thanks for being in touch

Hi Jim, I am hoping I can ask your help. I am devastated as I worked for three hours adding 27 references to the Let It Be Art draft page and took care of the copyright information needed and adding it all to the draft and it said to publish these changes and I pushed the button - it all disappeared on me. I had previously addressed the other page that told me about a speedy deletion and explained why the page should not be deleted. And I went to work on remedying the situation. But now I can't find all my work and it appears a blank page was submitted when I thought everything I had worked on was being placed in for review. Is there any way to retrieve it? The solo play, Let It Be Art!, has represented the United States in many international theater festivals in its 20th year, including the World Theatre Olympics and has had 3 critically-acclaimed Off-Broadway productions. I would be most grateful for help and assistance. FitwithJanFitwithjan (talk) 19:38, 9 September 2019 (UTC)

Hello, Fitwithjan. Because your draft contained copyrighted material, it had to be deleted. You will need to rewrite your draft, being extremely careful to avoid copyright infringements. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 20:24, 9 September 2019 (UTC)

Hi Jim, Thank you for your reply. Is there any possible way of retrieving it since I worked so hard on it, as I was in the process of adding all the references and copyright reference. Please let me know as I had everything in place. Thank you for your help.Fitwithjan (talk) 22:38, 9 September 2019 (UTC)

I am sorry, Fitwithjan but copyright violations cannot be restored on Wikipedia due to legal reasons. I could email the text but you do not have email activated on your account. I need to know if you understand how seriously copyright violations are taken on Wikipedia. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 22:46, 9 September 2019 (UTC)

Yes, I totally understand how seriously copyrights are and regret not adding those references immediately. I would have but I thought I could do it the following day. Certainly will never do it again. Could you please email the text to: getfitwithjanice@gmail.com Immensely appreciatedFitwithjan (talk) 19:07, 10 September 2019 (UTC) Hi Jim, I appreciate everything you have added and will definitely follow your guidelines carefully. I know you're very busy - please as soon as you're able - pls be so kind to send the deleted text to the email I left. I would be great appreciative. Wishing you a great day.Fitwithjan (talk) 21:21, 12 September 2019 (UTC)

Hello, Fitwithjan. I emailed the text to you. However, your answer above indicates that you do not fully understand the copyright issue. Adding references would have taken care of the issue of plagiarism, but you cannot build a Wikipedia article by copying text that other people have previously written. A few brief cited quotes are OK, but a large majority of the text must be original work written by you, summarizing and paraphrasing the sources that you have cited. Please be very careful about this. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 00:18, 13 September 2019 (UTC)Hi Jim, I greatly appreciated everything you have added and will definitely follow your guidelines carefully. Thank you. I am NOT lYING. I HAVE evidENCE. Please investgate him, he is off-wiki colluding and pushing left leaning academics. 122.15.82.83 (talk) 07:53, 16 September 2019 (UTC)

Your policy allows someone who is dining with left leaning academic scholars to fill articles with their books and bash the right? Have some shame. Can a WP account be hacked?

Out of pure curiosity I checked Lmatt's contributions. I noticed the account became active in 2005, some periods of silence, a few edits in 2017 and 2019 and then they came on like gangbusters in 2019. Most of the edits had to do with Gun laws (i. national and nternational) causing me to muse of an association with the NRA (irrelevant), HoweverLmat became very active and disruptive over the subject of LGBTQ and Transgender which leads me to speculate that this sudden and dramatic shift in attention might indicate a hacking of an account. I am fully aware that editors can do the same to me, check my contributions and form a picture of who I am and my interests. Puzzling to say the least though,as I am very eclectic, as is my personal library.Oldperson (talk) 21:40, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

Hello, Oldperson. Thanks for your insights. I had not looked that far back in their editing history. Yes, if the password for an account is compromised, then in theory another person could take control of the account. Practically, that would seem to be a bad way to edit, unless the first person had died or was incapacitated or was complicit in handing over control of the account. It is hard to see the benefit unless the account had advanced permissions, such as being an administrator. It is so easy to set up an account and get autoconfirmed, what would be the benefit of such a scheme? By the way, several administrator accounts have been hacked, which allows much more serious disruption to take place for a few minutes as opposed to a commonplace troll account. That indicates the importance of good password security.
I took a closer look at their edit history and note that in addition to gender controversies and gun rights, they have also edited concerning Bitcoin, libertarianism and electrical standards. But you are correct that they opened the account in 2005, barely edited until 2011-2012 when their usage was very heavy for a few months, then disappeared again until late 2018. In the end, I do not know what to think. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 22:21, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for checking. Strange behavior to say the least. Like you I don't know what to think either. To me it is like someone who is a devout vegetarian, suddenly becoming addicted to Big Macs.Oldperson (talk) 22:27, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
@Cullen328: when you said what would be the benefit of such a scheme I realize that the account in question isn't just autoconfirmed. He has ECU permissions, which has made a lot of the recent disruptions more hard to prevent. Regardless, it would require a CheckUser to analyze in any capacity. ARBCOM

