RFPP bot

Hi cyberpower, hope you're well. I've noticed that your bot seems to be doing an "edit conflict" type of thing on WP:RFPP from time to time. When it makes an edit close in time to someone else's edit, it removes the previous person's edit. For example: [1]. That's the second time that's happened to me in a day or two. It can be jarring because I'm sure I made the edit but I later find it missing.

My assumption is that the bot fetches the content of the page, then it churns on it for a while and does all of its checks, and then writes its updated content to the page. If someone makes an edit while it's churning, then that edit isn't included in the text that the bot writes to the page. I'm not sure if there is a practical way to prevent this, apart from optimizing the code to minimize the time that it churns between reading the page and then writing the updated page.

If it's not possible to reduce the processing time to a sufficiently small amount of time, another possibility would be to detect an edit conflict by doing something like this:

  1. Read the content of the page
  2. Process the content and prepare your updated content for the page
  3. Read the page again and compare it to the first read. If it's different, then an edit has occurred and the bot should abort and try again later.
  4. Otherwise, if the first and second reads are the same, then write the updated content to the page.

Just some ideas. Feel free to ping me with any questions. Cheers. —ScottyWong— 05:49, 18 February 2022 (UTC)

@Scottywong: The bot should already be using the API's included method of handling edit conflicts. It's submitting a base timestamp and rev timestamp to the action=edit call. I'm not sure why the API isn't stopping the edit from going through as it should detect that timestamp it gives it is older than the latest revision. I've got very limited time on my hands, but I will take a closer look at this when I can.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 16:27, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

Language parameter

Hey, Cyber! I was wondering... Would it be possible somehow for IABot to understand and tell the language of the sources it's dealing with? In my homewiki (SqWiki) we require all sources to have the language parameter added to them. We have 12k articles needing the language parameter currently. Most of them are in English but we have no way to tell which. I thought maybe you could have such a way, maybe from some metadata aquired from the archives and make IABot add that parameter with the correct value when it's missing. Or maybe only do that for English sources. I'm sure that would drop that aforementioned number tremendously and we'd be able to fix the rest manually. - Klein Muçi (talk) 11:18, 18 February 2022 (UTC)

@Klein Muçi: Unfortunately, no, there is no way for the bot to know this. That would require some kind of sophisticated language engine, like Google Translate.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 16:28, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

Question

I try to use the archiving bot while editing via a Iphone, but for a few weeks I see an orange screen that states:

”Language unavailable: Sorry, but the language you have picked is not available yet. Please be patient. It will be made available. Feel free to help with translations by going to TranslateWiki. In the meantime this page will be using the English language.”

And I can not archive dead links.BabbaQ (talk) 18:58, 18 February 2022 (UTC)

@BabbaQ: The message you are getting has no bearing on the pages functionality. I wouldn't know why you can't archive any links. You should check to make sure that you are accessing the correct wiki. Open the menu with the Hamburger icon, and check that you have the right wiki, and language picked out.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 16:30, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

Cyberbot I deprecated API calls

Hi, Cyberbot I is making 5M deprecated API calls every day and it's the biggest offender causing a fire-hose of deprecation logs. The top deprecated features are "action=query&prop=info&inprop=readable" and "action=query&prop=revisions&!rvslots". Cyberbot II also makes deprecated calls but in a smaller scale (same API calls, but only 1M per day). Please fix those. Thanks. Ladsgroupoverleg 09:11, 28 February 2022 (UTC)

@Ladsgroup: Sorry for the delayed response, can you tell me what the correct queries are to replace these?—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 16:32, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

The first one is using inprop=readable in https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=help&modules=query%2Binfo, the correct way to do it is intestactions=read. The second one is missing rvslots option (you can either add rvslots=* or rvslots=main). Ladsgroupoverleg 19:02, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

Bot stuck.

Since 01:27, 12 April 2022 your bot has been repeatedly hitting a disallow filter while performing the action "edit" on Wikipedia:Requests for page protection/Archive/2022/04. Actions taken: Disallow, Tag; Filter description: LTA 1165.

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

CHUS clerking

Cyberbot clerked a request as no problem. The wiki software no longer (did it ever?) allows all numeric usernames. It gives the error message

The chosen username is too similar to existing usernames or it used to be username of someone else that got renamed: - ), !, ! !, ! ! ! and ! ! ! !.

