"A packaging recycling classification system, that is based on the balance between a product's local kerbside recyclable and non-recyclable components. This ratio or difference is used as the basis for a grading system (PAC, abbreviation of PullApart Code), a survey and pressure concept, it was invented by Michael Butler of Dawlish, England, in 2005, and is operated for free. This system considers the environment and consumers to be of uppermost importance and seeks to modify packaging and recycling to serve these two masters. This disassembly of packaging, is also used locally, by the public, to freely determine and confirm which parts should go where, for their local authority installed, recycling bin refuse collection systems₁. Based on PullApart's current Teignbridge (2009), survey₂ of over 2000 products (constantly updated), just 3% of these are ideally suited for kerbside recycling, and broadly speaking a further 30% are good, with the rest failing. The sample area, Teignbridge, and therefore Teignbridge District Council₃, has a current recycling rate₄ of 56% (2008/2009), (by weight). PullApart₅ is consider by the Green Apple Awards₆ to be of “Environmental Best Practice”, and can be applied to any other council area that uses similar refuse collection systems."
