Thanks for removing the redlink that failed MOS:DABRL, I should have spotted that!

However, you seem to be under a misconception regarding project banners on dab talk pages. In general, a dab page should have no talk page at all, except if there is something to discuss (typically whether or not an entry belongs on the page, or whether or not there is a primary topic, and if so what it is). There was a time a while ago when some editors went around adding the dab project banner to dab talk pages, but this is now actively discouraged. However, if there is a real discussion at the page, there is no harm in adding the dab project banner.

The India project banner was correct at the time it was added, since the article at the time it was added permalink was not a dab page, but was about the town which is now at Mahal, India. The banner is no longer correct, since it now belongs with the latter article, not the former.

The Middle-earth project banner should never have been added at all, since it applied only to one entry permalink in a (badly-written) dab page.

In general, it makes no sense at all to add project banners to dab pages, since if they were added for each project relevant to every topic covered, the result would be a meaningless and useless profusion of banners.

Accordingly, I'm going to remove the India and Middle-earth project banners from the talk page. If you wish to restore the India banner, I won't revert you, since I don't want to get into an edit war on such a trivial matter and it is possible to make an argument that most of the topics relate to India - although it is not helpful and sets a bad precedent. The Middle-earth banner remains unacceptable, since it relates only to a single entry.

In fact the "best" solution would probably be to copy the single sentence on the dab talk page to Talk:Mahal, India and then delete the talk page, but I don't think it worth troubling any admin to do the deletion.

Please note also that the dab project is not "my" project, I am not a member of the project, and it is not my main focus on Wikipedia.

--NSH001 (talk) 19:01, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Is that your personal opinion or is there a proper guideline that prohibits adding project banners to disambiguation pages? {{WPBannerMeta}} has explicit support for creating categories of project-related disambiguation pages and those are in fact widely used, see Category:Disambig-Class articles. De728631 (talk) 19:10, 15 January 2012 (UTC)
I've opened a thread at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Disambiguation#Project banners on dab talk pages to clarify this matter. De728631 (talk) 19:24, 15 January 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict)If all the topics on a dab page are covered by the same project, then it could make sense for that project to have a banner there, so an absolute ban is not appropriate, though I think in most cases they are pointless. Note also that over the years there has been a move to make dab pages as minimalist as possible, since they serve only to aid user navigation, (all the topic detail belonging in the target articles), so what was acceptable a few years ago may no longer be so. I will take a look to see if a guideline exists, but at the moment I'm working on a new article which I'm drafting off-wiki, so it may have to wait a little while. --NSH001 (talk) 19:43, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Afghanistan and Denglisch

Hi De728631,
Thanks for taking the time to acknowledge my comments of June 2011 concerning the German Armed Forces casualties in Afghanistan article. I see it has been trimmed by some 30 edits (mostly by you), totalling about 55k; although it could probably do with the knife being taken to it again.

Until I took a look at your user page, I did not realise there was such a (quasi) thing as 'Denglisch'. I have been using the term for some time now, so to see that there was a link to an article left me rather breathless!
My wife, who is German, sees nothing wrong with denglisch sayings - one that sticks in the mind is her use of 'tapen' (recording a TV programme).
To carry-on the English connection, I see that Marlboro cigarettes have recently been advertised in English, but this is in Germany. I also seem to remember in France they passed a law a few years ago prohibiting the use of English words if there was a suitable French equivalent. How the likes of Macdonalds and Burger King got round it I've no idea.

By the way, I see that your Rap music user box has the letter 'C' added to it. I couldn't agree more.

Regards

While you may likely be able to make your way thru the Swedish here is a translation I was working on,if you're interested. Will leave it up for a bit, but w/ copyright considerations will delete soon. Unfortunately, there is no mention of the Frisian Islands, so that piece has yet to be to be sorted out. When I get time will try to fix Jonas Bronck article, unless you feel inclined. Regards Djflem (talk) 23:47, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

The Frisian islands are mentioned in the quote inside the Paulsen reference in the current article. He writes that Bronck was the leader of a group emigrants from North Frisia who settled in the Manhattan area. De728631 (talk) 18:08, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi - do you really think that http://www.allmovie.com/artist/p125316 - is a reliable source WP:RS for a disputed date of birth? Youreallycan 22:35, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Yes, otherwise I wouldn't have added it. Allmovie is a commercial data base similar to Allmusic. In my opinion it is a reliable source. De728631 (talk) 22:40, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited Trod Nossel, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages The Shags, Plan 9 and Steppenwolf (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

3O and new probable sock

Per your suggestion, I filed a 3O request. However, another IP, 203.118.187.226, stepped in and quickly made the fourth revert on WLU's behalf. Given that 203.118.187.167, 203.118.187.43, and 203.118.187.209 were found to be WLU's sockpuppets[1], 203.118.187.226 probably will be too. Should I put the 3O on hold until the new SPI closes and it officially becomes a two-editor conflict again? BitterGrey (talk) 05:33, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

Template:NDB

You edited the Template:NDB some time ago. The web link and the structure in the Template:NDB do not work anymore because of a change in the web address. Is it possible to fix that? Thanks! --Stone (talk) 06:34, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Which web link are you referring to? In the example that's given in the documentation page, the "full text online" works alright, but there's not Wikisource article to be linked. Could you show me the example you were wondering about? De728631 (talk) 08:55, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Nicolai, Bernd (2007), "Andreas Schlüter", Neue Deutsche Biographie (in German), vol. 23, Berlin: Duncker & Humblot, pp. 111–113

is one which does not work. --Stone (talk) 19:39, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

That wasn't the template's fault or the web address but faulty template parameters that had been added. The following produces a working "online text", however there is still no Wikisource article yet, which we can't help either over here.

