Jamie O'Neill[edit]

Amitch: I'm new to editing the site. Where can I contribute to conversation without editing pages, sir? I'm curious. It's quite unfortunate, mate, that I have to jump through hoops to express my admiration for a literary genius. Do you understand that? Yes, this is encyclopedic, and it must be 'empirical', right? But maybe some people should jump off their high-horses and be real humans. Wikipedia is an eternal first draft. You can never make it concise or authoritative. Please, get over it. While you're busy reverting obscure pages, you could be out and about with your numerous mates near Sydney. It's absurd to be stuck in this postmodern escapist retreat known as the Internet. This isn't the Englightenment, you can't create a truly free and truly authoritative encyclopedia all at once. Why the sour grapes? I'm sure this will reverted as soon as possible, but you yourself will remember it. Also, don't forget about Sarah. (This unsigned comment was added on 21:33, 17 November 2006 by user 68.43.89.134).

Edit: Thanks for the timely response, Amitch. Much appreciated. I have contributed several 'meaningful' edits to Wikipedia, especially in the sense that many of the articles have awful spelling and grammar. Also, many of the articles lack proper sources and unfortunately cannot be used for scholarly works. Some day, perhaps, the site WILL be accepted as a true encyclopedia. For the time being, I will treat it as a referral source to real information. Thank you again for your timely response. It will be duly noted, indeed.

Mertonville Hotel, Balmain[edit]

I have placed a speedy delete request on the above article. If you intend to add to the article please comment on the talk page.LessHeard vanU 01:12, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Mertonville Hotel, Balmain, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. —Pilotguy (ptt) 02:19, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Confused[edit]

I keep getting this message that my dial-up's IP address inserted some form of vandalism to the First Church of Satan or something. Since I am on dial-up, who knows who else connected via Yahoo!'s AT&T/SBC Global's access numbers in the Pahrump, NV, area, which is a heavily Christian-Republican region of the State of Nevada. If somebody else who has used the SBC Global service in the are did the vandalism, go seek them, but not me. I don't have any control over SBC Global's assignment of IP address per computer that connects.

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Leichhardt Bicycle User Group, New South Wales, by Vegaswikian, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Leichhardt Bicycle User Group, New South Wales seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Leichhardt Bicycle User Group, New South Wales, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Leichhardt Bicycle User Group, New South Wales itself. Replaceable fair use Image:Hazelwood Power Station 1.JPG[edit]

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Hazelwood Power Station 1.JPG. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Carl (CBM · talk) 23:05, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

List of pubs in Rozelle[edit]

A {{prod}} template has been added to the article List of pubs in Rozelle, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you endorse deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please tag it with {{db-author}}. Longhair\talk 23:05, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of List of pubs in Rozelle[edit]

List of pubs in Rozelle, an article you created, has been nominated for deletion. We appreciate your contributions. However, an editor does not feel that List of pubs in Rozelle satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of pubs in Rozelle and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of List of pubs in Rozelle during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. Pascal.Tesson 06:10, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pub deletions[edit]

A lot of your work on historic pubs seems to have been, or be going through the process of, being deleted, which is a shame since they were pretty well-referenced (shame no page number citations but at least there were some book sources) and several were nicely illustrated too. I contested a bunch of prods but I'm not sure if they'll just end up being put through AFD; several others have been deleted already. Purgatorio 15:59, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Incredible shrinking fireman screen1.gif[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Incredible shrinking fireman screen1.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 23:27, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Balmain Reservoir Picture 1.jpg}[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:Balmain Reservoir Picture 1.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Environment Victoria Logo.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Environment Victoria Logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 03:05, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Balmain Power Station Picture 5.JPG[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Balmain Power Station Picture 5.JPG. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. File source problem with File:Welcome Hotel Rozelle c1930.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Welcome Hotel Rozelle c1930.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 09:45, 2 May 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 18:32, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article Rob Roy Hotel (Balmain) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Notability queried since 2008

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Invitation[edit]

There is a backstage pass coming up to be followed by an editathon in the State Library of New South Wales on 23 November. This is the first time that an Australian cultural institution has opened its doors to us in this way and will be a special opportunity because the Library is providing: one of its best rooms; its expert curators (along with their expertise and their white gloves); a newly launched website (containing new resources); and of course, items from its collection (including rare and usually unavailable material) which we can look at, learn from, and use, to improve WP articles. For example, on the chosen topic (Australia and WWI), the Library holds many diaries and manuscripts from the period.

As you can see from the Library's project page, they have connected this editathon with their own work. They have already set out a wide range of resources to make things easier for us. Please sign up on the editathon project page if you can participate either online or in person with other Wikipedians. Hope to see you there!
