Arizona, LOCATOR Dot's, 50 states

(Boy, getting a TEAM barnstar...good work!-(you might need it to help fix THIS problem)) I've just put the locator DOT maps on: Talk:Four Corners Monument and the original (2nd talk page)(3rd, 1st was Talk: Aravaipa Creek), 2nd talk: Talk:Dendora Valley. The SIZING map problem is quite obvious.... and for all 50 states, DOT's near a state's center (THIS is on the STATE, .svg Maps), near the center will be close, (the 1 accurate spot the very center of the map itself)... anyway, the first person I contacted was User:Hmains. I'll update him with this same message. [And refer him to Talk:Four Corners Monument, (as well as where I had him check earlier)..] (from the HOT sonoranDesert, ArizonaUSA)....Mmcannis (talk) 02:43, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

I don't think it's the map. See the Talk:Four Corners Monument page for my contribution. - Denimadept (talk) 04:37, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Nichols Montgomery Powers

Hi, you might remember some editing assistance you helped me with on the Old Blenhiem Bridge page back in May, as I suggested then, I located and photographed Mr Powers grave on a trip through the area. What to do with this irrefutable information to help eradicate the unfortunate mistake people have made over time, in unnecessarily "correcting" the mans name is the question now - http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NicholsPowersGS.jpg JosephGJohnson (talk) 15:04, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Yes, it's kinda hard to refute the people at the time, who likely knew the guy. - Denimadept (talk) 16:02, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Talk page revert

Hi. I saw that you made a revert on my user talk page. I wasn't quite sure why though. Did you think that the comment related to the Forth Bridge article? Cordless Larry (talk) 17:45, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Yes. That's where it was. - Denimadept (talk) 17:47, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Ah, OK. The editor who left the comment is relatively new and probably didn't know how to start a new section. They were suggesting moving African immigrants to Sweden, not Forth Railway Bridge, to African diaspora to Sweden, it just wasn't that clear! Cordless Larry (talk) 18:15, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
That makes more sense. Nooooooooobs. Whaddya gonna do. :-D - Denimadept (talk) 19:11, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Troll use

I was not familiar with the word troll. You referred to me with that word, in a Frank Pepe discussion a few weeks ago. I just found out its meaning in internet contexts, and I'm surprised. Did you really find my comments inflammatory, derogatory or provocative?--Gciriani (talk) 21:54, 30 November 2010 (UTC)

Yes. - Denimadept (talk) 00:08, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

I'm sorry you felt attacked, it was not my intention. I was just expressing ideas on the article itself, and it had nothing to do with you. What are the words in particular that made you feel attacked? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gciriani (talkcontribs) 03:13, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

I didn't say or agree that I felt attacked. I found your comments "inflammatory, derogatory [and] provocative". - Denimadept (talk) 07:46, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

Sorry to keep asking, but can you pinpoint one of the sentences that are either inflammatory, derogatory or provocative? I keep going through what I wrote, to understand what triggered yours and Marvs88's reaction, but all I see is referred to the article.--Gciriani (talk) 19:13, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

What you wrote, as a whole, was "inflammatory, derogatory [and] provocative". Go back and read what we wrote for an explanation. If that's not clear, I'm not sure what to tell you. - Denimadept (talk) 20:39, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

Usenet

Easy answer: as I wrote at the editors talkpage and in the edit history: The ASCII art-image was totally destroyed since Autoed didn't check such images. (I will write a bug report). The problem is that you/the editor should look over with the preview function BEFORE the edit was successfully sent! mabdul 22:12, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

I apologize for that, I did not notice that it changed the image, or that it was ASCII art. I did check the edit, and previewed it, but I didn't notice that the photograph was changed. The issue is probably due to the auto correction of unnecessary spaces. I will take that into account if I find any more ASCII art. Best, Alpha Quadrant talk 22:26, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Let's move the discussion there! mabdul 09:18, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

Berkley Bridge

Hello, I came across your photo of the new temporary Berkley Dighton bridge and was surprised to see that you are not a 'local'. How did you come to be in a position to photograph our mighty span? But actually I am asking for advice. What is the best software to use on a mac to teach a 9 year old (my son) how to begin programming? I can program but am unsure of the products available and thought I might ask you. thanks for your time. Bruce Bodner — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bebgsurg (talkcontribs) 23:42, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

