Hello Jim you can call me Ben I am a new user, and I heard that you like helping new users. If you can help me that would be great.--NonnySmith (talk) 14:52, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

Hello, NonnySmith. I suggest that you read Wikipedia:Guidance for younger editors, and then try Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Adventure. If you have more specific questions, feel free to ask. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:17, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
Thx Jim I will make shore to ask you for help on anything specific.--NonnySmith (talk) 13:50, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

LowTierGod Wikipedia page

Hey. I noticed a lot of stuff has been removed due to there being no official source for it. If that’s the case why is his name on there Dalauan Sparrow? There is no official source saying that’s his name. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Unknown Three (talkcontribs) 18:26, 10 April 2021 (UTC)

A Google search shows that the subject self-identifies as Dalauan Sparrow on several social media platforms. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 18:39, 10 April 2021 (UTC)

Just to follow up on this article. The semi-protection for it ended, and as feared, there have been further attempts to make bad faith edits (adding pejoratives, "real name" assertions, BLP violations, etc.) Thankfully, these edits have already been reverted by good faith editors. Based on the level of such activity so far, I think this article falls under consideration for some sort of further protection. Shortscircuit (talk) 23:49, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

Shortscircuit, I have semi-protected the article for three months, since intense disruption began as soon as the previous protection expired. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 00:14, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for dealing with this. Shortscircuit (talk) 01:06, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
You are welcome. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 01:14, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
At the risk of going off on a slight tangent, although still related to this article. There seems to be a small, but worrying trend of related activity on Wikipedia. I am specifically talking about BLP articles and trolling/doxxing issues. As someone mentioned before, the subject of this article is one of the targets of Kiwi Farms for harassment.
Now, the user who created this article persistently tried to add BLP violating content to the article. So I looked into their edit history, and sure enough, they had created a draft page for Draft:DarksydePhil, another known target of Kiwi Farms, at around the same time. I am not speculating anything purely based on these two articles. That is not my point here.
I did look further back at this user's past contributions, and found that the user had edited the article about Kiwi Farms too. Specifically, the edits were made to change certain parts of the narrative so that Kiwi Farms would look good, and the victim(s) of Kiwi Farms would look bad. For example, in revision 988446307 of the article, details about the suicide of a Kiwi Farms victim was changed, and this user claimed in the edit summary that the "sourced article" included such information. A quick read of the article revealed this to be false. Likewise, revision 988447276 contained a similar change, citing a source article which upon investigation, cotained no such information. Besides, one of the cited references used most likely does not meet reliability requirements.
My point in all this is there is a possibility that Wikipedia could become increasing used by attack sites such as Kiwi Farms as a tool for trolling/doxxing/harassing living persons. Who knows how many other BLP articles out there are already targets of such activity. Shortscircuit (talk) 06:56, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for the additional information. The draft will be deleted in a month if it is not edited further. The editor in question is now well aware of the strict sourcing standards for BLPs. If additional infractions of that type come to my attention, I will act promptly. As for the broader problem, none of this is anything new. Article content that overtly violates BLP policy is dealt with swiftly, especially when trolling and doxxing are involved. Edge cases can be a bit more difficult. I encourage you to let me know if you see such violations, and to report them to WP:BLPN if I am not active. Major urgent incidents can be reported to WP:ANI. Thanks again. Hello

I need to ask a question please? Chromewobbleshaft (talk) 03:58, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

No need to ask my permission, Chromewobbleshaft. What is your question? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 04:03, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

How does one insert an accurate photo for Howard Eddy Jr. in the Grand Funk Railroad Wikipedia members section. Howard Eddy Jr.’s is blank. Could you help with this? Chromewobbleshaft (talk) 04:13, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

Still there? Chromewobbleshaft (talk) 04:17, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

Chromewobbleshaft, it appears that this person was only a member of that band for about two years, and does not have a Wikipedia biography. So, I am not sure that such a photo would add much to the encyclopedia. Any such photo must either be freely licensed or comply with Wikipedia's strict policy on non free images, and there must be consensus for its inclusion. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 04:26, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
Do you have a personal relationship with this musician, Chromewobbleshaft? If so, please follow the guideline for editing with a conflict of interest. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 04:29, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

The photo next to it is of Dennis Bellenger, who was the bassist for only a couple of years. I am Howard Eddy Jr. and I find it insulting that the time and effort that I put into that band has been thrown aside. That reunion tour was the first time Grand Funk had reunited since the mid 70’s. When Dennis Bellenger was in the band there were only 2 of the 3 originals in the group. When I was with them from 96’-98’ it had the original 3 members for the first time since those mid 70’s. I think I deserve to have a photo on the page Chromewobbleshaft (talk) 04:34, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

