Speedy deletion declined: Abd al-Rahim

Hello Cplakidas. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Abd al-Rahim, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Hi Cplakidas. First of all, it goes with out saying that I defer to your knowledge of Arabic in declining this request. In my opinion, this is something that would better be taken up on the article's talk page. While the transliteration of عبد الرحيم may well more properly be Abd al-Rahim, it would appear that in English, "Abdur Rahim" is what is most commonly cited. Thank you. Shirt58 (talk) 10:19, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

Apologies for the brief summary the script only let me write. There are any number of people, past or present of the name Abdul (and its variant transliterations, including "Abdur" - Abdurrahman Wahid immediately springs to mind) and so on. Could you possibly take this up at Talk:Abdur Rahim? Pete AU aka --Shirt58 (talk) 11:04, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

Busby and Colback

Hello Constantine! Long time no see. I was reading some articles and I saw that here we have Busby (military headdress) and Colback (hat). I'm not a specialist on the topic, but as far I as got, busby and colback are the same thing, with the second designation coming from French, and the French one from Turkish kalpak. The Portuguese dictionaries give this etymology for colback. Busby I still don't know yet. Any clues?--Renato de Carvalho Ferreira (talk) 21:35, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi Renato, indeed! I hope you are doing well, especially in these times. The two do indeed appear to be the same thing. I'd say busby reflects the British POV/usage, while colback (a term I had never before encountered) the French. Nevertheless if they are the same thing, they should be merged, probably under Busby (military headdress) since this is the English WP. The OED has no idea on the origin of the word, but I guess the military headdress was named after the bushy wig of the same name. Constantine 21:54, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

Faux Hakim bi-Amr Allah portrait

Bismillah ar-rahman ar-rahim! :))) Hi, kali mera und hallo. I see you removed the picture captioned as "Caliph al-Hakim". I am fully trusting you on this, so if you could please offer some arguments there on the discussion page and place an appropriate caption under the file, this would hopefully stop the misidentification. Judging by the data there, the image is in use on literally dozens of wikis as a portrait of al-Hakim, from French to Romanian to Russian (they've got enough misinformation already) to... I don't even know what languages those are. Thank you, for this and for your help on Aman (Islam)! Btw, how did you notice the removal of my stub there? Have a great day, Arminden (talk) 10:39, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi Arminden! I went by this, and by the fact that I have never seen this image labelled as a portrait of al-Hakim in any of the numerous books I've read on Muslim history. Constantine 16:35, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
To be clear, it is likely this is a high functionary, possibly even a caliph, portrayed there. I am still looking to find a source that describes this image, unfortunately the books cited in the talk page are unavailable. Constantine 16:37, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you! It's becoming a detective story. Arminden (talk) 16:54, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
@Arminden: i found something: Figure 11 and the accompanying description, saying it is a mid-10th to mid-11th fresco, thus implicitly ruling out any specific identification. I followed up the work cited, Arts of the City Victorious, which IIRC is probably the standard work on the subject of Fatimid art at the moment, and, at least from the snippets available at Google Books, it indeed does not associate the painting with any figure. Constantine 17:18, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
Yes, that's pretty much what was needed. I just took a quick look and found this, which is also quite explicit: maybe the figure represents a prince, but it's in a rather decorative style, "far from realistic", similar to paintings from Samarra and with "clear Persian influences". That makes a portrait unlikely, a prince is not a caliph, and it resembles art from outside the Fatimid realm. Nobody ever mentions al-Hakim. Case closed, I'd say. It is a general motif, hardly a portrait, and if it was ever meant to resemble a particular prince, he could be any among dozens or hundreds. Certainly not a good case (and not even a weak case) for establishing this image as a portrait of al-Hakim, and that's precisely what Wikipedia does: it becomes the much-copied standard for scores of other websites. I'll go ahead and remove it from all the pages it appears on by mistake. Thanks! Arminden (talk) 20:19, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

May songs

Congratulations! - Thank you today for Nizar ibn al-Mustansir, "about a Fatimid prince who should have become imam and caliph at the death of his father, al-Mustansir, in 1094, but was thwarted by the machinations of the powerful vizier al-Afdal. Nizar led a revolt in Alexandria, but was ultimately defeated and killed. Given the close intertwining of religious and political leadership in the Fatimid-sponsored Isma'ili faith, this succession dispute also caused one of the major rifts in Isma'ilism, with the supporters of Nizar (among whom were the famous Assassins) breaking off to form the Nizari sect, against the supporters of the puppet caliph, al-Mu'stali."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:44, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: good question. In the current state it looks as if she is notable chiefly as the mother of her children, rather than independently. Now, as the mother of several notable persons, it might be argued that she is notable too as she had some influence on them, but there also needs to be something that gives her some agency. It is telling that at the moment, 'she' occurs only in the first section of the article, and concerns her descent and early life. She is a passive object in her own article. Even the references appear to be primarily about her children and mention her in passing. Constantine 11:46, 14 May 2022 (UTC)

