Cutting down watchlist

I have cut down my watchlist by about 4000 items so that I can concentrate on the articles that I am really interrested in, and not get sidetracked too much. - I am also quite busy in real life at the moment so my contributions will be rather erratic.

Happy editing everybody -- Agathoclea 15:01, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

My RFA

Hello Agathoclea/Archive 2, I just wanted to thank you for giving your comments at my recent RFA. While it didnt pass (I withdrew after it became apparent that the RFA was "sinking like the titanic" =]), I will try to focus on and build upon your comments, and the comments of all the other Wikipedians who participated. Thanks again for voicing your opinion, and I wish you very happy editing! Anonymous Dissident Utter 06:23, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Merging 2 articles together

I started a voting section in the merge discussion on Talk:Germany national football team#Merge over a week ago. It clear that people want to have the 2 articles merged with 7 votes for merging and none against. When can we have this done. Kingjeff 16:46, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

Thank you for fixing my glitch re: blocking e-mail from Cyrus XIII - I would have done it myself, but I was asleep. As for my rationale for blocking him in the first place, I've already gone over this in great detail on many other talk pages; I don't feel like rehashing it again, so if you're bored enough, you can look through my most recent contribs for today. Cheers for correcting my balls up of a block, I was positive that Manny had added that block message herself, but obviously I screwed up. I offered her my humblest appologies so hopefully there's no hard feelings there. Thanks again, Ryan Postlethwaite 18:29, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi danke for your help. I can easy tag the German villages when I start them -save you the effort - I did a few I think. I would like to see the standard German info box on every muncipality in Germany - I am ery surpised ina project of this enormity it hasn't been done yet. WikiProject Project Banners

I've noticed that you, at one time, were interested in a proposal for a wikiproject called WikiProject Banners. I've expanded on the idea in my wikiproject proposal, and was wondering if you would like to check it out. The proposal can be found here. I hope this would be something you would be interested in! Thanks for keeping an eye on this article. I fail to understand the animosity that this article has generated. I wish that the critics would simply write a criticism paragraph than simply slagging off everyone. I appreciate your help. Gillyweed 23:03, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi! I just wanted to draw your attention to something that looks like you might have abandoned a while back (User:Agathoclea/WHEEL WAR... ON WHEELS!. You still have the Category:Wikipedia essays tag on it and it's showing up on the cat listing. I'm not one to mess about with other's userspace too much - do you think you could remove the category tag or finish the essay? CredoFromStart talk 18:46, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

For some reason, this is a redirect now for TSV 1860 Munich. This was nothing more then a spoof page and should be deleted per the request that is in the history of the article. Kingjeff 18:18, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

WP:GER

Thanks for your note. There has been a lot going on for me over the last few months, and it's not going to stop any time soon. I'll probably remain active on some German articles, but mostly within the scope of WP:WPFC. But if there's any way I can continue to help out with templates, that's no problem - it just won't go as quickly as before. What did you have in mind? - 52 Pickup 13:42, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

That entry is cleaned up now. The creation of English names for all the parameters is something that I still plan to do - unfortunately, the code is complicated enough as it is with only one set of names, so it will take a lot of time to get it done right without breaking the template. - 52 Pickup 08:22, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

I would prefer if you would bring that up on a more open forum like WP:AN/I to get an unbiased admin to look at it. I personal view is that NPA is more used in respects to a specific contributer. If specific contributers feel themselves attacked by that they should go to AN/I as well. Agathoclea 07:16, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Saxony-Anhalt

Indeed a lot of work ahead there! I'm not sure what to do with Dessau, Roßlau, Bitterfeld and Wolfen, since the merger cities Dessau-Roßlau and Bitterfeld-Wolfen, and the "old" cities would all deserve separate articles IMO (as in de:). See for instance Sittard-Geleen, a recent combination of Sittard, Geleen and Born (Netherlands). The Statistisches Landesamt Sachsen-Anhalt link is very useful indeed, there are alphabetical lists of municipalities by Kreis and by Verwaltungsgemeinschaft under Gebietsinformationen/Gemeinden. If you need some help, I'll jump in after I'm done with Hesse. Markussep Talk 11:06, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

German Location infobox

Hi there. Just a quick request regarding the insertion of Infobox German Location. Upon adding the infobox to the article, please also remove any {{coord}} templates that may be present, as well as any "Category: {towns/municipalities/etc) in (state)" placements that you see. Both of these things are now incorporated into the infobox and so this duplication of information is no loner required. Thanks. - 52 Pickup 08:23, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

thanks for the confirmation, there was a little edit-scirmish on the subject a couple weeks back. Agathoclea 11:25, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
Really? Where did this happen? Earlier there were some problems with the coord template, so displaying the co-ordinates in the title bar via the infobox has only been enabled during the last week. The auto-categorisation has been part of the template for a month or so - and as there have been no clear problems with how it works, the relevant manual categories can now be phased out. - 52 Pickup 11:47, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
You can find the incident from this, but I haven't noticed anything since. Agathoclea 11:50, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Llandudno Wiki

I would like to know what right you have to constantly keep removing links from the Llandudno Wiki pages, in particular reference to the non-profit Llandudno Enthusiast Groups Forum at www.llandudno-forum.co.uk this site has over several thousand articles relating to Llandudno with designated sections where people can reminisce, ask a local or carry out research on Llandudno this is certainly an education and encyclopedic free source of information. This is well within the keeping of Wiki criteria. The link is removed over other links such as profitable businesses and organisations such as North Wales Theatre. I really think you should stop knit picking or keep out of that topic all together. I would be be quite happy to talk about the issue before you decide to remove the link again if you wish to argue your case forward. I have added some more relevant links to the Wiki page, so as you can see, my interests are not simply in that of promoting my own cause.