Battle of Pancorbo

Hi De728631,

It will become a disambiguation in about 10 minutes after I create the 816 article...

In such cases, please use the following steps: first create your alternative article(s), then move the existing page to a different title like Battle of Pancorbo (1808) and only then may you overwrite existing articles/redirects. Anything else is confusing and mixes up the continuity of the edit history. De728631 (talk) 08:45, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Again,

That is fine, thanks for the guidance.

I'm sorry, but that's not fine. You created the new page Battle of Pancorbo (1808) by copy&paste, which is not allowed. Please use the "move" button on top of the existing article when you want to change the title of a page. Thus the edit history is preserved. I'm going to call for assistance from an administrator to get this fixed. De728631 (talk) 08:50, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi, noted. 9th century article can be found at Battle of Pancorbo (816)

  • That was a good answer to a damn hard question, even if others are focusing on the minutia. The key is that no admin has all the answers, which is why we depend on the experience of others. I hadn't seen you before, but a look at your contribs, history and that answer earned my vote. It was a touch question, but it is actually topical as I've been discussing the issue with an exArb, and a similar issue is at User talk:Avanu over his ASCII art Coke can. We admins do see stuff like this from time to time. Had you gotten the question "wrong" but displayed the same calm approach, I wouldn't have held it against you. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 15:35, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
    • Thank you! Yes, this question made me think and even though someone apparently missed its mentioning, I had been at WP:UP to look it up, but I didn't find it very helpful in this case. I was even preparing the following answer for the small font debate when it got closed:
Actually neither WP:Userpages nor WP:Trademarks offer any specific phrase that reads "you must not display any company and brand logos on your userpage" – or I must've missed it. Instead at the userpages policy there is a phrase to avoid "advertising or promotion of an individual, business, organization, group, or viewpoint unrelated to Wikipedia (such as commercial sites or referral links)" that leaves quite some room for interpretation. From Dennis Brown's question it was not clear whether the logo was meant to be the sole content of the page nor was there any comment on image size. One small icon among otherwise non-promotional content is not extensive advertising or excessive unrelated content in my opinion, as opposed to one logo filling the entire page. Maybe we should have the policy pages updated to clarify the use of brand logos and names on user pages? And as I mentioned in my original answer I wouldn't have acted on my own but would have asked for advice. So, unless you define "failure" as not knowing any possible interpretation of any guideline by heart, I don't see how I failed this question because the question was "what do you do". Answer: ask for help. De728631 (talk) 15:43, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
You got it. There were a number of ways to answer correctly or wrongly, and it was a question designed not for an answer about trademarks, but one of process. I think Leaky is missing the point in his minutia, perhaps looking for the cloud in the silver lining. And again, I imagine a good portion of admins would have answered "wrong", so how you answered was as important as what you answered. Once you get the bit, never forget that we are all pieces to the same puzzle who rely on each other, and if in doubt, find someone or some group that is more experienced. Never quit learning. I would be lying if I didn't admit I was a little proud of that question. You should be in the answer. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 16:11, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

Metal review sites

The short answer is that there aren't many. I tend to use print sources where possible; Terrorizer, Zero Tolerance, Decibel are all pretty good. There's also Martin Popoff's extensive collection of reviews books; he has a website but doesn't post his reviews there. Allmusic, and any biogs from MusicMight written by Garry Sharpe-Young (username: Taniwha) pass WP:RS (as the content has been independently published). Web material written by independently published professional journalists is fine also; MetalIreland I seem to remember has an ex-Terrorizer scribe for editor. The ones I've never been convinced by, but I have seen other editors using as LordsofMetal, ChroniclesofChaos, Metal Observer and Metalstorm; they're good websites IMO but fail WP:RS, so shouldn't be used for genres or reviews (Metal Archives is a definite No). If I think of any others I'll drop you a link! Oh, Chad Bowar's heavymetal.about.com is fine. To be honest though, if you can't find a review for something out of that lot, it's probably too obscure to pass WP:N. Blackmetalbaz (talk) 12:48, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

File:JRR Tolkien signature - from Commons.svg

The Commons discussion is absurd — a few letters are too simple for copyright — and even if the arguments held water, it would be standard practise to tag the image with {{Do not move to Commons}} and then to continue using it here without restrictions. Nyttend (talk) 14:17, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

User:The Cosins Flim Industries

Hi there, I have reason to believe that User:The Cosins Flim Industries who you just blocked, is the same person as User:Mustafa Flim Industries, based on the fact that Cosin recreated the previously deleted article Anokhe. I'm just wondering what can be done to prevent this account from being recreated? Iamthemuffinman (talk) 15:40, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

They do quack a lot, so I'd also say that this is sockpuppetry. Please feel free to file an official SPI to confirm it. Recreation of other accounts can't really be prevented but if it happens again, we might at least salt the relevant page names. De728631 (talk) 15:47, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for quickly taking action on our request to restore the page moves done by User:Ifightback to its original Filipino title. Mea culpa -- hastily, I looked at the New York Times article and saw that an image of its front page was posted there. I failed to look carefully enough to realize that it was from the early 1900s and therefore, copyright free! I presumed that it was a fair use and proceeded to create the image. I'm usually much more careful. Thanks for your prompt action._ _ _ _ 83d40m (talk) 19:04, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

Would you advise letting the article be deleted and waiting for some time to pass? The publication has been getting a wide distribution for several months and I do believe it is notable. It is a very well written publication that quickly is being subscribed to by members of the community. The talk page notes a number of subscribers, I'd have to look, but that is only a portion of the viewers who go to the site. I used the word "spoof" because of the humorous copy sent to the other publication to which several of the staff members came from. One copy sent as a joke seems more of a spoof to me than a hoax. I do believe that the publication deserves an article, but do not want to make a controversy over it. I'd like your opinion before I act (or decline to act) on the proposed deletion. _ _ _ _ 83d40m (talk) 20:06, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