Do you have them in electronic form? --Werter1995 (talk) 14:07, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

Hi Werter1995! No, I have purchased them, and I don't think there is any complete electronic version out there. Das Reich des Mahdi has been translated into English, and there are snippets of the other two in Google Books, but that's it. But if you want specific information, I can look things up or even scan a few pages for you. Constantine 18:17, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
No, thanks. Just a one Russian millionaire decided to donate money to buy books for Russian Wikipedia articles. They are distributed to those who cannot get electronic editions. I originally ordered them, but my colleagues saw that you often use them in your articles. They asked to know if you have the books in an electronic version, then we wouldn't have to spend money and could wait for another order. But, as we suspected, they are not to be found electronically. So you really have to place an order. Thanks again! --Werter1995 (talk) 18:30, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
@Werter1995: Oh wow, this book donation is a very nice thing though. A bit jealous to be honest :D. A heads up, Das Reich des Mahdi may not be easy to find as it has been long out of print, I got it via ebay. Happy editing! Constantine 18:32, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
I luckily found already a set of three books in one shop in my country, but they are quite expensive, so I didn't want to spend the grant initially. Thank you, and good luck with your editing! --Werter1995 (talk) 18:41, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
Hello, Constantine! We still have a problem with this book. May I ask you to scan or photograph some of the pages and send them by email?

Oswald Boelcke assessment

Hello, I have fixed most of the items you listed. There's still a couple of concerns unanswered, however.

Your knowledge of German language and history has been a great help in improving the article. I anticipate any further input.Georgejdorner (talk) 21:54, 6 May 2022 (UTC)

@Georgejdorner: you're welcome, it was a nice read. I've replied in the assessment thread, only a few outstanding issues remaining and I'll be happy to support. Cheers, Constantine 11:34, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

Hello, again, Other than the request for German language templates, I believe I have dealt with your concerns. I'll do the templates later; while they are cut-and-paste, they are going to take a while. You may want to wait a few days until they are done.

Again, I would like to thank you for errors corrected, comments made, and education dispensed.Georgejdorner (talk) 22:51, 8 May 2022 (UTC)

@Georgejdorner: no worries. Ping me when you're done, I will look it over and likely pass it then. Cheers, Constantine 16:11, 10 May 2022 (UTC)
I am not sure I am inserting the lang templates correctly. Could you please take a look at those I have done so far?Georgejdorner (talk) 23:15, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

I have included a list for some articles that still have no pages. Hence, I would like to ask if you can please have a look at it and help to turn all the reds to blues if possible. Regards. Alas2022 (talk) 20:19, 9 May 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022

New Page Review queue March 2022

Hello Cplakidas,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 817 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 859 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

DYK for Qarmatian invasion of Iraq

On 30 May 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Qarmatian invasion of Iraq, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that during the Qarmatian invasion of Iraq, the Abbasid Caliphate raised an army of more than 40,000 men to protect Baghdad, but did not engage the few thousand Qarmatians in battle? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Qarmatian invasion of Iraq. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Qarmatian invasion of Iraq), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022

New Page Review queue June 2022

Hello Cplakidas,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

Backlog drive

A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

Misc

There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:

Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 12662 articles, as of 22:00, 4 May 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
  • To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
Notes
  1. ^ not including another ~6,000 redirects
  2. ^ The number of weekly reviews reported in the NPP feed includes redirects, which are not included in the backlog we primarily track.

Hellenic parliament resulting from the 1869 election

According to the registry, which is the source that's used in most of these articles about Greek MPs, the parliament that resulted from the 1869 election was in session from 1869 to 1871. New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022

New Page Review queue August 2022

Hello Cplakidas,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.
Reichswehr

"Reichswehr", like "Wehrmacht" (but not "Reichsheer" or "Reichsmarine"), has long since been adopted from the German as an English word. It's in every online dictionary I checked -- and in my 1987 10 kg Webster's Unabridged -- so I don't think it's correct to be putting it into the lang template in the Reichswehr article (especially since it occurs 113 times...). Thank you today for the article, introduced (in 2020): "The Battle of the Defile was one of the largest and most important battles of the late Umayyad period. Along with the Battle of Marj Ardabil a few months earlier (and arguably the Battle of Tours a year later), it marked the end of Umayyad expansion. The casualties suffered also helped undermine the Umayyad regime, increasing disaffection in Khurasan and removing many of the regime's most loyal forces from the metropolitan regions to the frontier, thus paving the way for the Abbasid Revolution. We are also fortunate to have one of the most complete accounts of a battle preserved in al-Tabari, and we can reconstruct events with more detail than usual for the period."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:03, 17 November 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Nasafi

On 12 October 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Nasafi, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Nasafi was the first theologian to introduce concepts from Neoplatonism into Isma'ili doctrine? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Nasafi. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Nasafi), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

Hello Cplakidas,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.

