Your interest in the US Supreme Court[edit]
Hi, I read your userpage recently because you signed my guestbook :) I noticed that you stated you have an interest in the US Supreme Court? I've been trying to get more involved with more content creation lately, especially in regards to the religion I grew up in. There's a lot of interesting legal litigation involving Jehovah's Witnesses. Two US-specific articles are the West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette and Watchtower Bible & Tract Society of New York, Inc. v. Village of Stratton. I'm also really interested in Canadian cases like Roncarelli v Duplessis and Saumur v Quebec (City of). I have 9 books about Jehovah's Witnesses (non-primary sources and reliable authors) and I want to read all of them to try and improve JW-related content. But I admit that the whole concept of reading a ton and stopping whenever something is relevant is somewhat intimidating. Do you have any advice in regards to trying to do that kind of research? - Hello! Supreme Court litigation is a good area to get into content creation with. It's not always easy, but WP:SCOTUS is always in need of help. Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire is also a pretty good First Amendment case that somewhat involves Jehovah's Witnesses, if you're interested. For JW-related cases, those nine books will really come in handy. If they're available on Google Books, you can try using the search feature to find relevant passages that you can then locate in your physical copies. For SCOTUS-related articles, the best secondary sources are found on HeinOnline through the Wikipedia Library. The best primary source is usually the case opinion itself. In Watchtower Bible, the SCOTUS opinion by Stevens is a great resource, but so are the case opinions by the Southern District of Ohio and the 6th Circuit.
- It also helps to break the research into sections. With legal articles, you can research the background, then the holding, then the impact; these are the three major sections of litigation articles (sometimes with the bigger cases an analysis section is offered between the holding and impact). But if it's intimidating to think of it as research, don't think of it as research! Easier said than done, I'm sure, but if this is a topic you're interested in, it's okay to read it for leisure first and skim it for research second. On your second read, you'll be more familiar with what to look for and what's relevant to include on Wikipedia. Hope this helps! 〜 Askarion ✉ 13:30, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
