Tone down ...[edit]

"Tone down, claims like that really require refs to be cited, tagged" It is hard today to realise how important the Europa was. I'll dig out the refs when I have time, and then will reconsider the sentence; but it is important for the Europa's significance to be made clear in the lead.

Also, re the foam core wings, some builders had terrible problems and added a lot of weight to the wings with filler, and still ended with a plane looking as if it were made of ferrocement! The XS wings were a godsend to all.

Do have a look at the talk page: I've explained why I can't provide a citation. Cheers. Arrivisto (talk) 17:24, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

2016 Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director Search Community Survey[edit]

The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has appointed a committee to lead the search for the foundation’s next Executive Director. One of our first tasks is to write the job description of the executive director position, and we are asking for input from the Wikimedia community. Please take a few minutes and complete this survey to help us better understand community and staff expectations for the Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director.

Gradient Golden[edit]

No, it's not anything you did wrong. There's a system bug whereby every once in a while, for no obvious reason a small cluster of newly created articles will end up wrongly being reported on Wikipedia's tools for detecting uncategorized articles even though they do have categories on them — and doing a quick delete-restore on them is the only way I can clear those articles back off that list. It's nothing you did wrong; it's just a stupid server burp that nobody can prevent in advance except for the bugfixers. Bearcat (talk) 14:37, 3 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your note here. Okay that is great, thank you for letting me know. I create a lot of new articles, so if it was at my end I would want to fix it. I hope that the powers-that-be get the software fixed so that doesn't happen in the future. - Ahunt (talk) 14:40, 3 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you reverting Cyberbot?[edit]

If the bot has a problem, report it. Stop randomly reverting cyberbot without an informative edit summary. If it is broken, how? ThePlatypusofDoom (Talk) 23:42, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It has already been reported, diagnosed and a solution agreed to, which includes me reverting it and fixing its broken edits, see User_talk:Cyberpower678#Cyberbot. - Ahunt (talk) 23:45, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't say to revert it. It's also completely messing up the anti-vandalism feed. ThePlatypusofDoom (Talk) 23:49, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well I fixed all the articles as per consensus on that talk page, now I am just cleaning up the talk pages, but if it would make life easier I can just remove the text, rather than revert the talk pages. - Ahunt (talk) 23:52, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Tanzer Sailboats[edit]

Thanks Ahunt for the entries for Tanzer sailboats particularly the Tanzer 16. As the owner of a 50 year old Tanzer Constellation (the first name of the Tanzer 16), I have been doing my own research on the Constellation, Tanzer 16 and Tanzer Overnighter. Glad to see the first wikis have been created.

I was most interested in the picture you took of the Tanzer 16, sail number 1456, as that boat is sailing on a body of water I know well, and actually will be sailing on tomorrow in a race (Shark 24). I suspect that you may be on the north side of the river.

In any event, what you have included about the Constellation 16, Tanzer 16, and Overnighter 16 (The names, as far as I can tell, were actually Tanzer Constellation, Tanzer 16 and Tanzer Overnighter) is supported by sources, and that's good. There are minor errors in those sources, which I may fix, though my sources are tougher to cite.

Thanks again for getting the ball rolling. Canadian Uisge (talk) 03:29, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Glad that was all helpful. It seemed amazing to me that we had no articles on any Tanzer boats, so I at least got them all started, with photos from my own collection, where possible. I sail a US Yachts US 22 out of Nepean, so south side, although that photo was shot at Alymer! It was a bit of an "arty" photo, with the trees framing the boat. - Ahunt (talk) 11:35, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Swiss Air Force VFR Code[edit]

Hello, at the moment, i haven't found a good ref for the 6100 Swiss Air Force VFR code. I don't knew if this is good enough [1], don't log in just scrol down, list on the bottom Unfortunatly Radar24 shows no fighters but it shows the VFR 6100 PC-21.. but I am afraid Radar24 is not well enough for wikipedia. FFA P-16 (talk) 22:18, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I am afraid that ref doesn't really prove anything. Those squawks could be assigned for any reason. We really need a better ref. - Ahunt (talk) 22:20, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Just for information: Unfortunatly, it is in no public document that the swiss Military use the Mod3 sq 6100 for VFR flights. I had searched for it. So I can not put this into the English wikipeda. :-( FFA P-16 (talk) 14:49, 25 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the welcome![edit]