Encyclopaedia Islamica Online

Hi Constantine! Don't you have access to Encyclopaedia Islamica Online via the Wikipedia library? We as a whole Russian Wikipedia cannot access the BRILL website... Werter1995 (talk) 11:56, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi Werter1995 I have access via the University of Vienna. Ping me if you need something. Constantine 16:34, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
@Cplakidas:, I created the same article on Russian Wikipedia as you did on English Wikipedia, Ibn Shirzad. To finish this article I need an article from Enciclopaedia Islamica. Url. Thank. Werter1995 (talk) 19:45, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
By the way, I found a pdf version of Halm's latest book, Kalifen und Assassinen: Ägypten und der Vordere Orient zur Zeit der ersten Kreuzzüge 1074—1171, which I asked you about at the time. I can send it to you if any of your colleagues need it. Werter1995 (talk) 20:36, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
@Werter1995: Will write up the article in English with the Islamica article, which is fairly comprehensive. If you have a pdf of Halm's book, I'd gladly have it; I have a physical copy, but it is a pain to carry around :D Constantine 17:52, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
@Cplakidas:, email me via wikimail, it won't let me attach the pdf file.
I will also have The Buwayhid dynasty of Baghdad by Mafizullah Kabir (see Mu'izz_al-Dawla#Sourses) in a couple of days. I can send it to you if you don't have it. Werter1995 (talk) 18:01, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
 Done. Werter1995 (talk) 18:18, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
Many thanks. Constantine 18:19, 28 October 2022 (UTC)

Pan-Arab colors, Fatimid Dynasty

Thanks for your edits to the flag families article and for the additional sources. The one you linked regarding white as the color of the Fatimid dynasty did not clearly disprove the other sources, and there are many more claiming green was the color. I tried but was unable to find a secondary source that proved white, and not green, was the color of the dynasty. I've made some changes to the article to reflect this, but kept your source. Happy to discuss further, but if you disagree with this decision perhaps we should move it to the article's talk page so others can weigh in. Thanks again for your contribution.  Not A  Witty Fish 15:18, 29 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi NotAWittyFish I have added some additional sources. In short, this is a fairly common (and commonly repeated) misconception, which is puzzling because the contemporary historical sources are unanimous that the Fatimids, like most Alids, used white as their color. This has been debated at Talk:Fatimid Caliphate as well. AFAIK, from some 19th-century sources I encountered a while back, this association of green with the Fatimids began sometime in the late Ottoman period. Constantine 21:20, 29 October 2022 (UTC)

Iraklis Mitsopoulos

your excuse for removing information
that someone attended the same institution as other famous people is not notable, unless they had a connection because of it. Plus other corrections (e.g. Aigio is not in Patras) and cleanup

  • I disagree with the changes you made to the page Iraklis Mitsopoulos. First of all the school he attended in Germany is the specific University Xavier Landerer attended. Why attend the University of Munich? Xavier was also a botanist and most certainty motivated Mitsopoulos to attended the same institution. I believe this is significant information to historians and researchers.<br><br>

Another reason I added prominent figures is to help researchers and academics clarify, which prominent professors or researchers were at the institution at that time. Clarifying this information will help academics and researchers find any research the individual may have participated in while he was at the institution. Nikolaos Ch. Nikolaidis completed a doctoral dissertation I put all that information on Wikipedia and there you can see every faculty member that was associated with that institution is listed as a committee that reviews the students research. From this specific dissertation every faculty member at the institution is associated with each individual student that studies at the educational institution at the time.~~~~

