Category:Divided regions

Hi, further to my edit on Cyprus (disambiguation) I see that there are a half dozen other dab cases like this in the category. I'll go ahead and try to fix these too. BTW on Cyprus, I didn't actually proceed to add the category onto Cyprus as it belongs to Category:Cyprus which is already a subcat of Divided regions. List of Persian poets and authors

Hello. You are not the first Irredentist Point-Of-View warrior and you won't be the last. Please don't try to pull the wool over our eyes by framing a question like this. You have repeatedly deleted (here, here, here and here) the names of countries (other than Iran) from that article, thus giving us the impression that you don't think any of those poets/authors are from anywhere but Iran. Your clever question is designed to trip me up (***yawn***) but here is your answer. The names of the countries have to stay because the places that some of those poets/authors were born in are now in other countries or were never part of Iran/Persia. We are not going to follow your preferred option because of WP:NPOV which asks for articles to be neutral. I am not going to go through the whole list but here are a few examples:

• Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī, almost certainly born in Khwarezm, Uzbekistan
• Shahid Balkhi, born in Balkh, Afghanistan
• Rudaki, born in Panjakent, Tajikistan
• Muhammad al-Bukhari, born in Bukhara, Uzbekistan
• Unsuri, almost certainly born in Balkh, Afghanistan
• Rabi'a Balkhi, born in Balkh, Afghanistan
• Asjadi, born in either Merv, Turkmenistan or Herat, Afghanistan
• Kisai Marvazi, born in Merv, Turkmenistan
• Khwaja Abdullah Ansari, born in Herat, Afghanistan
• and one that I researched extensively for Wiki-purposes - Ali Hujwiri, born in Ghazni, Afghanistan and died in Lahore, Pakistan.

Please don't also give us the same tired old rhetoric of Iranian being Persian and Persian being Iranian. We have seen enough of these dances to grow weary of the tune. The incontrovertible fact is that some of these poets and authors were born in places that are now part of countries other than Iran. As a courtesy, I would recommend that you familiarise yourself with WP:3RR, which means you SHOULD NOT revert any article more than three times in 24 hours (with certain exceptions). I'm not going to make a fuss about it but you might not be so lucky next time, so exercise some caution please. I am going to restore the original version but if you insist on removing those countries names, I suggest you take it up on the article's talkpage before you make any more edits. → Green Giant ^Talk 19:47, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

Shilmani Article Edits and Deletions

I see some parts of Shilmani article are deleted.I agree for the deletion of some of them like "Famous Shilmani and their locations". But some like, Historian research and Openions and Genealogy sections are also deleted. I am confused, what to do for these sections. Thats why I deleted Etymology section today as I cannot provide sources other than online websites for the reference and citations. Please guide me that some time we observe and study things from practical life, so why not accept those facts which are obvious and searchable on Google. As I gave an example for "Shelman" Surename of Israel tribe who live in Argentina and Russia. Isn't it will be enough evidence on the web, because instead of searching a book and going to that country it is easy to give reference link.

I have lost all of my work and research on Shilmani article after you restricted me to make editing in this article and adding personal research. I am scared if you and me will delete sections from this article every day, week or month, then I am not sure that after couple of months this article will be there on Wikipedia and the Shilmani tribe will be alive there in Pakistan,Afghanistan Iran, India, Libya and other countries.

If this is the wrong place to put my comments, then please tell me about the right place and procedure for talks and comments.

WikiCup 2014 January newsletter

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

• 12george1 (submissions) and TropicalAnalystwx13 (submissions) were the first people to score, for the good article Tropical Storm Bret (1981) and its good article review respectively. 12george1 was also the first person to score in 2012 and 2013.
• Sven Manguard (submissions) scored the first ITN points for 2014 North American polar vortex.
• WonderBoy1998 (submissions) scored points for an early good topic, finishing off Wikipedia:Featured topics/She Wolf.
• TheAustinMan (submissions) scored the first bonus points of the competition, for his work on Typhoon Vera.
• Igordebraga (submissions) has scored the highest number of bonus points for a single article, for the high-importance Jurassic Park (film).

Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.

Hello, Green Giant. I'm a little curious what you were up to at Talk:Seychelles yesterday with those 21 consecutive edits. Aside from cluttering up my watchlist—not exactly a capital offense, I admit—you left the talk page with no remaining threads, which seems contrary to standard archiving practice. I'm unfamiliar with OneClickArchiver, but I must say the name seems like a misnomer. Am I missing something? Rivertorch (talk) 18:46, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello and thanks for asking. I have started archiving as part of a personal plan to help improve articles on sub-Saharan African countries because frankly they don't get enough attention from Western editors, other than reverting vandalism. I can't remember who raised the issue but I recall reading a review of Wikipedia by the MIT Technology Review (October 2013). The article had stinging criticism about the skewed priorities of Wikipedia editors. Please read the review and note the bit that says "its entries on Pokemon and female porn stars are comprehensive, but its pages on female novelists or places in sub-Saharan Africa are sketchy". Since I find sub-Saharan Africa more interesting, I decided to make an effort in this area, just as soon as I'd finished my other to-do stuff. I'm not a newbie to the area though, but mainly my edits have been to Zambia (click here to check). The way I see it, the core of the problem is that when new editors look at the sub-Saharan country talkpages and see discussions from several years ago, it doesn't create the best impression i.e. nobody has bothered to tidy the talkpages up. My intention is to archive most of the older comments in sub-Saharan country talkpages "region by region" and then put the articles themsleves through Reflinks/Checklinks to see if they can be brought up to date. I was going to do this for "Eastern African" countries today but I've been distracted by discussions on other wikis. As for archiving practice, there are no clear cut rules about when to archive, although the guidelines at WP:ARCHIVE suggest it can happen when the talkpage is more than 75KB or there are more than 10 main sections. When I looked at Talk:Seychelles yesterday, it had 20 sections, with the earliest being from almost seven and a half years ago. The most recent was from almost six months ago, which I assumed had been concluded because at the end was a tick that you added. As for the archiver, it is a fairly new script written by User:Equazcion to make archiving more easier, especially given that many talkpages don't have automated archiving. Well, you just might be preaching to the choir when you talk about our skewed encyclopedic priorities, and kudos for taking on the task of improving our coverage of sub-Saharan Africa. You're absolutely right there's no rule about when to archive. Personally, I think it's preferable to leave a thread or two on a talk page the way MiszaBot (or rather its successors) usually do—at least that's the way that auto-archiving is generally set up. But I suppose it's a judgment call, and if you've been studying these articles and their talk pages, your judgment is probably better than mine. Thanks much for the detailed response! Is Knoema website allowed in Wikipedia ?

Hello and thank you for raising this matter. Basically all external links have to comply with the external links guidelines, even if they are the most reliable sources. In the case of Knoema, one user added external links to numerous articles, all of which were subpages of the Knoema website. This is referred to as link spamming and is not allowed on Wikipedia. The website itself has a similar aim to Wikipedia and that is a good thing but it is a questionable source because it appears to be a wiki although it doesn't say so, and using it for citations would be as bad as using another Wikipedia article. It would be better to avoid citing Knoema and instead cite the sources they got their data from. Green Giant supports NonFreeWiki (talk) 14:50, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello. Looking at these, I can't see why you're nominating them as having an unacceptable license - they seem to be GFDL/CC-BY-SA-3.0, which is a perfectly acceptable license. I'm not sure they're particularly useful images, but I don't think they fall under CSD - it would probably be better to take them to a deletion discussion. Thanks. WikiCup 2014 February newsletter

And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:

1. Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Wikipedia. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in Treasury Note (1890–91).
2. Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
3. WikiRedactor (submissions), another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include Sky Ferreira, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus song).

Other competitors of note include:

• Hahc21 (submissions), who helped take Thirty Flights of Loving through good article candidates and featured article candidates, claiming the first first featured article of the competition.
• Prism (submissions), who claimed the first featured list of the competition with Natalia Kills discography.
• Cwmhiraeth (submissions), who takes the title of the contributor awarded the highest bonus point multiplier (resulting in the highest scoring article) of the competition so far. Her high-importance salamander, now a good article, scored 108 points.

