Basketball playing years in infobox

DaHuzyBru - Consensus has been for the playing years to reflect actual playing dates for club tenures. I edited Seth Curry and Maalik Wayns with this consensus in mind. For historical players we use game logs to determine years played (so only "1988" would show if he played 5 games in January, 1988 during the 1987-88 season), and modern players follow the same standard even though we usually have better contract status info. This is also consistent with the convention not listing clubs where the player signed but never played (we make an exception for players who have signed but have not yet had the opportunity to play - such as an August signee for a season starting in October). A recent extreme case is Andrew Bynum, who doesn't even show the Sixers in his club history though he was under contract all last year. If you think we should use a different standard, that is fair game, but we'd need to achieve sufficient consensus at WP:NBA or WP:BASKETBALL. Rikster2 (talk) 13:40, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

Sources in articles considered for deletion

Thanks for helping improve articles like Chris Babb that are being considered for deletion. I do ask that sources like the ones added here not be deleted, or alternatively are incorporated into the article. Note that players that do not meet WP:NBASKETBALL, can still meet WP:GNG. However, GNG asks for multiple sources of independent sources. Some may argue that NBA.com is not independent enough for a player invited to an NBA training camp. Maurice Harkless

As a third-generation Puerto Rican, Harkless is incapable of directly requesting the Puerto Rican citizenship document without residing in PR for a year. In other words, politically he is not Puerto Rican. "Puerto Rican-American", which is actually the proper spelling, is generally used when referring to second-generation people. Due to citizenship being a hotopic surrounding the status issue, I decided to include the distinctions between "political" and "FIBA" citizenship, which is meant to be a solomonic solution that prevents future edit wars once his name catches on in PR. I don't think that keeping two words really affects the article in any negative way, and it does prevent future damage. If you want to keep the statistics all over the page, I don't have any problem despite thinking that everything looks better if they were uniform. What is going on with Royce White? He got recalled to the Kings, who were on a road trip. They seem to be dressing 12 instead of 13 on the road trip and he seems not to be travelling. Depends on the level of coverage of the league. If the Mexican league he is in doesn't get much coverage then he may not meet GNG. Unfortunately "fully professional" basketball players aren't given the benefit of the doubt for notability like in soccer. Really, no skin off my nose, I am pretty cynical about notability standards - they are very inconsistent. I'm just really familiar with the Watts case since he played for my Alma mater. It is well known, and that it is "silly" is your personal opinion. Also the reference given is not meant as an exact mention of the nickname, but a reference to it, since you removed it, it was added as a way in good faith to appease that. But you continue to say that edit was false. As you point out one single grammatical change that is necessary in writing the text, to discredit it, even though it does not. So it should not be in the heading? Then it can be under personal info then. If you have not noticed, many of the NBA players and D-League players have them listed, something you indeed should have noticed since you say that you mostly edit those player profiles.Bluesangrel (talk) 05:07, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Anyway, the NBA D-League itself refers to him as Greek Freak 2 in games, during broadcasts, in numerous videos on YouTube, etc. Do you consider NBA D League a source or not? We are not really here to debate the legitimacy of sources as individuals such as yourself see it fit one way or another personally in your own opinion. Just to explain it to you, Giannis has been called Greek Freak for a long time, before he was even in NBA or USA, and his brother was too. This was in Greece. Fisher playing position

Basketball-reference.com lists Fisher as both PG/SG likely since Reggie Jackson was the backup PG in Fisher's last stint with OKC. In reality, Fisher was never a true PG with Lakers under Jackson, often interchanging with Kobe in triangle offense. Including what player the draft pick was later used to draft IS pertinent to the player. It allows the reader to see what kind of value was traded away for the player. If Aaron Afflalo were traded for a draft pick that later became a superstar it would most certainly be of use to the reader. Remember this is an encyclopedia and as much information as possible should be included in every article. It also expands the article with additional information and links to other pages. I saw that you added ESPN.com EL to Jeremy Lin, presumably because {{Basketballstats}} does not display it. The background is that it used to be supported, but was deprecated per Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_National_Basketball_Association/Archive_19#ESPN_NBA_bios. I've deleted the link from Lin's article. Antetokounmpo was not a Greek League all star