Could you alter its clerking to reflect that, please? Cabayi (talk) 11:56, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

Admin stats

Hi, Cyberpower. It seems like Cyberbot I's admin stats task (from BRFA II) is malfunctioning, while Cyberbot I's other tasks seem to be okay. Would you be able to look at this when you have the time? Sdrqaz (talk) 01:16, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

I just came here to ask about Template:Adminstats, too. It's a few days (a week?) out of date. User:JamesR/AdminStats is accurate but the template isn't updating numbers. I assume they both draw from the same database. It looks like you haven't been around for a while but when you return, if you could check on this, it would be great. Many thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 02:30, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

Bot

Hello Cyberpower! I notice that on WP:RFPP, if an admin protects a page and then a minute later adds the message to the request saying that they protected the page, the bot will still leave a message saying that the page appears to have already been protected. Maybe the bot should wait about 10 minutes or so before leaving the message, and not leave the message if the admin adds the response within that 10 minute timeframe? I understand that it also does this if a page a user is requesting was protected at the requested level of protection before the request is made, so maybe if that happens it should add the message sooner? Let me know what you think of these ideas. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 18:48, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

Hi there

I’m sorry to bother you if this is a bad time, there’s no response urgency for this, but I wanted to let you know that Cyberbot 1 had this weird incident of leaving its automated message about a user’s targeted block about 6-8 times on a single case. Cyberbot I going AWOL from RfPP

Hi CP, For some weeks, I have noticed that Cyberbot I takes long coffee breaks from its chores at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. An example is the pause following this archival. It ended when I manually archived an item from the "Decrease" section, which was followed directly by a massive bot run. You can find plenty of such examples by scanning through the histories of the archive files for entries with my name on them. I have not been able to find any "aberrations" in the requests that could be the cause of the "clogged drain". Though I don't mind performing this part of my janitorial duties, it was brought home to me that I should notify you in your capacity of bot operator. Best regards, Favonian (talk) 20:22, 14 June 2022 (UTC)

global twinke

I just saw your request for rollback. I think twinkle would be useful as well. It will give you an option "restore this version". I use global twinkle, its very handy. —usernamekiran (talk) 20:58, 25 June 2022 (UTC)

I gave it a try, but it’s not good mass reverting bot edits. Twinkle forces me to provide a reason for every revert which makes it just as tedious as manually undoing the edits. Mass rollback scripts require the actual rollback permission to actually work. But Global Twinkle will still be useful for me for other issues. Just not what I’m requesting GR for. :-)—CYBERPOWER (Around) 21:31, 25 June 2022 (UTC)

Happy First Edit Day!

Bot edits pl wiki

Hi. I've seen your bot's test edits on pl wiki [3], [4] - if we have archive.is (.ph etc.) or archive.org in "url=" it seems ok - there is no need to keep dead links in cite-web (and others) templates and no need to change them like in those edits. They don't seem to be useful on pl wiki. It would be great to see InternetArchiveBot's edits on pl wiki like before april (when it has not been changing templates with archive.is/archive.org links) :) Regards, Elfhelm (talk) 20:55, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

@Elfhelm: actually the Citation style does mandate that the archive URL be placed in the archive URL parameter and that the URL parameter needs the equivalent original URL. This has always been enforced by the bot, and your bug report actually brought to light that this function was broken and not functioning correctly. Most wikis require it, so disabling it as an option hasn't really been codified. However, there exists the parameter on new Citation modules to set the url-status, which hides the original from being rendered. Coding in a switch to enable/disable this on a per wiki basis will take more work and time. :-(—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 21:26, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

Is this a typo?

Hi Cyberpower678. On User:Cyberbot I, it says Enable or disable the task here and within 60 seconds, the bot will shutdown or startup the task at it's respective wiki. Thank you. I think it's should be "its". If I'm wrong, please ignore this. Thanks! weeklyd3 (message me | my contributions) 21:28, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

InternetArchiveBot on pl wiki

Hi. Firstly - sorry for my English. The InternetArchiveBot on pl.wikipedia.org doesn't correct dead links - since early April 2022 it's been only replacing links with "archive.org" or "archive.is" (and others) from "url=" to "archiwum=" (like: [5]). In pl.wikipedia.org links with "archive.org" or "archive.is" in "url=" have been accepted for years. Those edits of the bot don't make it easier to verify the links in the project and seem to be pointless (They also allow to "click" in old dead link and some of the old domains have been taken over by, for example, spammer websites, websites with questionable content.).

