Page protection request

Hi Bagumba. Could you page protect 2010–11 Georgia Bulldogs basketball team so that IPs are no longer allowed to edit it? A long while back I removed a section called "Quality of officials" because it's clearly WP:UNDUE weight on a very biased facet of that season. At the time I removed it, I had no idea that another editor had already tried removing it several times, but some stupid anon with an agenda keeps re-inserting it. The section violates UNDUE, NPOV, and certainly doesn't belong in the article. It's tiresome to keep seeing notifications that my legitimate removal has been reverted by a disgruntled Georgia fan or player. Thanks. Jrcla2 (talk) 13:39, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

Since there is only 1 IP involved currently, common practice is to not protect against all IPs. My suggestion would be to start a discussion on the article talk page about your concerns, and notify the IP of the discussion. Hi Bagumba,

Do you think that "child" categories like 17th-century Italian mathematicians would be better to place than a parent categories such as Italian mathematicians? Generally, its better to use the most specific cat that is applicable. If your question is if the 17th century cat should be created (not sure), Im not a cat expert, and there all sorts of rules on how detailed they can be.—Bagumba (talk) 03:31, 15 March 2014 (UTC)

Protected for a week, and warned the new IP about warring. While its likely the same user, you should notify IPs of discussions on their talk page. What are you thinking you are here, a big brother? I am highly aware I was involved by him in edit war. Because of that I wrote him on his talk page to stop with these edits, he hasn't listen. Then I stopped, wrote on NBA wikiproject about issue, and to another respected editor. I am just so sick of these Balkan nationalists here on wikipedia, who just like this user, don't respect others work and putting insanely stupid tabloid references, or make edits based on people's tattoos, and other [stuff]. Don't tell me what is war edit and don't be rude and warn me with some bans and stuff. My 6t+ edits represents me as valid contributor, mainly of European-based basketball articles. Maybe I've gone a bit too far with first sentence, you kind of pissed me off a bit in post to my tp. But do you understand the point of my writing? Just read which references he provided on his tp, in edits, and you will see what is more valid. His contributions or mine. If you take a closer look, his whole contributions are based on some kind of Serbo-Croatian "war", wanting to say he in my opinion is a bit patriot/nationalist, can't make clear line in his case between these two. Wikipedia:Verifiability states that "verifiability means that people reading and editing the encyclopedia can check that the information comes from a reliable source." A birth certificate would not be readily available for others to verify. Also, a birth certificate is considered a primary source. Per Wikipedia policy at Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons#Avoid_misuse_of_primary_sources, editors should "Exercise extreme caution in using primary sources." Perhaps you could identify secondary sources such as a newspaper article or a book e.g. team media guide, that reports the births or Mr. Duncan's children? —Bagumba (talk) 01:08, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Would you consider temporarily semi-protecting Andray Blatche? This citizenship thing has got out of hand. Tbh, should Filipino even be listed? He technically now has dual nationality, but what has happened with previous cases like this (if any)? Was the newly acquired citizenship added i.e. "American-Filipino"? As he seems to have both American and Filipino citizenship, how it is presented is a content issue, and not suitable for protection. I'd recommend dispute resolution, such as starting a discussion. Ty Cobb Batting Average Dispute

Perhaps the page for Barry Bonds could be semi-protected. Bonds is not active, so many comments from non-registered users much are vandalism. Unless something major happens with Bonds, it will not really help Wikipedia to allow random users with no account (and thus no fear of prosecution) to make changes. Unfortunately, not all protected pages consistently show the lock symbol, if that is what you are referring to. A definitive way to see the protection (if any) for a page is to click on "View History", then click on "View logs for this page". 2014 NBA draft

Bagumba - Any way we could restrict editing except for autoconfirmed users? Every year there is "funny" vandalism leading up the draft, then there is total chaos on the article on draft night as everyone wants to update the picks or goof off. Perhaps more palatable - could you (or another admin) keep an eye on the article and restrict it if (when) this comes to pass either on draft night or before? It's the same story every year. Zach LaVine

