Welcome[edit]

Welcome!

Welcome to Wikipedia, Brisvegas/Archive1! My name is Ryan, aka Acetic Acid. I noticed that you were new and haven't received any messages yet. I just wanted to see how you were doing. Wikipedia can be a little intimidating at first, since it uses different formatting than other sites that use HTML and CSS. In the long run, though, you'll find that the WikiSyntax is a lot easier and faster than those other ways. Here are a few links to get you started:

There are a lot of policies and guides to read, but I highly recommend reading over those first. If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a message on my talk page. Please be sure to sign your name on Talk using four tildes (~~~~) to produce your name and the current date, along with a link to your user page. This way, others know when you left a message and how to find you. It's easier than having to type out your name, right? :)

I hope you enjoy contributing to Wikipedia. We can use all the help we can get! Have a nice day. Sincerely, Ryan. 09:46, August 1, 2005 (UTC)

You're welcome. I got my Exception Newcomer award. I'm satisfied with that. :P Plus, they are older, more experienced welcomers, like Longhair and Redwolf24. Keep up the good work. Ryan 09:12, August 3, 2005 (UTC)

Politics of Australia[edit]

What are you doing?? You're massively disfiguring articles with this template (States and territories of Australia for a specific example). We already have a politics template that was formatted footer style for a reason - namely, that Aust politics article weren't always large enough to justify a sidebox. For what it's worth, I prefer side boxes (although not the design you've selected. I have variants in my sandbox somewhere). But there's better ways to go about things: discussion, and proper implementation.--Cyberjunkie | Talk 09:47, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My mistake. I have already begun removing the new template from several articles. Brisvegas 10:00, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I hope I wasn't to harsh. And sorry for the late response - I am floating in and out of Wikipedia at the moment. To discuss a reformat of the existing Template:Politics of Australia, just raise the issue at it's talk page.--Cyberjunkie | Talk 11:11, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Autoeroticism merge[edit]

On what basis did you merge Autoeroticism into Autosexuality? The consensus on Talk:Autoeroticism was that they are two different topics, and should be covered in separate articles. Was there some other discussion I'm not aware of that came to a different consensus? --Icarus 05:54, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I was looking through Category:Articles to be merged, and noticed that a backlog message requested Wikipedians to help with merging. The two articles you mentioned were listed as "to be merged", so wanting to help clear the backlog, I proceeded to follow the request (I also merged baldness with alopecia). Feel free to de-merge, if that's the consensus, but please ensure that they are not listed in the category again. Brisvegas 07:17, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent merge of Equinoctial Point --> Equinox[edit]

Dear Brisvegas: Firstly, I hope that you are settling into Wikipedia editing well, and that you are starting to become an "old hand" at this editing business :) I just thought I should direct you to Wikipedia:Merging and moving pages to give you a bit of guidance on how to correctly perform a merge of two pages. Rather than moving the old page to a subpage, all you have to do is blank it and replace it with a redirect to where you have merged it to. It is important that the original page history is kept in its original place for copyright reasons; I have fixed this by deleting the new redirect article that you created and moving the old history back to its rightful place. The correct procedure for performing a page move like this is outlined in the page I linked to above. I do hope this clarifies matters for you; I would like to thank you for all your hard work on Wikipedia, and if you have any questions or concerns about editing do please drop me a note on my talk page. Best regards, --NicholasTurnbull | (talk) (e-mail) (cabal) 03:59, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Also, just wanted to point out the same is true for Alopecia --> Baldness - you should leave the original page where it is, but redirect it when you've finished the merge. Many thanks, --NicholasTurnbull | (talk) (e-mail) (cabal) 04:27, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your suggestions - I will certainly take them on board. Brisvegas 09:08, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your helpful edits. I don't suppose they will make anyone change their minds or votes, but it's a better page for them. Bishonen too did a great copy edit, and it lookes OK to me, but then to me it always did, but my grammar always lets my English down, my major problem is that I've probably stared at the page for too long, and my second problem is that I quite like it. Thanks. Regards Giano | talk 09:01, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

PS:

Ah, just read you page and see I've been here before - double thanks. Giano | talk 09:03, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Brisbane Infobox[edit]

While I heartily approve of the additions to the Brisbane page, I can't help but think it would have been much better to edit the Australian cities infobox instead. Every Australian city has a mayor or leader of some kind, and there's no reason why Brisbane needs its own infobox. --Dalziel 86 01:38, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've reverted the Brisbane page to Template:Infobox Australian City, and submitted Template:Brisbane infobox as a template for deletion, as it is a bit redundant given the existence of Template:Infobox Australian City. --Dalziel 86 01:57, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Oookay... When I said you should consider editing Template:Infobox Australian City, I was kinda thinking you'd propose changes on the Talk page, and then move forward with the changes once there was consensus. --Dalziel 86 09:59, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Very well. I will leave the infobox to rest for now and concentrate on other articles. But I hope you see that the current infobox isn't as informative as it should be. Brisvegas 10:01, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yes, I agree completely. I definitely think the infobox could use more information in it. However, I'm not sold on the merits of having an infobox for every unique case. In Australia alone, there are far too many of those for it to be practical. I'm thinking the best idea is to find some common ground additions to Template:Infobox Australian City, and then we can go from there. --Dalziel 86 10:10, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My barnstar[edit]

Thank you very much for the award - totally unexpected - and for noticing my contributions. Fear not, this won't go to my head (too much) and I'll keep concentrating on the little details of the encyclopedia and improving articles on all manner of topics. Cya around the Wiki! Harro5 06:33, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. I am using your Caulfield Grammar School article as my inspiration for my own Kedron State High School article. Enjoy your barnstar - you deserve it! Brisvegas 06:34, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Esperanza![edit]

Welcome, Brisvegas/Archive1, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member, you might be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. A spam list is maintained by Redwolf24 to keep members up to date; you might want to consider adding your name to the list. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Essjay, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of myself, Flcelloguy, Ryan Norton, and Acetic Acid. The next set of elections will be at the end of the year, and I would be glad to see you vote, or even consider running for a position.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact me via email or talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to be!

