? I think there is at least one other ed on at the moment who is equally as strong on the geo stuff as I tend to be ..sigh SatuSuro 03:29, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
As you develop further splits or create template - could you please leave the latest list at the noticeboard please? It would be appreciated - did you know there used to be a music group in Melbourne (I think it was) called 'My friend the chocolate cake' ? SatuSuro 03:34, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

As long it is not a problem - then any of the lower edit level editors if they have it on their watch - can see what has happened - and we have it for the record. thanks SatuSuro 03:40, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Now me mate merbabu wants it all on hold - is there an item in the wp stub sorting page where this started from? SatuSuro 03:43, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

before the event, not after

Please see my comments on the wikiproject indonesia board. It is my very strong suggestion that you stop this work until you have explained and obtained broad consensus with the project's members. it may be that your work is most worthwhile - but how would we know? Merbabu 04:04, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

No where did i mention 'opposition' - in fact i clearly use the words 'may be worthwhile'. Rather, I am after an explanation of rationale, advantages, etc. This is quite clear on the project page and shoudl be fundamental to such major changes to so many articles. ie, collaboration. Please use the project page for further discussion. thanks Merbabu 04:13, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
And another bewildering issue is - the stub appears to be a java stub when on the page - and on the main category there is cjava - there is no identifying which is what on the actual tag on the stub as to whether it is central or west or east SatuSuro 04:07, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

I am taking it to the project page - my apologies SatuSuro 04:17, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Apologies - my misreading of the category title and the variant regional stub variants. sorry SatuSuro 05:12, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

I am really sorry I have bothered you folks on this - for me (from my perspective as a project tagger on article taalk pages) I get very nervous when Indonesian project stubs get looked at as we have so many to improve! SatuSuro 03:00, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Well sometimes we have about 5 or so active editors who will pipe in (at maximum) but this time - only three of us - the other two are otherwise disposed - so as long as you havent given up in disgust at my verbiage (sorry about clogging your talk page and other places) it would be much appreciated if you are able to do it - and normally i dont tag templates - but if you dont mind i think i will so that this weekend. I am looking forward to see my watch list being flooded with your updates - thanks. SatuSuro 03:12, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Brilliant

It has been absolutely great - have been able to tag arts that I hadnt found yet - and also get a handle on how many of the arts I had either tagged or otherwise memorised. Dont ever let anyone get you into the conversation on wiki or off about how many islands are there in Indonesia - its a trap. We have had project conversations about it - but lets just say considering what you are covering will give you a handle of the fact that we have a few - :0 thanks again (off to brunch in tokyo time zone :) SatuSuro 02:29, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Rowspan

Before a section in a template you can add colspan="x" or rowspan="x". Rowspan will stretch a section downward the amount of sections you type. I added rowspan="2"| before the image so that the image would span over the title of the template and the list of sums. Let me know if this helps. Thanks, Tim Q. Wells 03:58, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

I just put <br> before the link that does not appear on the image and the links after it will appear on the bottom line. Tim Q. Wells 04:08, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

Request to protect Ancient Yemen history article

Hey, We have a serious Anti-Arab spamming problem in the Ancient history of Yemen. Its done by a very presistent Yom Afrocentric, mainly denying the Arab past of Yemen (Qahtan) and instead starting the history of Yemen with African culture additions (putting it as the first section of Ancient History of Yemen). The Yom is simply taking advantage of the Yemeni absence from the internet (due to Qat) to create a Yemeni wiki project made up by his sock puppet accounts and its very hard to have even basic nformation about the Arab past of Yemen in the article Ancient history of Yemen. I know you are busy, but please give sme though becase the Arabness of Yemen touches the Whole history of the Arabs

A glimpse of Yom AntiArab Agenda: Just because we don't have evidence of a non-Semitic language there doesn't mean one never existed. We don't haev any evidence of a non-Niger-Congo language existing in Gambia, but there must have been some, since we are rather certain that Niger-Congo languages did not originate there. Similarly, we know that Afro-Asiatic did not originate in Yemen, so there must have been some language spoken there (which cannot have been Semitic, a sub-group of Afro-Asiatic) before the spread of that language family to Yemen. Evidence of absence is not absence of evidence. As for Yemen being Arab, that it is (although the Mahra and related groups might not be considered so by all), but this does not mean that we have evidence of Qahtanites in Yemen! The talk page.--Skatewalk 10:06, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

i was really interested by the different Persian Dynasties lately, and have created over 10 maps, that i personally admire, for the Persian Dynasties, but i dont really know where to post them for this group... or is there a Persian Project on Wikipedia??

Controversial Geographical Designation

You designated Colegio Arji as a Central American school. I am changing it back for now. Most people in that part of Mexico do not consider any part of Mexico to be part of Central America. Mexico is part of North America. Central America, while sometimes defined as including the Southern part of Mexico, is not usually defined as including any part of Mexico. TeamX 05:35, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Ratings?

I'm a bit confused by the standard for ratings on the Central Asia WikiProject. We have very important articles (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Mongol Empire, etc.) rated only as high, but then have top-rated articles such as the Afsharid dynasty and the Battle of Gaugamela. What's your take on this? Otebig 01:26, 10 October 2007 (UTC)