I don’t understand what you mean about conflict of interest guidelines Chromewobbleshaft (talk) 04:36, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

Hello? Chromewobbleshaft (talk) 04:47, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

I believe I found the correct guideline and I read it. I am not trying to gain any advancement or get something from this except for the due respect. GFR would not still be together now had the 96’-98’ tour and Bosnia concerts happened. The shows were strong and the audiences loved that tour, therefore giving the band the confidence to keep it going, with or without Farner. So you say I was only in for a short period and that made it insignificant to the story? That’s not right! Chromewobbleshaft (talk) 04:54, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

Typo: “had the 96’-98’ tour and Bosnia concerts NOT happened” Chromewobbleshaft (talk) 04:56, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

Chromewobbleshaft, I am a volunteer and not obligated to answer your questions immediately. I have a life off Wikipedia. You have a glaring and obvious conflict of interest and must conduct yourself with restraint. Wikipedia is not a platform for you to get "due respect". It is a neutral encyclopedia. If reliable independent sources describe your importance in that tour, then provide links to that coverage at Talk: Grand Funk Railroad. Your personal experiences are of no interest to Wikipedia editors, except as they motivate you to identify truly reliable sources for the purpose of improving that article. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 05:56, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

Are you facing this same issue?

I edit with a Mobile device and a problem I’m facing currently is all the sections are automatically opened as opposed to me clicking on them before they open. Are you also facing this same problem? Celestina007 (talk) 14:09, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

Hello, Celestina007. I have not encountered that problem before. What type of device are you using and which site or app are you using? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 16:09, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
I edit with an iPhone and edit Wikipedia via the website and not the app. Probably I have to reboot the device, if you aren’t facing the same problem then the problem must be from my end, Apple products are always so problematic. Damn! Celestina007 (talk) 16:40, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
Celestina007, I am an Android user so I cannot offer iPhone-specific advice. I suggest that you try the desktop site if you aren't already doing so. If you scroll to the bottom of the mobile site, there is a "Desktop" link. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 16:55, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
It irks me so much when I have this kind of problems, editing via the desktop site with a mobile is something I detest, I prefer editing under “mobile view” and like I stated, every topic in my talk page is open(this problem started today) as opposed to it being closed and you clicking on the topic of your choice to open and read it. This irritates me to my bone marrow, it’s a Friday, i’m back from work, I’m supposed to be having a good time editing and this nonsense problem chooses to pop up now? Christ Jesus!! If there are two people who can help me here it’s yourself and PrimeHunter. It’s as if Mobile users are deliberately being frustrated. First it was deleted articles still showing in blue as opposed to showing in red, then it was the image greying out problem. I’m tired of this tbh. I’m way too old for this bullshit. Celestina007 (talk) 19:01, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
Celestina007, I am very sorry that you are having such a tough time today. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 19:35, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
@Cullen328, your concern is appreciated. I’m heading to the tea house perhaps I might get some luck there. Celestina007 (talk) 19:38, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
Celestina007, another option is WP:VPT. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 19:40, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

@Celestina007: I had to dig through the source to find the answer. Best I can tell, if your device has a width of over 720 pixels, this is considered a "tablet" and all sections are expanded. Otherwise, there should be an "Expand all sections" option in your settings (under the hipster menu hamburger menu menu with three bars). So, either you recently upgraded to a larger device, switched to reading in landscape mode, or you accidentally checked that option. Suffusion of Yellow (talk) 19:53, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

@Suffusion of Yellow, thanks for looking out for me. I have not changed my device, I still optimize my regular device. I have not for once ever checked the “expand all sections” button, you raised a valid point about me accidentally switching to landscape mode, I don’t remember doing so, but If I did accidentally switch to landscape mode, how do I undo that? where do I go to check to see if or not is enabled? This problem is killing me psychologically. Celestina007 (talk) 20:15, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
@Celestina007: By "landscape mode" I mean "you are holding your phone horizontally". Is the "expand all sections" option even there? If not, that means the site thinks you are on a tablet. Suffusion of Yellow (talk) 20:19, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
@Suffusion of Yellow, affirmative, an expand all sections is very much present but is disabled as earlier stated. Perhaps it would self repair itself as every apple product eventually does. Celestina007 (talk) 20:49, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

TRM and the PBP ANI

The reason that that ANI got out of hand is that TRM inserted himself into it, while at the same time following me to another article I'd recently edited but he'd never edited. TRM has been doing this periodically to me for years. I can provide diffs if needed. I will NEVER stop calling TRM's interactions with me hounding because it's been clear to me for awhile that's what he does to me. pbp 20:39, 17 April 2021 (UTC)