I just moved away in September. I'm going to miss seeing the new bridge.
I have no idea how to start a 9-yo in programming. Things have changed a lot since I was 9. You can download XCode from Apple, but that would be dropping him in the deep end, as that's the regular set of tools for programming the Mac. Professionals use it for building commercial programs. Granted, he doesn't have use all of it at the beginning. Maybe learn it yourself, then show him how to use simple things, like C procedural programming. You might consider which language would be appropriate for him to start with. Maybe Eiffel for pure OOP? Perl? I really can't say, having never tried to teach programming to a kid. When I was a kid, the options were much more limited. I started with BASIC, which I wouldn't recommend now. C kicks butt, but I'd really try to start him on a reasonable path, using something object oriented. Eiffel is good, but I don't know if it's right for anyone. - Denimadept (talk) 01:52, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

Jack LaLanne

Hi Denimadept

You re-inserted the {{recent death}} template with a comment that the template's applicability is based on "not the quantity of editors but the edits" However, this is directly contradicted by the template's documentation, which states "this template should only be used when many editors (perhaps a hundred or more) are editing the article on the same day."

I am removing the template again. Please don't re-insert it again unless the article's editing frequency (by unique editors) increases to near the articulated threshold.

Regards, Bongomatic 22:37, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

As you wish. It's not important enough to me to fight to the death over this. :-D - Denimadept (talk) 03:15, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Vandalism warnings

Hey, I just noticed you giving a level 2 and then a level 3 warning to anon ip 85.210.103.45, but that person has not in fact edited since the level 1 waring I gave them at 19:41. You don't need to give a warning for every piece of vandalism; if they stop after a warning, just leave it. --BelovedFreak 20:26, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

I'm a firm believer in spanking, but I understand your point. - Denimadept (talk) 21:30, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
Looks like the warnings worked. What I see there in the edit history shows me that my aim was accomplished. I love banning vandals. Love it. - Denimadept (talk) 22:37, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
That's one way to look at it I suppose. I'm not sure that I (or our guidelines) agree with your point of view, but as you say, if your aim was to get someone blocked, it may well have worked.--BelovedFreak 08:39, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
In reality, usually it's just a way to say we noticed, don't do that. - Denimadept (talk) 14:31, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Buffalo nickel

Thanks for that. Perhaps you could put it at the first mention of a money amount in the article? Many thanks,--Wehwalt (talk) 19:03, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

I didn't? Checking... I did. Or am I missing something? - Denimadept (talk) 19:09, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
The $2,500 a little before it? And the output reads a little funny. Can't it just say $14,800 or whatever the amount is.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:27, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
This is referring to that $2,500. It says after "which he would be paid $2,500 (US$56.7 thousand in present terms[14]) for his work." The $2,500 is approximately $56.7K now. I copied the syntax from Harvard Bridge, which seems to have been accepted both there and here, when I made the change the day this article was Featured. - Denimadept (talk) 21:00, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
No, you're right. I'd rather have it as US$56,700 but I'm lousy at templates. I may have someone else look at it to see if that can be accomplished as a more natural statement. Thank you for bearing with me.--Wehwalt (talk) 13:41, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Oh that. No argument here! I really don't like the way it does that. - Denimadept (talk) 16:01, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Me neither. Let me see if I can change it or find someone who can. Thanks for your help, as always.--Wehwalt (talk) 16:10, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
What I actually want is a way to display the converted value such that $2,500 doesn't change to something like $56,432.43. It should change to $56,000, or round up to $57,000, paying attention to significant digits. - Denimadept (talk) 17:46, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Agreed. There may be documentation on this template someplace. I will look later tonight if I'm not too tired.--Wehwalt (talk) 17:48, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Let's play with this:

US$2,500 (US$81,750 in present terms[1]) is what we have now.

US$2,500 (now US$81,800) r=-2

US$2,500 (now US$82,000) r=-3

US$2,500 (now US$80,000) r=-4

US$2,500 (now US$100,000) r=-5

_________ You did it! Well done.--Wehwalt (talk) 05:26, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

Thank you, thank you verra much. Hm, what's a buffalo nickel worth these days... US$0.05 (now US$2) ...yikes. - Denimadept (talk) 14:38, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
Not sure it works out that cleanly!--Wehwalt (talk) 14:39, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

Jerusalem Chords Bridge

Do you know where I can find a transcript of the "Personal e-mail with Santiago Calatrava, LLC" cited on the Jerusalem Chords Bridge page? I am working on a research project on the bridge and saw your edit adding the info to the box on the side with the reference, so I assumed (perhaps incorrectly?) that you might have those emails. If you don't, do you know where I can get access to them? Thanks a bunch! --FinnKerrTheFirst (talk) 06:25, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