*Secondly, it takes a really long time to find the faculty that were at that school at that time.
    Tzim78 (talk) 17:00, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi Tzim78! I understand it is a laborious effort, but it is not relevant to the person in question. People being at the same institution at the same time is coincidence; it only become relevant if they interacted. To take a somewhat extreme example, there is the well-known trivia that Hitler, Freud, Trotsky, and Tito were all in Vienna at about the same time. Apart from this being mildly ironic, so what? They did not know or influence one another at the time. On Mitsopoulos or any other scientist specifically, if a famous scientist was their teacher, or they were/became friends while at the same university, then this is WP:NOTABLE. Anything else is not. This is simply the way encyclopedia articles are written.
More importantly, there is a policy in place, WP:No original research, which prohibits us, as editors, from adding material that we have researched ourselves or draw or imply our own conclusions. What you are doing is precisely that. If a WP:Reliable source mentions other scientists in an article about a scientist, then someone else, i.e. a qualified, peer-reviewed expert scholar, has judged these relationships to be important. A Wikipedia editor however cannot decide on their inclusion simply as 'a nice thing to have', because their inclusion implies a relationship, and that is original research. Constantine 17:12, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
Understood! Tzim78 (talk) 17:23, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023

Hello Cplakidas,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.

New Source on Ionian Island Units

Hi. I found an open access article by Nicholas Charles Pappas from 2021 which offers a lot of details on the Greek Legion (Septinsular Republic) and bits and pieces on the Albanian Regiment (France) and the 1st Regiment Greek Light Infantry. I added it to each article's further reading section. I am focused on other content right now so I thought you might be interested in taking a look. Catlemur (talk) 18:57, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

Husayn ibn Numayr in Marj Rahit

@Cplakidas: @Cplakidas: Does the source not mention the presence of Husayn ibn Numayr at the Battle of Marj Rahit (684)? Thanks A154 (talk) 07:03, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi A154 not that I know of. Al-Tabari for example mentions his presence in the debates about the nomination of a new caliph, but nothing of his participation in the battle. Constantine 07:42, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

@Cplakidas: hi too. Maybe use another source. Perhaps the premier sources have been translated. The source in question could be something like Al Kamil fi al Tarikh by Ibn al-Athir or Ansab al ashraf by al Baladhuri. Given that Bani Kinda participated in the battle and one of their leaders, Malik ibn Hubayra was also present, it is not known whether Husayn actually participated or whether he chose neutral. Greek Military Veterinary Terms

I want to write an article about the Hellenic Army Veterinary Service but I am confused about how I am supposed to translate Greek ranks like επικτηνίατρος into English. Any ideas? Aside from that I think bringing the Greek front of the First Balkan War to Good Topic status is achievable, especially if we get some people from Greek WP to participate. Cheers. Catlemur (talk) 18:13, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi Catlemur! επικτηνίατρος would be Major of the Veterinary Corps, as English does not have specific titles for the different corps/services (unlike German, where I think we got this from). On the Balkan Wars, I will be glad to help. The quality of the topic and its articles is generally low... I have, as you know, the abridged Greek army history, which is amazingly detailed even so. Constantine 18:55, 30 January 2023 (UTC)
A local library was gifted a lot of the official Greek army history books recently. For the Balkan Wars they have all the tomes except for the first one which covers the Macedonian front operations during the first war. But they have both the abridged tome and the medical services one (which has Greek army casualty estimates for each battle). Unfortunately they do not loan books so I have to bring my laptop there and I have a weird work schedule so that will slow the whole process down. Right now there are 13 articles about battles on the Greek front. 5 are Good articles and I nominated Battle of Sorovich and Battle of Driskos at GAN as well. I don't know if there are more battles to be written about like the Battle of Gribovo, or they should just be mentioned in passing.--Catlemur (talk) 19:48, 30 January 2023 (UTC)
@Catlemur: I definitely think that there are some battles of some importance still missing, such as Gribovo, Elassona, Ostrovo, the early attempts to capture Ioannina, just off the top of my head. I also want to add more info on the naval aspect of the war somewhere, and some more neglected events like the Icarian Revolution or the capture of Samos could also get a proper treatment. Constantine 21:31, 30 January 2023 (UTC)
Speaking of Greek terms, what would be the appropriate translation for "τάγμα των μετόπισθεν"?--Catlemur (talk) 03:48, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
@Catlemur: a direct translation would be 'rear areas battalion', but depending on context, it could be something like 'rear area protection/security battalion', 'support battalion', or 'depot/replacement battalion' (for regimental depots). Constantine 07:38, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Original Barnstar
With this barnstar, Ghazaalch and I gratefully recognize your valuable and thoughtful feedback and your commitment to the review process, without which Muhammad al-Jawad would have not passed its GA nomination. We look forward to upgrading key Shia articles with your help. Albertatiran (talk) 09:17, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
Thank you both, Albertatiran and Ghazaalch. TBH it was quite a bit more in-depth than a 'regular' GA review, but I think it was a good thing for all of us, and for the article. I am looking forward to your next articles on Shia figures! Constantine 16:10, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