Thanks much for taking the time to welcome me to Wikipedia. I have been a heavy lurker for years, and have anonymously corrected typos and the like whenever I have encountered them. Recently, I finally decided that I should have an account, given the amount of time I spend on the site. I just wanted to drop in here for a quick clarification: Did you send me the links that you did because I erred in how I submitted my most recent edit, or were those simply part of the "welcome package"? I don't think I made a mistake, but I didn't want to miss something if I am incorrect. If so, what did I do wrong? Thanks again, and I appreciate the welcome! 4tesseract4 (talk) 20:22, 22 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your note here! No you did fine, that is just a "standard welcome package" to help newcomers here. It's usefulness depends greatly on how long someone has been editing as an IP. I hope you stay and help us build the encyclopedia! - Ahunt (talk) 14:52, 23 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Tomark Viper[edit]

Afternoon Ahunt,

I'm fairly sure that the Prezke prop is as stated in Jane's 2011 (it's in my 2011 initial version), though I'll check the next time I'm in the library. In the meantime I've put it back in. DUC is another propmaker and the types named exist; I guess the other two companies do as well. However, the Tomark site says particular props for particular engine types, so the list is misleading and should not appear, even if Tomark fit them to other models of Rotax in the Viper. While I'm in the library I'll check the 2016 Jane's to see if there are any substantial updates.

Thanks again for the vigilant despamming! Cheers,TSRL (talk) 14:42, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"Prezke Aero Technologies" must be a very secret company, there is no mention of them on the internet that I can find outside the Tomark Viper Wikipedia article, but if Jane's says that, then okay. - Ahunt (talk) 15:12, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ahha! I made a typo - it's Peszke and this Polish firm is in the prop-makers list in JAWA11/12. I'll correct the spelling. Cheers,TSRL (talk) 16:31, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

LOL, well it was almost a year ago that you started it! I often forget which articles I have started, which is why I keep a list of them on my user page, but then I have started over 2000 of them, so may be forgiven the lapse. - Ahunt (talk) 11:06, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Honcho (magazine) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, a group of people, an individual animal, an organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content, or an organized event, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. The Big Bad Wolfowitz (aka Hullaballoo). Proposed deletion of Honcho (magazine)[edit]

The article Honcho (magazine) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No assertion of significance, let alone a claim of notability. No reliable sourcing -- only ref is a site selling back issues. Speedy declined with rationale that print magazines aren't eligible for db-inc, which I don't believe is consistent with past practice or the way webzines have been treated under A7.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. I'm beginning to suspect a compromised account, or perhaps a relative/friend editing on the same account. It's quite odd for someone who's been around awhile. - BilCat (talk) 10:48, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The comments about "destroying someone's work" are typical of a newbie, not an experienced user who knows that everything is in the history. Very odd. - BilCat (talk) 10:53, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Regardless of the reason and the "heatedness" of the debate editors have to remain WP:CIVIL and that post I removed was well over the line. If the account was compromised, I hope the editor regains control of it. - Ahunt (talk) 10:59, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Doesn't matter how long you've been around. A revert always hurts if you think the other person's edit is much less constructive than your own. Much more so if someone lies that he's reverting, but still keeps your changes. I could also have raised an edit war resolution request, but decided to step down, as the history of the article shows, that my opponent obviously has a personal stake in this. Also his needing many edits for a single sentence leads me to believe that he's very impulsive instead of making up his mind soberly. I have better things to do than argue with people willing to spend so much of their energy on edit wars. --BjKa (talk) 11:26, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. I was just letting Ahunt know that you also asked me for help, and that I answered on your talk page. - BilCat (talk) 06:36, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your note here. In looking though the background it seems that a sockpuppet investigation is underway. It is not necessarily a big problem, just remain cool, read through Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/SPI/Guidance and request a "checkuser" be carried out. That will show the IP addresses involved and be conclusive in settling the case. I had a sockpuppet accusation some years ago. I settled it by posting my IP address from a signed out comment and that showed that I wasn't even on the same continent as the other users. That ended it pretty quickly. - Ahunt (talk) 10:32, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Mohammed Galib Hasan (talk) 13:42, 15 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Generally the best approach is to upload them to Commons, make sure they have good descriptive titles and appropriate categories and then editors will locate them there and put them into articles on English and other language versions of Wikipedia. The key thing is good file names, though or else they will nit get found. - Ahunt (talk) 14:21, 15 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Userbox Teaching?[edit]

Hi Ahunt, I'm Kingstevenrules. You welcomed me to Wikipedia a few weeks ago, and told me to ask you for help that I may need. Well, that time has come. I come to you seeking knowledge about Userboxes. So... O' Great and Wise Ahunt, will you teach me the ways of Userboxes?