Munich S-Bahn

This message is regarding your removal of my HTML comment at Munich S-Bahn. You asked me to see the German interwiki for the reason. Why can't you just put the reason in English on the English Wikipedia article?? Georgia guy 17:34, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Verifyable sources is one reason - although I can vouch for the German article to be correct on mentioning that S3 was replaced by S8 (And later briefly resurrected on a different track) it would need researching. Lack of time and lack of access to German off-line sources is a bit of hindrance. Agathoclea 20:33, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

First apologies, no matter how many windows I open I loose my cut and paste. Second, you have commented, something close to "please do not copyright others' stuff as your own" [3]I am not arguing with you. [4]This is in regard to a GIF Power and Control over Women Wheel [5] As an early NOW member I can hazard a guess at which two people contributed most to this "document", I can not prove it though. [6] This document Power and Control Wheel" was intentionally created as propaganda and directed into the public domain with no claim to authorship or copyright: further it is my understanding that was purposely done. [7] Again I do not seek malicious argument, and I bear you no malice at all. [8] The Power and Control Wheel exists, and is very widely circulated, without copyright or claim to authorship. [9] The GIF is my creation (only way to get into the computer [and done so faithfully]) I apparently have a license problem. I have read your remarks and disagree to the extent that I created the GIF and yet agree with your remarks becuase I did not solely create the contents. I truly am unsure of a best manner to deal with this. I very much desire to retain the piece as it amplifies the describtive piece, here at en.wikipedia "Power and Control". Should you be able to assist me in any way I would very much appreciate the help. auf weidersehen BobV01 17:22, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

I have deleted the template due to misrepresenting policy. Songs and albums are not listed in speedy deletion criterion; while albums made by blatantly non-notable bands could be speedily deleted under the criterion (on the grounds that an article about an album can be considered an article about the band that made it), mere lack of assertion of notability of the album itself is not sufficient. Little England

I'm wondering if you can advise me. The neutrality dispute on Little England beyond Wales is deadlocked: no progress is being made to improve the article's neutrality, other than my own attempts, which mostly get reverted. How does one get a dispute like this arbitrated? There is much that can be done to improve the article, but it's impossible in the current climate. I'm aware that I've been too close to this article, and I'd quite like to stand back and let someone else sort it out. If an arbitrator would only say what exactly is wrong with the article, it would be quite useful, as I'm totally in the dark about that at the moment. . . .LinguisticDemographer 23:27, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Munich U- & S-Bahn articles

Yes, I noticed some of the wrong categories (like Munich S-Bahn) and have been trying to rectify that. Sorry for any inconvenience, that was mostly carelessness on my part. As for the naming conventions: Per Deutsche Bahn, the correct naming would be München <station name>, like München Hauptbahnhof, München Ost, München Marienplatz, München Karlsplatz etc., all of which are already named that way (not by me. ;-)) I was - sometimes rather inexpertly, I admit - trying to adjust the new names according to the majority of article names already present and according to official Deutsche Bahn naming conventions. (Although DB itself is obviously not consistent in its naming of stations, at least not in files I've been able to access. However, every (inter)national train station in Munich is - on the platforms - named München <station>, though, so I'd think that to be authoritative.)

I can see why you are adding reqphoto=yes to WP Germany template, but why are you removing Germany's name from the reqphoto template below? Categories German places

Hi Agathoclea,

I noticed in some cases that the infobox as copied from de: didn't contain the "Art" field even though it was a town/Stadt. I corrected the ones I noticed, but probably I missed several. And there are still many places in both a "municipalities" and a "towns" category. I think the best way to fix this is to compare the "towns in X" categories with a list of towns from de:, like de:Liste der Städte in Deutschland, or the bold names in de:Liste der Städte und Gemeinden in Baden-Württemberg etc. for the states that have been completed (Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saarland, Hesse). Unfortunately, there are no lists of towns by state, or categories of towns by state in de:. It's not my highest priority, though. One complicating thing is also that there are several places in the "towns" categories that aren't independent municipalities or towns (e.g. Rheydt, Obermarsberg, Nassau, Saxony). They should go to a "villages" or "boroughs" category, but I don't think there's been a decision on that yet. Maybe "localities in X", "quarters in X" or "municipal subdivisions in X". Markussep Talk 12:33, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Note that now and then, a municipality is elevated to town, see de:Liste deutscher Stadtgründungen/21. Jahrhundert. For Bavaria, this only applies to Stadtbergen, I changed it in the Stadtbergen article. Apart from that, your list should be OK. Markussep Talk 14:25, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

i have written and article and had it deleted twice---odd ball reasons were given and no consideration to me. I am curious why a general article about a martial art is deleted every time i write it. there is genuine crap located on wiki but not deleted---first it was advertising---no advertising according to your guideleines was present, 2nd it was because of the size--too small----the article was about 7oo words--i was working on more when the deletion occurred---what do i have to do to get an article writtin on Wiki---this is a public encyclopedia--right?

deletion question

Dear Agathoclea, it would be nice of you if you explain the reason for deletion you made

23:01, 9 December 2007 Agathoclea (Talk | contribs) deleted "OGOGO" ‎ (Expired PROD, concern was: Importance of subject not established)

I'll appreciate yur response..

thank you very much..

Armatist (talk) 02:54, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

The reason is quite simple. Per WP:PROD you can tag a page for deletion and it will get deleted if no-one contests it within I think 7 or 10 days. What went wrong is that Indrian (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log) who placed the PROD on the article missed out on informing you of the impending deletion.
Have a read of Wikipedia:Notability an if you think the subject of the article is fitting our notability criteria than I can restore the article for further scrutiny of the masses. Agathoclea (talk) 07:28, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Re: OGOGO deletion question

Dear Agathoclea,

I understand that you have thorough knowledge of the art of avant-garde music, but the OGOGO IS the major force of that music art genre on the American West Coast and influenced number of musicians in Europe and Japan in the last 19 years.