After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

In regards to the film have added to source to it and change it. I removed the corruption because an edit war broke out and people thought it from the way it was written it was POV and hatred for the current administration. I was going to look into it more and add the proper info. Others and I are working hard to put proper information in that article without it being biased. • Copyright violation is one of the most serious matters on Wikipedia. Please read WP:CV carefully and you will see that copyright materi has to be removed immediately. The material you added contained lengthy sections from other websites. It's as simple as that. If you can write a film section without exact copying or even close paraphrasing, that will be fine.

I was closing old discussions at WP:NFCR and I just finished closing the discussion about the image File:Æon Flux promotional film poster.jpg and saw that it was also tagged in a recent WP:FFD. I believe you were just trying to expedite the process of having an image that is incompatible with our policies deleted, but having two discussions on the same topic is highly undesirable. In this case it obviously was not an issue, but all two often two separate discussions end up happening (especially when the two aren't linked) and can have different outcomes. Regarding the etymology of Ethiopia

I now understand the rules regarding Wikipedia's copyright infringement but, what exactly is there to do if the citations quoted as "fact" are not actually fact but are skewed by euro-centric historical inaccuracies and that the problem regarding some "fact" that is posted on the Internet and that there is nothing else posted on the Internet that contradicts that "fact", then that is "authoritative" to Wikipedia? WikiCup 2014 March newsletter

A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato. Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.

With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Please Remove Copyright Tags on Holy Shrine Images

Hello Green Giant,
You have recently added tags to a lot of images I have uploaded to Wikipedia claiming they could be copyright violations. This is not so as these images have been taken by the administrative bodies of the Holy Shrines in Iraq, they are a public organization and not for profit. All these images are public domain and free for everyone inside and outside Iraq to use. I have provided sufficient proof for this and there is no reason to flag them. I am well aware of Wikipedia's media policies and non of these images breach any copyrights. Please remove the tags, if need be I can supply more info if you are still unsure.

Thank you for your prompt response. As far as I could see you did include the general website names but not specifically which page you got the images from. After searching I could not see anything that suggested these images were free, on the contrary they all had copyright notices. The proof that you have to provide is a weblink to which page you got them from (so just saying "AlKafeel Global Network" isn't enough). More importantly the source page has to have a clear message stating which images are free for use. If all of them are free, then the website has to make that absolutely clear. We cannot rely on just the uploader saying they are free. Alternatively the owners of the relevant websites could send an email to "permissions-commons@wikimedia.org" and use the format set out at c:Commons:OTRS#Declaration_of_consent_for_all_enquiries. Usually this takes some time, maybe even weeks because the OTRS people are backlogged.

Don't take it personally, because you are not alone in this as many users have had this problem at some point and it is a steep learning curve but it is essential. In the meantime, just take greater care when uploading new images. Make sure there is a Creative Commons licence on the webpage where you get the image from. If in doubt, don't upload it. In this case these images are public domain, but even in the case they weren't there would not be a problem because Iraq and the US have no copyright elations so thins that have a copyright in Iraq do not have one in the US. I understand your argument here but Commons policy is to only host files that are:

• explicitly freely licensed and
• in the public domain in the United States and in the source country of the work.

Unfortunately for those images, Iraqi copyright law means they are copyright images for either 25 or 50 years after the death of the copyright holder. We need that written permission from an email address at that website or they could put a free licence tag such as CC-BY-SA 3.0 next to the webpage where the photos are located. It simply is not enough for you to say that the images are free. I was happy to note that some of your uploads are your own work, and most of the others at least you added roughly where you got them from even if it wasn't as precise as needed. I have sent an email to the website asking for permission (I hope to get a response soon) and also take note that all these images have been originally published on the website I provided. If you find them anywhere else be sure they have taken it from the websites links that I have provided on the description page. The website link I have provided are the official websites of the shrines. Also I have been to these shrines and will tell you that people are explicitly not allowed to take electronics or cameras into the shrine. WikiCup 2014 April newsletter

Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from Reid,iain james (submissions), tiger from Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to Czar (submissions) and Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.

