A kitten for you!

Hi, Thank you for the help. I'm friends with Jimmy Lyon and I'll also see if he would list on his Wikipedia page that he went to Marina High. I'll also do some more research on other Notable Alumni. I did have another question. How do I add a text box to the right of the article to add our School Emblem and information about the high school? Thanks and have a great weekend! Ellen H.

Eholmgren -- For his Wikipedia page to list that he went to Marina High, there would be the same problem. All Wikipedia pages need to be based on reliable sources, and one Wikipedia page can't be the source for another Wikipedia page. Does he have an official website? I don't see an obvious one. He could list his high school there if so. Another way would be to ask him if he happens to know any press articles about himself that mention his high school. Eholmgren I put up the infobox for you. You can add extra information to it if you know the answers to (and ideally have reliable sources for) any of the blanks. To get a logo in the infobox, you'll first have to upload a file. It's a pretty complicated process but there is a file upload wizard that hopefully can help you jump through all the hoops. Just click "Upload file" in the bar at the left of any page to start. Then, once it's uploaded, specify the filename in the infobox (e.g. | image = Schoollogo.jpg). Notability of educational institutions?

Thank you for the cookies. I got your message, and also the invitation to the Tea House, but could not quite figure out how to use the latter, so please allow me to contact you directly in this way.

You noted in your review that more evidence was required to underpin the notability of a given entity, and read through the exchanges between you and other users on your talk page. I have come to understand (I think) that membership/ affiliation with a notable body does not automatically confer notability on an institution, right? (e.g. in the Case of a Library, with multiple memberships in organizations that have a Wikipedia entry).

On the other hand, I saw that there were a few entries on High Schools in the US, which would most probably be referenced in newspapers -- can I infer, then, that press coverage is something that would be an index of notability?

Any other leads and comments would be much appreciated. This is the first draft that I have every written, and I am eager to learn. Also, if I edit and resubmit, will you be looking at it again -- in other words, are you 'my' editor that I can work with?

Mark.muehlhaeusler WP:GNG is the page that lays out the general notability guidelines that apply to pretty much everything on Wikipedia. The basic yardstick is whether there is significant coverage in multiple reliable independent sources. That could be "press" coverage, or could be coverage in any other such sources (in the case of an academic library, I'm not sure if the library's collections would be discussed in library-related scholarly journals, for example). I'm not your assigned editor -- if you resubmit, it goes back in the general pool. If you think you have made progress with adding more independent sources, feel free to contact me on my talk page again. If I think it's good enough, I'll approve it. Dear Calliope, Thanks for the hints, and the kind offer to take another look. After your response, I re-read your original note, and get the sense that the issue at stake is: whether the Library is commonly seen as sufficiently independent from its parent institution to merit separate treatment. I guess that with larger institutions, one can argue both ways ... but for the sake of the draft, I obviously assume that it *is* a topic in its own right. So, I went and gathered some references, which I tried to insert in the right spots throughout the draft. I don't expect to sway your judgement all at once --there are a few more references that I could add--, but wonder if you can tell me if I'm on the right track here. Mark.muehlhaeusler, that's somewhat better -- though note that the interview with David Arnold isn't independent given that Arnold is describing his own university's library. Ravin9976 -- For now, I would recommend leaving that section out entirely. See what can be written about the company using only secondary sources. Eventually, some content sourced to primary sources could be acceptable (see WP:PSTS). Given that the main problem with the article is that notability has not been established, and primary sources cannot be used to establish notability, I'd just concentrate on getting as much good content from secondary sources as possible. I'm not sure how to fix the "notability" issue on the page I'm trying to create (Cathleen Miller: Author). I've included articles from numerous sources, including a New York Times article. I recently wrote an article on Alix Malka/Photographer that was declined. I was wondering if you could inform me as to how to create an article that establishes his Notability.

In my article I listed his cover work with the dates/issue and volume of the magazines, is there a better way to cite these? I have also used sources like the Photo Magazine and Essays written about him for Art Basel, how do I properly cite these?

Any other pointers would be appreciated.

Stephanieelle -- Generally, you should be citing references about him and his work, not citing his work itself. Right now there are plenty of references to his work, but those primary sources don't help to establish notability. Sources like essays written about him for Art Basel could be helpful to establish notability. You can check out Help:Referencing for beginners to learn how to make footnotes (the videos are the most helpful part of the page IMO). In general, though, formatting of references is not terribly important so long as you include the key facts about the reference -- author, title, date, publication name/volume/number if in a periodical, publisher, ISBN if a book, etc. Calliopejen1 (talk) 19:18, 21 May 2015 (UTC)

Hello. Thank you for your feedback. This is my first wiki submission; I'm still finding my feet.