As another editor suggested, you should take a chill pill (or have a cup of tea). Your behavior there is way out of line. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 20:41, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
So TRM just gets a free pass to hound me from time to time? That's not fair. That's not on. How the hell does that guy get away with treating everybody like crap? pbp 20:48, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
The simple fact of the matter is that you look much worse in that discussion than the other editor does. Can't you see that? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 20:50, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
If looking bad in that ANI is the price I have to pay to get TRM off my back, I'd pay it. And more. I've had it up to here with TRM and just when I thought I'd rid myself of him he comes bumbling in there with clearly nothing else on his mind except turning this discussion into an excuse to demand punishment of me. Can I get a commitment from you to tell him to stop doing that? pbp 20:52, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
No. Any editor in good standing can comment at ANI. Stop behaving in ways that lead other editors to think that you need to be sanctioned. It's a really bad look. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 20:56, 17 April 2021 (UTC)

Becoming an editor for Wikipedia

Dear Jim,

I am Anaïs, working into digital and energy transition topics and would like to become editor for Wikipedia. Article update pending after full disclosure

Hi Jim, you helped me out sorting the conflict of my username and assisted in a question last year - User_talk:Cullen328/Archive_70#International_Usage_(de/en) - so I hope you can help me with a pending update a client made in February after a full disclosure of the username: Talk:Wellendorff Is there something could be done helping to get the translation and investiagation work a go for the pending article-update? Regards, --mARTin (talk) 20:53, 20 April 2021 (UTC)

Hello, MARTin.Hinterdorfer. The material on that talk page is highly promotional and completely unacceptable for this encyclopedia. It is written like an advertisement, and from the point of view of the company. Please read WP:NPOV. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 21:01, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for you quick reply. Is it o.k., when I go through the draft-text to get rid of the PR-/Ads-parts and re-issue the publication? --mARTin (talk) 05:38, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
MARTin.Hinterdorfer, yes, of course. You can edit the draft to make it neutral. It needs a lot of work, and it especially needs more references to independent reliable sources that devote significant coverage to the company. Those sources should be the backbone of the article, not the company's own website. Use of the company's website should be kept to a bare minimum, in accordance with WP:SELFPUB. Please read WP:NCORP for a deeper understanding of what is required. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:21, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
Thanx againg for your time and the links provided. I know about that and went through the references, only three of them are from the company page - legal information and two for history and product-details - I'll head to get more English sources into references 'cause for now it's a lot of German sources. One Addon question right now: should I give you an information after editing or do you have the page on your watchlist anyway? --mARTin (talk) 06:40, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
MARTin.Hinterdorfer, please let me know when you have made the changes. German language sources are OK but English language sources are preferable when available. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:08, 21 April 2021 (UTC)

Tried to post to teahouse but didn't work?

Hi Jim,

I just discovered Teahouse, which is really cool. I have been editing on Wikipedia for 14 years but only sporadically and I am not really super knowledgeable about the references.

I posted a question to Teahouse a few minutes ago, but something weird happened. I don't know what. I also saw some input from an Elmidae? I messaged her/him. I don't even know how to look for responses to these questions.

I'd really appreciate any help. My email is sfbaybreezes@yahoo.com. I also got a notification from another member but also did not know how to respond?

For example, I always check "watch this page" but not sure where I can look at the "watches"? I don't think I've ever figured that out. pretty sad.

Thanks very much for any help.

Kris Wood

Kristinamwood (talk) 13:43, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

Hello, Kristinamwood. I do not know why your attempt to ask a question at the Teahouse was not successful. My best guess is that you forgot to click the "Publish changes" button and therefore lost what you had written. Elmidae corrected an error you made in formatting a reference. They gave you a detailed and useful response at User talk: Elmidae. I do not know what kind of browser or app you are using. I usually use the fully functional desktop site on an Android smartphone. At the very top of any page in desktop mode is a "Watchlist" tab that displays recent changes to pages you watch. There is also a "Contributions" tab that lists your recent edits. The best place to respond to an editor is in the relevant conversation. You can also visit their talk page, just as you have visited mine, and start a new conversation. I hope this helps. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 15:39, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the great info, Jim! That was very useful. I know that I did Publish Changes. So not sure what went wrong. But I've gotten my questions answered. And Elmidae corrected my edit and also shared very helpful info. Thanks again.

Need help Help for a declined page

Hello Cullen328,

I have recently create a Wikipedia page. Unfortunately my submission was declined. This is the message that I’ve received.

The content of this submission includes material that does not meet Wikipedia's minimum standard for inline citations. Please cite your sources using footnotes. For instructions on how to do this, please see Referencing for beginners. Thank you.

I am very new in this field. It’ll be great if you can help me to correct the page.

Here is the page that I’ve created https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Prem_Kathir

Please help me to create a perfect page. Thank you.