I don't recall you and I interacting a great deal, but I have seen some great work come out of your efforts. It was suggested to me recently that I simply 'go ask' the precious few folks I'd want, if they would consider running for Arbcom this year. So I am asking. Would you consider it? Or has that been asked and answered somewhere I haven't seen? — Ched (talk) 03:22, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

@Ched: Someone did ask him, up above. I'm hoping you get a different answer though. In all seriousness, Cullen, there's only a handful of people I would trust to do the job, and you're one of them; I'd vote for you without hesitation. Vanamonde (Talk) 04:22, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
Ched and Vanamonde93, I am honored by your words of support. Thank you. I gave Carrite my honest answer in the conversation above. Threat you made

Though it's not 100% clear to me what you wished to warn me about, this threat was not called for. Please don't threaten other users like that with unclear aspersions bordering on a personal attack. Also, as you & I so well know after all these years, article talk pages are for article content, not for attacks of any kind on other users. My question is about article content. It's perfectly normal to ask other interested users if they've seen any more reliable coverage of something that has been commented on in a major news coverage. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 14:30, 22 September 2019 (UTC)

I did not threaten you, SergeWoodzing. Instead,I gave you a warning regarding the important policy Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons, which applies everywhere on Wikipedia including talk pages. A warning is not a threat. Please re-read the policy, which says:
"Be very firm about the use of high-quality sources. All quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be supported by an inline citation to a reliable, published source. Contentious material about living persons (or, in some cases, recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced—whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable—should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion. Users who persistently or egregiously violate this policy may be blocked from editing."
You were speculating on Wikipedia, expressing concern about this person's state of mind without offering any specific sources, but rather based on something vague you think you heard on TV but can't remember where. That is simply not allowed. There was nothing at all unclear about my warning, and there were no personal attacks nor aspersions. Simply follow BLP policy scrupulously, and all will be well. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 15:42, 22 September 2019 (UTC)
Seems like a legitimate warning. Hell in a Bucket (talk) 15:47, 22 September 2019 (UTC)
I acknowledge the warning though I still find it unclear as to scope as well as intention. There has been a lot of contentious argument and even bullying on that talk page, as I see it, so perhaps I over-reacted. I also see several other posts there, not by me, which in my mind could be addressed as more serious BLP problems that a report that the girl looks frightened.
It is up to a person who receives what he/she perceives as a threat to perceive it naturally according to his/her own standards. Nobody can tell anyone else how it would be correct to feel. Before you go about passing out warnings (warned, and with what possible consequences?) to old, experienced strictly good faith users like me, you might want to keep that in mind, or at least appeal to an administrator to assist you.
Very well aware of everything regarding BLP issues, I have addressed violations many times myself. Rest assured. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 16:09, 22 September 2019 (UTC)
I am an administrator, SergeWoodzing, so I saw no need to consult another administrator. As for the consequences, BLP policy is clear on that: "Users who persistently or egregiously violate this policy may be blocked from editing." I did not read the entire talk page. I read only the fresh section that you created, and responded to that. The scope of the warning is BLP policy and my intention is to persuade you to refrain from unsourced speculation about living people. You made a mistake. Just move on and do not repeat the mistake, and as I said above, all will be well. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 16:19, 22 September 2019 (UTC)
Sorry, I looked for a box on your page and neglected to read the categories. I also thought what I wrote there would be taken as a request for help in sourcing an item that I think could be significant for the article. Having mentioned the news coverage and asked for more input, I thought that was clear enough. Thus, your warning caught me by surprise, not (as I see it) red-handed in "egregiously" violating policy. Sorry I wasn't clearer in that post. Do I need to edit it more, or are you satisfied with the way it looks now? --SergeWoodzing (talk) 16:30, 22 September 2019 (UTC)
I think we are through here, SergeWoodzing. Let's move on. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:12, 22 September 2019 (UTC)