I had a moment of clarity when I realized that the references should be to third parties. I was stuck in my uni paradigm of footnotes. In this case, my references were to the popular works based on Jerry Rhodes' original research. I have found 3rd party references and will edit accordingly (once I figure out how to edit references).

Re your comment about "not catching on", it's an interesting point. Over 150,000 people around the world have been exposed to the Effective Intelligence model (typically through the Thinking-Intentions Profile), but the online proofs of that are admittedly scarce. Perhaps because the model was originally built for the Philips corporation and not in academe.

Hmmm. May I clarify that you have declined the entry for both reasons? References and "catching on"? I know I can improve the references, but I don't know how to convince you about the models "widespreadness". CAn you suggest something?

MMacClark -- "Catching on" and references are essentially the same thing. "Catching on" is basically my shorthand for a lot of third-party references discussing the idea. I'm skeptical that enough third-party sources exist in the first place given the citation counts at Google Scholar, but maybe you could prove me wrong. I'd recommend putting together a new list of reliable independent sources (without rewriting the article yet -- if the concept isn't notable I don't want you spending a ton of time writing that is ultimately wasted!) that explicitly discuss Rhodes' concept of "effective intelligence". Then I'd recommend asking me or someone else at Wikipedia:Teahouse for guidance about whether the references show notability. Once you've gotten enough references, then you can work on rewriting the article (probably from scratch) based mainly on what third-party references say, with limited references to Rhodes' work itself. The point of an encyclopedia article is not just to summarize Rhodes' findings but to put them in context -- what have other people said about them? etc. Calliopejen1 (talk) 17:28, 15 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi Calliope.

Many of the articles I list in References are available in PDF format, but behind a purchasing front for the journal in question. Firstly, may I cite something behind a paywall? Secondly, may I cite articles by Jerry Rhodes, himself. Can we assume that, say, the journal "Industrial & Commercial Training" would not publish something they hadn't vetted, effectively proclaiming the article's veracity?

Another question, Is it possible for a concept to be notable while not having many web references? If yes, I'm trying to think of some way to prove that the model and its tools have been used by over 150k people around the world. Hmmm.

In other news, I have updated my citations to independent sources, limited though they are. Should I resubmit the posting, or shall I provide the citations to you in this mode?

MMacClark -- Re paywalled or offline sources, those are fine. Re sources to Rhodes' site/books/etc, those do not help to establish notability so I would omit them almost entirely for now. Works by Rhodes published in journals also do not help to establish notability. (Sometimes if an author has a high h-index it can be an indication of notability, but that standing alone is normally insufficient -- and Rhodes is nowhere near the ballpark we're talking about, i.e. minimum double digits.) If all that exists about effective intelligence is in those very few references you have cited, it is probably not notable and probably does not qualify for a Wikipedia article. Hi Calliope. I guess I'm sure of the subject's notability, notwithstanding the lack of linkable citations. I'm looking at the wiki entry for DISC https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DISC_assessment which is likely better known than Effective Intelligence, and yet it contains fewer citations and references, and of lesser independence than the citations and references I'm providing for Effective Intelligence. I don't understand how it warrants a pass, and EI doesn't. I'm not being obstreperous, just looking for clarity. Please see WP:OTHERSTUFF. Maybe DISC should be deleted too, but no one has gotten around to it yet... Notability is synonymous with editors' ability to provide suitable citations. Bird name capitalization