Plus, two of my articles here pointing at OGOGO which you deleted w/o respect and understanding of their contribution to the art of music.

Your response "The reason is quite simple" only means that it's simple for you to delete and doesn't justify that action.

Riana's request for bureaucratship

Dear Agathoclea, thank you for taking part in my RfB. As you may know, it was not passed by bureaucrats.
I would, however, like to thank you for taking the time to voice your support, despite concerns cited by the opposition. Although RfA/B isn't really about a person, but more about the community, I was deeply touched and honoured by the outpouring of support and interest in the discussion. I can only hope that you don't feel your opinion was not considered enough - bureaucrats have to give everyone's thoughts weight.
I also hope that the results of this RfB lead to some change in the way we approach RfBs, and some thought about whether long-entrenched standards are a good thing in our growing and increasingly heterogenous community.
I remain eager to serve you as an administrator and as an editor. If at any point you see something problematic in my actions, please do not hesitate to call me out. ~ Riana 12:09, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Tenby Davies

Dear Agathoclea

I see you’ve just reverted my changes Tenby Davies/Frederick Charles Davies and I wondered why? I hope I haven’t broken any rule? As the original creator of these pages, and as a relatively new user, I thought it would be alright if I swapped things around as I felt this worked better. Perhaps you could tell me why you don’t think I should have done this?

Regards Lepidus Magnus (talk) 13:20, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Dear Agathoclea

As you haven’t got back to me yet, and as I have to go home now, I thought I’d just send you this before the weekend. I think I might know why you reverted my move of Tenby Davies/Frederick Charles Davies – was it because I forgot to swap the project banner as well? I really do think things would be better off under Tenby Davies with Frederick Charles Davies as a redirect, so I’m going to swap them over again. If you think there’s some reason why I can’t do this, I’d really appreciate it if you’d let me know rather than simply reverting things. As I said, I’m a relatively new user, so I’m still finding my feet.

Regards Lepidus Magnus (talk) 15:47, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Dear Agathoclea

I’m really sorry about this, but it seems you placed your message only seconds after mine to you, and consequently I went ahead and carried out the swap before getting yours. I now see that you’ve changed things around for me, which I really appreciate. Apologies if I’ve upset the apple cart a little today, but I am grateful to you for your help in resolving things – it’s so easy to put a foot wrong here without realising! Thanks again.

Hi - could I ask you to leave this alone for a few minutes please - I'm just trying to sort it out. Thanks. —  Tivedshambo  (t/c) 14:03, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Oh gawd! What has happened here, all I was trying to do was correct a mistake I made when I first created a entry for him. It seems that the correct spelling of his name is without the capital 'D'. I did leave notes on all the discussion pages to this effect, but my attempts to put in redirects etc. have all been reverted. Hope someone can help! Lepidus Magnus (talk) 14:09, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Question?

Dear Agathoclea

As you and Tivedshambo seem to be keeping a watchful eye on me, I wondered if one of you could help me with a little question I have. I’d like to know if there’s any way of hiding the qualifiers you use to distinguish different entries with similar titles, i.e. Tom Macdonald (writer). If not, do you think you could ask someone at Wikipedia if it might be possible to create some kind of command text, such as ‘Title: hide qualifier’, that would do this? Obviously I appreciate the importance of these qualifiers, but I personally think that the overall appearance of pages would be enhanced if they did not actually appear in the entry heading. All of this may well have been mooted elsewhere of course, but as a relatively new user I thought I would just ask.

Regards

Lepidus Magnus (talk) 11:40, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Dear Agathoclea

Sorry it’s taken me a while to reply to the note you left on my talk page in response to my query about hiding the qualifiers in entry titles. What I was wondering was if you can actually hide the qualifier in the heading of the entry itself. You know at the very top of a page it has the title of the entry in bold, above where it says ‘From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia’, i.e Tom Macdonald (writer). I just think it would be good from a presentation point of view if you could encode the entry itself with something which would actually hide the qualifier so in the heading it only shows the name of the subject without the qualifier. I was thinking something like {Title: hide qualifier}? Any thoughts on how this could be done?

Pen-y-garn/Skanda Vale

Dear Agathoclea

On the Pen-y-garn disambiguation page I see you’ve changed the entry for Pen-y-garn, Carmarthenshire to ‘Pen-y-garn a hamlet now known as Skanda Vale in Llanpumsaint, Carmarthenshire, Wales’. The only thing is I think this Pen-y-garn was originally a farm, and the hamlet of Pen-y-garn is actually located near Llanfynydd at SN5731.

I did find the following on the internet ‘The application site is located on the holding of 'Pen y Garn' which together with an adjoining farm 'Cwm Creigiau Fawr' forms a single holding known as Skanda Vale.’ Maybe it might be better to restore the original ‘Pen-y-garn, Carmarthenshire - a hamlet in Carmarthenshire, Wales’, but to also add something about the Pen-y-garn that became Skanda Vale? I’ll leave it up to you.

Regards Lepidus Magnus (talk) 10:15, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

I am still pondering on that. That Pen y garn does not exist anymore and is now the site of the temple itself and the larger area is now known as Skanda Vale. I was trying to find more details for that disambiguation. Normally disambiguation pages should only contain redlinks if an article about the subject is very likely. If an article is not likely it should have a bluelink to the closest article. Agathoclea (talk) 13:12, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
I changed it to: Pen-y-garn a former hamlet in Llanpumsaint, Carmarthenshire, Wales, now part of the area known as Skanda Vale to make it more excact. Agathoclea (talk) 13:15, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
Rereading your original comment and I noticed that you speak about more Penygarns - same principle applies. Find the closest village and bluelink there. Agathoclea (talk) 13:18, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Dear Agathoclea

There seems to be a bit of confusion here. There are/were at least two places called Pen-y-garn in Carmarthenshire. One is a hamlet at SN5731, whilst the other is merely a former farm that is now part of Skanda Vale at grid reference SN419320. The Skanda Vale Pen-y-garn is not the same as the hamlet of Pen-y-garn.

