Autopatrolled granted[edit]

Hi Bigredlance, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the "autopatrolled" permission to your account, as you have created numerous, valid articles. This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the autopatrolled right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. Burton Shipley[edit]

Bigredlance, have located any sources to establish Burton Shipley at Marshall in 1917–18? Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 02:13, 4 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, right here (https://mds.marshall.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?filename=8&article=1012&context=yearbooks&type=additional) Bigredlance (talk) 05:05, 5 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. This document only mentions "Shipley". There's nothing there to specifically ID this as Burton Shipley. The Marshall media guide lists their 1917 coach as "Carl Shipley". Jweiss11 (talk) 06:54, 5 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I pointed to the wrong one. Here's the smoking gun -- https://mds.marshall.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?filename=1&article=1012&context=yearbooks&type=additional. I went ahead and added this reference to the Burton Shipley page.
Looks good. I just found another source on newspapers.com to support this. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:05, 6 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Couple more formatting points[edit]

Bigredlance, thanks for your continued efforts to pump out these coach bio articles. I have couple more formatting points for you. First, for active coaches, like Allan Holland Jr., don't forget the current fields toward the top of the infobox. Second, tenure navboxes (playing, coaching, and administrative) should all be sorted in chronological order. See Robert Kyle. Jweiss11 (talk) 15:15, 18 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent! Didn't realize that about the navboxes. The Categories at the bottom, though, should I still put those in semi-alphabetical order? Thanks, Bigredlance (talk) 02:16, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I expanded the stub of George H. Garrey quite a bit with a public domain source: it seems college football was a relatively minor aspect of his life, per subsequent biographies. A good article, even a short one, should be balanced across the life of the subject per WP:PROPORTION. I also couldn't verify Garrey being a coach of anything, let alone the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point: the source you cited merely mentions being a captain in high school, and serving as acting captain on the University of Chicago team. Was this a mistake, or does another source mention this? Cheers, --Animalparty! (talk) 07:35, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for expanding the stub. Those are fair comments. I guess my justification for writing about his sports background was two-fold: (1) He was - even if just for a brief time - a head football coach at institution that is currently NCAA and/or NAIA sanctioned. This meets the commonly-accepted WP:GNG threshold as laid out by the WP:CFB community. (2) His biography was listed in the book titled "Who's Who in American Sports". I felt that this added an additional layer of legitimacy. As for the link, that is a fair criticism. I guess what I was going for was that he was linked to the game of American football. I should've made my reference links more concise. I will look into getting this clarified in the article. Thanks again for adding some information to that entry. Your help is appreciated.Bigredlance (talk) 03:52, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Animalparty: Just seeing this discussion now. Found some more sources from Newspapers.com on Garrey. He was an assistant coach for the 1902 Chicago Maroons football team. Bigredlance, how did you connect Garrey to Wisconsin–Stevens Point? Was that just a guess from the "Mr. Garrey" listed in the Wisconsin–Stevens Point media guide? Jweiss11 (talk) 01:02, 21 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

More odds and ends[edit]

Bigredlance, a couple more odds and ends:

  • When you create new bio articles, can you include the image, apt, and caption fields for Infobox college coach? Those should get populated at some point by some editor, so it's make sense to include those by default. See my edits at Bill Hollinger.
  • Second, why do you list "December 30, 2018" for the retrieval date for just about all of the sources you cite? Keeping those up-to-date to reflect when they are actually last accessed to build or improve an article will help other editors better understand the development of that article.

Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 00:49, 22 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the head's up. I included the image, apt, caption on all my pages now. The December 30, 2018 date is the date that I last downloaded a bunch of information from a spreadsheet that I had. I always re-check the information on the day that I create the pages, so it would probably be wise for me to update access-date to the date that I actually create the page.Bigredlance (talk) 03:39, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Johnny Thomas (American football, born 1957)[edit]

Bigredlance, where did you find the DOB (October 19, 1956) for Johnny Thomas (American football, born 1957)? If it's correct, the article should be renamed accordingly. Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 02:45, 24 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I lifted it from his own C.V. http://sacs.alcorn.edu/standards/3.4.11/Education%20&%20Psychology/Thomas.pdf Bigredlance (talk) 03:40, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Jim F. Law[edit]

Bigredlance, how's it going? What was your source for the DOB and full name for Jim F. Law? I found a 1922 article talking about "James E. Law" being hired at Lincoln. Morgan State's records list a "Jim F. Law". Jweiss11 (talk) 00:46, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The article A. D. Kenamond has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:GNG and WP:NGRIDIRON. Endymion.12 (talk) 22:04, 3 July 2019 (UTC)

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Endymion.12 (talk) 22:04, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and thank you for the input. I'd urge you not to delete this page. According to the WP:CFB wikiproject community, any head coach for an NCAA or NAIA program is considered to have satisfied WP:GNG.Bigredlance (talk) 01:44, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Access dates in references[edit]