192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. • Hello Yashpal. Basically we have to assume that everything on the internet is copyright unless there is a clear notice stating that it is free. The website you linked to above sags "All rights reserved" at the bottom of the page so it definitely isn't public domain. Please note that public domain is a confusing term and it refers to something being owned by society in general rather than a specific person. Just because a website can be viewed by the public does not mean it is in the public domain. It is owned by the person who set it up or wrote it.

The best way to contribute is to write about the embassy rather than for the embassy. So rather than repeating the history that their website gives, you should look for mentions in reliable other places such as major newspapers (including offline and online), books written by credible people, government reports etc. If you want an example, look at the article about Lihou, which I have helped to become a Good Article. It has about 40 separate references each of which has a "fact" about the island but the Wikipedia article writes about those "facts" without using the same words. I hope that helps. WikiCup 2014 June newsletter

After an extremely close race, Round 3 is over. 244 points secured a place in Round 4, which is comparable to previous years- 321 was required in 2013, while 243 points were needed in 2012. Pool C's Godot13 (submissions) was the round's highest scorer, mostly due to a 32 featured pictures, including both scans and photographs. Also from Pool C, Casliber (submissions) finished second overall, claiming three featured articles, including the high-importance Grus (constellation). Third place was Pool B's , whose contributions included featured articles Russian battleship Poltava (1894) and Russian battleship Peresvet. Pool C saw the highest number of participants advance, with six out of eight making it to the next round.

The round saw this year's first featured portal, with Sven Manguard (submissions) taking Portal:Literature to featured status. The round also saw the first good topic points, thanks to 12george1 (submissions) and the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season. This means that all content types have been claimed this year. Other contributions of note this round include a featured topic on Maya Angelou's autobiographies from Figureskatingfan (submissions), a good article on the noted Czech footballer Tomáš Rosický from Cloudz679 (submissions) and a now-featured video game screenshot, freely released due to the efforts of Sven Manguard (submissions).

The judges would like to remind participants to update submission pages promptly. This means that content can be checked, and allows those following the competition (including those participating) to keep track of scores effectively. This round has seen discussion about various aspects of the WikiCup's rules and procedures. Those interested in the competition can be assured that formal discussions about how next year's competition will work will be opened shortly, and all are welcome to voice their views then. I saw that you flagged the logo that I uploaded for the executive DBA article. I appreciate your efforts to keep Wikipedia safe from copyright violations. I have two issues with your actions. One, I have been given notice on Friday night that the image will be removed on Saturday. Does that not seem a bit hasty? What if somebody is in Las Vegas for the weekend and does not have access to a computer, as I am? Also, do you not think that you should consider whether the organization will benefit from having their logo on their entry before deciding to remove it? I assume you are the uploader, but apologies if you're not. The notice period is actually seven days, i.e. next Saturday. The file was uploaded more than 10 weeks ago. Don't you think that is more than enough time for permission to be sent? Frankly I couldn't care less whether the organization could benefit from their logo being here because I'm not employed by them and Wikipedia is not about free advertising. My concerns are that at least some Wikipedia rules ought to be followed despite WP:IAR. If you are struggling to get permission, then the alternative is to reduce the size of the image and claim it as a fair use, with a fair use rationale. You don't need any permission for that. Anyway what are you doing in Vegas without computer access? I'm often away from home and use my phone to do basic editing. Original consent was sent on June 11 2014, in the form of a forwarded email from the logo creator, with the logo attached. In response to more stringent copyright proof requested by Ticket#2014061110019413, a filled out copy of the Wikipedia:CONSENT template has been requested from the logo copyright holder. Will advise when it has been sent. I didn't realize that I had more time, when I read the note on my phone, using Las Vegas Internet access. Also, my vacation plans to Las Vegas don't usually include updating Wikipedia entries. Unlike some non-Americans who are blessed with 5-6 weeks vacation every year, (or 8 year olds with potentially limitless free time, as your profile claims you to be), we have to make our 2-3 weeks count! ;-)Timtempleton (talk) 23:12, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Editing files with {{OTRS pending}}