Hello, I saw one of your recent edits, looked at your recent contributions, and see that we are doing similar things. I'm going through groups of birds, right now Charadriiformes, looking for links that redirect through the old capitalization and fixing them using AWB. If you are interested, I'd be willing to share the AWB file that helps me make the corrections. Also I'm wondering if you know anyone else who's working on this, and if there would be any benefit in coordinating; at least not duplicating. SchreiberBike, I'm working intermittently doing the same thing, using the list User:Calliopejen1/Bird caps. I don't know of anyone else working on this, though it's definitely possibe! Would you like to check off what you have done so far so that I don't end up covering the same territory? How exactly are you using AWB to help your review? Just to find targets to fix, and then fixing them mostly manually? Or do you somehow have a script that fixes wrong capitalization throughout an article? I'll look at your page and see how I can record what I've done there; my notes are less systematic at User:SchreiberBike/Workspace/Bird names. Using AWB, I've set up a list of over 2000 search and replace rules which looks for capitalized species name words and replaces them with lower case. For instance right now I'm working on Great Auk; it finds each instance of "Great" and changes it to "great" and "Auk" to "auk". It would also pick up "Great Britain" and many others, but I've written rules to work around them. It does still pick up "Great Gold Robbery" and turns it into "great gold Robbery" (since "Gold" also has a rule), but it is very easy to undo the automatic changes in AWB before they are saved. I'd guess that it gives more false positives than real corrections, but undoing them is quick, and it catches nearly all of the real problems. I do find new problems to add to the list though, e.g., your correction of "Nothura" that I saw recently. I think it makes me much faster, and I've expanded to try to cover all species' common names. Like any automation, it's got to be used carefully and I've made a few messy errors. If you are interested in trying AWB, I'd be happy to share.  SchreiberBike | ⌨  19:40, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

Yes, I'm trying to cover all species' common names, but I still do many rarer plants manually. I'll send you an e-mail through the system, then if you reply to my address I'll be able to send you the file. User:Julia W initially send me a file to use in AWB to work on the "List of birds of ..." series where it only needed to pick up the second word in a name and I've expanded it from there.  SchreiberBike | ⌨  20:02, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
File sent. Since I'm already using an automated tool, I've added some of my other pet peeves to the search and replace list. Most of them are at the top of the list, so they can easily be removed. To exclude false positives, I go through a process where I first rename, for example, "Great Britain" to "G!!reat Britain", then change all the other "Great"s to lower case and then change "G!!reat Britain" back. For that reason, the order of the list has to stay pretty much the same. I suspect there are quirks to the list that I'm not aware of, but I'm happy to answer questions.  SchreiberBike | ⌨  20:17, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

That makes sense, but it's not too hard. If you go to "Options"/"Normal settings" you can see all the rules. It's lots of simple rules that all together make something complex. As I've done some more edits this afternoon, I'm seeing that sometimes there are a lot more false positives than real fixes. Thank you for taking the time to review my article Bill C-634: Canadian Environmental Bill of Rights. I wanted to let you know that I will be updating and reviewing my article using your comments but I do not feel that news coverage necessarily dictates notability. Bill C-634 has actually passed the second reading within the Canadian House of Commons which notes that members debated the bills principles and decided that the bill meet the Canadian public needs and that the ideas were sound. This is turn makes the Bill more significant than a "run-of-the-mill legislative proposal going nowhere" as you commented on.

I would argue that where pieces of legislation are considered the process and intent behind them is just as significant as the media coverage they receive. Especially for students of the law, policy and environment within Canada. This is why I will be reviewing my work and resubmitting it soon.

Thank you for your review and critique. I have trimmed the fat of the article to the bare bones that are backed up by the sources. I had composed the article based in part on the subject's LinkedIn bio trimming out the parts that are not supported by the sources.

In the edit I have tried to avoid sounding like an advertisement and have highlighted what is important about the subject. As a music executive, he was the man behind some of the biggest record holding albums and global celebrities (Beyonce') that we know today. As we can see he has also created a successful deal and product with Cohiba Cigars and Jay-Z.

Many of these types of subjects are very silent and do not seek attention, which is why I like and decided to pick such a person. My research has shown me that one would have to be at a very high level within the music business or cannabis industry to come into contact or do business with one of these subjects. For instance, Clive Calder may be the most successful record label owner in the history of music (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clive_Calder) but his Wiki entry is scant when compared to contemporaries David Geffen or Jimmy Iovine. Partly because until he sold to BMG, he did not seek the spotlight and therefore very little written about this powerful man, yet the world knew about the artist he spawned (Will Smith, Britney Spears, N'Sync, The Backstreet Boys, R. Kelly).

I decided to try to encapsulate another important figure before he dies or has reached the lexicon. I believe it is an injustice that only the stories of those who seek the media are being told in Wikipedia. I ask that you please review the changes made and reconsider.