Indef at ANI

After getting nvolved and then blocking as you said per this, it may be best to unblock him and let another admin do so over he course of the discussion. It would look better on your part too.Lihaas (talk) 04:20, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

that would be unnecessarily bureaucratic. If another admin wants to overturn the block, they can with the current unblock request. Personally I wouldn't recommend it (De72863 also see this thread User_talk:Jimbo_Wales#Incivility). IRWolfie- (talk) 12:12, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
I don't see a need for that. An unblock request by Meowy has already been denied by another editor who justified my initial blocking per WP:IAR. De728631 (talk) 16:48, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Seeing as you are an administrator, are you involved in this situation at all? If not, could you try to resolve it? At this point, I think a block is reasonable. AutomaticStrikeout 21:05, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Miliband move

Hey, could you do me a small favor and make sure I did the move back properly? It looks okay to me, but I have little experience in this area. I'm not very experienced there either but I think it looks good. The logs and revision history are ok. And in case anyone objects, I don't see a point in nuking the edit summary with that deleted hoax name in it. The target page has a deletion log and the name's also recorded in the ANI thread, so let's leave it as is. But feel free to re-open the discussion if you like. Hey there! I wonder why you put a full protection on the article. It is a current even now and is included on the main page. I think partial protection would go.--Yerevanci (talk) 18:48, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Well, it's a news article. What did you expect? Also, new official statements are released every few hours and I don't think that full protection will do anything good keeping the article up to date. --Yerevanci (talk) 19:00, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
Whatever you say, sir. But what if I told you that most users don't bother to discuss the issues on the talk page?
Another great problem is racism. For example, User:Angel670's following comment "I see the page is being heavily edited by users of Armenian origin. I understand you hate Ramil Safarov...", should have been taken into notice and he must have been blocked, instead of fully protecting an important article. --Yerevanci (talk) 19:22, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
Did you bother you read the rest of my comment? It says "I see that you're of Azerbaijani origin and I understand you love Safarov?? How does that feel?!?". It was a sarcastic reply to his racist comment. The question marks are there for a reason.
Anything else should discussed on the article's talk page where it belongs. You obviously didnt get my point. What I said was that most users do not want to discuss. How is time going to change that? For example, there are dozens of facts on the talk page proving that the motive of the murder was ethnic hatred, although some users (incl. User:Brandmeister) still remove it and call it neutralism. He have been around since 2005 and its obviously conscious move.--Yerevanci (talk) 19:57, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
Anyway, thank you for your kind explanation! --Yerevanci (talk) 20:16, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Might it not perhaps be better to put semi-restriction on the article and impose a 1RR/week sanction on all editors who edit it? In its current state, the article is a mess. The grammar is terrible and the article is in dire need of some copyediting. For a topic that is now being fervidly discussed all over the news and internet, and even appears on the Wikipedia main page, I think that at least some edits should be made, at least under the supervision of some experienced third party editors. Just saying...--Marshal Bagramyan (talk) 21:13, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

That idea has some merit. Since the topic is an ongoing event we should at least try to present a gramatically correct page to the general reader. I'll bring this up at WP:ANI. De728631 (talk) 21:38, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
I support the idea! --Yerevanci (talk) 22:15, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Ethnic hatred

Hello. Thanks for the temporary protection of the article as it was edited in a non-neutral way by several users. Regarding your comment about ethnic hatred, I just wanted to point out that the issue was raised at the talkpage, where it was explained that the claim is not directly supported by source as required by relevant policy. I also pointed out that according to the source in question, Safarov rejected his evidence given in that source, so it cannot be used as a reference. Yet some users proceeded with reverts without satisfactory rationale at talkpage, trying to overcome the concerns. Brandmeistertalk 18:59, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Yes, you explained your point of view but WP:Consensus is something different. There were still objections being made on the talk page and as long as that is the case, nobody should claim that either fact is true and feel entitled to edit the article. Please continue your dispute on the article talk page, where it belongs. De728631 (talk) 21:26, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Confusing edit summary.

This had me thinking for a minute [3] GimliDotNet (Speak to me,Stuff I've done) 17:58, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I was a bit surprised too, but per Encyclopedia of Arda Gimli is the name of a hall in Asgard, not one of the dwarves in the Edda [4]. And reliability aside, at de.wiki there's a list of all the dwarves from the Seeress' Prophecy that doesn't mention any Gimli in the original context: de:Dvergatal. So I decided to mention the Prophecy as an example of old Norse literature since that book by Solopova only mentions the dwarvish names from The Hobbit and Gandalf, not Gimli. Sorry, but how is removing a section that is not related to the subject matter of the article vandalism??? I made it clear in my edit summary that the sources that are used in this section do not mention Ramil Safarov, and in fact some of them are just bogus (they don't even support what the preceeding sentence is saying). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.221.149.121 (talk) 19:05, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

The vandalism charge wasn't only directed at you but Safarov is in fact mentioned in the very first source you removed. Other than that, such large and contested removals of text should be discussed on the article's talk page. De728631 (talk) 19:10, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Then please look at the first sentence and the source. The first sentence says "Although Ramil Safarov is not a terrorist and only murdered Gurgen Margarian". Nothing, Zero about this in the source. The second part of the sentence is then sourced to a youtube, and down the quality of this section goes from there. But I guess that I did not discuss the removal of such a high quality section makes me a vandal in your eyes. Thanks, and enjoy editing wikipedia. I am done here after such a nice welcome. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.221.149.121 (talk) 19:16, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

