User page

Not aware if anyone reads userpages (it seems to me that they get vandalised more than they get read), but your user page says that you "fight vandalism and wiki-gnome". I know what you mean, but someone who doesn't know what a wiki-gnome is could easily assume that you fight both vandalism, and Wiki-gnomes. . Just pointing out the ambiguity. Brambleclawx 23:23, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

Good point :), although I believe it would then be fight vandalism and wiki-gnomes. Hope the link is sufficient... I like reading userpages sometimes as well. Airplaneman 23:25, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
Its nice to read userpages; you find all sorts of things like collections of weird vandalism such as this one. Brambleclawx 23:27, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
Lol... BTW, how do you see my replies so fast? Airplaneman 23:30, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
Constant refreshing. I visit my watchlist after almost every edit. Brambleclawx 23:32, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
Haha! It's almost disconcerting :). Didn't know of a disease named Watchlistitis before :D. I check my watchlist (my most visited page... ever...) about every 10-15 minutes. Airplaneman 23:34, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
And now there's also Editcountitis. Brambleclawx 23:40, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
I've heard of that one! Do you like my new or old userpage better? Airplaneman 23:42, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
I don't really have a preference... I just think that you seem to change layout/color very often. Brambleclawx 23:43, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
Heh... :) can't seem to find something I want to keep for the long term... guess it grows old rather quickly. One day, I'll find something I really like! (I like the current one the best, of course.) BTW, after reading it, I show some symptoms of watchlistitis. Uh-oh... Airplaneman 23:47, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
I've probably got more severe watchlistitis. Though I don;t do the more extreme things yet. =) Brambleclawx 23:49, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

Hey, I'm busy right now with science and french projects due soon, but if you have time, could you add the warriors books to Category:Novels by Erin Hunter? Or if you feel this is unnecessary, you could tag the category for deletion. Brambleclawx 20:58, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

I'm busy, too (making a Wiki for a history project, studying for finals...). Maybe we could make Category:Warriors (novel series) a subcategory of the cat you mentioned. Airplaneman 00:36, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
Hm... ok. I'll try to get to that at some point. Brambleclawx 00:58, 9 May 2010 (UTC)

Very close to (old) home

How on WP did you end up here and in particular here and here? Presumeably you follow some sort of anti-vandal watchlist that has escaped my attention or perhaps just browse Recent Changes at random? Or you are actually a god? --Jubileeclipman 22:12, 9 May 2010 (UTC)

I would love to be a god, but sadly, I'm just a human being :). Yes, it was pure luck! I was doing some intense Igloo-ing and ran into vandals on King's Manor School. Igloo failed right before I pressed the "revert" button, so I used good old Twikle. For all three, a vandal called 86.183.98.242 was spamming, so I froze him with my Igloo powers. So one vandal, three reverts, and a whole lot of luck brought me close to your (old) home :). Airplaneman 22:18, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
Oh, and what do you think about this? Airplaneman 22:19, 9 May 2010 (UTC)

I usually compare diffs in many different combos... not sure how I missed that. I'll undo myself and remove the unhelpful reference removal manually. I hope you accept my apology. Archive pages for FAR, PR etc

I have never been involved in reviews so I am now confused... Why are all the reviews already archived? I.e. you actually start a review as Name/archiveN rather than end it by archiving! Seems totally screwy to me. Any clarification? --Jubileeclipman 00:36, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

I have not the slightest clue
I've wondered that too
I looked it up
With no apparent luck
Anyway... maybe so it doesn't have to be moved into an archive later? Maybe you could ask HereToHelp or another experienced FA reviewer (I'm more experienced with GAs) Airplaneman 01:27, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Like the poem! How's this?
WP:GAR makes far more sense:
The subpages are /N rather than /archiveN.
Think I'll ask on the FAR[away?] talkpage
Even though getting an answer might take an age.
Or ask HereToHelp, just as you suggest
... er... um... ... ...best
--Jubileeclipman 01:42, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Liked you poem as well! I think you have a response on WT:APPLE. Airplaneman 01:48, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Quite the relief from
bonking the dumb!
Really, I have nothing to contribute to the actual discussion, except that it maybe saves time? That way you don't have to move it from the original page or have the original review deleted and archived, etc. That make sense? (Oh, and yes, I know my rhyme is terrible!) PrincessofLlyr royal court 02:10, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
We could just archive the whole of WikiPedia
That would save time if we get shut down by the media... --Jubileeclipman 02:15, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
LOL... but isn't Wikipedia already cached like pretty much all of the rest of the internet?
And don't forget database dumps, which might not have been considered yet?
Airplaneman 02:23, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Nice! I am still none the wiser, but your page is looking nicer --Jubileeclipman 02:31, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Archiving bot

Hi.

