NO, it is not. For exactly the reasons detailed at VPP. That is why doing what you are doing was unanimously opposed. The links that you are changing are exactly what that discussion was covering. The one of two examples in the discussion was web.archive.org.

The point is that having protocol relative links lets the user continue with using https:, if that is how they are reading Wikipedia. If they are reading Wikipedia in http: protocol, they get the link as http:. What you are doing is breaking all those links for readers viewing Wikipedia from situations which block https: (e.g. ~~the entirety of China and~~ various businesses). Leaving a protocol relative link results in the viewer being able to continue to read using either http: or https: protocol. This is one reason why both Wikipedia and web.archive.org provide both.

It would only be appropriate to change the links to https:, as you are doing, if the site was only available in the https: protocol.

Plus, could you please give me source for the notion that HTTPS is "blocked in the entirety of China"? From a brief look, it appears that on the subject of HTTPS being blocked entirely in China I have inflated an argument from VPP, which appears to have correctly copied the original, much less broad, statement from the link (activate HTTPS by default), which you provided in your initial post there requesting clarification on using HTTPS links. I have unintentionally inflated what was actually stated. What was actually stated was that China completely blocks HTTPS to Wikipedia.

I hate it when other people inflate arguments like that without checking facts. I am quite pissed at myself for doing so. A brief search shows that some websites have switched to HTTPS in order to prevent China from implementing specific subject/topic oriented blocks. Thank you very much for calling this to my attention. I have changed/corrected it the one other place I have repeated it. I have also marked it as deleted above, as I believe in being aggressive about not propagating such memes.

However, that does not change the other places where HTTPS is banned (some businesses), nor the other arguments against switching all available links to https. More importantly, it does not change that the consensus was to use protocol relative links.

Quite frankly, I was surprised when I realized you were the person who originally asked on VPP about switching links to HTTPS. I was very surprised that after asking about it, and even mentioning protocol relative links in your initial post, that you then proceeded to implement the exact opposite of the consensus that was unanimously shown on that page.

Note: The link that you provided regarding Wikipedia switching to HTTPS states that it was to have occurred on August 28, 2013. It appears to have occurred already for logged in users.

As to what sense it makes for us to use protocol relative links: A) see the arguments at VPP. From my point of view, the most telling are: 1) changing our external links to HTTPS, or HTTP, inappropriately imposes a choice we have made to use HTTPS upon the reader when the ability to allow the reader to, either knowingly or unknowingly, have the option to use either protocol is trivial on our part (by using protocol relative links rather than forcing HTTP or HTTPS). 2) HTTPS is blocked/broken/negative for the reader in some contexts. As of your edits yesterday and today using the edit summary "clean up; http->https or pr-URI, per VPP using AWB" (or similar), you are continuing to change links from HTTP to HTTPS where both are available (a brief look showed this for at least //www.youtube.com/).

It is possible that continuing to make these changes is an error in your configuration of AWB. Thus, I wanted to double check: Do you intend to continue making these changes, from HTTP to HTTPS on sites that support both, in spite of the fact that doing so is against the consensus on VPP (that discussion is now closed)? FYI: A discussion has been opened at VPP regarding how we implement using protocol relative links. The person who opened the discussion made the point that using PR links currently becomes broken if the user saves the webpage for offline viewing. However, I just checked in Firefox, the Wikipedia App and IE. All three properly handled saving pages with protocol relative links. The links were translated to the protocol in use at the time of saving the page [Firefox and IE file contents verified, content of the actual file not verified with the Wikipedia App on Android, but clicking on the link was verified; only saving while using HTTPS was verified.]. Freedom House references

Hi, Bender. Can you look at two of the references that you adjusted at Freedom House today? The conversion from doi to full ref didn't happen "within minutes". Redirect "placeholders" for season articles

Hi Bender. I am politely requesting that you refrain from creating anymore "placeholders" (as you call them) for college basketball and college football season articles. These links do nothing to serve navigation for anybody, and in fact only confuse readers as to why a redirect would even exist. Examples include, but I'm sure are not limited to:

1976–77 Indiana State Sycamores men's basketball team
1977–78 Indiana State Sycamores men's basketball team
1994–95 Michigan State Spartans men's basketball team
1990 Georgia Southern Eagles football team (I had to overwrite the redirect with actual content because why on earth would a national championship season not be a standalone article)

I'm sure I'll find more as I go along, but please, please, please stop making these. Now there are blue links on {{Michigan State Spartans men's basketball navbox}} and {{Indiana State Sycamores men's basketball navbox}} where there should be red links. Readers will click on those seasons thinking they'll find more out about that year specifically, only to be redirected to the team's main article for no explanation at all. Hi, I was reading up on climate, and finding the article on "Bond event" I was surprised to find it hadn't the obvious hallmarks of most climate articles of being edited to fit a certain green propaganda event. The usual sign of this is the contribution of a certain William M. Connolley.

