Commons images on the main page[edit]

Hello! When placing a Commons image on the main page, please remember to first upload it to the English Wikipedia and tag it with the {{c-uploaded}} template. Otherwise, it will not be protected (so a vandal can replace it at the Commons and change what appears on our main page). Thanks!  :-) —David Levy 12:40, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Thanks for the tip about putting commons images on the main page. I could be wrong (as don't very often edit the main page), but I don't think that image of suharto is a commons image. I took it from his bio page on Wikipedia. Yes, I protected the image - but am I supposed to upload it to Commons also? Now I am confused - can you clarify the matter for me? Thanks! David Cannon (talk) 12:58, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The image in question (Soeharto.jpg) is, indeed, a Wikimedia Commons image. Because no file with the same name exists at the English Wikipedia, it appears here when transcluded. (The Wikimedia Commons serves as a repository of free media that can be used by the various Wikimedia projects without uploading it to each one individually.)
You can identify a Commons image by looking for the following on the information page:

This file is from $1 and may be used by other projects.

Protecting the image page here does not prevent someone from editing the image at the Wikimedia Commons (thereby changing what appears on our main page), as has occurred on several occasions (but did not occur this time). The solution is to save the Commons image to your computer and upload it to the English Wikipedia under the same title (copying and pasting the Commons description and adding the {{c-uploaded}} template). After you've done that, there is no need to manually protect the image (because the main page's protection will automatically cascade to it).
I hope that I have been of assistance. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.  :-) —David Levy 13:28, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Earl Paulk[edit]

David, I noted that you have reverted my edits to the Earl Paulk bio page (of a living person). Taking your admonition in the spirit of fairness and under the extensive guidelines of “do no harm” we do need to begin a dialogue on some “talk page”. If this page is not the place to have the conversation = consensus about edits, let me know specifically WHERE this conversation takes place. Admittedly, I am new to this open architecture style of history reporting so I may lean on you as an expert in this endeavor in order to gain some minor proficiency.

We need to begin a serious dialogue regarding the information posted on the Earl Paulk page as most of it, although factually referenced from credible sources is all based on reported innuendo, accusation, hearsay, and libelous material that has been legally found to be baseless and without merit. Please advise as available as to where the talk page for the Earl Paulk bio page is and I will earnestly begin the consensus building there. A tag has been placed on Template:Armenian parties in Lebanon requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{transclusionless}}</noinclude>).

Kinijoji Maivalili[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Kinijoji Maivalili, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Kinijoji Maivalili. J.S. Bach[edit]

This is a response to the J.S. Bach message you left on my page. Sadly, I could not provide any "reputable" sources, so it seems the information originally given by you has been replaced. Thusly, the world now lives in ignorance of the fact that he still has living decendents. Needless to say this irritated me, but oh well. Sorry I could not get any "reputable" sources. --Johnnywhoa (talk) 13:45, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Christianity in Korea[edit]

Hi there. I intended to come here sooner, but was neglectful, and for that I apologize. I've come to thank you, first, for the obvious hard work that you've put into the Christianity in Korea article both as a writer and as an editor. It's a really good article and I've enjoyed working on it. Which brings me to my second point: I hope that the changes I've made haven't offended or annoyed you in any way. My goal is always to improve Wikipedia, but I try very hard not to do that at the expense of the feelings of other editors. I know very well how personal and emotional a writing project can be, and if anything that I've changed bothers you in any way, I hope you'll feel free to talk to me about it. I'm very open to having my own edits edited wherever it can make the article better.

My third reason for posting here is to thank you for reverting the deletion of the last section of the article. As you probably saw, I was unsure about what to do and I appreciate you stepping in. And finally, I want to compliment you on your user page. Not only is it attractive and informative, but I like the sense of openness and friendliness that it presents. Very nice job.