That kind of text is not vandalism per definition but it's a content related issues that you should have discussed before deleting it. Your removal was ill-advised and at the verge of vandalism, definitely edit warring. And as I said above, there are other cases. Over and out. De728631 (talk)

What kind of tone is that? Over and out indeed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.221.149.121 (talk) 19:47, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Help request

Hello new admin. I congratulate you and wish you success. I hope you will rapidly become one of the "5 star" admins of WP known for their help to the other users. I am an old (by age, almost) but rather new (by experience, joined several months ago) user who has a lot of difficulty using the technical gadgets of WP like tags, templates etc. So help me you. Please. I have been involved in a heated discussion at the talk page of the article "Occupation of Smyrna". Indeed the "heat" is more on the edits and counter-edits of the article itself, rather than the discussion page, as you may see. (I am almost discussing by/with myself there. :-) One user complained of me to the Edit Warring Noticeboard but I understand the admins there are not convinced of me being a "warrior". (On the other hand, if the reverts on the said page are examined carefully I am afraid the user who accused me is in worse situation than this scribe, as regards especially those reverts which have not been duly argued upon. Anyhow, to cut a long story short, there is a dispute over there which I wish to take to dispute resolution or arbitration or to the good offices of the UN Sec. General. :-) The problem is, I looked at the relevant admin-forum pages and could not understand how to fill a request in none. I regret there was no computers when I was in my learning age, at least around my neigborhood. So I request you kindly to do me a simple (I believe, for an experienced user) favour: Please take the article to the relevant booard (Arbcom or Dispute Resoution or ...?) in my name. I mean, I know you would not do something in your own name if you are not convinced on it or have no interest in the topic, so please put this article in the relevant discussion board, noting there that it is upon my request and has nothing to do with you, other than helping me overcome difficulties stemming from inexperience. For "presentation or introduction" you can please just copy from the said discussion page my talk under the title "1920 coming before 1919". (I am afraid if we alter a basic concept like time/chronology some WP articles will be confusing for our readers.)

This is my first help request from a new admin. Thanks in advance and I reiterate my best wishes... --E4024 (talk) 22:41, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Hello E4024. First of all it would be very helpful to know which of the many sections on that article's talk page you are referring to. I can find your name in at least two longish discussions there and "1920 coming before 1919" is actually too short to be referred to dispute resolution, not to mention that a formal "dispute resolution" is very far up on the ladder of Wikipedia's process of conflict resolution and doesn't seem to be needed yet from what I could see from a quick at the talk page. What I recommend here is the following: in the talk page section that you would like to have moderated or where you need additional input from uninvolved editors, you can file a request for comments. Please put the following string in there, right below the section heading:
{{rfc|hist|pol}}
This will cause the article's name to appear on two lists, requests for comments (rfc) on historical topics and rfc on political topics. Experienced editors who work in those areas will then jump in and comment on the matter. This may take a while to proceed but in my opinion it is much less drama than filing for a dispute resolution. De728631 (talk) 17:24, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
Thank you very much for the information. At last some discussion seems to be beginning there recently. (Maybe they were waiting for me to be blocked. :-) --E4024 (talk) 00:55, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
Heey, I just used that thing in another article's talk page. I hope I will not forget the appliance again. Thanks... --E4024 (talk) 11:02, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

Advice on Amon Amarth

Hi De, I'm thinking of applying for permanent semi protection on Amon Amarth, if you look at the edit-history it's one long (all be it slow) edit war regarding their musical genre. Do you think this would have any chance of succeeding? GimliDotNet (Speak to me,Stuff I've done) 05:35, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

Meh, I can see where you're coming from but I'm not very optimistic this would pass. The edit war is in fact that slow that I think it's easier to fix the occasional issues than to get a permanent semi-protection. :/ Maybe Wikipedia:WikiProject Music/Music genres task force could be bothered to lend a helping hand with reverting when it's needed. Archiving of Ramil Safarov talk page

Hi, I noticed that some of the topics on the talk page of this article had no replies for years: Notability and References. And some of them are no relevant any longer: Axe photo (an image of a typical axe is no longer needed as a link to the actual murder weapon is now provided), Possible fork (the forked article was already merged into this article due to another discussion), Extradition and pardon section (Extradition and pardon of Ramil Safarov article has now been removed). There were also some minor requests when the article was under the full protection. They were implemented without a discussion and are no longer relevant as this article is not fully protected any more: Edit request on 5 September 2012 and 2 edit requests.

So I suggest to move these topics to the archive. I never created archives myself, though I may give it a try. Or would you prefer to do it yourself? And should these topics be discussed before being archived or the reasons for their archiving are obvious enough? Thank you. --Daniel (talk) 05:10, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

An auto-archiver has just been added to this talk page. Are you already acting out on my request or is it just a coincedence that somebody added this auto-archiver 14 minutes after my previous message? --Daniel (talk) 05:34, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
I happen to have this page in my watch-list and saw the request so jumped in a did it :) GimliDotNet (Speak to me,Stuff I've done) 05:47, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
I see. But I would rather still wait for the decision of De728631 regarding my suggestion above. He is overseeing this article, which has seen a lot of controversy before, and I don't want any of my actions to contribute to it. Thank you. --Daniel (talk) 05:56, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
I wouldn't worry about it, archiving is not a contentious issue - 90 days after the last person comments on a section it will be archived and readily available via the archive boxes. GimliDotNet (Speak to me,Stuff I've done) 06:59, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
Yes, but according to WP:ARCHIVE a consensus ought to be reached before setting up the automatic archival on the article's talk page. Thank you, GimliDotNet for your contribution and your desire to help, but I still would want to hear from De728631. --Daniel (talk) 09:52, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
Indeed, auto-archiving of article talks should be approved by consensus. I've removed the archive template for the time being, but don't wait for me to jump in. Feel free to discuss this on the article's talk page and restore the bot template when you've reached consensus. De728631 (talk) 11:33, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Edit Warring at Croatian language