Mishae, what Bender's edit did was to enable "protocol relative links". If a person is using https for Wikipedia, they will use https for the archive link. If a person is using http for Wikipedia, they will use http for the archive link. Some people are unable to use https, thus this allows the archive link to work for everybody and have security enabled for those who choose security. Personally, I wish there was a better solution. Mishae, connection speeds are slower as there is some additional overhead required to make a secure connection. But, we are talking milliseconds, so it shouldn't be noticeable. I personally use HTTPS Everywhere browser addon to use https as default on as many sites as possible.

implementing https etc.

Hi Bender235. A lot of your changes to do with Wayback/https in George Harrison song articles have appeared on my Watchlist. There's a slight problem in that, while English-style date formatting (dmy) is favoured in all these Beatles-related articles, your changes (eg here) are consistently rendered in US-style mdy. I think this needs addressing, because obviously it looks as though each article is stylistically inconsistent. Is there anything you can do, or that can be done, to remedy this? Needlessly Switching Between Link Variants

I've noticed that you've been making near bot level edits that to me seem along the same lines of whitespace formatting or switching between English variants. These seem unnecessary edits - they do not change or improve the article and therefore do not warrant an edit. Also, were the changes worthy of an edit, it would be better suited to a bot (flag), that can edit at these high rates without spamming the RC. Yeah, well, the latter is what I already do. I don't only change plain YouTube links to templates, but also plain Internet Archive links to {{Wayback}}. And that's all there is. No other links are meant to be protocol-relative. And the good thing about templates is, that we can decide on how to code the link later, at some central place. So what I do is by no means "along the same lines of formatting whitespace". I implement valid templates, which is a clear improvement over plain links (which, by the way, cannot be done by bot). Hello. I was asked to assist in this matter. The conclusion I've come to is that although the edits themselves are fine—that the {{YouTube}} template is approved for widespread use—the issue is that it's being done through AWB and not an account with a bot flag. This is an issue because the mass quantity of these edits causes people's watchlists to swell with your edits, while this would not happen with a bot-flagged account. You argue that bots would not be capable of this. My first impression is that it's actually really trivial to code a bot to do this, but I am wondering if you have any additional insight on this. Otherwise, I would recommend either coding a bot and going through the bot request for approval process, or to go to Wikipedia:Bot requests to request that someone do this. Even if it were, which I emphasize again that it was not in this case, it would still probably meet "reliable source" status, but I could see a squabble happening over that, perhaps. One can always read a thesis or dissertation at the university at which it was submitted. Additionally, ProQuest has a "Dissertation Express" through which dissertations and many theses may be purchased. http://dissexpress.umi.com/dxweb/search.html is the URL, for the record. It only occurred when the user explicitly changed the default save format to one where the intended functionality resulted in breaking all Wikipedia links (most are protocol relative). The non-default format chosen is intended for use when an exact copy of the HTML, not a functional copy of the page, is desired. This is usually done for debugging or development. A functional copy of a page requires much more than just an exact copy of the HTML which is why it is not the default for saving in any environment tested (IE8+, Firefox, SeaMonkey, Chrome, Wikipedia App). If you're going to continue editing against consensus, can I at least build you a tool to do it in the best possible way? I already have a script that checks each webpage and replaces with PRLs if the HTTP/HTTPS pages are the same or very similar. Citation templates

Hi Bender, just a reminder, re: this, that citation templates shoudn't be added to articles that already use a consistent style. See WP:CITEVAR. The added problem with these templates is that you can't see the URL in edit mode, so if you're checking sources while editing they can be a bit of a nuisance. They're templates replacing manual references, and it's not at all a corner case, Bender. I copy-paste URLs all the time when I'm copy-editing and checking sources. When they're not there, it means I have to come out of edit mode and click on the link. It's an extra step, and when you're copy-editing you might have to do it many times in a row, so being able to see URLs in edit mode is very helpful. SlimVirgin ^(talk) 17:07, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

I know what to do with [[New York City]] in edit mode if I want to read the article: I copy-paste it into the search box. Similarly, I know what to do with a URL if I want to read a source: I copy-paste it into my address bar. But with these templates, I have no idea what to do in edit mode to find the source, so I have to come out of edit mode and click.