Bagumbo, all I changed was his height and weight nothing else. @TheBoss2008: The difficult part is that without a citation or a note in the edit summary, an edit that conflicts with another reliable source might sometimes be mistakenly considered inaccurate. When there are conflicting sources on an NBA player's height, the convention is usually to use what is listed on their NBA.com profile. Afterall, Template:Infobox basketball biography displays it as "Listed height", which accounts for the cases it might differ from their actual height. If there is consensus, a note can be placed in the "height_footnote" parameter of the template. Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 17:14, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Zach LaVine Edit

Bagumba,

I am not trying to start an editing war over Zach LaVine. Just bc NBA.com says 6'5" doesn't mean it's rights. This was his height freshman year at UCLA, he has since grown. Don't get me wrong NBA.com is a great source but he's a Rookie just moving up to the NBA. His combine stats were a measured height w/o shoes of 6'4.5" and 6'5.75 w shoes on. I've seen this on paper from the combine and numerous workouts he had w teams along w different websites. Like I said I'm not trying to start an edit war but for someone whose seen the results I'm just trying to make sure they are right. Even NBA.com draft profile http://www.nba.com/draft/2014/prospects/zach_lavine?ls=iref:nba:draft:tracker has him listed that way, hey just haven't changed it yet. Sorry to create a commotion I didn't know filling out the right statistics would cause people to freak out just trying to list correct biography.

I'm sure you're trying to improve Wikipedia, and dealing with conflicting information is tricky because people can have different opinions on which source is "more right" than others. I'm not sure if you saw my earlier suggestions to you above about how conflicting heights can be handled. Regardless of which way you think it should be presented, it is never acceptable to resolve disputes by reinserting the same information repeatedly. @Editorofthewiki: Also, they look more to be unused as opposed to "broken". That style of footnotes used (defining them in a separate section than where they are referenced) is hard to maintain e.g in this case when they were cut/pasted from another unrelated article and its tedious to find which are not needed. I do try to make sure my edits have a net positive effect; in this case, cutting out wrong information while adding to the existing unused ref problem seemed to be a fair trade off.—Bagumba (talk) 00:09, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Chandler Parsons, restricted free agent

Hey, Bagumba. Can you put the Chandler Parsons article on your watch list? Parsons is a restricted free agent, who just signed a letter of intent with the Dallas Mavericks late yesterday. Pursuant to the NBA rules on restricted free agency, his former team, the Houston Rockets, now has 72 hours to match or decline the Mavericks' offer to Parsons. The Rockets have already indicated publicly that they intend to do so. In the mean time, the usual crowd of IPs and newly registered users is doing their crazy dance on the article, changing this BLP article to read that Parsons is already a member of the Mavericks without any supporting sources. GoPhightins semi-protected the page last night, but the problems have continued overnight and this morning with registered users continuing to make such changes to the article and the Mavericks roster template. I already used my three reverts, with edit summary explanations, on the article yesterday evening. Can you add this one to your list? It's going to be a problem until the 72 hours expires. . . .       • Template:Dallas Mavericks roster: all of the players on the list have a link to their college, not their college team. In a player bio, I always link to both the player's college and the college team in the article; as you know, in text, I like to introduce the college team by stating the college's fully name first.           • That would be a matter of changing the template coding, right? I'm a little out of date, but Freitjes and Technical 13 both used to do template coding work. If your looking for an example, Template:Infobox college football player converts "Florida Gators" in the "college" template parameter into a piped link to "Florida Gators football," as well as tying the team colors to the infobox display. The way we handle sports transactions is to wait for a definitive announcement from an identified representative of the player or team that the contract is official. Those references you provided are anonymous sources. Sure the deal is likely to happen, but as an encyclopedia we don't need to be in a hurry to report things that are not fully confirmed yet. Gotta say, if we can't take being listed on the official roster on the official site (when he wasn't there last year) then we are painting FAR too fine a distinction for WP - one that makes no sense in real world terms. The Cavs site has a landing page welcoming LBJ back that you get before you can get to the content - it's official. Right now the article looks ridiculous with "Pending contract" sitting at the top and already showing him with the Cavs in text and club history reflecting it.