Source - [4] He did not play in the Greek League. He never played in the Greek League at all in his career. He was not eligible to be voted to or selected to the Greek League all star game because he was never a player in the Greek League. He did not play in the Greek Basket League. He played in Greece's 2nd tier league, it's 2nd division, the Greek A2 Basketball League. So of course he could not be an all star of a league he never even played in. The way it works is at the Greek all star weekend players from the lower divisions can't be all stars, but they can compete at the slam dunk contest and at the 3 point contest. Giannis' brother, Thanasis, was competing at the slam dunk contest. He too never played in the Greek League, so he too could not be a Greek all star. But he was competing at the slam dunk contest, which players from lower level leagues are allowed to do. So Giannis and his brother were there because of that. At the end of the Greek all star game, with like you know a minute in the game or something like that, the fans wanted to see Giannis play and were clapping and calling for his name, so the coaches obliged them and said he could go in the game for a few moments and play. And he played for a few possessions and the fans cheered and were happy then. That was it. This should not though be credited in the site as he was "a Greek League all star". It's really not accurate and correct, and because it's getting repeated in other places over the internet, even though it isn't actually true. I haven't looked through all of the articles you created (and don't intend to) and just want to point out that there's another bunch of borderline cases there which might be AfD'ed sooner or later as well (not by me). On a general note, I just don't see any sense in pushing the notability threshold that much lower than the guidelines propose, especially considering popular topics such as basketball certainly aren't among those in real need of further expansion. Hi DaHuzyBru - not ure if you are looking for any new articles to create, but I had a couple of suggestions. First, Anthony Drmic is an Australian entering his senior year at Boise State. He has represented Australia internationally at the 2013 Summer Universade and will be a top candidate for his conference player of the year and is in good position to pass the 2000 point barrier for his college career. Second, Jack Salt is on the New Zealand national team and will be a freshman for the University of Virginia this season. He is currently on the 2014 NZ World Cup team (though I can't remember if they've made final roster cuts). He is a player I could probably get a nice photo of once the season starts as I live quite near the U. of VA's campus. The last is Daniel Kickert who was recently signed by Melbourne United. Nets' draft-day trade

2014 Draft Trade Tracker doesn't explicitly say that it was a four-team trade while the official press release from the Brooklyn Nets explicitly says that it was separate draft trades:

The Brooklyn Nets have acquired the draft rights to guard Markel Brown (#44 pick) from the Minnesota Timberwolves, guard Xavier Thames (#59 pick) from the Toronto Raptors and forward Cory Jefferson (#60 pick) from the Philadelphia 76ers in separate draft night trades, each in exchange for cash considerations, General Manager Billy King announced.

The reason I edited it like that is because the way the name of the club is written is always as AENK. The name of the club AEN Kifisia, or Nea Kifisia, but the club's name is always written as AENK. In other words the name of the club is not in line with what is the same as what is written as what club you would play for. That's the reason I edited it like that. Not that it matters. This might help show and explain it better. This is how it is in official Greek League site. [8] It is Greek letters, but as you can see it is AENK. The same at the club's official website [9] as it shows it goes by the name Αθλητική Ένωση Νέας Κηφισιάς (A.E.N.K.) I guess an easy way to explain it would be like how comparing to an NBA team, the official name of say Cleveland Cavaliers is Cleveland Cavaliers, then there is "Cavs", or like New York Knickerbockers, then there is "Knicks". It depends on what the team wishes to use as the common name. The actual name of the club is not necessarily always the same as the common name. About foreign players in NBA draft