Within 10 minutes of you blocking User:AurgelmirCro at Croatian language, he showed up as an anonymous user and made this threat for continued edit warring and then reverted the article again here. I was on Wikipedia:Translators available and notice that you were on the list for German to English translators and wondered if you could translate and add materials from de:Manuel von Portugal and de:Emilia von Oranien-Nassau to their English articles and create articles for their two children de:Manuel António von Portugal and de:Mauritia Eleonora von Portugal and their spouse de:Johanna von Hanau-Münzenberg and de:Georg Friedrich (Nassau-Siegen). If you can't I will understand. Thank you!--The Emperor's New Spy (talk) 23:20, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

That's quite some work and I'm a bit busy at the moment. But I think I'll start with translating those articles step by step. It's going to take some time though. De728631 (talk) 12:22, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
You should include the information relevant to Emilia on her article and the stuff about Manuel on his article. Most of the stuff that speaks about the family or their marriage should go on both articles. There is no need to merge the two. --The Emperor's New Spy (talk) 18:10, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

Indoor Cricket

You deleted a picture of a set up of UK indoor cricket, specifically because you say there is a free version available, therefore wikipedia fair usage policy is no longer applicable. This is great news! Please upload this image today and let me know as soon as you have done so. Are you able to see the equipment quite well?

Thanks 16:28, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

I disagree. Its impossible to convey the nature of a sport as well in 10,000 words as it is in a single picture. Here are the facts: a) this picture is necessary b) there are no other pictures freely available c) you don't know nearly enough about cricket to be able to dispute either a) or b) Probably the best thing for you to do now is to undelete the picture asap and apologise. Thank you in advance for doing this Py0alb (talk) 21:26, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

You claim a free picture already exists... what evidence do you have for this claim? Where is this mysterious picture that only you know about? Py0alb (talk) 13:38, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Unfortunately, that's a different version of the sport and hence completely irrelevant. Please have another try at finding a suitable picture, and if not, upload the picture you erroneously deleted. Its ok to admit you made a mistake, we all make mistakes. Where the violation occurs is in ignoring wikipedia protocol.

I'm curious... Did you genuinely think I wasn't aware of that picture, given the extensive work I've done to improve that page? Its hard not to take offence at your maintain the assumption of good faith in this case.

Py0alb (talk) 15:25, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi De, you just accused me of wp:point, a very serious accusation. Please could you either provide some diffs of wikipedia pages I have disrupted in order to prove a point or withdraw your accusation? The page gives some helpful examples of the kind of diffs you need to provide as evidence.

Thanks very much Py0alb (talk) 10:06, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

Ok, so do you withdraw the inaccurate and inappropriate accusation of wp:point? The fact that I've had to repeatedly ask several editors before finally getting an adequate explanation is a sign of previous editors incompetence or intransigence, it has nothing to do with me. Perhaps if you had given a coherent explanation the first time instead of throwing accusations around, this entire argument could have been averted. As it is, you and the other editors involved owe me an apology. Py0alb (talk) 12:58, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

Page deleted

Good Morning,

I am pretty new to creating and editing things on Wikipedia. My first page that I worked on was the page on EDDIE ADAMSON that was deleted after discussion. I was just wondering why? I was trying to put together a page on people from the Panhandle that serve on statewide boards, commissions, and things like that but if those don't meet the criteria then I need to find some new things to work on and put together for Wikipedia.

Thanks for any information and help. SteveJWilson580 (talk) 11:32, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

Hello. As I could see from the deletion discussion about Eddie Adamson's article, this person was apparently not notable enough for inclusion on Wikipedia. Likewise I'd like to point out that Wikipedia is not a directory, so a list of people from the Panhandle that fill official positions may also not be sufficiently enclopedic. Instead you could perhaps try to improve existing articles about politicians and notable officials from the Panhandle (by the way, which Panhandle do you mean, TX or OK?). Please note though that articles about living persons must be backed up with verifiable and reliable sources, especially when the content may be controversial. De728631 (talk) 11:53, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi

Do you think this action is a little harsh.

Disruptive editing is not a good enough reason.

I get a feeling you treat Wikipedia as your home.

NFUR template work

Thanks for helping with the NFUR template changes, and for teaching me new stuff. I left one note already on my talk page, but thought I'd return the favour by pointing out the meta-template {{File other}} which simplifies the code required for such changes.

While I was here I noticed your RfA. I thought I had a decent outcome on mine, but yours was really impressive!

It was a pleasure working with you. – Fayenatic London 20:15, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Bruno Mars Marry You cover.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Bruno Mars Marry You cover.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:19, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

Celebros, (restored redirect; no indication that the company meets our notability guidelines)

Hi De728631.

I have noticed you reverted all the changes I made to the page "celebros".

the reason was " no indication that the company meets our notability guidelines " can you please elaborate?

I decided to edit that page after I was looking for information about that company and about Natural Language Processing (NLP) searching engines.

I have noticed that other companies from the same field (like SLI), have their own page and decided to add one myself (with the intention to add other articles in the future, so this is a good case study).

I also received a message regarding my user name, I just used the name of the first page I edited, I have no connection with that company and I want to change the name to any other username that does not violate our policy.