Hello, Katharineprem. Based on your username and the name of the subject of your draft, it appears likely that you have a conflict of interest here. Please explain your relationship to Prem Kathir. If you are that person, then read WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY. Writing an autobiography is highly discouraged.
Your draft violates the Neutral point of view, which is a core content policy. Examples include "His passion for film making simmers" and "crystallized his vision and path for himself" and "writing stories close to his heart". That type of unreferenced language is completely unacceptable for an encyclopedia article. Every trace of promotional, non-neutral language should be removed from the draft, unless it is cited to a reliable, independent source like a professional film review.
Another problem is that the draft has two reference sections, and your independent references are in a separate section at the end. This is completely wrong. There should be inline references, which means that the code for each reference should be in the body of the article right after the claim that it supports. The wiki software will automatically assemble the reference list. Right now, your reference numbers are clumped together at the end of the draft, which is wrong. His own films appear to be presented as references, and this too is incorrect. They should just be listed. You have already been advised to study Referencing for beginners.
Please be aware that Facebook is not a reliable, independent source, and neither is a Google search. You have lots of undefined acronyms and unreferenced content in the Filmography section. You must provide a reference for every claimed film award.
I hope that this is useful feedback for you. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:17, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

Jim, Thank you for responding so kindly. The Tuam Herald article was dated 22nd July 1876 and headed - Custer's Army, a Tuam man. The Tuam Herald is a regional newspaper and is available to view on Irishnewsarchives.com. It's a paid site. I have it on pdf but can't share that here. It mentions his brother John (who was a pawnbroker in Tuam) and three of his nephews. He was only gone twenty years and he still had family in Tuam so I have no doubt but that he was born there. Whereas there are birth records for his five siblings, there is none for him. His father and brother are buried locally in Claretuam. According to the headstone, his father died in 1858. His mother was still alive in 1868. After being dismissed from the army in 1863, Myles reenlisted under the alias of Charles Thomas, he cited Amesbury as his place of birth and stuck with it and the lie apparently stuck.

Apart from the Tuam Herald report, I have found three records of his Irish birth:

Census return 1855 for West Newbury – Ireland is recorded as his place of birth. https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=4472&h=4067232&tid&pid&queryId=8043d68652f62795afd9bb2c6b7c1209&usePUB=true&_phsrc=pTu8951&_phstart=successSource&fbclid=IwAR1kiuagOKgUNg20NVNCuboE1mj6fI_WvOxYPiC2oJMMZcuUyDy_ajKaHew

Enlistment form (1857) – Galway is recorded as his place of birth. https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=1198&h=454619&tid&pid&queryId=2aa27f794ef1efc315b13c61ccb783e2&usePUB=true&_phsrc=pTu8928&_phstart=successSource&fbclid=IwAR2n4qxUMxwqgLpsxTxaZEskg3Bu8GQrVbZqBozcDMxR4xxQ5w4ZZJFjhBk

Letter of acceptance of the commission of 2nd Lieutenant in 1863 - he says he was born in Ireland https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=1198&h=454619&tid&pid&queryId=2aa27f794ef1efc315b13c61ccb783e2&usePUB=true&_phsrc=pTu8928&_phstart=successSource&fbclid=IwAR2n4qxUMxwqgLpsxTxaZEskg3Bu8GQrVbZqBozcDMxR4xxQ5w4ZZJFjhBk — Preceding unsigned comment added by BuffyO'B (talkcontribs) 07:18, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Hello, BuffyO'B. Please provide a direct and accurate quotation from the Tuam Herald about his place of birth. What evidence do you have that this newspaper is a reliable source? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 07:24, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

I have seen you answering me in Wikipedia:Teahouse

Hi, you have answered me about my question. And what if the image is from an online image source? Can I upload the image that I downloaded from the image source? From where can I upload images?. Thank you. Bhu1147 (talk) 04:54, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Hello, Bhu1147. A large majority of images that you find online are protected by copyright. There are very few circumstances where copyrighted images are acceptable. Any image that you find at Wikimedia Commons is OK to use. Those images are pre-approved, and there are millions of them. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 05:27, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Thank you so much. I can upload images from [Wikimedia Commons]] to Wikipedia right? What if even Wikimedia Commons even don't have it? How can I identify an Image as copyrighted?Bhu1147 (talk) 07:04, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Bhu1147, a file on Wikimedia Commons can be used on Wikipedia without uploading. Just call up the file name. Any image must be assumed to be restricted by copyright unless you have solid evidence to the contrary. For example, if an image was first published over 95 years ago, then copyright has expired and it is now in the public domain. Another example is that images created by the U.S. Federal government as part of their job duties are in the public domain. You must do the work to determine the copyright status of any image that you want to use. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 07:16, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Thank You Bhu1147 (talk) 09:44, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Jim, I'm not sure if I am replying to your query in the correct place - apologies if I'm not - feel as if I'm in a Franz Kafka book!