I trust you don’t mind but I have had a go at changing things to reflect this. I was not aware that you could only include ‘redlinks if an article about the subject is very likely’, so will not restore the link for Pen-y-garn, Carmarthenshire – but there again you never know someone might just have a lot to say about the place!

Your "edit war" accusation

You have accused me of edit warring on Cultural depictions of Julius Caesar. If you look at the edit history, you will see that an anonymous editor, who has history of only editing this one article, and of only making destructive edits, has been repeatedly removing valid content. He/she is not prepared to discuss, simply to declare that the material should be removed, and only after he/she has removed it. His/her deletions have now expanded from the fake quote section to the ancient and medieval sections. I have done my best to maintain the article with no support whatever from other editors - the only other reversion of this anonymous user's vandalism (and I stand by that description) has come from a bot. If you are watching the article, then give the constructive editor a hand. --Nicknack009 (talk) 11:21, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

OK, I've thought about this for a while, and I give up, and just have to know... how do you know about the oversighted edits? The only thing I can think of is that you were originally involved in some incident with them. Otherwise, you wouldn't even know to ask someone who could know. If this is top secret or something, OK. But if not, the curiousity is killing me. --barneca (talk) 21:33, 6 May 2008 (UTC) sigh. nevermind, I'm an idiot. --barneca (talk) 21:34, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

I figured it was something like that about 2 seconds after hitting send on the message above. I was operating under the unconscious assumption that old edits would have been oversighted a long time ago, and it occured to me too late that it could have been a relatively recent thing. Anyway, thanks for the info. --barneca (talk) 22:29, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

special watchlist

Hi - I've been looking for a way to have a super watchlist for a subset of the too many articles I now have on mine - and I saw your note at the Village pump, but I can't quite understand what you mean. Could you explain to me step by step how to set it up for myself? Thanks - I'd really appreciate it, as will my watchlist. Cheers Tvoz/talk 03:42, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Here's how I did it -
  • Put links to the pages you want on the special watchlist on their own page i.e. User:Xeno/subpages
  • Type the page name into Special:RecentChangesLinked
  • Bookmark or copy the address bar of the resultant page to create an external link with it.
Hope this helps! Thanks again, agathoclea. xenocidic (talk) 03:50, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks - I never could have figured that out on my own! This is very good as far as it goes, but it's really best for articles with relatively few changes as it's giving all recent changes on those pages. My problem is that some of mine have many changes so I'm still looking for something closer to a watchlist, showing only the latest change per article. Thanks for this, though, to both of you. Tvoz/talk 04:51, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
It is quite important to increase the number of revisions covered to 500 hundred then before saving the link. Agathoclea (talk) 05:50, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
I have it set as 500 - that doesn't help with my problem though. If you include a page like Barack Obama, for example, you find the special list is inundated with the many changes that took place there in one day and I can barely see the other articles' entries. I'm looking for a selected super watchlist. Tvoz/talk 06:30, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Museums

You disappoint me amigo. With Greece i have added external links to fairly decent sources so they should all be able to be expanded decently. I've developed Abdera Archaeological Museum, Aegean Maritime Museum , Aiane Archaeological Museum etc to begin with and will gradually try to fill out all the other greek ones. You said absolutely nothing to me and went to ANI behind my back as if I was creating a huge crime. I certainly wouldn't bother creating these articles if they weren't of notability and couldn't be expanded in a major way. Many of them if expanded fully are likely to be very interesting insights into archaeology in Greece. IN future if you have a question about my work please don't hesitate to speak to me freely ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:20, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I actually tried to make the point that a) it is quite normal for you to create a large number of stubs in a relatively short time and b) that you normally work together with other editors that do flesh out those stubs. That comment was meant to be positive. As far as museums are concerned I cannot make any statement about notability but my recommendation was to look at those articles in a few weeks time to avoid any rash deletions - attempts thereof have been made in the past wasting everybody's time in the process. You might notice that when I do have the time to do newpage patrol I make a special effort to clear your creations as patrolled (see the quicklink on my userpage). Happy editing. Agathoclea (talk) 17:56, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Oh OK no probs. They will all be made worthwhile soon enough but they were Blofeld bot created articles to blue link them. Every museum that was started it officially recognized by the Greek Ministry of Culture meaning each one has symbolic importance in relation to the country's heritage, which for me is a notable assertion. Often it is best to sub stub them and then devleop them afterwards. We know wher we are then and what needs doing. Admittedly I can't dedicate my time solely to them as you know I do a lot of work across wikipedia but I will certainly aim at fleshing most of them out like I did to those earlier. But in future please feel free to ask me first hey. Regards ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:48, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello, Agathoclea.