Bigredlance, looks like the access-dates in your references have frozen again, this time on June 18, 2019. These dates should reflect when you actually accessed the source, presumably around the time you made the related edits. Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 02:46, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up. I'll get that fixed.Bigredlance (talk) 03:08, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Great. Some other items:

  • In references, when the source is a periodical, like the The Boston Globe, it should be put in the newspaper field of the cite news template, not the publisher field. The newspaper field will properly italicize it.
  • College football and basketball teams are not really publishers. When you're using a source from university athletics site, it best to scroll down to the footer of the page and see how the content is copyrighted. It will usually be copyrighted as the university/college as a whole or the university/college's athletic department.
  • If an article is categorized as a college athlete, e.g.Category:Northeastern Huskies football players, it should not also be categorized as an alumnus of that school, e.g. Category:Northeastern University alumni, as the latter category is a parent category of the former.

See my edits at Jim Murphy (American football) on these items. Jweiss11 (talk) 02:52, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

High school football coach categories[edit]

Bigredlance, heads up, Category:High school football coaches in the United States and Category:High school basketball coaches in the United States have been broken up by state now, so articles should be placed in the specific state subcategories, where possible. Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 04:31, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent Bigredlance (talk) 14:42, 16 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

William Edward Morrison[edit]

Bigredlance, happy Thanksgiving. Do you think Edward Morrison (American football) might be Lincoln's coach in 1927 and 1928? See: Template:Lincoln Lions football coach navbox. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:40, 1 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

More odds and ends[edit]

Bigredlance, a few more items on the bio articles. First, when citing sources from Newspapers.com, it's best practice to clip the articles and link to the clipping, not just the page of the newspaper in question. Clippings are viewable to anyone, not just those who have a subscription. See Wikipedia:Newspapers.com. Second, titles of articles that appear in all caps should be converted to title case. See my edits at Bill Caldwell (American football) on those two items. Also, the in case of active coaches, can you arrange the infobox fields as they display and be sure to include the current record and contract fields? See my edits as Jim Clements (American football). Finally, you seem to leave some irregular spaces in the birth/death date and place field in all the instances of Infobox college coach that you create. Can you just leave one space after each equal sign? Thanks all always and happy holidays. Jweiss11 (talk) 20:50, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

L. N. Morris[edit]

Bigredlance, do you think L. N. Morris, Lehigh's head coach in 1896, could be Ira Nelson Morris, which User:Connormah suggested back in 2012? I found this article, which indicates that the Morris who coached Lehigh in 1896 was a Yale grad. @Cbl62: any thoughts here? I haven't been able to find much else on Newspapers.com to definitively prove the connection. Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 00:56, 15 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

William R. Blair[edit]

Bigredlance, looks like William Blair (American football) is the same person as William R. Blair. Jweiss11 (talk) 15:17, 17 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, Thank You!! Can't believe I didn't catch this.Bigredlance (talk) 03:54, 18 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve Don Stalwick[edit]

Hello, Bigredlance,

Thank you for creating Don Stalwick.

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

The only sources are non-independent obituaries that appear to have been placed by the family. I'll need better than that to avoid an AfD nomination.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Sdkb}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

A tag has been placed on Category:Baltimore Bees football coaches requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! Delaware State - Naylor[edit]

Hi. I had previously done research on Delaware State football and initially also thought John D. Naylor had been their head coach that year. However, I later learned that Joe Purzycki is widely regarded as the first white person to coach the team-and that was in the 1980s (see here). It is much more likely to have been Millard Naylor, who was a famous black football coach in Delaware at the time ([1]). Or did you find another source specifically citing John as the coach? Autopatrolled right and notability of your articles[edit]

Hi Bigredlance — I recently came across Charles Dow Clark, an article that was created in 2019 with only two sources: IMDb (considered generally unreliable) and a magazine published by Clark's college that appears (the ref has no page numbers) to have only trivial coverage of him. As such, it did not (and does not today — the IMDb reference was converted to an external link, leaving only one) demonstrate his notability.

On investigating how it slipped through our patrol process, I found that you authored it shortly after Schwede66 granted you the autopatrolled right. I also observe above that your articles have been PRODed or AfDed fairly regularly.

2019 was a while ago, so I don't know without investigating further whether you would create an article like that today, and without direct evidence of more recent/ongoing issues my concern does not rise to the level of asking for the right to be removed. But I do just want to provide a reminder that autopatrolled is an advanced right, and that as part of it you are expected to create articles that demonstrate notability. If you have created other articles with similar issues, please go either add sources to them or AfD them if no such sources exist. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 02:16, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the ping, Sdkb. I've had a look at a handful of the latest articles created by this user (all from 2020) and they were all thinly referenced stubs with shaky notability. We expect something much more solid from an autopatrolled user and I shall thus remove this flag. Bigredlance, don't let that stop you from reapplying if you decide to create more articles that have more substance to them. Schwede66 07:17, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