Socking accusations

In the last 24 hours Cassianto’s repeatedly accused me of sockpuppetry [1][2][3] and unfortunately (for you who have better things to do) you’re probably the best person to see that it doesn’t happen again. And in case you notice the other random accusation, no I did not make fun of anyone’s dyslexia [4]. EEng 16:43, 22 September 2019 (UTC)

EEng, because there is clearly bad blood between the two of you, I recommend that you make a determined effort to stay away from Cassianto. It would also be a very good thing if you refrained from discussing EC, and I don't mean extended confirmed.
I will also ask Cassianto to stay away from you as well, and to limit sock accusations to SPI.
Both of you are productive editors with idiosyncracies. The encyclopedia does not need a lengthy feud. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:10, 22 September 2019 (UTC)
Thank you. I can’t speak for him but there’s no bad blood as far as I’m concerned, and I have never engaged this person except through inadvertence or his own initiative. As you know I can take care of myself, and fear no challenge or scrutiny, but sockpuppetry accusations are special. EEng 19:07, 22 September 2019 (UTC)

Little Notice

Hey, you were the blocking admin on Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/IncidentArchive1018#User:Lmatt_and_Disruptive_Editing. I just wanted to ask you if you'd watch his interaction now that he's auto-unbanned. He seems to be getting back to old habits. (I would've posted this on ANI but it has already been closed and moved to archive.) Gwen Hope (talk) (contrib) 22:17, 19 September 2019 (UTC)

I have blocked the editor for one week. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 00:00, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
As is your purview. Honestly I'm surprised. I just asked you to watch him, but it seems you feel it was important to nip it in the bud. Gwen Hope (talk) (contrib) 00:39, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
Your assessment is correct. When someone returns from a block and immediately resumes the pattern of behavior that led to the block, I believe that a longer block is the only way effective way to convince that editor to shift their behavior in a more positive direction. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 00:44, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
Anyway, Thank you for your expedient action. Gwen Hope (talk) (contrib) 00:48, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

My apologies to have to bring this to your attention again, Mr. Cullen. Another editor brought it to my attention that it seems like the pattern has re-emerged. Please continue to monitor. Gwen Hope (talk) (contrib) 13:51, 28 September 2019 (UTC)

Voluntary interaction ban

Hi Cullen. You recently requested Eeng stayed away from Cassianto (and vice versa). Could you request, in the same uncertain terms, the same between Eeng and I? A week or so ago he decided to mock a misspelling I made on NewYorkBrad's talk page. I told him I have mild dyslexia, and not to be puerile. Today he's been a pain in the arse about trying to mock another misspelling (see Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#User: SchroCat), and edit warred to re-add it when several people have removed it and asked him not to add it. There's no good reason for him to be so obnoxious, and a ban on any interaction would be most welcome (two-way, obviously). Cheers – SchroCat (talk) 18:44, 29 September 2019 (UTC)

Hello, SchroCat. I see that EEng has been blocked. In the hope of not inflaming things, I will wait until the block has expired before discussing this matter with that editor. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 23:31, 29 September 2019 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – October 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2019).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion, a new criterion for speedy category renaming was added: C2F: One eponymous article, which applies if the category contains only an eponymous article or media file, provided that the category has not otherwise been emptied shortly before the nomination. The default outcome is an upmerge to the parent categories.

Technical news

  • As previously noted, tighter password requirements for Administrators were put in place last year. Wikipedia should now alert you if your password is less than 10 characters long and thus too short.

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • The Community Tech team has been working on a system for temporarily watching pages, and welcomes feedback.

May I post here material to get your judgment as regards my schools ban?