I wanted to personally thank you for taking part in the project-wide discussions regarding my candidacy for bureaucratship. After bureaucratic discussion, the bureaucrats decided that there was sufficient significant and varied opposition to my candidacy, and thus no consensus to promote. Appologies for answering from my bot account. I intend to close this TfD as delete; before the TfD can be closed, the template must be deleted; before the template can be deleted, its transclusions must be removed to prevent the display of ugly redlinks. So as soon as I have finished removing the transclusions with this account, I will log back in as Happy-melon, delete the template, and close the TfD. At AfD a template ({{closing}} I think) is used, but there is no equivalent for TfD. I hope this explains things. MelonBot (STOP!) 22:24, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

This template seems to be a bit confused now. When I undid the removal of the template from Fürth, it produced "The title of this article contains the character Fuerth. 1) An article about yourself can only stay if it is relevant or "notable" and "verifiable". If you want people to get to know you I suggest one of the many Social Network sites. 2) While you claim that this is you this can at this stage not be proven. The kind of comments you made can therefore not even stand on a userpage. Agathoclea (talk) 14:14, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Ogwen

Hi, just wanted to clarify my edit to the Ogwen talk page. The reason I removed the "WP Wales" tag was that I'd just turned the article about the supposed village of Ogwen (complete with huge UK place infobox!) into a disambiguation page. If it's normal for a disambiguation page to be in WP Wales that's fine by me, just wondered maybe you'd missed the main edit? Cheers, Enaidmawr (talk) 18:40, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Your comments directed to me in Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Michael_Gottlieb_Agnethler were rude and uncalled for. --RandomHumanoid() 22:14, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Have you ever heard the story of the boy who cried wolf? It is not just yourself - it seems a common problem that by constantly restating their position against a large number of opposing opinions they can actually change public opinion. The opposite actually happens and should you actually have something of merit to say it will not be listened to due to the "tiring" effect I made reference to. Agathoclea (talk) 22:23, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
You are making a category error. Discussion and crying wolf are not comparable. Regardless, lead by example, not by being rude. You'll notice that I insulted no one in my comments.--RandomHumanoid() 22:29, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Parishes, civil parishes, communities, etc: a taskforce

Hello, I've seen your comments on the category renaming discussions, and I think you've made some very good points. For quite a while, I and a few others on WP:UKGEO have thought we need a longer, more detailed look at this tier of local government and how it is described and organised on wikipedia for the UK, but possibly restricted to England and Wales for now. There seem to be a few problems, not least of which is the Infobox, which needs a lot of work doing to it including to the name, which is not neutral at all. We've tought of setting up a specific taskforce to deal with the issues and make suggestions which people can dicsuss in more formal ways, and which we think may be better done in a unified way than the piecemeal changes that often get proposed (as is the case with these current category proposals) and which may have undesired side-effects and consequences (as I think we can see if the proposals for Wales go through). So, I'm wondering if you would think such a taskforce would be at all useful, and, if so, if we set one up, whether you would be interested in contributing to it: such a taskforce would probably be assisted greatly by your knowledge of how things are done in Wales.  DDStretch  (talk) 12:19, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Certainly. I can also bring in some ideas from WP Germany where the infobox has dealt with this situation. Agathoclea (talk) 13:06, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Agathoclea, thanks for the tip on a better way to delete excess pages. I'm all for less red tape, in fact I'd do it myself if it were allowed, and wasn't considered bad form. I'll use that tag from now on. I'll assume that I just copy the {{}} and text inside, then paste at the top of the page, unless otherwise notified. Thanks again, and have a good one. Ched (talk) 09:27, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi Agathoclea, thanks for the temporary semi-protection to the Glasvegas article. Can you have a look at Real Radio (Scotland), it looks like it's having the same problem from the same sock puppet vandals. Thanks, --JD554 (talk) 08:17, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Done. When I have a bit more time I will take a closer look at your SSP report. I would appreciate if you would add the already blocked users for completion - mark them as blocked - in order to get the fuller picture. Also has RabAllan (talk · contribs) been clearly identified as the Rab Allan that is mentioned in the article? Agathoclea (talk) 09:18, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll have a look at seeing which users have already been blocked for similar vandalism to the two articles. I don't think I have a feeling that RabAllan isn't the Rab Allan from the band, it was probably just an edit summary to throw more confusion into the pot. Thanks again, --JD554 (talk) 09:23, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
Done. I've gone through the histories of Glasvegas and Real Radio (Scotland), which has shown up a lot more than I originally thought. I've added them to the report. Thanks, --JD554 (talk) 10:57, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Dyfodwg

Completely agree, it is not a community of Wales but it was a parish of sorts as far as I can tell. A parish is a subdivision of of a doicese, but Wales tended to use clasau which were often built around a cantref. But these categories don't exist, not sure why not. I hate to see any article without a category, maybe it should be placed under Category:Geography of Wales until something more suitable could be decided upon? Cheers for ther input. FruitMonkey (talk) 01:16, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

I see you finally got your rename of the category sneaked through. Could you now spend some time filling Category:Communities in Ceredigion with some content as I had to remove the previous content as not fitting the category as the articles were about former church parishes. Agathoclea (talk) 16:18, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
I am not sure what you mean by "finally... sneaked through" since this rename, "Communities" was someone else idea.
As best I recall and looked at them the articles in Category:Parishes in Ceredigion were civil parishes. Please note that a lot of civil parishes are based on former (or even ongoing) church parishes.
If you really think the current articles do not fit you should have brought that up in the discussion. Maybe you did. The library I typically use to access the web with would filter-block that discussion page, so after the first couple days I never looked at it again.
I cannot really talk much about it now either since all the articles are now removed. --Carlaude (talk) 23:05, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
Just a bit frustrated at the time because I did mention in the December CFD that most articles were not about communities. The name communities is right as the welsh version of civil parishes. Just the articles in the categories weren't about that. In fact the headline of the category pointed to Church parishes. Anyway I am trying to fill these categories (and I added the other counties for good measure). The whole UK category system needs a bit of an overhaul. But just throwing CfD's at it won't do the trick. Agathoclea (talk) 23:15, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
1. I now see it was the Dec 28 CfD that I had trouble reading. (Trouble passing any also.)
2. Looking at all your comments then-- I do not see what you wanted to say. You did not vote and were not clear in other ways, right down to the end. E.g. what does "So rather than renaming I suggest to take a good look at the needed category tree and establish a functioning system and move articles which wrongly are in Category:Parishes of Wales to where they should be" mean?
3. Even if had wanted to and had planned to empty and refill the category with new articles-- others would not have let the CfD go forward-- because that is not how we change categories. We make categories fit the articles in them at that time. --Carlaude (talk) 23:52, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Hundreds in Wales