I think that's everything now.  :) Thanks again. Have a great week. -- edi (talk) 02:17, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Obafemiawolowo.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 19:46, 4 October 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sherool (talk) 19:46, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Senate of Puerto Rico[edit]

Hello my old buddy, David. How are you? I am so glad to hear from you. How are things in your part of the world?

In regard to your question, I asked one of my fellow friends who has more knowledge of the political workings of Puerto Rico then I do to answer it. Here is his answer:

The NPP obtained a "copo" in the Senate; that is, it swept all positions, winning both seats in each of the eight senatorial districts, as well as electing its six at-large candidates. The PDP managed to elect five of its six at-large candidates (there are 11 at-large elective seats). Since the NPP elected 22 senators and the PDP minority only 5, the PR Constitution's minority representation rules are activated. The Constitution guarantees the minority a minimum of 9 seats. Having elected only 5, the PDP is entitled to four add-on seats, who will then be considered at-large senators. They will be Sen. Juan Eugenio Hernández Mayoral, the losing at-large candidate, Sen. José Luis Dalmau and the two candidates from the Guayama district. These last 3 were the district candidates that lost by the smallest margins. Sen. Dalmau was recently reelected Senate Minority Leader for the new term.

A few significant analitical points:

-Sen. Dalmau is serving his third term as PDP Floor Leader, quite an accomplishment.

-Outgoing Sen. President McClintock transformed a small 9-member minority into a very comfortable 17-member majority and, now, the constitutional maximum of 22.

Hey, would you like to take a look at some pictures of me with some top Puerto Rican political leaders? My son, Antonio Jr., wrote this article about me, check it out: Tony Santiago. I want to wish you and your lovely family a Happy Thanksgiving (don't know if you celebrate that there). Let me know what you think of my friend's answer. Tony the Marine (talk) 21:25, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

More[edit]

After your last question my friend added the following:

"The NPP won by a roughly 53 to 42 margin, with the new Puerto Ricans for Puerto Rico Party (PPR) and PIP divying up the difference. These last two parties did not reach the minimum threshhold to remain as registered parties and will have to collect about 100,000 signatures each to re-register. The NPP's victory margin was the largest in 44 years, since the PDP's last landslide victory in 1964."

General Voters Party[edit]

Hi. Would you happen to know what the current status of the General Voters Party in Fiji is? The article United Peoples Party (Fiji) seems to say that it no longer exists, but the template on Fiji's political parties lists it as a current "minor party". The reason why I'm asking is that the GVP has just issued a statement regarding its views on electoral reforms and Fiji's potential suspension from the PIF. Which suggests that it's still very much a live party, but information about it is scarce. Is it an actual party, or simply an alternative name still used by the UPP? Aridd (talk) 09:54, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. Thanks for your reply. With the current uncertainties and lack of available information, I suggest we leave it for now. Assuming Fiji holds elections within the next few years (in whatever form), I suppose we'll have a better view of the existing, registered parties at that point. Fair use rationale for File:Pierregemayel.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Pierregemayel.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Sfan00 IMG (talk) 23:46, 11 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm working together with a group of people on the events which led up to Lt. Teofilo Marxuach to order what is considered the first shot to be fired in WWI on behave of the United States. The event occurred not in Europe, but in Puerto Rico of all places. The thing is that six years from now, it will be the 100th anniversary of said event and we want the government to commemorate it. Did you see the Wikipedia article, Tony Santiago, that my son wrote about me? Not bad, don't you think? Tell me what you and your family have been up to. Replaceable fair use Image:KHTing.jpg[edit]

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:KHTing.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 17:23, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. The article Jack Simpson on Wikiquote has been proposed for deletion. The proposed-deletion notice added to the article should explain why.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. In the news[edit]

Hello! Regarding this edit, I want to bring some errors to your attention.
1. You added an item for which the article was not sufficiently updated.
2. You did not write the blurb in the present tense.
3. You switched to a Commons image without first uploading it to Wikipedia and protecting it. (MPUploadBot remedied the problem, but someone could have vandalised the image in the interim.)
Please acquaint yourself with the section's procedures before performing further updates. Thank you! —David Levy 01:44, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In reference to the above, you might like to peruse WP:ITN/A at your leisure. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:04, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

I notice you commented on the discussion page of Takapuna Assembly of God that you attended services there. Were you attending during (a) Hughes' resignation and (b) the rebranding to Harbourside? I have some questions relating to both events and was wondering if you could shed some life.