Hi! When you edit files with {{OTRS pending}}, such as File:Typical match day at Cairnlea FC.jpg, the file is moved out of Category:Items pending OTRS confirmation of permission for over 60 days and back into Category:Items pending OTRS confirmation of permission, making it look as if it is a recently uploaded file pending OTRS confirmation. It is therefore a good idea to avoid editing files with {{OTRS pending}} unless absolutely necessary so that they don't remain on the project longer than necessary, should no permission arrive. --Stefan2 (talk) 16:51, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

There is no way for the template to see when the template was added unless there is a date parameter as on Commons. Old files with {{OTRS pending}} are typically deleted anyway, so there's little point in cleaning up the text. --Stefan2 (talk) 17:24, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

If people just stay away from editing the file information pages, there is no problem. There is one problem with introducing a dated template. On Commons, people are asked to use {{subst:OP}}, but when people follow that instruction on Wikipedia, the editor instead inserts a Harry Potter template. If we want a dated template, we would have to call it something else, risking to cause even more confusion. It is confusing enough that people have to check Special:WhatLinksHere/Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix once in a while to find files where someone has used {{subst:OP}} in the meaning {{OTRS pending}}. Apart from a couple of cover images for that book, the only files pointing at the article should be malformed "OTRS pending" ones. --Stefan2 (talk) 21:41, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Changing the source

Please don't change the source as you did with File:Iomart Group plc logo.jpg. The text "Was sent to me by the owner" means that the file was sent to the uploader using some unspecified method, for example by sending an envelope with a floppy disk to the uploader. On the other hand, {{Email from author}} indicates a very specific method for sending files and is not necessarily the correct method. Also, in cases such as this, where a file has been tagged with {{OTRS pending}} for several months, I would guess that the uploader often just has clicked on some buttons in an upload wizard without knowing what he is doing, meaning that we can't trust any of the information on the file information page. --Stefan2 (talk) 21:16, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 August newsletter

The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:

1. Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
2. Casliber (submissions) is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
3. Czar (submissions) was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
4. Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
5. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
6. 12george1 (submissions) is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
7. Sturmvogel 66 (submissions), the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
8. Bloom6132 (submissions), the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.

We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists. Matty.007 (submissions), ThaddeusB (submissions), WikiRedactor (submissions), Figureskatingfan (submissions), Yellow Evan (submissions), Prism (submissions) and Cloudz679 (submissions) have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.

There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The Stub Contest will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the GA Cup, which the organisers plan to run next year. This competition is based on the WikiCup and aims to reduce the good article review backlog.

