Kaavya Viswanathan[edit]

Hi there! I just wanted to let you know that when you ran the spellcheck on Kaavya Viswanathan, there were edits made between when you must have copied the latest version of the article to a spell-checking word processor, and when you pasted it back in. What happened was you inadvertently deleted those edits, because the version of the article you were spell-checking didn't have them in it yet. Irish-singer-stub[edit]

Hi, I noticed on recent changes that you created a new stub template, unfortunatly I can not see that you have proposed it at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, as all new stub templates should be, usually before they are created. I'm guessing that you didn't know that, it's ok, as long as you do it now. It might be smart to make an estimate of how many articles that would use the template, 60 articles is usually the cut-off-point. Happy editing. --Eivindt@c 01:03, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really know how many articles it might entail for this category. I can't imagine more than sixty.

I thought that the cutoff meant that if there were more than 60, it'd be disallowed. I could easily see upwards of that with diligent searching through the database.
Do'h! Actually my bad, should've been more clear. There's another problem, it should be renamed {{Ireland-singer-stub}}, so it's more in line with our other stubs. Some odd edits you've made[edit]

Why have you continued to edit What is...Cliff Clavin? (Cheers), changing a quote that includes the phrase "I lost on Jeopardy" to link to the song, and you say you are fixing a ref. Please do not add nonsense to Wikipedia. It is considered vandalism. If you would like to experiment, use the sandbox. Thank you. References are external websites/books/articles/etc that prove a certain fact is true (Joe Shmoe was born MONTH DAY, YEAR with a reference to an article asserting that birthday). What you are doing is linking a phrase to a song with the same name. That is excess linking, and vandalism now that you have been told what it is. Please cease and desist. Incorrect. At most and only if you can find a source to reference the statement it's maybe worth a mention in the trivia section. However, Cliff Clavin saying the phrase off-handedly does not warrant a direct link to a Weird Al song. He was not singing nor referring to the song. Stop, it is vandalism. New templates[edit]

To start a new template, just start a new file, but with the prefix Template:, fx User:UBX/TTH. Or you could start a new file in your userspace fx User:Akcarver/TTH and then use {{User:Akcarver/TTH}} on your userpage, I would recommend the latter as some Wikipedians frown upon the usage of Template namespace for non-editing related issues, such as stating your favorite bands, opinions and similar, and might list it for deletion. What the above said. Remember that in order for a Template to work and be hunky-dory it needs to be in the template namespace (Not "Joe" but "Template:Joe"). Although it is not exactly the same - the design elemnts are consistent with the rest of wikipedia. There are those that agree with you see Template talk:Infobox Pope#Uglybox. However, I would prefer we stay with the prior style which has been in use for quite some time. I am also of your opinion. But we should discuss it also with User:Jmabel, who has compiled the table of winners lately. It would be good to find all winners in one page. Some big film awards have separate years in separate pages with year navigation, plus pages with each award (say, Best Director) for all years. For SIFF, I think we would end up with many little stub-like articles like this. One idea is if we break the over-compacted table in several tables under GSP award. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Usage of {{Cquote}}[edit]

Sorry for the late response. You'll have to look at the usage guide for {{Cquote}}. The template is intended for pull-quotes. WP:MOS#Quotations recommends the HTML <blockquote> element, but the template {{Quote}} is equally effective. Misuse of {{Cquote}} is a pet peeve of mine on the wiki. Invitation to Meetup/Seattle6, a focus group[edit]

Hello. I'm part of a research group at the University of Washington (Seattle campus), and my group is reaching out to Wikipedians in the Puget Sound area. We're hosting a focus group designed to gather information on what Wikipedians would like to know about each other when interacting on Wikipedia. Our end goal is to create an embedded application that helps people quickly know more about others' history and activity on Wikipedia, and we feel our design will be much more useful if it's based on insights of users like you.

I had found it under the wikitag Happy Feet 2, and I changed the name so that it would match the movie poster and trailer, which both show the title as Happy Feet Two. If you need help moving a page over a redirect, you should really go to Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests to have an administrator move the page over for you. Despite its wide reach, content on Wikipedia suffers from the bias of its editors: white, technically inclined, English-speaking men that live in developed, majority-Christian countries. This represents an alarming absence of voices in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.

In an effort to change this, the Jake is organizing a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on Saturday, May 6th, 1 - 5 pm. Our mission is to bring together diverse communities to participate in Wikipedia editing, and improve its coverage of queer people and women of color in the arts.

We will provide childcare, snacks, and tutorials for the beginner editor.

Bring your laptop, power-cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. No previous Wikipedia experience required!

Wikipedia is one of the most wide-reaching repositories of shared knowledge, yet a 2011 survey found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female, suggesting an alarming absence of voices. What and how information is shared is skewed by this gender disparity. To help change this, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery is organizing a quarterly series of Edit-a-thons to improve Wikipedia's coverage of womxn artists of color.

This Saturday afternoon's gathering will focus on creating, editing, updating, and expanding pages for womxn artists from Latin America and the Caribbean. The Edit-a-thon will feature a talk by Dan Paz, Lecturer in the UW School of Art + Art History + Design, an artist, and an educator who explores the labor of digital imaging production as a collaborative site where the intersections of the image-idea and lived experience are produced and contested. Through videos, photography, and sculptural projects that query the ability of documentary processes to be manipulated—to be multiplied and replicated, stopped and started, rewound and advanced—Dan works within the impossibilities of absolute replication to question the very ability of the image to truly represent.

Everyone is welcome. Access to UW WiFi will be provided for non-UW affiliated participants. All you need to bring is your laptop, power cord, and ideas. No previous Wikipedia experience required! Wikipedia Day celebrates the anniversary of the founding of Wikipedia. This year in Seattle, Cascadia Wikimedians' celebration of Wikipedia Day will focus on a different closely related project: Wikimedia Commons, which (among other things) functions as the media repository for Wikipedia. When you see a photo or map in Wikipedia, or hear an audio clip, etc., it usually is hosted on Wikimedia Commons and "transcluded" into Wikipedia.

Wikimedia Commons is a mix of users' own works and curated third-party content, either public domain or free-licensed. Our event is a hands-on workshop in curating third-party content, mostly early 20th-century photos of Seattle and other West Coast locations.

Currently, Wikimedia Commons has two intersecting sets of older photos, one from the Asahel Curtis Photo Company and the other a more general set of Seattle images. At this meetup, we will celebrate the 18th anniversary of Wikipedia by further curating these images by the creation and addition of categories, adding ImageNotes where useful, linking other versions of the same photo, enhancing the descriptions, and identifying and correcting errors. User:Jmabel has already categorized over 1000 images and corrected several hundred wrong dates, misidentified buildings, and etc., but there is much more to be done.

Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors were women.   • The ‘Big Four,’ or the four white male artists that comprised the Northwest School, were the subject of the famous 1953 LIFE magazine article, "Mystic Painters of the Northwest": Guy Anderson, Kenneth Callahan, Morris Graves, and Mark Tobey. Each of these artists have robust pages on Wikipedia. However, key female-identifying artists from this time such as Margaret Gove Cafferman — who Mark Tobey cited as an influence on his work — lack Wikipedia articles.[* 1] To help address the imbalance of representation on Wikipedia, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery is organizing an Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon focused on female-identifying artists of the Pacific Northwest.
  • Childcare, snacks from local businesses, editing tutorials, books, and lists of artists will be provided.
  • All you need to bring is your laptop, power cord, and ideas. No previous Wikipedia experience required!
  • Everyone is welcome. Access to UW wifi will be provided for non-UW affiliated participants.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