The sources don't support the claims you're making here about Wright's importance. Wikipedia judges notability by coverage in reliable, independent sources and doesn't make special allowances for people who "do not seek attention". In my research post resubmission, I have come across multiple pages on Wikipedia of artist such as flykingi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flykingi)that have extensive Wiki articles, sketchy sources and have not done .1% that my subject matter has in their given industry. Kunal.v.v, Wikipedia judges notability by coverage in reliable sources. A person who is a "quiet worker" and does not receive press coverage simply does not qualify for a Wikipedia article. I see you have resubmitted the article for review without improving the referencing. I can all but guarantee that the next reviewer will decline your article as well. Hi Jen I have raked through the internet with the finest of tooth combs and found several new sources for information about Ray Whitley. A question for you, I have an email from a friend of Whitleys who knows Rays sister. Am I able to use this information or is it strictly only usable if its from a website? One other question I have is hopefully when the article is accepted I need to somehow make a difference between the two people with the same name. I believe it's a Disambiguation but not sure of how to go about it, or if it is myself that does it, or someone in higher control at Wiki. Also I would like to use a picture[1] I have found on the internet but not sure who has the copyright or how to go about aquiring permission. Maybe I'll just hold on a while... Thanks for your help. @Artofwork: It looks like there should be enough there to write an article, though the article may have to be somewhat more bare-bones than what is there already. I'm working on some cleanup now. You can't use a non-published email because of Wikipedia's policies about original research and verifiability. Note that not all sources need to be "from a website" -- e.g. a published book that isn't online could also be a source, or a newspaper article from the 1960s or 1970s that hasn't been digitized. Regarding disambiguation, I can help you with that once the page is live. Finally, re: the picture issue, it's fairly complicated. Given that you have that email, could you contact a member of Whitley's family for a photo? That would be the best method. They would have to release a photo of Whitley under a free license, meaning that anyone (not just Wikipedia) could use it. See this page for more information about media donations. @Artofwork: Do you have a better source for him being inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame? The problem is I'm not sure how we can tell that it's not the other (more famous) Ray Whitley that was inducted. Panama

tThe best way I think would be to put on excel and then get a set format like xxx is a village and corregimiento of xxx Province, Panama. As of 2010 it had a population of ddd, and covered an area of xxxx km2. Then simply start them all feeding off the common data. Dr. Blofeld, The problem is that there isn't a one fact per column format so it will take some manual reformatting to get to a good starting point. And then there are inconsistencies in the data e.g. some have historical population data and some do not, some have provinces and some have comarcas, etc etc. I can get there but it will take a bit of doing. Oh and about the ones that exist currently, some of them are better than what I've got, and some are worse. Most at least have coordinates for the places, which my articles don't have. I was also thinking of eliminating latm/lats/latNS/longm/longs/longEW (currently blank rows) from the infobox because I normally just use decimal cords pulled from Google maps. Thoughts? I don't think that's actually a corregimiento. See the Spanish article -- the city (the capital) is a district, and its subdivisions are corregimientos. I think that it's included in the template because it's the capital, not because it's a corregimiento. That happened to me once in Panama Oeste Province. We may want to redirect the link in the template to a combined city/district article like es.wiki has done. We're about 60% done I think -- I'll put some more up a bit later. Hi. I'm probably in the dummies category but I'm doing my best to edit an article on the First Robot Olympics that took place in Glasgow in 1990 (it's in Guinness book of records etc etc). I started the piece a year ago and put in a lot of work a year ago to get an initial draft and was then waiting for input from others to contribute. Then, after six months I was told if it didn't get completed it would get deleted. I requested it to get put back but when it was all the content had disappeared. Bit demoralised. You just sent a message saying that by now empty document will be deleted. Please, please, if there is any way of getting back the original document I promise to get it finished quickly and to get input from the dozens of robot builders (US, Japan, Russia, India .....) who competed at the time. I may be able to return to this later, but I started reading and got bored because evangelism is probably one of my least favorite topics to read about. One comment I have is that the "ideology" section (and perhaps other bits of the article) seems a little "in-universe" -- e.g. "JC's Girls connects female sex workers with churches the organization believes to be non-judgmental,[5] hoping that the women will experience the love of Christ through these churches". This is written as though "the love of Christ" is a thing that uncontroversially exists in the world. Overall, it doesn't seem too bad, and I might be able to lend my support but I'd have to set aside some time later to come back to it and think about it more thoroughly. LLRungegordon -- My first basic question: Why did you create this page at Mediawiki? (I.e. was it a conscious choice to put it there vs. English Wikipedia?) And this is why I need help. I was attaching the event page to Wiki-meetup, and I wasn't aware of the difference between Mediawiki until I tried to link to Wikipedia articles. Also the Inspire grant site is on MediaWiki, and they asked for a "target site" which I thought meant a wiki page for the event, but maybe not? Sigh. I should create a new page on English Wikipedia. Is that standard operating procedure for editathons? All the links for advice on how to organize the editathons have proven very unhelpful. I get the sense that Wikipedia and all its organization (like Wiki Education) are developing so rapidly that there isn't a general introduction for the newbie available to orient herself. If I recall from when I was working on it, much of my work (which I thought was much better than what existed -- good sourcing etc.) was quickly removed by others, so I'm not sure I care to invest much time in that article. Re Panama, I posted more stubs here and it has kind of stalled. Now we are just needing to finish up the comarcas. Dear Calliopejen1, In September 2014 I was in the process of creating a page for Mr. Richard S. Pick (musician) who made a very large contribution to the study of Classical Guitar. I was having some trouble with the documenting process of Mr. Pick's many publications and then was sidetracked by my job responsibilities, thus setting aside the draft for later returning and publishing it. I have since done more research, have traveled and met with some of Mr. Pick's former students from Depaul University (Chicago) who provided me with some additional background and detail for the article. I see now that my original article has been deleted and understand that there are procedures for bringing it back for further editing and backup material. I am hoping that I can request your guidance in getting me back to this project in an orderly, acceptable fashion. You help would be greatly appreciated. There was no option when I did the revert, or I would have stated that, although I appreciate the effort you put into finding that image, it is no where near as good as the one you replaced. It pretty much makes Cooley look like a goofball, is cluttered with parts of whatever the whole was being used to portray, and is basically a head shot pasted on a cartoonish image. Perhaps that page from Billboard could be used to demonstrate Cooley's popularity somewhere else in the article. Cooley was an important figure in his prime, and the up front image of him should reflect that.Steve Pastor (talk) 22:10, 23 August 2015 (UTC)