Thanks, Kingstevenrules (talk) 17:57, 23 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, no problem, what would you like to know about them? - Ahunt (talk) 21:59, 23 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
How do you make one? Is there any special coding that you need to know in order for it to work? And also, which would be better to use for making a userbox, Visual Editor or Source Editor? Kingstevenrules (talk) 14:49, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Probably the best guide to getting started is at Wikipedia:Userboxes. I would suggest having a read of that first and then try making a box using the coding for a similar one and then modifying it as described there, to change colours, border, etc. Use the direct coding, I never use visual editor for anything! It is best to do that in your own user space. If you get stuck drop me a note back here and I'll be happy to help. - Ahunt (talk) 22:07, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The reason is there are 2 different variants under development right now, the upcoming 3.2 that is still Slackware based, currently as rc5 (all other Porteus versions have been released as final after rc2), and a new different version that will supersede the Slackware one, for now called "Nemesis". (Personally I am no friend of that name...) That will be (most probably) be called Porteus 3.0. All that can be backed up with references to forum posts, but how to include it into the article without getting the critique of "promotional article about a non-notable Linux distro" once again? Cheers, Rava77 (talk) 22:45, 27 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

All you need to include that are proper refs. Project announcements are fine for that purpose, but not forum posts, unless they are official announcements, see WP:SPS for some details. - Ahunt (talk) 22:52, 27 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm.... but our main programmer, Brokenman, usually uses forum post for such info. Often he then posts such official info in a read-only thread. Would such a Info, Read-Only thread by the only person with rank of administrator be okay for the purpose? I already sent him a PM and await his answer. Rava77 (talk) 23:02, 27 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It should be, as long as he can be identified as such. It is really a matter of the authority of the source. Lots of software projects use forums for official announcements, as long as it is clear who is posting, that is okay. - Ahunt (talk) 23:05, 27 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

October 2016[edit]

Stop icon

Your recent editing history at Talk:Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the article's talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. Eck (talk) 18:07, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, you are wrong, I only reverted twice, you reverted three times, you are in violation of the rules, not me. - Ahunt (talk) 18:15, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to see that you got a 24 hour block out of this. - Ahunt (talk) 19:04, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

See this deletion of a photo that you apparently took. Do you know of any legitimate reason for its removal? Thanks. - BilCat (talk) 07:01, 3 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nope I can't think of any reason, just vandalism I guess. Thanks for reverting it! - Ahunt (talk) 11:37, 3 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. - BilCat (talk) 16:32, 3 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Ranger Yachts, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Conglomerate. Is there info for adding rottentomatoes / metacritic / similar review pages?[edit]

Is there some info with (empty) templates for adding rottentomatoes.com / metacritic.com / similar review pages? I tried searching the wikihelp, but to no prevail.
(with "similar" I mean as NPOV accepted review pages as the 1st 2 named, I cannot recall the ones I saw on here, cause rottentomatoes & metacritic are the most common while the other(s?) is quite rare to be found... Rava77 (talk) 18:20, 11 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your question. In general because WP:LINKFARM we use these are cited refs or don't otherwise include them in articles. - Ahunt (talk) 19:03, 11 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Odd question on thumb sizings[edit]

Ahunt, I have a question regarding thumb sizings in photos in articles. Sometimes, people add an odd thumb sizing, such as "261x261px", as in this diff. Any idea where that comes from? Thanks, and I'm just curious. - BilCat (talk) 11:04, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, that is downright odd sizing, indeed. The next time someone phones me from "The Windows Technical Department", I'll ask him. - Ahunt (talk) 11:28, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
LOL. Yeah, I've gotten those calls to, but not in a while, thankfully. - BilCat (talk) 11:30, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I get them almost every day. Those guys seem to know what is going on in India. I'll ask them! - Ahunt (talk) 11:46, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Venting[edit]

I've been on WP over 10 years now. I wasn't on it very long before becoming convinced that open editing was a mistake, and every day convinces me more and more of that. I hate to say it, but far too many incompetent people edit WP, many of them being functionally illiterate in English, including people who speak English as a first language! I really love the positive aspects of editing WP, but being an unpaid babysitter just sucks. Sigh. (See this last in a series of edits that set me off. One report of intent, and a slew of editors act like its settled fact!) - BilCat (talk) 16:34, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

LOL, that is all quite true. I like to think that we are building a really valuable encyclopedia, despite all the idiots here! - Ahunt (talk) 16:45, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If only the Foundation thought so too, and helped us do that effectively. - BilCat (talk) 16:48, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I think that fact that we have a pretty good product here despite it, shows that we got something right. On the other hand it might be much better yet with quicker blocks issued! - Ahunt (talk) 16:52, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II[edit]

Chevron[edit]