Please advise, thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Celebroswiki (talkcontribs) 12:08, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi there. Notability is established by referencing multiple reliable sources that are independent of the subject and have reported about it. This may be repeated in-depth nationwide news coverage or feature articles in magazines or books. Most blogs and self-published internet pages do not meet our criteria for reliable sources. But if you can provide such references about Celebros we can possibly restore the entry about this company.
As to your username, to change it to a new name, please visit this site and follow the instructions. An editor with special management rights will then rename your account. To check if a name is already taken, try to search for User:... in the Wikipedia search field. And on another note, please sign your contributions to talk pages like this one by typing four tilde characters ~~~~. That will add your username and a timestamp for reference. Do not sign any article text though. If you have more questions, please feel free to ask them here. De728631 (talk) 13:31, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

Files and WP:CSD#G4

I wasn't aware that FFD discussions were applicable discussions for CSD G4. Also that FFD seems oddly no-consensusy to me.—Ryulong (琉竜) 16:45, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

No problem, some time ago I was very surprised myself when an Afd was speedily closed under some CSD aspect. But WP:CSD does explicitely mention files among the candidates of any "general" CSD. As to BornToDieParadise.png, I find that strange too but I suppose Schumin was judging from the WP:NFCC#8 point of view and thought that the image was not significantly improve the reader's understanding of the article. He could've expanded his deletion rationale but then I won't challenge that. If you feel though that the Born To Die Paradise image should be brought back, please go ahead and ask Schumin for his motivation of that particular closure. SPI

Thank you for your recent work at SPI. I noticed that you reverted one of your own closures to an SPI. Please feel free to close SPIs as you see fit. (as in closures from admins who are not clerks are perfectly ok) The help of patrolling administrators such as yourself makes our job easier. If you would like, here is our set of administrator instructions for SPI, and feel free to stop by my talkpage if you have questions. -- DQ (ʞlɐʇ) 09:51, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Thank you. I undid some of my closures because I had come across a guideline that said SPIs should exclusively be closed by clerks. It's not the standard admin instructions since there's no such strict rule over there; however that page advises admins to leave the closing to clerks. Anyhow, if you guys are ok with it I will help you close some cases. De728631 (talk) 14:05, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
If you point me to where it says that, i'll modify it. Because we are barely surviving in case load, and we don't need cases left open for no reason. If everything looks taken care of, then there is no need for it to stay open. But ya, speaking for what I think is the opinion of the majority of the current SPI team, we have no issues with admins closing SPIs. -- DQ (ʞlɐʇ) 22:26, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
Here it says that "Some SPI tasks should be done by Clerks and Checkusers only", which includes "formally closing and de-listing (archiving) cases". I suggest that you limit this to archiving cases and allow the closing procedure as an option for admins. De728631 (talk) 10:52, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, I have done so. I don't know exactly where that has come from, but admins are usually smart enough to know when to close things and when to leave it for a clerk. -- DQ (ʞlɐʇ) 22:37, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi De728631, is it possible to have the removal of the article undone? Lotje (talk) 17:56, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

The article was deleted because someone questioned the notability of the subject. If you can provide multiple independent and reliable references that have reported about Daskalidès then you could rewrite a new article. Please note that the homepage of daskalides.be alone does not establish notability. We need something like feature articles in newspapers, books, magazines. Unfortuenately the Dutch article doesn't have any convincing sources either. De728631 (talk) 18:21, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Wuxi County pictures

All the new pictures on Wuxi County(My Homtown)are come from the www.cqwuxi.cn which is a free site to get pictures, if you are questioning this issue, you could contact the admin of wuxi website for the clearance, ok?kongshengxin (talk) 21:10, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

That is not the way Wikipedia works. The burden of evidence is on your side. So please do contact the webmaster of that site and have them send an email as described in WP:Consent. Please note also that "free image repositories" may be free of charge but are most often limited to personal use. Images for use on Wikipedia must be licensed in a way that allows commercial reuse. So unless you can provide evidence that the original author (not you) has issued a free license for these images, we'll have to delete them. The same is also valid for your images on Commons. De728631 (talk) 21:17, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

Yes, that is one reason I like wikipedia most, the people in China do not speak English, I am a foreign student here in Manila, Philippines, I know how to speak English well, so that's Y i am contributing to the English wikipedia for those non-Chinese speakers(They only can get this information if he know Chinese, Wuxi County is not a big place like Shanghai, all the information of Wuxi County is given in Chinese only)

I would ask the admin send a letter to you, but it is in Chinese, shall I translate for you? Or you can simply add admin QQ, his No. is 8199477. For what is qq? see www.imqq.comkongshengxin (talk) 21:25, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

Well, this depends on the type of license the website is using. If the website has a general policy that allows for free reuse, e.g. similar to Creative Commons, then it is sufficient that you attribute the original photographer and provide a weblink to both the free license on that site and to each original image that you used.
However, if the images on that site are licensed individually by the photographers, then each photographer needs to send an email in English to permissions-en@wikimedia.org for the images you uploaded here at Wikipedia. If they cannot easily write in English then you should forward their original emails with a translation to that address. Thank you. De728631 (talk)

Re: Fishwife image

I'm not the blogger that posted that photograph; if I remember correctly I gave copies of some of the developed photos of Fishwife shows I had to Chris Prescott a few years ago for him to scan and put on his website, and it does not surprise me that the photos have been re-posted since images of Fishwife shows are hard to come by on the Internet. This could theoretically represent a conflict of interest since I'm loosely acquainted with the drummer of the band but I think I made the Fishwife article pretty NPOV. --SlimJimJones (talk) 06:28, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi De728631, if you're not doing so already, could you help me fix the incoming links to Rohan? I suspect most will need to go to Rohan (Middle-earth), but not all will. Thanks, BDD (talk) 18:28, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Meh. I think we should rather have a bot do that. IIRC there are dozens if not hundreds of links from Middle-earth pages. De728631 (talk) 18:32, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
The bots can take care of the double redirects, but can they filter other incoming links to Rohan based on where they're actually supposed to go? I didn't think there were such sophisticated bots. --BDD (talk) 18:36, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
You may be right there. Alright, let's start working the list. I'll start at the top and work downwards, so could you begin at the end of the list and work your way up? De728631 (talk) 18:41, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
Will do. I'm going to finish a similar task from the move of Mercy (song) and get back to Rohan in a bit. --BDD (talk) 18:56, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Kosovo