The Tuam Herald has been around for 185 years printing stories of purely local interest. You won't find world news there unless it connects back to someone who lived in the locality - as was the case here. The Moylans were well-known business people, Myles's brother John was also a Town Commissioner for some years. Myles's nephews were aged 26, 24 and 20 respectively at the time the article was published and the eldest may have remembered Myles before he left Tuam for America. Myles's older brother Thomas worked in one of the many comb factories in West Newbury, MA and I think that another of his nephews went to MA - but can't prove it. The following is the report in the Tuam Herald:-

“Custer’s Army - A Tuam Man - July 22nd, 1876 The harrowing particulars of the massacre of General Custer’s men by the Sioux Indians are so familiar to everyone as to need no recapitulation at our hands. Everyone is conversant with the facts and few do not know how three hundred United States soldiers so ably generalled were decoyed into an ambush and ere escape could be made how all were mercilessly slaughtered. It is also in the memory of our readers how another company were almost meeting with the same fate. Well in this latter detachment we have just heard there was a Tuam man who fought his way out of the scrape as gallantly as he won the Major’s epaulets through the Civil War. Major Myles Moylan, brother of the late John Moylan, and uncle of Messrs. Tom, John and Richard, had command of a company of the 12th that had to fight hard and work desperately to escape with their lives out of the ambush and not meet with the same fate so many of their brave companies experienced. Major Moylan’s conduct on the occasion was most soldierlike, distinguished by a daring determination and a spirit that cannot fail meeting with high recognition from the military authorities of the Great Republic. While we congratulate our old townsman on his providential escape, we feel naturally proud to learn he had acquitted himself so creditably and upheld the well-known military character of the Celt on a foreign battlefield.”

Have you checked the three links I sent you - they all point to an Irishman and a Galway man? When he enlisted in 1857 he cited Galway as his place of birth. When he was dismissed from the army and re-enlisted under the alias Charles Thomas he cited Amesbury as his place of birth and I think that's when the confusion began.

Hello, BuffyO'B. I do not think that the phrases "a Tuam man" or "our old townsman" amount to unambiguous evidence thst he was born in Tuam. Maybe he was or maybe not. Ancestry.com is not a reliable source for use on Wikipedia. There could have been two people named Myles Moylan, one from Galway and one from Massachusetts. Cousins perhaps. It seems he lied about things like his name, his date of birth and his place of birth. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 16:16, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi Jim,

I think that the least that needs to happen here is that it is acknowledged that Moylan’s place of birth is disputed. The purpose of Wiki is to portray an accurate story of prominent people or a version of events.

My two records are official records- one is a census return and the other is a U.S. Army record. Surely, they are legit.

1. My Myles Moylan who was a shoemaker from Ireland was living in West Newbury in 1855. Is the census record not legit?

2. According to Wiki, Myles Moylan, a shoemaker from Amesbury enlisted as a Private in the U.S. Army on June 8th, 1857. According to my Army record, a Myles Moylan, a shoemaker from GALWAY enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 8th, 1857. Have you a corresponding record for your Myles Moylan? Once again is my army record not legit? https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/1198/images/MIUSA1798_102884-00403?treeid=&personid=&hintid=&queryId=2aa27f794ef1efc315b13c61ccb783e2&usePUB=true&_phsrc=pTu8928&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&pId=454619

3. As for the letter of acceptance of the 2nd Lieutenancy in 1863, he himself claims Irish birth. I know he was not always truthful about his origins etc. The letter was written before he had a need to mis-state the truth i.e. before he was dismissed and re-enlisted as Charles Thomas in December 1863. Once he had thrown off his Irish identity, it may have been expedient for him to cast it way totally.

In reference to the Tuam Herald article, Myles’s people were prominent business people and well-known about the town of Tuam. In a small town in rural Ireland everybody knew everybody else. Myles was only gone twenty years at the time of that article and surely his nephews and friends knew who he was. His brother Thomas was in West Newbury, MA at the time and there is a record of Myles visiting him while on furlough (American newspaper). For the record, a Thomas Moylan and Margaret Reilly got married in Tuam in 1814. They had six children from 1816 to Myles’s birth. Five are recorded in church records. Is there any record for any child born to a Thomas Moylan and Margaret Reilly living in Amesbury, MA? Myles’s father Thomas is buried in Claretuam Cemetery, outside Tuam having died in 1858. Margaret was still alive in Tuam in 1868 – she was a beneficiary of the will of Anne Moylan, wife of the late John, mentioned in the Tuam Herald article. I have been researching Myles life story for some time and have not found any trace of his parents travelling to the US, living there or dying there.