Thanks kindly![edit]

Thanks for the award... wonder which article lead you to me? Anyway, I wasn't even aware of it until today when I went to edit some info in my user page, so that was a pleasant surprise. Thanks much! Coolgamer 01:04, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

To be honest, I can't even remember what led me there, but the end justifies the means right? :) I could see, however, that your contributions were of high quality and well thought-out. Well done! Brisvegas 09:48, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Psy guy's RfA[edit]

Thanks for supporting my RfA. It recently closed with final tally of 51/1/2. I sincerely appreciate it and I hope I can live up to your expectations. I will try my best to be a good administrator. Psephos and Wikipedia[edit]

I have given that idea some thought, and I am aware that Wilfried Derksen has decided to move his elections website, Electionworld, into Wikipedia. I am not prepared to do so until Wikipedia makes the necessary reforms to protect editors and articles from vandalism. Under the current structure I would have no way of protecting the integrity of my data, which I have spent years accumulating, from the cranks and cultists who at present are allowed a free run at Wikipedia. Christmas on the frontpage[edit]

Hey, just wanted to let you know that Today's Featured Article isn't chosen by consensus like featured article candidates are. User:Raul654 chooses the articles that go on the frontpage, all you have to do is request them and then suggest a date and he will choose it. I noticed you have already placed the article on there, but you should let Raul654 know first before doing this. Also, I also support the article for December 25, and I think it'll most likely end up on that date, but better make sure he's ok with you placing it there and not him. Thanks. -- PRueda29 Ptalk29 00:40, 18 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for informing me about the Today's featured article procedure - I will certainly take this new info on board. Brisvegas 06:12, 18 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No Problem, I'm going to go ahead and remove the article off the December 25 page and then let Raul654 add it when it's time. As you can see, both November and Cool were added to the frontpage once their requested dates neared. Christmas will probably get placed there sometime in December, but it's better if we wait and let the process run its course. Thanks. PRueda29 Ptalk29 15:08, 18 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Halibutt's RfA[edit]

Thanks. WikiThanks.
Thanks. WikiThanks.
I would like to express my thanks to all the people who took part in my (failed) RfA voting. I was both surprised and delighted about the amount of support votes and all the kind words! I was also surprised by the amount of people who stated clearly that they do care, be it by voting in for or against my candidacy. That's what Wiki community is about and I'm really pleased to see that it works.
As my RfA voting failed with 71% support, I don't plan to reapply for adminship any more. However, I hope I might still be of some help to the community. Cheers! Halibutt 05:10, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Catholic Church of Wikipedia[edit]

The discussion on the deletion of this article has been closed and so your vote was too late. I have removed it because we have to keep the discussion as an accurate record of the consensus to keep the article. -- Francs2000 10:52, 30 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks A Thousand for Barnstar![edit]

Hallo my dear Friend. Thank you enormously for your award of a Barnstar for my contributions to Buddhism on Wiki. I am delighted and amazed!!! In fact, I was not aware of the existence of Barnstars, so it is a double surprise and a double delight to receive one from yourself. Thank you very, very much. I shall carry on trying to add whatever little knowledge of Buddhism I possess to the pages of Wiki! Thank you again for your generosity. Have a very happy Christmas and a marvellous New Year! Warmly yours - Tony. TonyMPNS 13:39, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You are very welcome - you certainly deserved it. I also wish you an excellent Christmas holiday season and look forward to your further contribution to Wikipedia's understanding of Buddhism. See you round. Brisvegas 06:34, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Maps for Brisbane[edit]

I will look into it and get back to you. I think I might have to try switching from Illustrator to Inkscape for my maps so that I can upload in SVG, so that future editors can easily make changes. Illustrator's SVGs don't appeear to play nicely with wikipedia. --Martyman-(talk) 10:47, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have had a look for reference maps for Brisbane. For some reason the flash maps you sent a link to don't work for me. I can't find a map that shows the official borders of each suburb. Also I suspect there may be too many suburbs to go into the detail we have with Canberra (indavidual infobox map for each suburb). I could easily produce a map of the council areas like this map. Or I could attempt to make a more detailed map liek the first on eyou linked to, but then highling indavidual suburbs etc is not easy. What exactly where you hoping for?

Thanks for pointing out the problem with the wording at the Dickson Centre article. I've edited it a bit so it should make sense now. Also posted a reply on the talk page. See if it makes sense, and pls let me know if it doesn't. Thanks. -- Adz 13:05, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Pro-life celebrities category up for deletion[edit]

Copyright violation in Fetal pain[edit]

Expanding the article on Fetal pain was a good idea, but you copied some of the text almost verbatim from your source: [1]. Wikipedia has to be very careful about copyright permissions. Copying text from other websites is generally not allowed. Making tiny changes so that the words aren't identical isn't enough to avoid this - there have to be substantial changes. I've rewritten the section you copied, so it will be okay, but please don't do this again. FreplySpang (talk) 01:45, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It was difficult to write it in a totally different manner, given that the source article was excellent in its hanling of this complex issue. Thank you for your tips; I will strive in future for more original contributions. Brisvegas 02:42, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