Even when you clicl names like Basque,Abkazia, Osetis and small enclaves that are not known it comes up their flag and populations.Kosovo is a country recognised by 93 other countries ad does deserve to have it's flag and anthem posted to her name.Who are we to decide to put it or not when people of Kosovo have spoken in referendum in early 90 and in war 98 and 99 where more than 1 million people were expeled from Kosovo, they deserve more than a flag and anthem beside Kosovan name. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.1.100.5 (talk) 09:22, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

The article for the country of Kosovo is at Republic of Kosovo where the flag is displayed. Kosovo is entirely for the geographical region and does not warrant the display of any flag and anthem, be it Serbian or Kosovar or whatever. Please note also that the Basque Country is not an independent state and is spread across the territories of two sovereign states, so showing the traditional common flag in the related articles is acceptable. The Abkhazia article is not split into country versus region like Kosovo, so that's not an argument either. The Kosovo situation at the English Wikipedia is very special and it has been decided per discussion to not have a flag or anthem in the article on the region. As an admin you do not only get a crappy T-shirt but also receive many help requests. Here is the newest: The article Izmir was renamed lately, changing the initial İ to I. I have been moving some articles related to Izmir to the new name. For instance: List of parks in Izmir. I could not do the same with "İzmir International Fair" though, for there must be a re-direct or something. Could you please kindly change the initial İ to I in that article? Lego LOTR

Hello De728631,

You stated as part of your edit summary today on the LOTR lego page: "no live weblink per WP:EL since the catalogue includes prices for online sale".

I was confused with this, as I presumed that all web sources should be URL-linked if possible. This presumption appears to be correct, as upon looking at WP:EL, the last statement in the intro is this:

"This guideline concerns external links that are not citations to sources supporting article content. If the website or page to which you want to link includes information that is not yet a part of the article, consider using it as a source for the article, and citing it. Guidelines for sourcing, which includes external links used as citations, are discussed at Wikipedia:Reliable sources and Wikipedia:Citing sources."

.

So it appears that WP:EL can't restrict the use of a merchandise catalogue like LEGO's from being URL-linked as a reference. So unless some other policy or guideline restricts that usage, I believe you should add the URL to that reference. --ɱ (talk) 20:37, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Well, linking to commercial sites is still generally frowned upon, see also this featured article review: "We don't link to a commerical [sic] bookseller (Amazon.com)", "url removed; ISBN added". There's always a smack of spam and NPOV when you link to an online shop, even for sourcing. I haven't tried it but the link may even end up at Wikipedia:WikiProject Spam/LinkReports/lego.com. That aside, we don't even need weblinks for citing sources. Verifiability means that you'll have to be able to verify the content of a source. And with the information provided anyone can do that by going to Lego.com off-wiki and look at their catalog. De728631 (talk) 21:21, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
One of the biggest reasons why I bothered to comment was that I in fact did try to find the reference material, but couldn't actually find it online. And truthfully, I'm usually rather good with that :/ . I do have the paper lego catalogues, which I'd suggest citing instead of the web cite w/o a URL. Can you link it to me here? I'll do the rest. --ɱ (talk) 22:02, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
PS okay now I found it, and Google didn't help any more than I already could.--ɱ (talk) 22:02, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Yes, you actually have to walk through Lego's online shop to find the catalogues. Glad you found them now. De728631 (talk) 22:13, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

 Done--ɱ (talk) 23:29, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

This blocked user continues to file one unblock request after another when they get turned down, and has now filed a helpme request for "an experienced admin who is willing to do some investigating." At the same time, he manipulates the discussion of his abuse by selectively deleting comments by other users from the discussion (and also engages in personal attacks). I thought there was some policy somewhere that a blocked user cannot delete (or manipulate like this) a discussion of their abuse during their block (and numerous unblock requests)? Also, judging from his behaviour on his talk page after his block, including his incivility and his apparent refusal to get the point regarding the BLP issue as half a dozen people have explained to him, an extension of the block might be appropriate. Jeannedeba (talk) 07:05, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Boing has revoked talk page access for the remainder of the block. Let's give one more chance and see what they do next: if it's still no sign of getting the point, just more insults, admin-shopping and WP:IDHT then an indef will be in order. JohnCD (talk) 11:18, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
My thoughts exactly, but to be honest, I'm rather sceptical right now. It doesn't look like he's going to hear the messages anytime soon. Anyhow, thank you both for keeping me informed. De728631 (talk) 12:44, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

One interesting fact too: The brand new account User:Sarah Baartman, who apparently now shows up to "support" User:Trio The Punch ("Bad admins have caused more damage on Wikipedia")[5], shows striking similarities to the latter (interest in the reference desk, only a couple of insignificant edits before coming to his defence now, userpage created today). This looks very much like someone supporting himself or trying to evade justice. For the record, here is the latest version of the now deleted discussion of the block.[6] Jeannedeba (talk) 15:03, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

Very interesting indeed. Thank you for pointing this out. De728631 (talk) 15:09, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

Hello Sir ! I happened to take a look on the article of "Chile". As You may know there was a military coup in this country on 9.September 1973, at which general Pinochet got in to power and the socialist (but not communist) Alliende was killed -among many others. Atleast in Sweden and Denmark this coup was described as a "fascist coup". And if f.i. Franco in Spain and Papadoupolos in Greece were concidered as fascists, then I fail to see how the former Pinochet regime cannot be reguarded to have been reguarded as such. (This applies ofcourse also to Argentina 1976-1983, if You ask me) Hence I made a new headline and added the following centence (at a rather well fitting place in the text):

"This was with the support of the CIA and the US Secretary of State, dr Henry Kissinger."

referring to theeses sources (of which I've could gather 100's).