1. I saw http://www.censusrecords.com/Search?LastName=jain&CensusYear=1900 There is apparently a last name of European origin with the same spelling. None of the individuals in the 1900 census have any connection with India. Also note that the custom of using "Jain" as the last name by some of the Jains in India became common only in 20th century.

2. Books and articles explicitly mention the first Jain settlers arriving in 1944 (Jains in India and Abroad, Prakas C. jain, ISJS, 2011, see p. 99). I have seen the names of the families somewhere.

I declined the article for lack of notability. If the only attention the company has garnered in third party sources is four articles at financemagnates.com and one article at leaprate.com, I don't think the company is significant enough for a Wikipedia article. I would recommend reading WP:OTHERSTUFF because sometimes other Wikipedia articles are poor models. If you disagree with my assessment, I would recommend posting at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Finance or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Business to get a second opinion. @Epg2015: To be frank, I'm not sure this organization qualifies for an article (no matter how it is written) -- see WP:ORG and WP:GNG. But if you would like to keep trying, I would recommend finding only the highest-quality five sources about the organization and removing all other sources/references from the article. The best sources = sources that are independent of the organization and discuss it in some depth (typically this would be newspaper articles). Then rewrite the article using ONLY what those sources can support. Delete all content referenced to the organization's own website and to sources affiliated with the organization. @YL4604: I fixed the duplicate articles. Re the not constructive notice, maybe that editor was referring to this edit? I think it was probably a mistake that this got saved. Okay, so for volcanos/volcanoes both are correct, I left it as the original. For "well established black community" there should be a hyphen so I added it back. This image is South African and was originally used on a page for a city called Welkom in South Africa.. South African copyright specifies rights only for 50 years from original publication; or 50 years from creation if unpublished (collective work, anonymous or pseudonymous work, audiovisual work, posthumous work) 50 years from creation (photographs or the work of applied art. The original image is circa 1940, therefore it is deemed in general public use. South African Copyright Act of 1978. P.S. I travel a lot and may not always have access to the internet. I do find it a bit unfair that the time frames are so short for people to respond to, or that the person who is asking for more details does not fully clarify their issue. I see that you are American and I urge you to understand that different countries have their own distinctive specifications to copyright. Kind regards.

