A tag has been placed on Kansas - Armenia National Guard Partnership, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. DGG ( talk ) 22:45, 20 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion[edit]

Hi Brian, I think there are a number of problems.

  • It was written in a promotional tone. Articles must be neutral and encyclopaedic. Examples of unsourced claims presented as fact include: in order to exchange knowledge in areas such as emergency management and disaster response, border and port security, economic security, peacekeeping operations and counter terrorism... it still cooperates with the organization on several issues, both through this program but also through others... The Kansas National Guard works closely with the Armenian Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Health, Rescue Service and other governmental offices and agencies... highlight some of the great accomplishments and enduring relationships ]
  • You shouldn't have image galleries, Commons is the place for those. All those images, divorced from the main text, again give a promotional feel to the article.
  • If you recreate, give some thought to independent verifiable sources. Wikipedia and YouTube are not suitable, and you should be careful about relying on the sources themselves for anything that's controversial or a matter of opinion. Having said that, I see that other editors were working to clean up the article, so I'll recreate for now, on the assumption that the issues above will be addressed Jimfbleak - talk to me? 09:56, 22 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You are right about that, try getting a Featured Article through. I'll have another look in a couple of days if I remember Jimfbleak - talk to me? 10:16, 22 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think that's fine as long as you bear in mind that they may have their own spin on stuff that isn't purely factual. I don't know if this organisation has ever attracted negative criticism, perhaps from Turkey, but if so, that should go in too Jimfbleak - talk to me? 12:01, 22 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And that's why we do not accept Wikipedia as a reliable source. Coupled with genuine mistakes, a favourite of the cleverer vandal is to slightly tweak numbers and dates, thus avoiding automatic reversion by Cluebot (a very clever anti-vandal bot) Jimfbleak - talk to me? 14:35, 22 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your article[edit]

Hi! I'm sorry that your article was deleted, I tried some minor editing but clearly that wasn't enough. I believed the article should be kept, although it didn't have too many independent sources, I'd say it was about a notable subject, and tried adding a source to that effect. Hopefully the article will stay here for now, if you have any questions please feel free to ask! Bjelleklang - talk 20:53, 22 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I made these edits (you shouldn't have fully capitalised titles, only one EL section, refs shouldn't be repeated in EL). It's possible that the YouTube links, often seen as problematic, may be chopped, but if it happens it's probably not worth fighting for. Seems OK now Jimfbleak - talk to me? 11:29, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I made these edits. There are a couple of things need fixing, it's up to if you can be bothered.
  • The external links are have the ] in the wrong place, I've fixed the first one
  • The last two refs aren't displaying properly because there is no title = parameter
No obligation on you to fix these
I assume you are going to do the other 50 or so articles (:

It's not on the AfC list, and there is the usual huge backlog there. you misunderstood, I meant move it straight to U.S. European Command State Partnership Program, which I've now done. You probably need to put a project banner or something on the talk page Jimfbleak - talk to me? 14:57, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Copyrighted contributions[edit]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions to the Indiana - Slovakia National Guard Partnership article, but for legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted.

You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must include on the external site the statement "I, (name), am the author of this article, (article name), and I release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 and later, and under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribute Share-Alike."

You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question at the "Help Desk". You can also leave a message on my talk page. Altered Walter (talk) 14:00, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I can't put my name on the external site, no one can because no one person is the author. Why in the world can't we just put 'U.S. European Command Public Affairs Office authorizes the release of its contents to Wikipedia...'? Briansmith451 (talk) 14:07, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Putting your name on the external site isn't enough, and citing the source of the copyrighted material also isn't enough: please see Wikipedia:Copyright violations for more information. I've reverted another big chunk of copyrighted material you added to New Jersey - Albania National Guard Partnership: please don't do it again. Thanks, Altered Walter (talk) 09:14, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You just said "Putting your name on the external site isn't enough...". So that I understand, please confirm that I can use the words from my own site verbatim if I put on my site "I, Brian Smith, am the author of this article, (NGB J53 International Affairs Slovakia / Indiana SPP Update), and I release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 and later, and under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribute Share-Alike". Also, I understand your position, but please understand that as soon as I finish all 22 pages (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._European_Command_State_Partnership_Program), I am sending out an email to all of our Bilateral Affairs Officers in the 22 Embassies and telling them they may begin to work on editing their own page. They are not Wiki experts and all I am trying to do at this point is give them a basic template from which they can go to town and populate their page with great content and their own words. If you can give me til the end of the week, I promise, there will be tons of additional new content. For example, if you look at the U.S. European Command SPP page, you will see many sources and lots of great content. That was my page and my edits, and that's what the other 22 pages will soon look like. I hope that will be ok.