You commented on another talk page: "In Wales though I find a lot of articles placing villages in parishes of certain "hundreds" - entities long gone." Could you give some examples? I've had a quick look, and couldn't find any such mentions - and it would be a shame if other editors were distracted by thinking that a problem exists when, in fact, it doesn't. Thanks. Ghmyrtle (talk) 12:18, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Nolton and Roch, Camrose, Pembrokeshire, Johnston, Pembrokeshire, and Dale, Pembrokeshire. To a lesser degree Llangwm, Pembrokeshire. Just following the backlinks from one Hundred in Pembrokehire, where I already tidied a number of other articles. You will find the town or otherwise more prominent articles to be fine but the more obscure places are based on some 1870's topographical dictionary. Agathoclea (talk) 15:57, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
OK, thanks. Those edits were all done some time ago by an editor in California, who probably isn't particularly aware of current local government arrangements. I would have been more concerned if it was a local editor making those changes! I've pretty much steered clear of Pembrokeshire in my edits, but if you want help cleaning those articles up, let me know. Ghmyrtle (talk) 16:25, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Yes I'm aware that there's nowhere near enough material here to take legal action, but the edits are becoming more prevalent. Vandalism on Real Radio (Scotland) and Glasvegas

I am responsible for much of the vandalism on these pages, most notably the shocking recent edits to Glasvegas. My friend and I are two college kids who thought it would be funny to vandalise wiki - we didn't actually realise that it was causing people genuine work. He was the other "puttetfarm" and has been banned. I see there's still some kind of case open to chase and ban me. Why is this the case? I've admitted on the SSP investigation page and to NishKid64 personally, yet never been acknowledged. Am I receiving an "overall" ban or what? I want to straighten up my act on WIki and make good edits (which some of those usernames listed were used for despite what some admins are saying). I want to contribute good work to Wiki and put this in the past. If you're trying to prevent vandalism, then why am I having such a hard time trying to make amends with the admins? I've yet to receive any acknowledgement from anyone. I'm free to edit as I please currently, but have refrained from vandalism, although when I don't receive the time of day from any of the admins it makes me wonder why. What's happening now? And why is the "case" still open? Let's put this in the past, then? I've learned my lesson... if there's a ban coming I will readily accept it and make constructive edits on return. I simply see no need for an ongoing "chase". Damone Rhodes (talk) 17:47, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

I appreciate the forgive and forget attitude. I genuinely feel that I have done a lot of good work on WIkipedia, but myself and a number of friends found it amusing also to vandalise, without fully realising that it's a genuine taboo and people are working hard to eradicate it. On the SSP investigation page, I believe the chief account was DerrikLounds. The other is was the work of a chum. I plan to use a final username to continue on Wiki, as this one has been used to essentially ask for a new start, and I want to avoid bias. Damone Rhodes (talk) 23:07, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Well, I thought I had the footnoting method down cold, as I've been making them without problem for some time. Now I've done something catty-whompus...Guess I didn't quite crack footnotes yet. I'll study up on it in the next couple of days.SixBlueFish (talk) 13:47, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

♠Hey, thanks for the help; I've got footnotes down now I think, and am studying up on all the alternative "reference methods" in use in Wikipedia. And thanks also for the editing in Barmat; helps me to watch and get some pointers. I'll probably pick that up again in earnest on Thursday.

The scandal itself is actually most interesting from the viewpoint of what the right-wing (and, by way of counter-attack, the left-wing and moderate) press did with it (not i.e. for what it really was but what it was made to appear to be).

It became a model for how the Nazis would take something with a little bit of truth in it and inflate it hyperbolically to Armageddon-like proportions (Reichstag fire another good example -- find one deranged Dutch communist who went crazy with matches and turn it into a Moscow-inspired Red conspiracy to destroy Germany). Yea, Barmat wasn't the most sympathetic guy in the world: buy up food in Holland and sell it to starving children in Germany and make a lot of bucks, but hey -- that's capitalism for you. Find an ex-Chancellor and pay him a "commission" to exploit his political connections to bestow commercial favors on Barmat: yes, pretty seedy, but interestingly, Bauer was never charged with a crime.

Barmat was a Jew -- an "Eastern" one --and a rich one, and that was grist to the volkisch propaganda mill. SixBlueFish (talk) 18:03, 18 February 2009 (UTC)♠

Re: Images moving to commons when image already exists there.

I agree fully :) You should ask Sfan00_IMG who uploaded it under that name to commons though. Apparently both versions differ (they don't share the same hash, hence the "The Wikimedia Commons has another file with the same name" warning). This is why the bot only detected the renamed version and not the original one. I don't see any visible difference though so I guess it should be easily deletable on Commons as a duplicate. -- lucasbfr talk 10:02, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Actually on second look, both images do differ. Can you check which one is correct and nominate the other one for deletion on Commons? -- lucasbfr talk 12:08, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Bauer

♠ He was indeed reinstated to party membership, and did serve again in Parliament (I guess Social Democrats have short memories and they all kissed and made up :-)) ), but the source in question does state that he resigned as a result of the Barmat Scandal.

Another interesting point in the source (this is Fulda, which is by far the best on the Barmat incident and which is mainly directed to the Power of the Press in this period) is that Bauer was sort of an ingenue in dealing with the press. Well, it was the 1920s and way before TV and spin doctors and so on, so maybe that's understandable. But they really did hoist Bauer with his own petard. Even the hot shot Weimar pols were not media-savvy.