There is now a thread for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? Signups for next year's competition will be open soon; we will be in touch. If, at this stage of the competition, you are keen to help the with the WikiCup, please do what you can to participate in review processes. Our finalists will find things much easier if the backlogs at good article candidates, featured article candidates, featured picture candidates and the rest are kept at a minimum. WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - September 2014 Welcome to the GA Cup! In less than 72 hours, the competition will begin! Before you all start reviewing nominations we want to make sure you understand the following: This is a friendly competition so we don't want any cheating/breaking of the rules. However, if you do believe someone is going against the rules, notify the judges. All the rules are listed here. If you are a new editor or new to reviewing Good article nominations, it is imperative that you read the 4 essays/guides listed under FAQ #4. If you do not understand something, ask a judge for clarification ASAP! The competition is not entirely about who can review the most nominations. Per the "Scoring" page, there is different criteria in which you can earn more points. Theoretically, you could review 10 nominations and have 80 points but another user could have reviewed 5 nominations and have 100 points. Yes, we want you to review as many nominations as you can as this will greatly increase the number of points you earn, but you must also keep in mind that every single review will be looked over by a judge. If we find that you are "rubber-stamping" (in other words, the review is not complete but you still passed/failed the article) you may be disqualified without warning. Also, rather than creating a long list on what to remember, make sure you have read the "Scoring", "Submissions", and "FAQ" pages. Now for the one question that we guarantee you have: how on earth will the rounds work??? Yes, we never actually had a solid platform regarding how the rounds would work because we had no idea how many people would sign-up. Even though the competition is about to begin, because sign-ups are still open, it is impossible to say exactly how each round will work. As of now, we can confirm that Round 1 will have everyone compete in one big pool. Depending on the final number of participants after sign-ups close, a to-be-determined number of participants will move on (highest scorers will move on) to Round 2. We guarantee that the top 15 will move on, so make sure you aim for those top positions! Moving on to Round 2, participants will be split into pools of even numbers (for example, every pool will have 6 participants). The pools will be determined by a computer program that places participants by random. More details regarding Round 2 will be sent out at the end of Round 1. It is important to note that the GA Cup will run on UTC time, so make sure you know what time that is for where you live! On that note, the GA Cup will start on October 1 at 0:00:01 UTC; Round 1 will end on October 29 at 23:59:59 UTC; Round 2 will commence on November 1 at 0:00:01 UTC. All reviews must be started after or on the start time of the round. If you qualify for Round 2 but do not complete a review before the end of Round 1, the review can be carried over to Round 2; however that review will not count for Round 1. Prior to the start of the the second round, participants who qualify to move on will be notified. Finally, if you know anyone else that might be interesting in participating, let them know! Sign-ups close on October 15 so there is still plenty of time to join in on the action! If you have any further questions, contact one of the judges or leave a message here. On October 16 or 17, 2014, check the Pools page as we will post the exact number of participants that will move on to the next round. Because this number will be determined past the halfway mark of Round 1, we encourage you to aim to be in the top 15 as the top 15 at the end of the round are guaranteed to move on. WikiCup 2014 September newsletter

In one month's time, we will know our WikiCup 2014 champion. Newcomer Godot13 (submissions) has taken a strong lead with a featured list (historical coats of arms of the U.S. states from 1876) and a raft of featured pictures. Reigning champion Cwmhiraeth (submissions) is in second place with a number of high-importance biology articles, including new FA Isopoda and new GA least weasel. Casliber (submissions), who is in his fifth WikiCup final, is in third, with featured articles Pictor and Epacris impressa.

Signups for the 2015 WikiCup are open. All Wikipedians, new and experienced, are warmly invited to sign up for the competition. Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may also like to sign up for the GA Cup, a new WikiCup-inspired competition which revolves around completing good article reviews. GA Cup -Round 1 Newsletter

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Round 1 As we move into the middle of Round 1, we wanted to report some of the lessons we've learned thus far, as well as announce a major rule change going into Round 2, which begins November 1. Remember, sign-ups for this year's Cup ends on September 15. Thus far, we're very happy with the results of the competition. One of our major goals, reducing the long backlog at GAN, is well on the way to being accomplished, mostly due to the enthusiastic efforts of Jonas Vinther, who has earned over 250 points. Over 80 reviews have been made thus far. Thank you all for your efforts and for your part in making the GA Cup a success. However, this is the inaugural year of the GA Cup, so there have been some unforeseen circumstances that have come up. One has been a glaring inadequacy with the rules, which the judges feel makes the competition unfair. As a result, there will be a major change in the rules, starting at the beginning of Round 2: Your review must provide feedback/suggestions for improvement, and then you must wait until the nominator has responded and all issues/suggestions have been resolved before you can pass the article. Failure to follow this rule will result in disqualification. What this means is that you must provide some feedback to the article's nominator, and must wait for him or her to respond before passing the article. If the nominator has not responded in the standard 7 days, you can fail the article. We're instituting this rule change to prevent the possibility of competitors passing articles for the sake of passing articles (or failing them) and to gain more points. We believe that the change will make it more fair to all competitors in the GA Cup. Also, in case you haven't noticed, we increased the "guarantee" for Round 2 to 25 participants. The exact number will be decided in the near future. We thank your for your participation, and for your flexibility and understanding as we learn what works and what doesn't work in this competition. WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Round 1 Hello GA Cup competitors! The judges have learned a great deal in this first part of the competition, and we appreciate your patience with us as we've figured out what works and what doesn't work. As we reported in our last newsletter, an inadequacy in the scoring system has been illuminated in the past 15 days, which has resulted in a major change in the rules. It has also resulted in one withdrawal. To ensure fairness, we've decided to further increase the number of participants moving onto Round 2. Everyone who has reviewed at least one article will automatically be moved forward, and will be placed in pools. You have until October 29 to take advantage of this opportunity. GA Cup - Round 2