You warned me here to be cautious about editing the article on seminary training, and invited me to discuss the matter here. Could posting on this talk page what would be my addition to Optatam Totius to get your opinion on it, in itself be a violation of my ban? Jzsj (talk) 13:29, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

In my opinion, any edits to that article would be a violation of your topic ban. You can ask for clarification of the ban, but posting new content would be a violation. The key phrase is "broadly construed" and that definitely includes seminary education, Jzsj. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 15:26, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for your quick reply. One more question, would translating [Guiseppe Alberigo] be a violation of my ban? Jzsj (talk) 15:30, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

Jzsj, in my opinion, translating that biography would be fine. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 15:46, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

How to name this article

Sorry for bothering you. I want to start an article about a murder (please see Wikipedia:Requested articles/Other#21 May 2006 A murder in Beijing). But I don't know how to name it. Do you have any idea? -- Thedarkknightli (talk) 09:50, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

Hello, Thedarkknightli. The article should be named according to how English language sources describe the crime. I have my doubts that there should be an article unless this crime has received ongoing coverage over the years. While tragic, murders are relatively commonplace. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:11, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
@Cullen328: Thanks. Well, I can't find any article about it in English on the Internet although many people have talked about it in China. There are many websites which have articles about it. But if the article shouldn't be created on Wikipedia, I'll give up. -- Thedarkknightli (talk) 17:59, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

book cover

Hi Jim

Thanks for letting me know that non free use rationales for book covers can only be used for articles, rather than for biographical articles about the author.

Are there any templates which cover book covers for biographical articles I could follow?

Thanks for any advice you can give. I already had one attempt at uploading the cover deleted :(

A multi user account

I don'tknow where to go with this, but it appears that this is a multi user account. It is humanely impossible for one person to be so active on any given day, it is professional and focused on N Korea/China. It is a new account that started about12 July 2019. and they are already at an edit level of proficiency that makes anyone envious, even creating an article (stub) that passed on it's first go, then nominating an article for GA. It appears to be a mainland China operation. Care to take a look, tell me if I am seeing things?Oldperson (talk) 16:53, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

Hello, Oldperson. This editor's maximum monthly edit count is 651. I have had more edits per month than that many times over the years, sometimes over 1000 per month. I wrote my first new article within my first month of editing, and several more new articles in the weeks that followed. The account is quiet during normal sleep times and is not a 24 hour a day operation. This person has made a number of errors of the sort that might be expected of a new editor. They have been editing a very high profile article Xi Jinping without any major problems that I know of. The GA nomination failed. There is no prohibition on people from the People's Republic of China editing, and I notice that this editor also works on Japanese topics as well as Korean topics. Can you identify anything specifically problematic with the editor's work? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 19:18, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, I have no problems. You have addressed my concerns. What grabbed my attention was the number of edits in a day, and over varied subjects. Apparently this is my problem. I am just not that swift, smart, educated, informed, maybe some jealousy. I knew that I could depend on your expertise, that's why I asked you. Thanks.Oldperson (talk) 19:23, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

2019 US Banknote Contest

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

I agree with your comment that wikinews may be a failed project

I agree with your comment, at Wikipedia_talk:What_Wikipedia_is_not/Archive_56#The_acronym_WP:NOTNEWS_should_be_retired_for_"WP:NOTTRIVIALNEWS" that wikinews may be a failed project.

I didn't know its alexa score, so thanks for that.

I made a dozen or so good faith attempts to get articles published there. Some made it, but the process was extremely painful. Many didn't get published, and the drafts deleted. Generally, it seemed to me that an existing clique weren't making the effort to explain their rules; or, worse, were cryptically invoking wikinews-only rules that were not actually applicable. By the time one could get one of the members of the existing clique to explain themselves, or acknowledge that a tag was inappropriate, the article would be ruled stale.

One guy, a wikinews bureaucrat, threatened to block me, not for incivility, or a violation of their rules, but for asking too many questions.

I thought, back when I got the outrageous block threat, that the clique who didn't want newcomers to use wikinews resources, were risking the WMF deciding the project no longer measured up to the criteria for using WMF resources.

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 22:06, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback, Geo Swan. The state of that project is very sad. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 00:00, 26 October 2019 (UTC)

Are you an Admin, of what have you warned me ?

I have not even changed an article, just made suggestions. Please tell me what on earth I have done wrong. Please. Boeing720 (talk) 17:13, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