@Caracal Rooikat: The issue is that everything uploaded to Wikipedia must be public domain in the US, because Wikipedia's servers are in the US. Because of some unusual and arbitrary legislation in the US, works have to be public domain in their home country as of 1996 to be public domain in the US. Dear Calliopejen1, another user, User:Ettrig has been single handedly trying to relocate the expand language templates to the bottom of pages across multiple pages against the consensus[4], having already begun the process, a few examples shown here[5][6][7][8], and is continuously trying to force this new guideline onto the howto template[9] which is transcluded on the documentation on all the expand templates. Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Calliopejen1. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

Hi. You helped out with my Environmental Law class a couple of years ago where I had a wikipedia assignment. It was very helpful for the students to get feedback from members of the community. I'm wondering if you'd be willing to do the same this semester? As a reminder, it is a Master's level course in Environmental Science at the University of San Francisco and the students (who are mainly working professionals), in teams of two, will be asked to write a new article. The articles would start in their sandboxes early to mid November and then go live by the third week in November. Any help is greatly appreciated and just having them know that there are wikipedians (and lawyers) out there that will be looking at their work adds a level of meaning to their work. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Calliopejen1.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

New Page Review needs your help

Hi Calliopejen1,

As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).

Since July there has been a very serious backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.

Although New Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.

It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right at WP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page at WP:NPR and the new tutorial.

Reverted recent deletion from article on Consumer behaviour

You recently reverted two long passages from an article on Consumer behaviour. Your reversion was accompanied by the edit summary "remove content added by User:Grochim that was probably copied from a printed source. do not restore without rewriting from scratch." The use of the term "probably" suggests that you are uncertain about the content's origin. I do not think that it is appropriate to delete content based on a hunch or a speculation. I have performed a basic search for this content using Google, and it does not come up in sources, other than those who are copying the Wikipedia' content (such as Coursehero.com and Wikivisually. This suggests that the relevant content was actually developed by a Wikipedia user. I have worked extensively on this article, and when I see content that I suspect to be cut and paste, I either report it (for lengthy sections) or paraphrase it. In all the time I was working on this article, I never had a problem with the passages you reverted as they are very general in charater and refer to the black box concept which is well-known and canvassed in virtually every introductory marketing/consumer behaviour text-book. @BronHiggs: Some of the content added by Grochim was in fact copied from the printed source cited, which I should have mentioned. And there is a good chance that the remainder of the content was copied. In virtually every instance where we have been able to compare his contributions against the source text, they were copied verbatim or essentially verbatim. (And he usually worked from printed sources, not from websites -- so searching for the content in Google will not necessarily reveal the copyright violation.) It looks like you didn't actually restore the content, but I feel strongly that the content should not be restored. Calliopejen1 (talk) 22:17, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

@Calliopejen1: You are still alluding to a published source, but not naming it. I think users should be given the benefit of the doubt. To make an allegation of plagiarism is a very serious matter. If you have evidence that it has been plagiarised, then this should be noted - either in the edit summary or on the talk page. But is is not appropriate to make these types of allegations without producing evidence nor to qualify these types of assertions with "probably". @Barbara (WVS): This issue is a little tricky because the content came from a government website (which says that it is public domain) but here the government is actually hosting content created by a third-party. Though the government approves (and has input into) drug labels, the copyright for those labels belongs to the drug companies. I know something about the label-writing process from outside Wikipedia. Anyways, it's just a matter of thinking whether content hosted at a government webpage was actually created by the government. Generally it is, so there is no problem--but this was an exception. Contribution to a CopyVio Investigation that was closed five months ago

It is unclear why you felt the need to comment on a copvio investigation that was concluded five months ago. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Copyright_problems/2016_November_20#20_November_2016) Just to clarify, the discussion in the copyvio complaint proceeded as follows:

1. I placed a copyvio notice on the article, History of marketing, on 18 November, 2016.
2. An unknown editor appears to have removed that notice on or around 19 November, 2016.
3. On 20 November, 2016 I reinstated the copyvio notice.
4. The allegation was investigated by an administrator and on the 13 February, 2017 the outcome was posted. The admin found that the content in question was "backwards copy" (i.e. the source in question had copied the relevant content from wikipedia and not the other way around) and that there was "no cause for concern.
5. After the initial investigation concluded, the copyvio notice should have been removed at this juncture.
6. On 26 March, 2017, a different administrator, who incidentially is a WP editor in residence specialising in identifying plagiarism, cleaned up the content in question by paraphrasing it and noted that there was "no remaining infringement"
7. That should have been the end of the investigation and the application of any solutions as required.
8. Two months after the content was cleaned, and five months after the investigation was concluded, you decide to add to the discussion by noting that something, probably the copyvio notice, was "apparently removed by Bronhiggs [me]." [From the context, it is not entirely clear whether you are alleging that I removed the content or the copyvio notice]