Re Talk:The Lightning Thief, you archived all the old sections, saying,

"bot doesn't seem to be working (scheduled for 3 months, an 11 month post with an answer is still here, archive everything".

For future reference, the bot was working, but by default it leaves the last 5 sections even if they're old enough to be archived, and doesn't archive less than 2 sections. So those 6 sections would have remained until at least 1 more new section was added. The defaults can be changed; see User:MiszaBot/config for details.

Table trouble

The table at Macintosh#Product line has a box of text in the middle of servers that I don't like. I think it would look better if the Mac mini box and Xserve box met halfway in the middle. This means making them three columns wide, and everything else 2 columns wide, but I can't figure out how to make it work. Can you? HereToHelp (talk to me) 23:12, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

I'm on it. Airplaneman 23:26, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Excellent, thank you. HereToHelp (talk to me) 20:38, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

A couple questions...

How often does assessment data update? For example, at WP:DERM:A, the table has not been updated since January 2010? Also, I want to provide various statistics at WP:DERM so people can analyze the project's growth and development. Currently we have a small section providing links to various data, but I wanted to know if you would help us expand that section to provide more types of interesting data that people can use? Any help creating regularly and automatically generated types of project data would be great. Regardless, thank you for your work on Wikipedia. ---kilbad (talk) 16:23, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Nice to meet you, kilbad :). The assessment table is still being updated, but from somewhere else. This edit in January points out the change: when WP 1.0 Bot underwent a code rewrite, updates were moved off-wiki. That's why the template isn't updated anymore. Updates now occur here, which is then transcluded onto the project table. As seen here, the bot copies assessment tables to the wiki from the toolserver (I think - in any case, it's off-wiki). I guess it's faster or less resource-intensive.
As for some interesting data... I'm not sure what to do - a lot of stuff I usually see on a statistics page is there already, such as an assessment link, new pages, page views, and image info. I suggest adding a Dermatology watchlist for dermatology-related changes. That might be interesting :). What ideas of interesting things do you have in mind? Airplaneman 21:19, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
So will the table at WP:DERM:A now update regularly and automatically? Also, with regard to a dermatology watch list, would it be possible to create a watchlist of all the articles tagged as part of the dermatology task force? Thanks again for your help! ---kilbad (talk) 02:24, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
The table has been automatically updating since the switch: the transcluded template is updated, not the table itself. That's why there haven't been any changes since January. I'm thinking that the dermatology watchlist watches all articles that are related to dermatology... I'm not sure how it's sorted. I also am not sure how to create a watchlist for all articles tagged as part of the task force - that may very well be what the special watchlist is, but I'm not 100% sure. I'll look into it tomorrow (it's getting late here...). Airplaneman 02:30, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. Yeah, I think a watchlist for all the pages tagged within the dermatology task force would be great. Also, is it possible to generate graphs in Wikipedia? ---kilbad (talk) 00:07, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

As far as I know, it must be done externally with a program/code of some sort or manually off-Wiki. I'm not sure it there's a tool on-Wiki for that (not sure it's built in the MediaWiki software that is used for Wikipedia). Although I know a bit about technical stuff, I think it's best you ask (and refer to this thread) on the technical village pump, where people who know more about these topics than me can help answer your questions :). some help needed

Hi, Airplaneman, sorry if I'm bothering you. I would like to ask a question regarding your post. Do the tools called TWINKLE and FRIENDLY work with the Vector skin? I am a violinist (talk) 11:16, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Yes: they are just in a different place. They appear under arrows, Twinkle has its own arrow (TW v ), Friendly is added to the other arrow along with "Move". They used to have tabs of their own for every function (e.g. a tab for "Warn" a tab for "Welcome", a tab for "TB", a tab for "XfD", a tab for...) It is much cleaner this way, IMO --Jubileeclipman 14:22, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Query

Dear Airplaneman:

Thanks for your help in interview section of my Talk page from about a month ago. I am still working on my class paper on Wikipedia and collaboration, and I was wondering if you could offer up a few comments about your work on PJTF. I deeply respect the work and commitment of the PJTF members and am inspired by you all to want to continue to patrol/add useful material to the pages. I am curious to know more about your own experience with PJTF: I'm sure that you've seen all the ups and downs of editing the PJ articles as a longstanding member of PJTF. I would like to ask if you could point out to me some of the highlights/lows/conflicts in PJTF or any other reasons why you continue to stay on guard, even when there are so many vandals out there (I can only imagine the frustration!) Can you help me out with even a few comments or remarks on your contributions to PJTF, and also how you've seen PJTF change or develop? Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Best,loafysam (talk) 21:05, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Well, it took me a few minutes to wrap my head around it, but it looked okay. Maybe you should post examples? Oh, and I liked the navbox at the bottom - did you make it? I was also planning a Unassessed Article Drive like the drive at WP:GOCE; I am too busy at WP:GOCE to do the task force.--moɳo 03:59, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
I might be able to help assist build the task force, though I am currently trying to become an SPI clerk. ~NerdyScienceDude () 04:05, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
I see. Sounds quite dull without CheckUser permissions. @Airman: I saw you have my unfinished story for the Signpost on your desk. Glad somebody kept it around; perhaps I'll adapt it into an essay!--moɳo 04:08, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I'm too young to get CU. Afterall, I do have to start somewhere. ~NerdyScienceDude () 04:25, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog!--moɳo 04:29, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

I believe CU's need some form of official identification for age verification. Also, it's never a bad thing to tell the truth. Just don't reveal too much, but don't lie. Airplaneman 22:42, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
WP:CHECK states Users authorized for CheckUser must be 18 years of age or older and have provided personal identification to the Wikimedia Foundation.--moɳo 01:00, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
Yup :). Airplaneman 01:36, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
I am working on MacBook Air right now. Wanna help?--moɳo 03:43, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I saw. I was also targeting a GAN some time this summer - it's great that you picked it up earlier! I'll help in June - busy at the moment. Right now, you can feast your eyes on Talk:MacBook Pro/GA3 if you haven't already for some insight on what needs improving for the MBA's article. Happy editing, Airplaneman 04:10, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

←Fetchcomms did a peer review; I will review the MBP GAN.--moɳo 18:59, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

Someone who might share interests with you?

Futureairman10 (talk · contribs). I've welcomed them. You both seem to have an interest in planes and such. Brambleclawx 19:15, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

Airplaneman, please don't adopt this user. You have enough adoptees.--moɳo 19:20, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
And who are you to tell me what to do? I can think for myself, thanks... Airplaneman 19:58, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
I'm not telling him to adopt, just telling him there might be someone he could work with, maybe help a little bit. Brambleclawx 19:25, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
Oh, and I also replaced the old sign button with the new one on your welcome template, since newcomers likely are using default skin. Feel free to revert it if you wish. Brambleclawx 19:30, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
Yes, thanks! I was too lazy to do it myself anytime soon ;). Airplaneman 19:58, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
I like my welcome template as it actually says something.--moɳo 20:03, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
I'm a bit skeptical about the "Play in your user area. For example, create User:Mono/test." considering you MFD'd Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:NerdyScienceDude/Vandalism space (2nd nomination). Otherwise, looks good — might clog up the brower page a bit if the screen resolution isn't high, but other than that, the dashes need fixing :). Airplaneman 20:15, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict)(edit conflict)Hey, what do you know, so does mine :). Amazing! That's why I constructed mine as well :D. Airplaneman 20:09, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

←@Airman: I wasn't telling you what to do; I asked you not to.--moɳo 20:04, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

Nice welcome template, Mono! Brambleclawx 20:07, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict)Why would you, though (I'm just curious)? I am fully capable to decide what is "too much" or "enough". Airplaneman 20:09, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

Supernatural FA

Hey. A while back, you copyedited the Supernatural article Fresh Blood. Just letting you know that it is up for FA here. Ωphois 05:16, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

Cool; I'll keep an eye on it. Airplaneman 21:46, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

Junk at talkpages of Percy Jackson

I noticed your edit at Talk:Luke Castellan; you can use the template {{notforum}} on the talkpage and WP:TW has a warning template ({{uw-chat1}}). I was rather surprised; a user can get blocked this way.--mono 00:10, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

I'm aware; since the message my Mktsay was there already, I didn't feel the need to replace it, as both do the same thing. Airplaneman 00:14, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
My main point was warn the user, so we can block 'em.--mono 00:17, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
OK; I have found that most users such as the one in question (who has made one edit) are usually just a hit and run. If the vandalize again, I'll be compelled to skip to a level two or three warning. Warning them now might provoke them, which I find unnecessary given the fact that they have made one edit that is not severe (i.e., a BLP violation). Airplaneman 00:48, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
Warning is supposed to deter them, but who knows. And it's worse to want to block anyone other than blatant, single purpose vandals. Like me FREAKIN SPAMMIN UR TALKPAGEOMGNOWAI. My bad, fetch·comms 01:29, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
Good point :). Airplaneman 01:44, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
YEAH RWEAL WOOD POINT ME SAYZ!--mono 01:48, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