I saw you asked on Pero Antic page history about did he enter the draft. Just so you know, that's not how the NBA draft works. All non-USA players in the world are entered into the draft automatically without their permission, whether they enter or not. Even if they ask not to be entered into the draft specifically they are still entered into it. Many players in Europe for example specifically asked not to be entered in the draft and were anyway and got drafted and of course were angry about it. That is how the draft works. There is a big misconception about having to enter the draft or give your permission. It does not work that way. It only works that way if you want to enter in the draft early. But not when the NBA deems you as "auto draft eligible". So yes, every single player in the world that is non-American is entered into the draft whether they actually want to or not, even without their consent actually. So yes, for example Antic was entered into the draft, as was every other player in Europe, every single year. It's one of the reasons most players drafted from Europe will never play in the NBA because they were drafted without consent by the NBA and without having ever entered the draft or having even anted to be drafted. It's a very strange system but that is how the NBA does it. So yes, Antic was indeed entered into the draft, it's just that he did not enter himself, no European player has to do so, the NBA does it on their own.Bluesangrel (talk) 04:20, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

@Bluesangrel: I think the point is though, foreign players are automatically entered into the draft when the are technically age eligible. Personally, I'm not sure the exact situation with Europeans players, but for Australian players, they aren't really "entered" into the draft but they are just technically eligible to be selected. Obviously, none of them are ever going to be selected, just like Antić in 2011, but I guess because he was of age, that was the draft he was assigned to?? Australian players like Steven Marković was originally entered in the 2005 draft, but later withdrew, and was then listed as undrafted in 2007. I think it's pretty arbitrary and simply to do with age i.e. 21 or 22. Overall point is I wouldn't add 2007 to Marković's draft year in his infobox, so I don't think Antić's needs it either (and/or any other similar cases). The way the NBA draft works for all non-American players is they are automatically entered into the draft at the 22 birth year. So yes, they are indeed officially entered into the draft. It is a very bizarre system indeed, but that is how it works. There has been some talk about agents and players in Europe trying to sue the NBA over this, and that it might even be against some labor laws in Europe, but nothing has been changed as of yet in the NBA draft rules.Bluesangrel (talk) 21:30, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

I would just add though, with that being said, I don't think it is pertinent to add that non-American players were undrafted if they did not voluntarily enter the draft themselves. I don't think it has to be added to every player's template, like it would to an American player, because it is not pertinent. But, it is indeed technically correct. So yeah, it is a bit weird. I would like to discuss on this topic. In my opinion, based on what I read from several sources, non-US players who signed a professional contract in any league other than NBA (even on the US soil), are automatically eligible for the NBA Draft at the age of 22 in the calendar year of the Draft. Also, whether the player's birthday is before or after NBA Draft in the calendar year of Draft, he is a part of that generation. For example the case is the 27th pick of this year Draft, Bogdan Bogdanović. Even without declaring for Draft, he went chosen. The same thing is with players who went undrafted. Serbian national basketball team

Hi! I want your opinion on whether should I start splitting records of the Serbian national basketball team.

It became independent country back in 2006, and FIBA, in my opinion, started to separate records since 2007 from the Yugoslavian team. However, the only issue about the legality of such change in reasoning, should be the FIBA Rankings, as Serbia was well-positioned and after 2006, meaning FIBA treated this team as a successor of results (see formula how the points are allocated and rankings formed).

I know there was a lot of discussion on this topic, about should we keep all the results before 1992 together with those after. And we sort of solved that lets say "conspiracy". The big problem in issues like this one is the emotional connection of the Serbian people to the successes of former teams. Although, IOC is clearly on this, as they treat Serbia as a new country, and accepts the results just since 2007 and not before (there is an exception for some early years of the 20th century). I am reasoning that FIBA started to think the same way as IOC since recently.