Are you trying to intimate that I removed the copyvio notice before the investigation reached a decision? Do you have the diffs to show when and who removed the notice? If so, why not include them in your commentary? I do not understand why it matters who removed the copyvio notice in relation to an investigation that had been concluded some five months earlier and which explicitly found 'no cause for concern'? It seems like too much of a coincidence that you would want to look into old copvio investigations just a day after we had a debate about some content on the Consumer behaviour article in which you alleged plagiarism, without providing any supporting evidence. Now, why would you want to add this type of commentary to a closed investigation, unless you are trying to make some kind of mischief? BronHiggs (talk) 00:15, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

@BronHiggs: I was noting that you removed the copyright violation. Without a notation for each article under discussion, the day can't be cleared from the backlog. (The investigation wasn't "closed" at the WP:CP page, which was preventing that day from getting archived.) I was giving you credit, nothing more. Then I archived that day's log. @Calliopejen1: The revision history for the page Marketing is somewhat confused as the copyvio tag was added and deleted several times over. In addition, a separate copyvio investigation was mounted for the same article around the same time that I placed my original notice about copyvios. However, I am quite certain that I did not take the notice down. The page editing history shows that the notice was on the page on 18 February, 2017 at 9.16 when Justlettersandnumbers made an edit. (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Marketing&diff=prev&oldid=766127733) The notice had disappeared by 11.21 on the same day when Trappist the monk made an edit. (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Marketing&diff=next&oldid=766127733). Neither edit summary mentions removing the notice, so I cannot say which of them deleted the notice. I have made very few edits to the Marketing page since I started editing on Wikipedia. In my very first few days editing marketing/advertising articles, I made a valiant effort to correct some misinformation on that page but was informed by another editor, who reverted everything I had added, that "some content just doesn't belong on Wikipedia." I also noticed that this same editor reverts most new contributions to this article and continues to do so. At that point, I decided that editing this article was simply a waste of my time and have since occupied my time eiting "low importance" and/or "stub" articles that are not so heavily patrolled and do not have editors exhibiting ownership type behaviours. Having said that, I was aware of the copyright issues on the Marketing article from the beginning of my WP career, it just took me a month or so to figure out the process for bringing these matters to Admin's attention. After that, I was content to let Admin handle the matter. It was not up to me to decide when the issue was closed, but it was clear from comments, made by the investigators on the article's talk page, that the investigation had concluded.I apologise if this seems to be carping, but there are so many bullies on Wikipedia, and many would love to seize on this sort of thing to point the finger. So, I am concerned that I will subsequently be accused of taking down a copyvio notice without the proper authorisation or some other perceived crime. BronHiggs (talk) 08:32, 20 May 2017 (UTC)
@BronHiggs: I agree that the revision history was somewhat confused but from my brief review it looked to me that you resolved the issue. All I was doing was noting that the issue had been resolved so that the day's worth of copyright violation to-dos could be archived. There is not really a formal process for an "investigation"--just a page where issues are listed and interested editors can help out. So even if you were the one who removed the tag there is no problem with this -- to the best of my understanding, the tag can be removed when the offending text is removed. CCI notification

I don't see evidence that the subject has been contacted. I would have guessed this was required. I started to contact the subject about a question, and the subject was away at the time, but has now returned to editing. (talk page watcher) I think so, Sphilbrick, though perhaps there hasn't been a recent reminder (I think the user dislikes talk-page notices and quickly removes them). My notification here was quite a while ago. From what I recall, he/she was helpful and willing to assist with clean-up.
In general, I think a notification that a CCI has actually been opened is a pretty good idea, especially if there's ever going to be another backlog like the one Calliopejen1 has just taken an axe to. As far as I can see in Category:CCI templates and Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Instructions, we don't have such a thing. ANI post-mortem

Hi, Calliopejen1, I'd like to get some feedback and advice from you about ANI procedures generally and also your thoughts about what happened in the ANI case you raised about a user's massive template moves.

Although the thread at ANI which went absolutely nowhere isn't completely dead yet, it's moribund and likely will be dead by the time you read this. I was quite disappointed with the way it ended up, which is to say stillborn, and not because of "win/lose" because I really do believe in consensus even if it goes against my PoV, but rather because I thought that ANI was a place to raise such questions, and that we would get a lively discussion going among admins who would weigh in, possibly with numerous different angles to consider. But after a brief initial flurry of support, there was vociferous opposition from one corner (plus the understandable and civil opposition from the person whose behavior was being questioned), and the hoped-for discussion among multiple admins never really happened, because they never showed up. Instead, we had a duopoly dialog involving myself and one other involved editor which got stuck in a tar-field of strife based largely on factually erroneous claims not germane to your original post, but which managed to effectively derail the discussion.