If your aim is to add https to the URL, it would make sense just to do that. With the templates, the cost is that you lose information in edit mode, but there doesn't seem to be a benefit to offset that cost. SlimVirgin ^(talk) 17:38, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

{{Wayback}} makes wholesale changes to the URIs much easier. For instances, if Internet Archive switches links from http://wayback.archive.org/ to http://web.archive.org/ (which they did, btw). Also, the template automatically extracts the time when a page was archived. Most users forget to do that when they just add [http://web.archive.org/web/201401010312321/http://example.com]. That's two benefits that (in my mind) outweight the "hassle" of not being able to copy-paste the URI in the browser address bar. --bender235 (talk) 17:46, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Well, in this particular edit I just replaced a raw link with {{YouTube}}. A side effect of this is that it links to https://www.youtube.com instead of http://www.youtube.com, which means the HTTP connection is encrypted and thus not vulnerable to eavesdropping, such as this.

How can you do this, too? For starters, you could just implement {{YouTube}} where ever you find a raw YouTube link. Or, you do it the way I did, which as scanning a large number of articles with AWB. --bender235 (talk) 22:41, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

As someone who has edited the article Asian American this year, I am seeking your input on a proposed change to remove a reference to epicanthic eyefolds. This topic has prompted discussion in 2009, 2010 and most recently in 2013.

Jack Hargreaves

Dear Bender235. You've changed a possessive version of Hargreaves in this article from Hargreaves' to Hargreaves's. How to indicate a possessive in names (and nouns) ending in 's' is debated among grammarians. Some say James's, others James'; ditto Charles' or Charles's. Most say both are correct, but I have never heard or read of anyone saying or writing Hargreaves's. I suggest there is enough ambiguity on this subject for it to be reasonable to revert to Hargreaves' as common usage. If you're keen to keep Hargreaves's go ahead. It is not incorrect! You both do not know the literature and history. In anwiki even no article about this man: Zhirov N.F. But he is the founder of atlantology as a science. He wrote two fundamental works of Atlantis (1957 and 1964). The fact that translation from Russian made later nothing says.

Deletion of Universal Ethics

Hi Bender 235, why did you delete the paragraph “Universal Ethics” in the Golden Rule article (Edition Sept.13, 2014) ? The modification of the Golden Rule it contains is fundamental since it is avoiding the contradictions and flaws of the other forms of the Golden Rule cited and criticized in the article (e.g. empathy as a prerequisite). Moreover, whereas the Golden Rule is explained in Global Ethics, Bahá'í Ethics, Buddhism Ethics etc. etc., the Universal Ethics concept is entirely absent. Per this edit, thanks for doing it by hand instead of via AWB. Normally I wouldn't mind AWB's source reshuffling, but in articles whose sources are formatted like they are here it is important to keep the alphabetization intact so later editors can easily locate the reffed sources. It's supposed to be a more user-friendly way of sourcing since the position of the sources in the raw wikicode more closely mirrors the position of the sources in academic papers. New article help

I'm rather new to creating wikipedia articles from scratch. I usually just try to add to existing articles and patrol for vandalism/bias in stories. I'm wanting to write some articles about entertainment in Las Vegas and want to do so in compliance of wikipedia's rules and regulations so that they are not biased and factually accurate. I'm a bit intimidated though when it comes to referencing sources (not that there aren't any in the copy of the articles I'd like to submit, rather, I'm not sure how to best attribute them and format those attributions into wikipedia.) Would you be willing to help me develop some articles and properly build them so as to comply with wikipedia's standards? I really appreciate your time and attention!!!

Hi Bender, I am new to this, older, and not a techie. Please forgive me if my communication format does not comply with your requested format. I am wondering why, on Stanley Fischer's Bio, his Vice Chairmanship at Citigroup 2002-2005 was left out of the bio listing, between his IMF service and the Bank of Isreal. There is an obvious gap between 2001 and 2005 but his Citigroup job was identified 2002-2005 in the text under banking career. I think this should be included in the Bio chronology as this is part of his career, jobs, and very important. Given the professional revolving door between the banking industry and the Fed, etc., I think this missing detail is very, very relevant and should be updated. Thank you!