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Round 2 Greetings, GA Cup competitors! Wednesday saw the end of Round 1. Jaguar took out Round 1 with an amazing score of 238. In a tight race for second, Peacemaker67 and Ritchie333 finished second and third with 152 and 141 points, respectively. Two users have scored the maximum five bonus points for article length (60,000 characters+). Anotherclown reviewed Spanish conquest of Yucatán (77,350 characters) and MrWooHoo reviewed Communist Party of China (76,740 characters). The longest review was by Bilorv who reviewed Caldas da Rainha. The review was approximately 22,400 characters which earned s/he two bonus points (20, 000 - 29, 999 characters). In Round 1, 117 reviews were completed, making the first round of the GA Cup a success! A total of 86 articles were removed from the backlog during the month of October! We hope to see all remaining users fighting it out in Round 2 so we can lower the backlog as much as possible. To qualify for the second round, one completed review was needed, which 28 users accomplished. Participants have been randomly put into 7 pools of 4; the top 2 in each pool will move onto Round 3. There will also be one wildcard. This means that the participant who comes in 15th place (all pools combined) will also move on. Round 2 will start on November 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and end on November 29 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Round 2 and the pools can be found here Also, remember that a major rule change will go into affect starting on November 1, which marks the beginning of Round Two. Round 1 displayed a weakness in the rules, which we are correcting with this new rule. We believe that this change will make the competition more inherently fair. The new rule is: Your review must provide feedback/suggestions for improvement, and then you must wait until the nominator has responded and all issues/suggestions have been resolved before you can pass the article. Failure to follow this rule will result in disqualification. The judges will strictly enforce this new rule. Good luck and remember to have fun! WikiCup 2014: The results

The 2014 WikiCup champion is Godot13 (submissions), who flew the flag of the Smithsonian Institution. This was Godot13's first WikiCup competition and, over the 10 months of the competition, he has produced (among other contributions) two featured lists and an incredible 292 featured pictures, including architectural photographs and scans of historical documents. Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 and 2013 WikiCup champion, came in second, having written a large number of biology-related articles. Casliber (submissions), WikiCup finalist every year since 2010, finished in third.

GA Cup - Round 3

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Round 3 Greetings, all! We hope that all of our American GA Cup competitors had an enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday. Friday saw the end of Round 2. Two from 7 pools, plus a tie score and one wildcard (16 in all) moved onto the next round. Some pools were more competitive than others. Round 2's highest scorer was 3family6, with an impressive 255 points. Good888, who came in second place overall with 202 points, reviewed the most articles (19). The wildcard slot for Round 2 went to Jaguar. Congrats to all! Round 3 will have 15 competitors in three pools. The key to moving forward in Round 2 seemed to be reviewing articles with the longest nomination dates; almost everyone who moved forward nominated at least one article from the pink nomination box (20 points) or reviewed articles that had languished in the queue for over 5 months (18 points). The GA Cup was also used to promote a group of articles about The Boat Race, a rowing race held annually since 1856 between Oxford University and Cambridge University, on the River Thames. 17 Boat Race articles were promoted to GA in November. In Round 2, 110 reviews were completed, as compared to 117 in Round 1. The GA Cup continues to be a success. This month, we got a report from User:AmericanLemming, who maintains the GA statistics, that in October, there was a net gain of 201 articles nominated for GA. He thought that more open GANs could mean that more editors are submitting more of their articles to the GAN process. In addition, having a high-throughput of GANs means that more articles get reviewed more quickly, which reduces the frustration of potentially waiting several months to get an article reviewed. The activity in Round 2 of the GA Cup seems to bear that out. It's our hope that the competitors' enthusiasm continues in Round 3, and we can continue to make a difference in helping more editors improve their articles. For Round 3, participants have been randomly put in 3 pools of 5 contestants each; the top two in each pool progressing, as well as the top 2 of all remaining users. Round 3 will start on December 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and end on December 29 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Round 3 and the pools can be found here. There have been a couple of rules clarifications to announce. We're slightly changing the wording to the second bullet in "General rules", which now reads: You may only score points in a round for reviews which have been completed in that round. We're also including this clarification: Only reviews started during the competition are eligible. We have also lost a judge, so there are now only three judges. WikiCup 2015 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and may we wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2015 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. We have a few important announcements concerning the future of the WikiCup.