I want also to add, that you and your bot are doing the really great job - when the bot makes edits that really correct the inactive links (like: [6], [7] or [8]). It would be great if the bot's edits included just such activities. Regards. Elfhelm (talk) 17:31, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

@Elfhelm: Unfortunately, the bot is coded to enforce the intended design of the cite templates. This is a global implementation and is enforced on all wikis the bot runs on. The bot's code is shared on different wikis. I'm not sure if it's possible to disable the enforcer on just one wiki. May I ask why you wish to have archive URLs in the "URL" field and not in the "archive URL" field? Maybe there is a different solution that can be implemented much more easily right now.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 13:06, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
Cyberpower678, thanks for your answer. I understand the issue of unifying the bot's activities in all projects. However, I have some seriously doubts about the necessity and usefulness of leaving "clickable" dead links in "url=" parameter.
1) First, allowing to direct "click" to dead link (blue link in "z adresu" od pl.wikipedia.org) sometimes leads to certain risks - it allows you to click the dead link and to be redirected to an "old www site" which can now contain completely different content (even illegal software, 18+ materials, intrusive advertisements, computer viruses etc.). We have had various cases where internet names have been taken by such content (this concerned, for example, the pages of inactive political parties, a cultural magazine, a think tank and former politicians).
2) Second, such a situation significantly makes it harder to mass correction of dead links (e.g. for local bots). It makes practically useless using the special page "searching external links" ([9]). Many times (also thanks to your bot which corrected some dead links) - we used this special page to search more dead links (from the same domain) for mass change. I do not insist on my arguments, but it seems to me that the bot's current activities (restoring access to dead links) do not make it any easier. And correcting sources to be available (in archived versions) is one of the key issues for the principle of verifiability.
I consider these two doubts to be the quite important. I see some suggestions. 1) "Unclickable" links in parameter "z adresu" (maybe sth like the template [10] - I have no idea if it is possible). 2) Using only "archiwum=" parameter with empty "url=" parameter - in pl.wikipedia.org we have this option in "szablon:cytuj" [11] It looks like [12] (ref. no 3 or 4). It doesn't actually work in "old and classic" citation templates cite book, cite journal ang cite web (I don't think they will be improved).
I hope you find some of my comments useful. Regards, Elfhelm (talk) 18:43, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
@Elfhelm: Then there is a solution that can be implemented much more quickly to take advantage of a function IABot already supports. On enwiki, we use the CS1 module. In it, we use the parameter url-status to set the condition of the url. "dead" will push the archive forward and the dead link at the end of the citation. "live" flips it around and puts the live URL first. "unfit" or "bot: unknown" (which is what IABot uses) hides to the original URL from rendering. It wouldn't be too difficult to port the latest CS1 module to plwiki, since it's very i18n friendly meaning it can be localized fairly quickly and, in addition, will upgrade the capability of the citation templates since the module is centralized to all templates. Would you be interested? Have a look at Module:Citation/CS1/Configuration for an example of what the configuration page looks like on this wiki. IABot automatically reads this module and auto-adapts to it so it will always be aware of changes made to the local setup of cite templates.—CYBERPOWER (Around) 18:54, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
I am certainly not an administrator with technical skills to configure templates. I've seen on en wiki the paramter "url-status" which determines the different order of the links (url/archive) - like in [13] (no 9 - dead, no 10 - live). Actually on pl wiki (as I think) all citing templates put the original link to the end in clickable "z adresu" (dead/alive) - as an example [14] (ref. 1 and 2). Hi there,

You've got mail

You've got mail KINDLY SEE AN EMAIL ITS CONFIDENTIAL Love and Respect Aadihussain (talk) 18:29, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

Regarding that message

The message I sent was auto generated, it said that you were the author of the image, I don’t know all the details that’s what twinkle said when I was suggesting deletion, hence why you got the notification. I agree, the image is not good, although your edit summary 'WTF' was less than WP:CIVIL, so I’d suggest avoiding things like that in the future. Thanks, Blanchey (talk) 11:50, 30 August 2022 (UTC)

WTF is not uncivil. It's my very appropriate expression of how disturbed I was seeing that image, and my subsequent confusion of getting your autogenerated message. I don't know why Twinkle thought I authored the image, but I did not. I don't work with images.—CYBERPOWER (Message) 11:56, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
I see. Yes I agree the image is disgusting. The reason I was upset is because I was scared I have done something wrong and will get in trouble as I did it in good faith. Red rose told me to suggest deletion at commons instead. But yes that is weird that it thought you were the author. Blanchey (talk) 11:58, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
It must have been this page creation. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 12:02, 30 August 2022 (UTC)

@Liz: are we seriously doing this again? This is for the upcoming ArbCom Elections. It's going to be empty for a bit, but it very much will be filled and should exist.—CYBERPOWER (Around) 01:32, 3 September 2022 (UTC)

Odd behaviour

Am I doing something wrong that is confusing your bot? I get several like this. I protect a page here and mark the protection page and then a minute later the bot arrives and says the article is already protected. The other day saw one that was 9 minutes after I'd made the protection. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 05:44, 24 September 2022 (UTC)a