Thanks

Hi, please don't add items to ITN without a consensus at WP:ITN/C and an adequately updated article. Also, if you add an item, assuming it has a consensus and an update, please be sure to write it in the present tense. Two months ago you undeleted the article on Luis Cabral (evangelist) and asked for five days to link the article to sources confirming his notability. It showed up on my list of Unreferenced BLPs without any WikiProject today... did you forget to undelete the talk page too? More importantly, the three references that are in the article, two are to his personal website, the other to the organisation that he works for. As you are an administrator, I would hope that you wouldn't need reminding of the requirements of verifiability and the need for the sources to be from reliable sources and independent of the subject, and instead you were meaning to get back to the article, but have been too busy elsewhere. I will check again next week and if the required references to prove notability haven't been added, I'll nominate it for AfD, as I can't see any notability from the article - he's just doing his job. Nomination of Luis Cabral (evangelist) for deletion[edit]

A discussion has begun about whether the article Luis Cabral (evangelist), which you created or to which you contributed, should be deleted. While contributions are welcome, an article may be deleted if it is inconsistent with Wikipedia policies and guidelines for inclusion, explained in the deletion policy.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Luis Cabral (evangelist) until a consensus is reached, and you are welcome to contribute to the discussion.

You may edit the article during the discussion, including to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. The-Pope (talk) 02:54, 25 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Hrawi.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Hrawi.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 16:57, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article Esther Williams (academic) has been proposed for deletion because under Wikipedia policy, all biographies of living persons created after March 18, 2010, must have at least one source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Mhiji 02:32, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! I thought I should let you know that while I have added one reference each to these articles, both of which which have been tagged as an unreferenced biographies of a living person since March 2009, I have concerns about the lack of reliable sources for much of the content. I have posted a request for additional input at WikiProject Fiji. Since you created both articles, perhaps you would also be kind enough to provide your sources for the content as per WP:CITE.--Plad2 (talk) 09:11, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs[edit]

I am concerned about your apparent lack of awareness of the current expectations in regards to WP:BLPs. The long list above shows that you have made a lot of articles without any references (admittantly some/most were created in a time when references weren't required - but you were notified of them a year ago and about 16 are still unreferenced). I found another one today, Epeli Kanakana, that you have recently undeleted, but failed to reference. It even contained an unreferenced allegation of corruption, which again you reinserted in 2007 without supplying a reference. So, whilst I see that you are not very active anymore, please, next time you log on, acknowledge that you do understand and agree with the need to reference all articles, especially BLPs. If you don't think that this is an important part of being a wikipedia admin, then I would suggest that you relinquish that status and give up the bit. The-Pope 13:55, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Sangeeta Niranjan, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising that only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an acceptable page. Please read the general criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item G11, as well as the guidelines on spam.

If you can indicate why the subject of this page is not blatant advertising, . Clicking that button will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. You are welcome to edit the page to fix this problem, but please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. As well as removing promotional phrasing, it helps to add factual encyclopaedic information to the page, and add citations from independent reliable sources to ensure that the page will be verifiable. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Jussychoulex (talk) 18:16, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not make articles about a living person that are entirely negative in tone and unsourced. Wikipedia has a policy of verifiability and any negative information we use must be reliably sourced, and our articles must be balanced. Negative unreferenced biographies of living people are not tolerated by Wikipedia and are speedily deleted. Users who continue to create or repost such pages and images in violation of our biographies of living persons policy will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Thank you.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