• We would like to announce that Josh (J Milburn) and Ed (The ed17), who have been WikiCup judges since 2009 and 2010 respectively, are stepping down. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but the main one is time. Both Josh and Ed have found that, over the previous year, they have been unable to devote the time necessary to the WikiCup, and it is not likely that they will be able to do this in the near future. Furthermore, new people at the helm can only help to invigorate the WikiCup and keep it dynamic. Josh and Ed will still be around, and will likely be participating in the Cup this following year as competitors, which is where both started out.
• In a similar vein, we hope you will all join us in welcoming Jason (Sturmvogel 66) and Christine (Figureskatingfan), who are joining Brian (Miyagawa) to form the 2015 WikiCup judging team. Jason is a WikiCup veteran, having won in 2010 and finishing in fifth this year. Christine has participated in two WikiCups, reaching the semi-finals in both, and is responsible for the GA Cup, which she now co-runs.
• The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. While it may be impossible to please everyone, the judges will make every effort to ensure that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

Hi,

I just saw some editor adding pictures to Arsenal F.C. supporters. First File:Acsc.jpg that was removed due to obvious tv logo, and now he added File:Acsc2.jpg which I believe is the same image (maybe cut) even if I did not see first one. You can (if you zoom) see the scoreline on top of the image. I am not sure how to tag and remove image so could you take a look at it? It seems like this editor dont know how to add images. GA Cup - Round 4 (Semi-Finals)

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Round 4 Happy New Year! We hope that all of our GA Cup competitors had an enjoyable and safe holiday season. Monday saw the end of Round 3. Eight contestants moved forward to Round 4—the top two contestants from each of Round 3's three pools and the top two participants of all remaining users. It was an exciting competition, especially towards the end. Round 3's highest scorer was Jaguar, Round 2's wildcard, with an impressive 305 points, the highest score in the GA Cup thus far. Pool B was the closest race; J_Milburn and Cwmhiraeth switched places a few times in the final hours of the competition, although J Milburn edged out Cwmhiraeth by just 9 points. Pool A was, by far, the most competitive; four out of five moved onto Round 4, and its competitors earned a cumulative 935 points and reviewed 59 articles. Ritchie333, who came in second overall with 255 points, reviewed the most articles (17). Peacemaker67 and Wizardman earned the two wildcard slots, with 184 and 154 points, respectively. Congrats to all! 114 articles were reviewed this round, as compared to 110 in Round 2 and 117 in Round 1. The key to success in Round 3, like in Round 2, was reviewing articles with the longest nomination dates; everyone who moved forward reviewed articles from the pink nomination box (20 points) or reviewed articles that had languished in the queue for over 5 months (18 points). Many of these articles had languished because their nominators had left Wikipedia and had little chance of passing to GA, so our competitors provided a great service by helping remove them from the queue. Also as in Round 2, The Boat Race articles proved to be popular review choices, with 10% of all the articles reviewed in December. We appreciate the competitors' continued enthusiasm, even during the busy holiday season. At least one competitor even reviewed articles while preparing for a holiday meal! For Round 4, participants have been randomly put in 2 pools of 4 contestants each. The top two in each pool will progress to the finals, as well as the top participant (5th place) of all remaining users. The semi-finals will start on January 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and end on January 29 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Round 4 and the pools can be found here. We received some excellent feedback about how to improve the GA Cup in the future, including the definition of "quickfails" and the use of pools, which we'll seriously consider as we move forward. As a result of this feedback and the experience we've gained, there will be some changes to the rules come next years GA Cup. Good luck to all our semi-finalists!