(watching) WP:BLP is one of the most important policies we have, as you must know. So at a guess, I'd say the DS alert (which is not a warning, as it states quite baldly) was probably not unrelated to the portion of your remark which was subsequently redacted. Anyway: see wot C238 has to say. ——SN54129 17:21, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
Yes, I am an administrator, Boeing720. What you did wrong was make the comments that has to be redacted at Talk: Greta Thunberg. Please be aware that WP:BLP applies to every page everywhere on Wikipedia, not just to articles. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:58, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
I still don't get it. I get our rules, it's not that. But I counted seven sentences - which one(s) do you think is WP:BLW ? It has to be crystal clear, so it won't happen again. If you could be so kind ? Boeing720 (talk) 19:11, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
Is it related to this well known issue ? [6] ? Boeing720 (talk) 19:16, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
Your derogatory speculations about Greta Thunberg's mental health and her father's political affiliations are the problem here, Boeing720. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 19:19, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
But about her mental health - this is just what she has stated herself in Skavlan (Norwegian-Swedish TV), it's also mentioned by an other contributor above. I don't think I used "affiliation", but "run by Svante Thunberg". There's plenty of stuff on this issue in Sweden, this from Svenska Dagbladet is recommended for translation [7] (Why isn't Svante Thunberg honnest ?). I was not aware sources are required for talk-pages.

What will become of us (Wikipedians and others) if we no longer are allowed to speak the truth ? Boeing720 (talk) 19:53, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

Boeing720, if you have reliable sources that call her father a "Communist", then bring them forward. It is a BLP violation to speculate about his political motivations without evidence. Using Google Translate, I find no evidence that he is a Communist in the article you linked to, and was unable to find evidence that he is a Communist through a Google search. Your description of her mental state was derogatory. Your personal speculations about these matters are not "the truth". You are not allowed to attack living people that way on Wikipedia. Your remarks were policy violations. End of story. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 20:07, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
OK it all comes down to the word "Communist" ? I haven't any source supporting that. That part was too hasty. Sorry. But simultaneously, why do I get the feeling that it's about something else ? Everything and everybody else might be discussed and criticized but not this issue. And by that I mean what I wrote about Svante running Greta. I think the dad is a very dangerous man, not at least to the poor and the less developed countries. All other environment issues are over-shadowed, and in the light of the Ozon-hole issue 15-25 years ago (which never is spoken of today), poor data to compare temperatures in the past with, we tend to forget all horrible local environment disasters around the world. I strongly feel the experts has to prove it isn't all bollocks again. At the same time as local pollution of both the atmosphere and the sea increases. For instance a British documentary on around 500 of the world's largest container ships are run on the extremely sulphurous fuel called bunker oil. One such ship pollutes more than 50 million cars (a 2017 documentary watched on Danish DR2 1,5 years ago). And all the western world "export" of mixed garbage - not to speak of how much unnecessary energy that's required for running Facebook and various streaming servers. Film and pictures take an enormous amount of space, which better had been stored on DVDs. But we must not fly ! All constructive environment debate appear to have vanished, very much thanks to Mr Thunberg, I can't help feeling.

Why do you have to speak every truth you happen to know, or believe, specifically on Wikipedia, Boeing720? Wikipedia is not an outlet for your or anybody else's stream-of-consciousness. The link you give Cullen above goes to the blog of a right-wing activist, which is in no way a reliable source. I've no idea why you say it's from Svenska Dagbladet, which is by contrast a respectable newspaper — how did you get those two mixed up? If you publish the kinds of hints about Greta Thunberg and her father that are made in that blog, Wikipedia can be sued. Don't quote stuff like that here. Nothing in particular will "become of" you if you restrain yourself from furthering conspiracy theories on Wikipedia. There are plenty of sites on the internet that will welcome that type of material — I suggest you use them instead. Bishonen | talk 20:46, 30 October 2019 (UTC).
I don't have to speak each and every truth. From where on earth did that come from ? The source you refer to quotes indeed Svenska Dagbladet. And as I was warned for using "Communist" then you could well be warned yourself by labeling this source "far right" without any supporting source at all - apparently not allowed even at talk-pages. The key, as I see it, is about how a young girl with a psychiatric diagnose known as Aspberger's Syndrome is abused by the father. And the horrific results this campaign very well might cause the poorest countries of the world. And we don't even have a clue of for instance the Pacific Ocean surface temperatures 30 or 60 years ago. The lack of comparing data is disturbingly huge. Whilst we for certain know how dirty the sea around Rio de Janeiro was during the Olympics. And there are probably millions of polluted areas around the world. And by focus everything on the dizzy climate questions, like the growing Ozon hole before that, all the local pollution disasters increase in numbers and gets worse. This even reaches relatively poor areas of otherwise rich countries, like the Legionnaires in Fleet, Michigan - presumably caused by the tap water. (Flint was once a great Motor City, but just as US Boomtowns can grow very fast, when US cities decline, everything goes faster too, when compared to European counterparts.) Recent IP report at ANI