Hello Ahunt, I noticed the article Chevron (aeronautics) was merged into turbofan without any discussion, what do you think of it? --TerrainAhead (talk) 03:13, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It is a pretty minor design feature, so the merge makes sense to me. With the redirect readers will be able to find it okay. - Ahunt (talk) 12:47, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Page mover[edit]

Ahunt, have you thought about applying for Wikipedia:Page mover? With your experience, I think you would do well with it. I've had it for several weeks now, and it's very useful for cleaning up ill-advised moves (Pete - cough), or otherwise making moves where necessary. Given the work you do with images, Wikipedia:File mover might also be something you could do. I didn't ask for that one as I don't do much work with images. - BilCat (talk) 08:14, 23 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the suggestion. That sounds like it might be a useful tool, so I have applied. - Ahunt (talk) 14:03, 23 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Page mover granted[edit]

Hello, Ahunt. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, and move subpages when moving the parent page(s).

Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.

Interview invitation from a Wikipedia researcher in University of Minnesota[edit]

Hello Ahunt,

I am Bowen Yu, a Ph.D. student from GroupLens Research at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. Currently, we are undertaking a study about turnover (editors leaving and joining) in WikiProjects within Wikipedia. We are trying to understand the effects of member turnovers in the WikiProject group, in terms of the group performance and member interaction, with a purpose of learning how to build successful online communities in future. More details about our project can be found on this meta-wiki page.

I would like to invite you for an interview if you are interested in our study and willing to share your experience with us. The interview will be about 30 - 45 minutes via either Skype or Google Hangout. You will receive a $10 gift card as compensation afterwards.

Please reach me at bowen@cs.umn.edu if you are interested or have any questions.

Thank you,

Bowen

Survivors/Surviving Aircraft Section Name[edit]

I noticed that you changed the name of the section on the Aeronca C-2 article from "Survivors" to "Surviving aircraft". I have no problem with that, but I could've sworn that those sections were to be titled the former rather than the latter. I checked the WP:Aircraft Style Guide, and you are indeed correct. However, I have to ask, did it change at some point? —Noha307 (talk) 21:56, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah it was changed a few years ago, mostly because the term "survivors" sounded like it referred to people who survived flying or crashing the aircraft. "Surviving aircraft" is more clear. I should note that if they are all in museums then the section should be "Aircraft on display", instead. - Ahunt (talk) 22:03, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"hot plug" trademark - the trademark is dead[edit]

Per your reversion of User:Deansmith750's edit to HAL (software):

Over and above the MOS issues you mention, the trademark on "hot plug" for Core International has status DEAD, if you search the US Patent and Trademark Office database for "hot plug" ("basic word mark search", put "hot plug" in as the search term, and select ALL as the field), so it's not even a trademark any more. Guy Harris (talk) 23:36, 18 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your note here. I reverted dozens of his inserts of "trademark registered" for hot plug on the basis of WP:TM alone, so this news makes it even more appropriate. Perhaps I should have left him a WP:COI note, too, as inserting these are almost all he has done on Wikipedia. - Ahunt (talk) 23:39, 18 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open![edit]

Hello, Ahunt. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

PAC E-350 Expedition[edit]

Should the PAC E-350 Expedition have its own variant article, or continue to be covered at Found FBA-2, at least for now? I assume the specs will be somewhat different. - BilCat (talk) 22:22, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A good question! I would say once it actually enters production at PAC and changes are made to the basic design and it has its own specs published, that it could have its own article then, until then it is adequately covered where it is. - Ahunt (talk) 22:33, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

American Airlines flight 191[edit]

I am the user who edited the American Airlines flight 191 article, by adding the names of flight attendants onboard. You had re-edited by taking it out. I urge you to understand that, we should add the names of flight attendants also because American Airlines flight 191 is the worst-air accident to happen in US history. There are many air accidents in which flight attendants names are also written in Wikipedia. Examples are:- American Airlines flight 11, United Airlines flight 175, American Airlines flight 77, United Airlines flight 93 and LOT Flight 5055. LOT Flight 5055 is particularly Poland's worst air disaster. So please understand. Books Nash (talk) 11:00, 4 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In general we don't list non-notable people in air accident articles and in this context "non-notable" means people without biographies on Wikipedia. The main reasons for this are at WP:NOTMEMORIAL. You might argue to include the flight attendants, but others have argued to include all passengers as well. As fas as "other articles do this" see WP:OTHERSTUFFEXITS. It just means that needs fixing, too. If you really think there is a case to be made for this specific article, then take it to the article talk page for WP:CONSENSUS. - Ahunt (talk) 15:23, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