So, I would gladly start creating FR Yugoslavia national basketball team article, and "cut/paste" the results from 1992–2006 into it. Of course, I would also provide some good general description in the both. Also, I don't think a new discussion is a good solution in this case, as the result of suck actions in the past failed. All this is only possible if you agree, and if you are ready to provide backup for my work, meaning of monitoring pages related to it and even by putting locks for IP-s in first month or two. I saw your addition of DLeague stat link to Malcolm Lee. NBA.com links are always changing, so not sure if this is worth the time. Plus, basketball-reference link has the DLeague stats now. There was WP:SILENCE before at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_National_Basketball_Association/Archive_26#D-League_external_links when the DLeague link was removed from Template:Basketballstats. @Bagumba: I'm usually always on board with WP:NBA consensus etc, but this is pretty dumb. There's nothing wrong with adding a player's d-league profile to the external links section. Regarding your comment on how "NBA.com links are always changing", I disagree. Since I've been editing Wikipedia, only the d-league profiles have changed. NBA.com is pretty good at keeping links working. All the NBA players profile are still under the xx_yy format. Also, BR's d-league stats are sometimes incorrect or pose different stats to other sources. i.e. when I checked Chris Copeland's BR d-league stats, they listed 19 games and 10.1ppg whereas nbadleague.com listed 20 games and 9.8ppg. The profiles for retired players have changed at NBA.com in the past too. If you and others want the DLeague stats, it's better to wrap it in a the basketballstats template. Some nice detail you added to Durant's and Westbrook articles. I copied some of that into 2014–15 Oklahoma City Thunder season. Looking back on 2012–13 when I was extensively editing 2012–13 Los Angeles Lakers season and a lot of their players, I'd probably do things a bit differently with LAL and put most of the detail in the team season article first, and go back weeks/months later and copy what is truly relevant (with the benefit of hindsight) into the players articles. No problem. There is no deadline, can always go and pare down later if needed. Keeping the article up-to-date is one things, but it's sometime hard to determine here and now what will be "notable" later. There was discussion at Talk:Kobe_Bryant#loss_to_Cleveland a few years back on details of individual games in bios. I don't think we should be using hyperbole when editing pages. Instead of saying things like "Losing none of his touch" etc for Kevin Durant, we should just state "He came back and scored _____ on __ for ___ shooting" to make more encyclopedic and professional. Player article ideas

If you are looking for articles to create, one thought is that there are a number of current NBL players (very good ones in some cases) who don't have articles. Since these players all meet NBASKETBALL, they are pretty non-controversial to create. Another thing I noticed on your sandbox page is that you are looking at sources for Joe Trapani. I have had Trapani on my to do list for awhile (I lived in Boston while he was at Boston College and attended many games) - he also meets NBASKETBALL having played in the Italian League. Also, since he currently plays in France, his career is well documented (like all GFrench League profiles, his has a very detailed account of his career). I have a few areas of focus for player articles - lately I have been creating stubs for old American NBL players who are also redlinks in college All-American artricles from the 30s and 40s. I am trying to fill in redlinks on these articles, conference player of the year templates/articles, college national champion templates/articles, and I also try to create articles for notable basketball figures as they die. When I have time, I'll create an American player in the Italian or Spanish leagues (all meet NBASKETBALL) or a current college player who meets GNG and who I think is a likely award winner, draft pick or future pro in a significant league. I agree there are many NBL players I could get to such as Anthony Petrie, but finding references for the Australian NBL is always difficult unless you find it at the time. I find that to be the case not just with NBL as well actually, hence my sandbox. But yes, for Joe Trapani, I started having a look at him when I saw him listed on your page. While I haven't committed to creating him yet, it wouldn't be too difficult as there is plenty on him. I do admire your efforts Rikster, going through and creating all these past players – historical players, and basketball for that matter, are not my forte as I try to just stick to the now. On these two I was confused, one of these is a box score and the other is the play by play. The play by play is the 4th quarter play by play so who ever checks it can see that he scored the last 15 points which is what it says in his Bio. For this right here, I posted one source from Espn, the box score showing he had 16 assists that day, and the other one is a youtube video showing all 16 assists. I figure the box score is more reliable to someone checking to see the 16 assists, so I figure I'll post that one.

For this one, in Kemba's Bio, I only put this game in there because it was the start of his 3 consecutive games of 30 or more points streak, and because he passed Kendall Gill to move into 10th on the Charlotte Hornets scoring list this game. The thing is the only places that show the Hornets top 10 scoring list are basketba;; reference and wikipedia. Neither sources show the day, and both of them have his current amount of points, instead of the point he had after that game of (4160). They also don't show Kendall Gill's name anymore because he isn't in the top 10 anymore. Basically I'm wondering is this game something I'd still need to reference? Also should I still reference basketball reference and show Kemba is 10th on the scoring list, even if it will continue to update as he scores more?