BuffyO'B, I do not know why you have created three separate sections on my talk page for the same conversation. Most of what you are saying is original research which is not permitted on Wikipedia. The proper place to discuss all of this is Talk: Myles Moylan. You may very well be right about his actual place of birth, but it cannot be included in Wikipedia until it is published in a reliable source, such as a historical journal specializing in the Plains Indian wars, for example. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 19:52, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Myles Moylan

Jim,

Apologies again for posting on the wrong page - it's as clear as mud to me where I should be posting. I was under the impression that I was replying to you, apologies again.

I have been asked to research this article to be published in the Journal of the Old Tuam Society in Nov 2021. It's a highly reputable journal that publishes articles of local historical importance. http://catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000237091?ui=standard&fbclid=IwAR16AuD40I2Sh-stfIj-NajM2tngTxZA97EKG1ILV_QekDOEUAXvr4j1I1g

It is available for study at the following institutions: The British Library, The National Library of Ireland, The Bodleian Library in the University of Oxford, Cambridge University Library, The National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh, The National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth and course all the Irish universities including Trinity College, Dublin. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BuffyO'B (talkcontribs) 22:18, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

BuffyO'B, you have now created four sections on my Talk page when just one would be fine. Please add to existing sections instead of creating new ones. Once your article in the Journal of the Old Tuam Society is published, it may be appropriate to use as a reference in the article. Most of what you have said here on my talk page really belongs at Talk: Myles Moylan.Cullen328 Let's discuss it 00:08, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

Jim, at long last I have figured it out. The DISCUSS NOW prompt does not function on the laptop so I have had to go to NEW SECTION to reply to you and obviously started a new thread each time. The phone version is much simpler from that point of view. Anyway, thank you for your time and I'll leave you in peace. If primary sources like Myles's original enlistment form and an original census return does not warrant a question of doubt as to his place of birth I cannot think of any other route to take. I would have thought that they would have at least warranted a place in the references to allow people to make up their own minds.

Thanks again. BuffyO'B (talk) 07:14, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

Welcome

You blocked a user whom I just welcomed. In case of a really new user - and we should assume good faith - that person may not know what we mean by edit-war, consensus, not even block, may not know how to read edit history, has not used their own talk page yet, so how to find an article talk page. I remember that in the beginning, when something I had added disappeared, I just though I had made some mistake and added it again. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:21, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello, Gerda Arendt. Of course, I assume good faith but edit warring cannot be permitted to continue, and failure to communicate is not an exception to such an important policy. My hope is the the block gets the editor's attention, that they start communicating, and therefore begin learning the behavioral norms of a collaborative project. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 22:32, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Gerda, I truly love and admire your kindness and willingness to be open to new users. In this case however, the contribs indicate a WP:SPA focused ONLY on removing original quality photos and replacing them with lower quality colorized pics. There were MULTIPLE attempts to engage the user in discussion, both on the John Wayne talk page and on the users own talk page. If they are able to swap out pictures such as they did, then I'm pretty sure they could have responded to all the attempts to talk to him. I did ask for the block on Drmies talk, so it's not only Jim's view, but mine as well that the user needed to be blocked. I think it was the right call. — Ched (talk) 22:34, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

Post AfD comment

since it closed before I saw your comment, decided to drop a note here. It's not so much that they lose notability, but it turns into a one event situation. A one hit wonder is not necessarily going to be long term notable, but we'll see. Agree that at the moment it's a clear keep StarM 00:25, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello, Star Mississippi. I understand the point that you are making, but a band is not an event. We have plenty of articles about bands considered to be One-hit wonders, for example. If a topic is truly notable now, then it is notable forever. I would not oppose taking another look in six months or so. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 00:47, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
Yep, I think we're on the same page. Notable enough to pass AfD clearly now, but maybe not truly NOTABLE when the next tik tok trend happens. StarM 01:43, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
I am not a hard core inclusionist though perhaps mildly soft core. I not want to be forced to defend the notability of The Buggles. I do not differentiate between "notable" and "truly notable". Those are identical concepts in my mind. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:55, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for that ear worm, not. ;-) I have been guilty of over defending small museums, but I wouldn't call myself an inclusionist nor a deletionist. I think there are some things that generated buzz for a short window and were consequently in the news, but should they be recorded as a truly notable thing? Sometimes it just doesn't seem to be the case. Normally I wouldn't care about this band beyond the AfD, but I might have to follow this to see where they end up. I hope they thrive. Articles from your redlinks

Hi,@Cullen328 I've looked upon your redlinks, and created 2 articles, which are currently up for review. Here are the two drafts: Deborah Oropallo | Earl Thollander Tamingimpala (talk) 22:54, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