Hi. You may want to take a closer look at the IP user that originated the report at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#37.236.117.11, 180.183.22.224. A few minutes after that report, they created Draft:A place of polygon has 5978° with the same content about which they were complaining (I've tagged it CSD-G1). Seeing that, I looked at their history and I'm not sure what's going on, but it's not good. this edit and the edit-war going on on that userspace page is apparently related. Sorry to bother if you or someone else is already on top of it. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 08:52, 1 November 2019 (UTC)

Thanks, AlanM1. Other administrators took care of it. That draft has been deleted and the IP blocked. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 15:31, 1 November 2019 (UTC)

The Jesus article and Hello

Hi Jim

I'm new to wiki editing and I have to confess I'm a little confused. I saw the article about historical Jesus and found that the first 4 citations in it were incorrect. I've actually bought the sources and found that they do not say what the authors of the article attempt to attribute to them.

I tried to correct this. Only to see that you have reverted it back to the original and said that I should reach "consensus" in "talk". That makes no sense to me because whoever has put these incorrect quotes in did so without reaching any consensus.

So a person can make up a claim, write it in an article, use any random citation (which doesn't support the claim) and the article will stand until somebody reaches consensus to change it?

I am a long time wiki user and a financial contributor. What I see at this point is disappointing as it undermines the encyclopaedia's credibility.

Would you please let me know what I can do to fix that article? Allocutus (talk) 05:54, 3 November 2019 (UTC)

Hello Allocutus. The proper place to discuss the content changes that you want to make is at the article's talk page, where discussion is now taking place. You are new so you need to learn how decisions are made on Wikipedia. The standard method is discussion leading to consensus on the article talk page. If things are as obvious as you say they are, then it should be easy to convince other editors. Yes, consensus is required when changes are disputed. But this article is highly controversial and the content has been hammered out over the years. Read the talk page archives and the FAQs. This article has been debated very extensively. Friendly suggestion: do not mention your financial contributions to the Wikimedia Foundation. They run the servers and and PR operations but do not have control over the content of articles, except in the most extreme of cases. Nobody cares whether or not you have donated, nor should they. As for credibility, this encyclopedia is the #5 website in the world. Many articles are excellent, many are good, many are mediocre and some are terrible. Smart people know that but despite that, billions find the encylopedia useful and volunteer editors like you and I work to improve it every day. Through consensus. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:41, 3 November 2019 (UTC)
Allocutus, start by reading Talk:Historicity of Jesus/FAQ which addresses some of your concerns, and please be aware the the talk page archives have 40 sections. The debate has been very thorough. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:58, 3 November 2019 (UTC)

Trying to reply

Hi again Jim

I tried to reply to your response to me here but there was no button for that! How do I reply???

I've read the FAQ you've linked me to. I saw someone say that in order to claim consensus, one must link to a source that states that there is consensus.

Again, the sources linked in the article DO NOT say that there is a consensus.

You also make a reference to an archive discussion. Where can I find that???

Thanks Martin (Allocutus) PS I wasn't suggesting that as a contributor I get some sort of privilege. If that's how you took it, you misunderstood :) Allocutus (talk) 07:27, 3 November 2019 (UTC) my

Hello again, Allocutus. Read the entire talk page starting with all the content in the yellow box at the top, and you will see that there are links to the 40 pages of archives. The issue of consensus in the academic community is discussed at length in those archives. As for replying, you should be able to see an "edit" button for each thread. That should be used for replies, instead of starting a new thread. As for your financial donations, what was the purpose of mentioning them? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 08:05, 3 November 2019 (UTC)

Review

Hi Cullen. When you get a few minutes could you have a look at the recent edits by user:Volunteer Marek on Jack Posobiec and Talk:Jack Posobiec, both of which I believe are disruptive on multiple levels. This editor has a long history of problematic editing and a block log longer than my arm. Political topics appear to be a persistent area of trouble. In the meanwhile I am going to request an CU for user:Ihuntrocks. Thanks... -Ad Orientem (talk) 00:06, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

P.S. My own editing on this page should also be looked at. I have also had a long discussion with Ihuntrocks on their talk page. -Ad Orientem (talk) 00:16, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
Hello, Ad Orientem. I've responded in detail by email. I will sit on the sidelines and observed the situation for the time being. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:37, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