The ANI thread (which I likely would have started a day or two later, had you not done so) asked for two remedies: a "knock it off" warning, which presumably you would have issued yourself had you not been involved, and a question on how to undo the changes. This almost seemed pro forma to me, and I awaited the scramble of uninvolved admins to jump in and do what was needed. Instead, after the brief flurry of support, crickets on the original topic, and lots of derailing.

In the run-up prior to Rfc and ANI, I feel like I hewed to all the guideline-approved behaviors: I only reverted the user's anti-consensus doc change once, allowing his willingness to edit war about it to install his favored version in the doc which was then referenced in the ANI as "consensus"; I made numerous pleas on his talk page to stop his behavior, rather than trying to massively undo it, which was alluded to at the ANI as WP:SILENCE and thus the new consensus; and finally, engaging in good faith in the ANI thread about the behavior itself, which when not being derailed was attacked as revenge-based and bloodthirsty (not by the unfailingly polite and civil editor whose behavior was the subject of the thread). This seems to lead inexorably to the lesson, "If you have a passion for a PoV in some relatively unwatched corner of the encyclopedia, alter the doc to suit, edit war to keep it, stay calm in discussions, and then just go for your desired change, and go for it massively."

What happened here? Was it just apathy on the part of other admins, or are they just busy with other things, or suffering burnout of their own, preferring to stick to the simple NPAs and uncivil/bullying complaints? Any advice on being a succesful ANI participant, if I decide to put my toe in those waters again? I noticed that you and 3 or 4 other editors or admins supporting your view weighed in once near the top, then not again. Is there some sort of unspoken rule about this? I didn't really wish to keep popping into the thread repeatedly, but I felt unable to just let patently false claims of easily diffable history stand unchallenged, and so I kept returning. Was that a mistake? Any other sage thoughts for encouraging successful ANI outcomes in the future? Thanks for raising the ANI, and in advance for any thoughts you add here. @Mathglot: To be honest, I don't participate much at ANI--I generally just do my own thing in obscure areas and don't run into much conflict. So I don't really have any advice to offer. A couple random thoughts:
  • If Ettrig had kept doing moves, I think he probably would have gotten blocked. The ANI post had the intended effect of making him stop, even if he did not formally agree to do so. This is probably what drove the lack of participation.
  • I was really amazed by TimothyJosephWood's lack of judgment. It was enough to make me take note of his name in case he does an RFA in the future. The failure to distinguish between problematic behavior and content/policy disputes was pretty bizarre.
  • Rollback doesn't require administrative tools -- it's a separate right that many people have. You probably could get rollback yourself; I don't think it's that high a bar. (But I'm not an expert in this by any means!) That may be why we didn't get any interest at ANI once it became clear that Ettrig was no longer moving templates. (Perhaps I shouldn't have raised undoing the changes at all at ANI, and just done it once a broader discussion had proceeded re the changes.)
Anyways, I agree that the administrator response wasn't what I expected. If I had come across this, I would have left Ettrig a message saying that I would block him if he moved any more pages before gaining consensus. And I would have encouraged other editors to revert the changes because they were done without consensus. But I wasn't the one who came across it because I don't hang out at ANI looking for conflict! And the problem of polite but tendentious editors is a well-known one; Ettrig is but one example... Calliopejen1 (talk) 23:55, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

Rollback issues

Hi Calliopejen1, and thanks for the rollback privilege. In looking at the current task, and why so many of the ones on the date I happened to pick (April 21: latest rev, all edits) are not rollbackable due to being one edit too late, I started examining some of them. I found there was a pattern of similar minor follow-up edits with the same edit history by a single user, EP111. Checking EP111's last 2500 edits and spot-checking some of the articles there, this doesn't appear to be abusive, and most of this user's edits, although overlapping a large number of French communes from the template move reversion list, actually go way beyond that list, and are hitting 2-5 articles per minute (none since 7/11). So I think this is likely a completely separate and unrelated activity, but it does effectively block a high percentage of the moves we're trying to undo. I suppose that means we have no recourse but manual revert for those cases? Mathglot (talk) 07:10, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

Ettrig could just have re-added that, of course.