This was first rejected by user E4024 due to an unfortunate misspelling of the word "fascism". After a second attempt with correct spelling user E4024 now rejected my edit again with the following argument:

"Beware: Your edits are on the brink of vandalism."

I do appriciate that the article is semi-protected. But I even my self remeber the criticism against Kissinger when he got the Peace Prize (same year or 1974 ?) due to the allegations of his involvement with Pinochet. And today, even if the CIA still claimbs to have nothing to do with the coup, I would say that the balance of evidences as of 2012, point to the direction that my text is correct. However could I (wise after the event) refrased my text to f.i. "alleged to be with the support of..". But my primary concern is not the my attempt to edit the text, and I really do not want to be silly, nore am I fond of "editational wars" (I sooner give up). But from user E4024's user page I can see that he/she has been blocked atleast once before, and my prime concern is - Is user E4024 right to threaten me in this case ?

When editing articles I usually do use a dictionary to be on the safe side, though not this time. At talk pages I usually do not use dictionaries. (the word "threaten" seems strange in writing, by the way) I want no favors, just fair comments (possible abouth both my edit and sources) but mainly about the manors of user E4024, if possible. regaurds Boeing720 (talk) 00:25, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
Hrm. From this edit of yours one could in fact think that you were acting in bad faith, but now that you have explained you motivation to me I think you were just a bit too quick. Not only did you restore an unreferenced claim (fascist coup) but you accidentally duplicated an existing paragraph. So E4024 cannot be blamed in this case. While the coup may have been known as a fascist plot in Scandinavia and elsewhere, we do need reliable references for that phrase. So far, the article only mentions a "military" coup. And this source you mentioned above actually denies the involvement of the CIA: "We find no information... that CIA or the Intenlligence Community was involved in the death of Chilean President Salvador Allende." On the other hand, Mark Curtis seems to be an authority when it comes to political publishing, so his self-published blog would be acceptable as a source.
So when you have found some reliable sources that call the plot a fascist operation you should start a thread on the article's talk page and present your proposed edits. Another possibility would be adding a concluding sentence at the bottom of the coup section like: "The coup and the subsequent government under Pinochet have been labeled as fascist by X and Y".(reference). (I think "E4024" in the section title should be changed to "Boeing720", at least that is faster... :-) Joke in parenthesis apart, the user did not duplicate but "triplicated" the piece. What would I think? I thought they were test edits. Is a triplication different from "blanking"? --E4024 (talk) 12:57, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
Thank You for the fast reply. About sources I would like to add that
http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/news/20000919/index.html

Infact is US National Security Archive. This contains a repport of CIA (also refered to), US govenment and Chile. It could be reguarded as a minimum of what CIA was up to in Chile for during the 60's, 70's and a bit longer. Now this document is long. But by page 10 I find "The Schneider Assassination" part very interesting. "CIA and the government were aware and agreed" to this killing of Pinochet's predecessor as military commander. And page 13, clearly states that "CIA had knowlidge about the coup" atleast 24 hrs before the coup, but still did nothing to warn the democratical elected president about this. This is an absolute minimum of the CIA involvement/support. Spooks never admit more than what's absolutelly necessary). I think this issues is enough, and more so if the whole document is studied. But as I stated before, I'm never searching for editorial war. Thanks again Boeing720 (talk) 21:18, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Sorry to forgotten this comment first time. Conc. pure technical matters. After my first saving I noticed that I've misspelled "Henry" (Kissinger). And corrected that. Then my edit was rejected, with a comment that suggested to me that the reason for the rejection was the misspelling of the word "facsism". Then I corrected the spelling to "fascism" and saved it again. I do not understand "triplicated". But I'm sorry for errors concerning technical matters. And about fascism as such, I do not confuse fascism with nazism as communists did. (Atleast that was the case in the USSR). I never anticipated a difference between a "military junta" whitout much other agenda than to get rid of democracy - and fascism. I fail to see that a fascist general and junta leader must declare himself as such in order to be one. Wasn't Spain 1939-76, Portugal ?-1974, Argentina 1976-83 and Greece 1967-74 fascistic countries eighther, I cannot help to wonder ? But I'm sorry for errors and Your time. Also reguards to User E4024. (I did understand the speed joke, actually quite funny, due to my username. And I don't think You're troublesome. Sorry)Boeing720 (talk) 02:50, 12 December 2012 (UTC)Boeing720 (talk) 02:53, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Hand-coding

Hey all :).

I'm dropping you a note because you've been involved in dealing with feedback from the Article Feedback Tool. To get a better handle on the overall quality of comments now that the tool has become a more established part of the reader experience, we're undertaking a round of hand coding - basically, taking a sample of feedback and marking each piece as inappropriate, helpful, so on - and would like anyone interested in improving the tool to participate :).

You can code as many or as few pieces of feedback as you want: this page should explain how to use the system, and there is a demo here. Once you're comfortable with the task, just drop me an email at okeyes@wikimedia.org and I'll set you up with an account :).

If you'd like to chat with us about the research, or want live tutoring on the software, there will be an office hours session on Monday 17 December at 23:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office connect. Hope to see some of you there! Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 23:16, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