Yes, on your own site you can explicitly release the content under the Creative Commons license, and that will take care of the copyright problem. Thanks for all your hard work here, but when you email out to your colleagues, please make sure you also pass them a link to WP:Conflict of interest: it can very difficult to write objectively about an organization that we're very closely connected with. Thanks, Altered Walter (talk) 10:30, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OK thanks. It will take me probably til Friday to get the EUCOM pages updated because there are 22 of them and I have to rely on our Public Affairs office to upload the documents. They are pretty quick though. Thanks for the heads up and for taking the time to explain.

January 2013[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but your recent edit removed maintenance templates from Ohio - Hungary National Guard Partnership. When removing maintenance templates, please be sure to either resolve the problem that the template refers to, or give a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry, as your removal of this template has been reverted. I thought this was some automated type of action. I had added an additional source for a total of 3 so I removed it thinking that 3 sources for such a tiny article would be enough. I'm still working on it.

It really isn't a problem of numbers. You do not have any independent, reliable sources. Everything is either referenced to the ONG or the government. You need references from books, magazines, newspapers, etc., some sort of reference that has a fact checking process in place (in other words not most websites). You will find material on what makes a source reliable here: WP:RS. Encyclopedias are what is known as tertiary sources. We only publish stuff that other reliable sources are writing about. You need sources like newspapers, etc. to show the notability of your subject. See WP:GNG. also, when you post on any talkpage, please sign your posts by typing four tildes (~~~~). Thanks! Gtwfan52 (talk) 09:44, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Got it. BTW, here is something that I just sent to another Wiki admin, so that you know where I am trying to take these pages... "I am sending out an email to all of our Bilateral Affairs Officers in the 22 Embassies and telling them they may begin to work on editing their own page. They are not Wiki experts and all I am trying to do at this point is give them a basic template from which they can go to town and populate their page with great content and their own words. Firstly, I am not an administrator. I am an editor just like you. Wikipedia is a collaborative project. We police ourselves for the most part. There are administrators of course, but they mostly stay out of content discussion. Secondly, I personally don't think that was such a good idea. People closely associated with a subject are discouraged from writing articles about the subject. see WP:COI. anyway, even though the overall tone of my communication with you has been kinda negative, I do wish you luck. If I can help you at all, don't hesitate to drop a note on my talk page. Gtwfan52 (talk) 09:54, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I love Wiki and understand why it has all the rules it has, but the one thing that baffles me and is completely illogical imo, is that subject matter experts are the ones they discourage most from writing on the subject. There aren't many people that can put together a page on U.S. European Command like I have, and anyone that could would have to be an expert on it just like me. They might not work for the Command, but they couldn't possibly do the subject of State Partnership justice without being closely associated with the subject. Just doesn't make sense to me. I will continue to populate the pages with good information and encourage other subject matter experts to do the same. If someone wants to delete the content just because the people that wrote it are too closely associated with the subject, then that would be a shame. Nevertheless, thanks for the heads up and thanks for volunteering your efforts.

IMHO they do that to force writers to write from sources rather than personal knowledge. Also, it is not so much an issue in your case, as being military you know how to keep it all "Joe Friday" (just the facts, maam) cause that is how you have to write for your job. But with businesses and musicians and schools and towns, people closely connected just can't seem to keep a perspective on what they are writing and it ends up sounding like ad copy, not an encyclopedia article.Gtwfan52 (talk) 10:42, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

State partnerships[edit]

You seem to be the principal editor for the US National Guard state partnership pages. I'd like to suggest that some of the material is essentially duplicated on the various pages, which is perfectly reasonable, as all the groups have the same general purposes, and it might be enough to cover some of it on the general page. Some of the historical background may also be unnecessary--the history of the Societ successor states is covered in the articles on them and just needs to be linked. I'm also not sure all the photos are meaningful to an encyclopedia: pictures of groups in action, yes; the formal pictures of everyone lined up on an air field, not really.

But, more important, some of the material is copied from various state national guard sites, such as the paragraph sourced by ref 10 in Kansas – Armenia National Guard Partnership. Unlike US Government pages, these are protected by copyright, and can be not used without a formal license under our usual free licensing terms, which is not likely to be forthcoming from a state government. (A few states, like California, have their web sites in the public domain, and this does not apply) Some parts are copied from US Govt pages, which is OK as far as copyright is concerned, but still amounts to Plagiarism, unless the exact material copied is indicated by quotation marks or otherwise--as an example, the California page does it properly. There's still a question of whether the full quotes are needed, as the style is, as would be expected, more bureaucratic than encyclopedic. I'm not really eager to go through them all and fix these things , though I will if I have to--but as you know the subject better, you could do a better job of it. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open![edit]

Hello, Briansmith451. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Transatlantic Collaborative Biological Resiliency Demonstration has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No indication of notability, self-references, reads like a press release

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