The right-wing manipulated Bauer like a little rag doll, by asking him point-blank "Do you have anything at all to do with this mess?" and he lied and said "Absolutely not!"

At this point the right-wing Berlin paper (supplied with good leaks from the friendly right-wing prosecutor) whipped out the letter from Barmat to Bauer about the commission dispute (ye olde Smoking Gun - ooooppps!!!) and Bauer was, surely at this point, entirely mortified. Well, it could have been worse: these days, they would call him before the Committee, put him under oath, let him lie in that forum, and then indict him for perjury.

I'll check Fulda again in the next couple of days anyway, as I'm going through the sources again to generate ver 2.0 of the Barmat article.

Bauer's career & the Barmat Scandal

Here's the "final" word on our friend Mr. Bauer, who despite his probable good intentions did not exactly help the forces for republicanism and democracy in Weimar Germany:

The first climax of Prussian investigating commission took place in late January 1925, with Gustav Bauer, a prominent Social Democrat, giving evidence. He was an SPD member of the Reichstag at the time of his testimony and had previously served in various roles in the Weimar government.

He served as Minister of Labor in the period October 1918- August 1919. Thereafter, Bauer succeeded Philipp Scheidemann as Chancellor. Scheidemann had refused to support any decision to sign the Treaty of Versailles; he resigned a few days before its signature on 28 June 1919. Bauer's new government eventually formed on 14 August 1919; he then served as Chancellor until 26 March 1920.

He then served in the next government (the first Mueller cabinet), as Minister of Finance from March to June 1920 and as Minister of Transportation in May-June 1920.

Bauer later played a dual role as Vice-Chancellor and Finance Minister in the Wirth government, from May 1921 until November 1922.

During his period of government service, he had helped Barmat win food supply contracts with various Reich departments. After leaving office he helped Barmat one time with a Government scrap-metal deal; Bauer was to receive a commission from Barmat for this help. p. 95

He attempted to conceal his involvement with Barmat, denying to the press in early January 1925 (after the arrest of the Barmat brothers) that he served on any Barmat supervisory board. p. 95. This was a lie, and he was forced to admit as much under the cross-examination by the Commission.

He was also forced to admit that his actions in helping Barmat win government contracts were considerably more frequent and more involved that his previous statements to the press had indicated.

However, he steadfastly and repeatedly denied to the Commission that he had received any financial compensation from Barmat. However, a few days later in early February, the Lokal-Anzeiger reprinted a letter from Barmat to Bauer as a part of an article on the scandal. This letter was written during the period of their 1923 commission dispute over the scrap-metal deal, and identified the occasions on which Bauer had received money from Barmat.

Bauer was caught in a bald-faced lie and, it would appear, had committed perjury in denying any receipt of compensation. The SPD promptly asked Bauer to resign from the party and the Reichstag, and he did so on 6 February 1925. p. 95-98. He regained admission to the party, having fought to re-establish his blemished reputation, in May 1926.SixBlueFish (talk) 16:51, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Now all we need is the details of him getting back into the Reichstag, where he apparently was until 1928 Agathoclea (talk) 17:03, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
♠Yea, and this part is really interesting (and so far, mysterious). He must have been a huge embarrassment to the party, yet he finagled his way back in within just over a year and got back into parliament. Did he say "Well, yea, I lied under oath, but you know... it was just to a bunch of Prussian right-wingers, and they deserved it anyway because it was just a political witch-hunt"? Or did he try a Bill Clinton and say "Well, they just misinterpreted what I said." (Fulda is quite clear that Bauer was asked repeatedly if he got any compensation and that he steadfastly denied it).
I'll see what if anything I can find out.
I checked "history" and the article was created on 15 February. When does 5 days run out? No way I can get finished today (the 19th)...♠SixBlueFish (talk) 17:19, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Template:WikiProject Germany → Template:WPGERMANY(?)

I'm curious about your use of AWB to replace instances of Template:WPGERMANY (a valid redirect) with its target, Template:WikiProject Germany (one recent example). It seems to me that this sort of edit goes counter to both editing guidelines regarding working redirects and the AWB rules of use ("Avoid making insignificant or inconsequential edits…"). Is there some compelling reason for this that trumps both of these guidelines? — Bellhalla (talk) 15:27, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

There are scripts available dealing with article assessment on the article page. When a banner template is used on the talkpage that is not the main banner it will make it appear, that there was no article assessment for that particular project. Therefore it has a significant effect and while the redirect is not broken per se - the effect is broken. Agathoclea (talk) 18:29, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Skeeter Jones

You commented on my page (under contruction) for Skeeter Jones. I plan to document his work around the city of San Francisco with photographs of his completed renovations along with the "before" photos when they are available. I think that the quality and quantity of his work makes him a valid topic for a Wikipedia entry. Do you have any suggestions for how best to ensure that this is clear to others who might question the appropriateness of this entry?

By the way, I am working to make the tone neutral, and I'm also working to learn how to format better. If you question whether or not Skeeter is important enough to warrant inclusion, that's a subjective issue and I'd appreciate pointers to clear guideposts... In my personal opinion, he will be heralded as a genius at some point in the future. At what point does an as-yet-unrecognized giant among artists warrant inclusion?