Well done, Tamingimpala! You have made a great start on both topics. I see that you may not be a fully conversant American English speaker but I have no problem understanding your writing. I will do some copyediting to bring your prose closer to standard American English. but I want to thank you very much for starting coverage of these California artists. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 01:44, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
@Cullen328, the draft on Earl Thollander had been reviewed and unfortunately was declined by @CommanderWaterford. The reason was lack of notability through the citations provided, to which I kind of agree. Since the subject of the article is long deceased, it's super hard to find any credible citations. Hence, I've looked upon the internet and archive websites, and dug up some more credible citations (such as from Nytimes, SF Chronicle) and added them. If you could check out what are the issues, and help by providing some fix, then it might pass the review this time. Or if you think this draft isn't yet ready to be an article, then help by contributing to it. Thanks! Tamingimpala (talk) 09:45, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
Hi @Cullen328, Update: Here's another draft I made off of your redlink: Cesar Chelor. Tame (talk) 15:31, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

Help regarding biased editing

Hi Jim! Thank you for answering my question earlier. It's true; Twitchell was not a serial killer (nor did I refer to him as such in the actual article) - but is instead a convicted murderer. Given the nature of his crimes, I think it's important to be mindful of how he is described in the article, and I think describing him as an "artist" without substantiating or citing that claim is particularly suspect, especially since one editor keeps adding it back. I'm wondering what to do next. I mentioned the Yogi Bhajan article earlier, because the disclaimer says that editors may be supporters of the subject of the article, which I suspect may be the case here.

Edit: I see you undid Verissa77's addition of "artist" in the Mark Twitchell article, but they have added it again, still uncited. Cisternet (talk) 22:38, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

Edit: I now see this has come up before already, 2 years ago, and that the person who raised it suspected that Verissa77 is Mr. Twitchell editing his own biography; I'm wondering if this warrants a sticker like the one on the Yogi Bhajan page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Editor_assistance/Requests/Archive_128#Mark_Twitchell_Article Are there other editors to contact about this? Cisternet (talk) 22:43, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello, Cisternet. I have blocked Verissa77 from editing the Mark Twitchell article. My understanding is that inmates in Canadian prisons do not have internet access but it is possible that the editor in question is an associate of Twitchell. Please let me know if any further disruptive edits to that article take place. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 23:29, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

Professional musicians and self-promotion

Thanks for your input into this matter Cullen328. I don't know what your day job is, but it obviously is not a professional musician! Professional music is all about self-promotion. It is a highly competitive business; with only a very lucky few making a good living out of it. Self-promotion is an accepted and indeed expected part of the music business, so as a professional musician, I am not going to apologise or make excuses for being seen as using a Wikipedia article as a means of self-promotion. Your belief that "using" Wikipedia as a means to self-promote is a big no no if you are a professional musician seems very misguided! I hope this small insight into the world of a professional musician and self-promotion will help you with your future editing with Wikipedia. Anton Cleary. I describe my occupation on my user page, but I am speaking as a Wikipedia administrator here. Self-promotion is forbidden on Wikipedia. Period. End of story. If you continue down that path, you will be blocked. I have blocked 4031 Wikpedia accounts, mostly for various types of self-promotion.
Feel free to promote yourself on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or a plethora of other websites that allow or even encourage self-promotion. Wikipedia doesn't. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 21:55, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

re-review

Hello; I edited a draft and tried to choose reliable resources. I want to ask you to re-review it and accept if possible because it is needed for me. Thanks. Atena ak2 (talk) 17:27, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello, Atena ak2. I am not an AFC reviewer and am not knowledgeable enough about reliable sources in Farsi. I do notice, though, that much of your draft is unreferenced. Either provide references or remove that content. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 20:21, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
you mean that I should add references for all the series and movies? I’ve seen pages with just 5 references! Atena ak2 (talk) 20:46, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
Atena ak2, I am saying that Wikipedia's core content policy Verifiability requires that content be verified with references to reliable sources. English Wikipedia currently has 6,293,769 articles and probably a million have problems like inadequate referencing. The solution is to either improve or to delete those articles. Adding more poor quality articles is not the solution. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 23:50, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

Following Up From Teahouse - Is making a wikipedia page for a friend a COI?

Cullen, thank you so much for the super-fast response to my question about the new page for my friend! I took a look at the article for creation process, and it seems like the first step would be to make a mock-up in my sandbox. Is that right? Also, it would be great if you could let me know if you think that my friend is notable enough. His bio is available here, and both he and the organization he founded are frequently featured in national/international media. That said, i worry about drafting the page only to be told he's not notable enough.

