A quick guide to adding references

I mentioned on the New Users Contribution Helpdesk that you need to add more references.. here's a quick guide to how to do that!

If you find a book, magazine, newspaper article, etc that you want to use as a reference, just type one of the following after the information in the article which the reference is about:

• Newspaper/Magazine article:

<ref>''Title of article'',author of article, (Title of newspaper/magazine, date of article, page(s), column(s))</ref>

• Book:

<ref>''Title of book'', author of book, (publisher, date of publication, page(s))</ref>

• Website:

<ref>[http://web-page-address ''Title of webpage''], author of page, date of page's creation, website name</ref>

For example:

• John Smith was appointed by the UN as an ambassador to Mars in June 1986.<ref>''An article in a well-known newspaper'', John E. Beegood, (The New York Times, 1 August 1987, page 6 col 2)</ref>
• John Smith is regarded as a world expert on creating references.<ref>''How do I create references?'', Met-al Icca, (Heinemann Publishing, 1964, pp. 16-17)</ref>

Then at the bottom of the page, make sure you have the following two lines:

With basic references like this in place, more experienced editors can tidy them up! The hard bit can be finding references!

Encyclopedic tone

I have read the draft article. I suggest that you read a dozen Wikipedia biographies to get a sense of wikipedia's style and depth of coverage. Wikipedia sees the world through reliable secondary sources. Although there detailed facts are about any person, only those that warrant coverage in secondary sources get included in a biography. The fact that a person maintains a blog or twitter feed probably would not fit that definition. If you decide to go ahead with a biography, try to describe the person and his life work from the 10,000 foot level without getting into the weeds of detail.

Similarly, consider contributing to a larger article on the field, like Mayo Clinic or Social networking#Medical applications instead of a specific biography. Racepacket (talk) 12:20, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