You fill find the general inclusion criteria at WP:N - In particular this will refer you to Wikipedia:Notability_(people)#Creative_professionals. What speaks against notability in the wikipedia sense is your comment above: "as-yet-unrecognized giant among artists" - The point is he needs to be recognized to warrant inclusion. same topic. I can understand why you reverted most of my changes. But I don not understand why you have deleted the small paras in the articles of County and County borough linked to the "normal" district-articles?!?!?--Gereonmc (talk) 18:01, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
If you meant this edit then you were referring to something, that was redlinked after deleting the cut-and-paste moves ie not the "normal" district-articles and implying that the about 25000 articles in Wikipedia do get it wrong. This is a more complex situation and I would suggest you contribute to wikipedia in more non-controversial subjects. You will soon understand how we source the details in the articles. Have a gander over to Talk:Kiev to see what a potential minefield government decreed translation terms can be. Regardless of how one organisation might wish to be translated common usage will be used here. Agathoclea (talk) 19:03, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
It was nevertheless an interesting experience in how wikipedia works. Obviously accuracy is not the main goal of wikipedia. Comprehensibility is maybe a nice aim for the democratization of knowledge but not appopriate and not compatible with my conception of an Encyclopedia, in which accuracy is the main objective and comprehensibility is only a question of implemetation. Doing it this way you obliterate mankinds knowledge and you don't cope with the responsibility wikipedias success gave you.--Gereonmc (talk) 20:23, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
Wikipedia is about verifiability not about truth. I know things to be wrong here but cannot change it without proper sourcing. And on some things we have to make editorial decisions so that there is constancy as far as the whole is concerned. Agathoclea (talk) 20:30, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Torsten Amft

Did you actually read [this]? Did you notice that most of the relevance was provided by anon's (actually Mr Amft himself?) Jcwf (talk) 02:44, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

FYI

I'm going offline shortly, but if you decide where best to raise the interwiki-translation-templates-self-referentially-polluting-the-mainspace issue (lulz, bias), feel free to start the discussion and perform the procedural close on the mass-TFD. –xeno (talk) 20:54, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

municipality/community

Oh.

I thought it was a matter of personal preference, and since a town, city, borough or any of a number of other entities can be a "municipality", that word seemed a bit meaningless as to the municipality's level. However, I cannot readily think of a better word. I realize that even "community" is rather inexact.

Nonetheless, I shall adjust my cheatsheet so that all articles hereafter will come out saying "municipality", and link to the appropriate article. But I refuse to go back and edit the HUNDREDS of articles about Gemeinden that I've already translated.

I've done a lot here. I'll let someone else have a go.Kelisi (talk) 14:32, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Perhaps "municipality" should be qualified with "lesser" or "minor". Kelisi (talk) 14:41, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Jerome, Arkansas is an even bigger chuckle. St. David's would have to do a lot of shrinking to be a smaller city than that. As for the 100,000 cutoff figure, I'm well aware of this and have edited at least several articles about German towns that called them cities. Either English-speaking translators think that Stadt is uniformly translated "city", or German-speaking translators don't undertand that the Großstadt/Kleinstadt distinction is de rigueur in English. Where I live (when I'm not teaching school in China, ie Canada), the distinction is enshrined in law, but isn't always logical. Check out the Town of Newmarket and the City of Woodstock. Pembroke Castle

I've left a message, and tagged a couple of the articles that weren't duplicates of existing ones. Hopefully some better-quality edits will emerge with help. Thanks, BencherliteTalk 12:59, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Hmm, are you suggesting I buy it with my Amazon birthday present gift voucher and improve the articles that way?! The enthusiastic-but-slightly-misguided efforts of our mutual friend continue; however, at least one editor has stepped in to help make something out of the sub-stubs... Regards, BencherliteTalk 20:40, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
Actually I am seriously tempted - or as I just found my library card again I might convince the local library to get a copy - as it is a book about the locality. Agathoclea (talk) 21:30, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
Just spotted that you're Pembrokeshire-based - it's the wrong end of the country for me, but a perfect sideline for you! BencherliteTalk 21:33, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

I receive the same advice from User:John Carter. I had wanted feedback from the individual WikiProjects, but I will stop bothering all the WikiProjects and just add the template. Thanks for the feedback. LDS-SPA1000 (talk) 20:06, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the notification on this. User:Infoart has left a bit of a legacy of articles. A task force gave them all a looking over: see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Visual arts/Infoart articles. For any future issues over his or other visual arts articles, a good place to post is Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Visual arts. Ty 03:51, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Mehmed V

Hello there. Did you mean to find someone to compare the articles on English and Turkish wikis? What about German?

Those edits seem to be accurate but if you think the article should be revised, I can try to find someone with deeper experience in this subject to monitor the edits made on the article. Please let me know, thanks. ----Superyetkinileti 00:24, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Hello again. I have informed the community about the matter and hope someone will be able to examine the recent edits in detail. Hope to talk to you again. ----Superyetkinileti 22:15, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Pergamon Altar

I have removed your note regarding expansion of Pergamon Altar from Portal:Germany as the article does not really relate to Germany

This is quite simply wrong. Putting aside that it is in Germany, and the central importance of classical culture to modern Germany, it was also a design source for Speer and is the subject of an ongoing cultural patrimony dispute between Germany and Turkey. It is as much German as it is Greek. Please do not be so peremptory just because it is beyond your ken. Twospoonfuls (ειπέ) 11:53, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

There is a discussion that from your previous comments I think you might be interested in at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2009_June_9#Category:CfD_2009-06. Debresser (talk) 17:57, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Mistaken about Boothroyd MFD

Please see my comments at the MFD in response to your "procedural keep" comment. Assume this is the only discussion on the matter. Lets not presuppose this will eventually get back to DRV; lets just look at the content and decide if the article should be kept or not. Pretend this is the first AFD go-round and comment like that... --Jayron32.talk.contribs 14:46, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

I think I made myself clear that I feel notability is getting established while I will defer to the next round of DRV for that. Notability is getting clearer and clearer - anything else is a question of WP:SOFIXIT not of article deletion. Agathoclea (talk) 19:41, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
Good enough. From your initial objection, it made it seem like you were objecting to the nature of the MFD on procedural grounds and not on article content. I just wanted to make sure you had the full background of this unique and unusual case. Thank you for clearing that up your position a bit. --Jayron32.talk.contribs 23:03, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