Best, Jack NerdOfAllTrades42 (talk) 16:18, 8 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello, NerdOfAllTrades42. I did a quick Google search and found plenty of passing mentions of Albert Fox Cahn but no significant coverage of him as a person in independent, reliable sources. Admittedly, my search was not in depth. Wikipedia:Notability (people) is the relevant guideline. If you are aware of more in-depth coverage than I was able to find, then give me links to two or three of the best of them. Please be aware that most experienced Wikipedia editors do not consider a mention followed by a quote to be the type of coverage that confers notability. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 16:46, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
Thank you so much for the quick response, that distinction makes a lot of sense. I was able to find a few examples of profiles quickly, but I can ask him for more examples if it'd help. Also, I know he's published a ton of op-eds in major newspapers, but I'm unsure if that's a factor as well.
NerdOfAllTrades42, please read Wikipedia:Interviews which is an essay that explains the thinking of many (perhaps most) experienced editors that interviews alone do not establish notability, because they are not fully independent sources. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:05, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for that resource. I guess I'm a bit confused after reading that piece what would constitute evidence that someone is notable. Maybe I'm missing something, since my own work doesn't generally involve media, but it seems like most publicity for people would take the form of (1) quotes in the press or (2) Profiles of their work, which involve interviews and thus raise the issues flagged above. I'll reach out to Albert for more cites I can use if necessary, but it would be helpful to understand what is a good type of evidence to ask for. I feel like I don't really understand what I should be looking for. Thanks again for taking the time to help me to understand this; I'm not sure why I'm finding this process so confusing NerdOfAllTrades42 (talk) 17:18, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
NerdOfAllTrades42, the best type of coverage of a living person is an in-depth article about that person in a reliable, independent source. Such coverage should be the product of independent journalism and not the product of press releases or any promotional activity on the part of the subject or organizations that they are affiliated with. Your use of the word "publicity" is key here. Experienced Wikipedia editors tend to be actively hostile to publicity efforts because we strive to be a neutral encyclopedia instead of a platform for self-promotion. There are countless websites where promotional activity is allowed and even encouraged. Wikipedia is not one of them. As an administrator, a large part of the work I do here is batting down promotionalism. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:28, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
Thank you so much, that's very helpful! I'll check with him to see if he has those sorts of articles. I really appreciate it. NerdOfAllTrades42 (talk) 17:39, 8 May 2021 (UTC)

I block far more often than I unblock, 78.26. It looks OK except that I do not know why that verbiage about future unblocks is at the end, since the editor is now unblocked. Probably not worth worrying about. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 23:39, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
Huh. Obviously I used the template incorrectly, I hadn't noticed that verbiage which is obviously from a declined request. I'll fix it. Thanks! 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 23:51, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
Actually, that's part of the unblock template. I'm seeing if I can get that changed, it's a bit weird-looking. All the best, 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 00:00, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

Francis Schonken

I don't know why some editors get so hostile about classical music, but it is a great art that they are passionate about. I don't know the details of why you blocked FS when you did, but I found him to be very disruptive a few months ago with regard to the sexuality of Frederic Chopin, and I believe that you did what you had to do. Yuck. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:15, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback, Robert McClenon. It is always tough to block a long time editor who has contributed good content, but sadly, some people are unwilling or incapable of following our behavioral norms. I heard mentions of the Chopin stuff but didn't look into that particular controversy. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 15:49, 11 May 2021 (UTC)
There was a controversy about the sexuality of Chopin, and the editors remained far apart, and DRN did not get them closer together, and then I had to put together an RFC. While the RFC was running, FS created a sub-article, Sexuality of Chopin, and said that the sexuality of Chopin was a matter of considerable discussion and controversy. Well, that was also one of the options in the RFC, and some of the other options in the RFC were similar. The point is that he was trying to bypass the RFC, and then he had the gall to claim that I was interfering, when I was just trying to allow the community to decide the issue. It was really just a case of being stubborn. Unfortunately, I don't know of a good way to deal with stubborn editors. If he requests unblock, I would support an unblock, but with a very short string. Robert McClenon (talk) 17:29, 11 May 2021 (UTC)
My experiences with Francis are legion, but I'd not vote to ban him. Staying with Chopin: Brianboulton made an edit there, following consensus on the talk. Francis reverted, just counting votes, and not even counting correctly. It has remained like that. I feel I have to take care of articles of people who just died, Christa Ludwig and many more. I have no time for such nonsense, but it has disturbed me. - For more recent, see the peer review for BWV 227. For general, Robert, see User talk:Hammersoft. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:50, 11 May 2021 (UTC)
He is indefinitely blocked not banned, by my decision as an administrator, not by a community process. Of course, I was guided by previous discussions, especially what Hammersoft said in recent months. I see no value in discussing a possible unblock unless he requests one. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 18:17, 11 May 2021 (UTC)