Brooklyn Bridge

I noticed you reverted the edits I made to the Brooklyn Bridge opening date. The infobox is now back to the version featuring two dates: May 23 and 24. Maybe it's a matter of defining exactly what a bridge "opening" is, but after doing research, by far the most commonly cited date is the 24th. Multiple contemporary newspapers report that this is the date the bridge was dedicated and that the opening ceremonies were held that evening. The one website using the 23rd as the date is unclear about where it gets that info. This is a minor discrepancy of course, but with Brooklyn's rich historical record, it seems strange we can't have the bridge's "opening" nailed down to one date. Batsarentbugs (talk) 02:08, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

If you specify one date, you need to be able to say no reliable sources exist for another date. It makes no real difference to me. If you disqualify the source which says the 23rd, you'll likely end up having to fix another person, like the person who made this edit, which, you'll notice if you step forward a few edits, I originally reverted. I tend to give someone the benefit of the doubt if I can find something which backs them, and just call it a discrepency between sources. It's up to someone else, like you, at that point to resolve the different sources if you can. Otherwise, we have to clarify it in the regular prose, like "dedicated and used on the 23rd by VIPs and opened to regular traffic on the 24th". I can't argue that the source containing "23rd" is a bit vague. There may be other sources which state the 23rd, but I stopped when I found one. - Denimadept (talk) 04:25, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
I see that you're trying to be fair to the user who found the 23 date, but the only source for that date probably shouldn't be considered reliable. Not only is that source ([1]) a secondary source that is heavily outnumbered by others, it contradicts itself when it uses May 24, 1983 as 100th anniversary. I have started a discussion on the article's talk page. Batsarentbugs (talk) 06:42, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

You are mistaken. See also WP:BLANKING which is quite explicit on the point. 86.44.23.169 (talk) 19:47, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
I see what you mean. Thing is, we can't be sure, in a situation like this, that "the user" has seen the warning. It was from a library, which could mean that the IP was, due to the way these things work, representative of several different machines in that building. - Denimadept (talk) 19:52, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

Teston Bridge

Thanks for the fix on the Teston Bridge article. I've polished it up a bit better, but I stand by my comments on the infobox talk page. The instructions are not clear that a non-standard way of calling the map is used. Mjroots (talk) 18:03, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

{{Location map}} is pretty standard, but I agree that the instructions in {{infobox bridge}} could be more comprehensive. I prefer the Location Map over the built-in map options. - Denimadept (talk) 18:36, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

Virtual Console

Hey there, and thanks for offering up your comments to the anon IP on his changes to the article for Virtual Console. Also, thanks for catching the typo, that appears to have been made here. There is a difference between Kiefer's typo and the changes this IP wants to make; I'm sure that Kiefer would also thank you for catching his typo, as would I had I made it. However, the words that this IP keeps wanting to add simply don't exist in common English. When questioned about them, he gets defensive and even questions our intelligence, instead of explaining exactly why his terminology (?) is better. Fortunately, he's apparently gotten down off his high horse in terms of the article, with no more edits since he received the final warning. --McDoobAU93 02:10, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I saw. I read the thread. He had some good input, but some of his stuff was off the wall. He just needs to calm down. - Denimadept (talk) 02:21, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

Highlander: The Series

What map scale do you desire? —Stepheng3 (talk) 04:37, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

One that works. The reverted version showed it at such a scale that England was visible. The scale, such as the one I gave it, shows the spot w/o additional clicks. Rounded, it goes back to seeing England. - Denimadept (talk) 04:53, 14 August 2011 (UTC)
As an accidental side-effect of the syntax errors, you were getting the closest possible scale before. I'll correct it again to give a very close scale. Sorry for any inconvenience. —Stepheng3 (talk) 19:19, 14 August 2011 (UTC)
That looks good. - Denimadept (talk) 19:29, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

"This thread is about this general topic, not specific problems people personally have with me not leaving edit summaries. Not everything is about me."– dont know how more clear I could have been that I didnt want it to become about a specific problem. If I had wanted it to I would have stated the specific context. I'm assuming good faith, but really perhaps in the future you should be more careful before doing such an action. AGF goes only so far.Camelbinky (talk) 23:13, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

I'm afraid that's not explicit enough to take note of, as it only says YOU don't want to be specific. You're not saying you have an issue if SOMEONE ELSE gets specific. - Denimadept (talk) 23:25, 14 August 2011 (UTC)
That's wikilawyering to the point of being disruption. You are trying to claim naivete or idiocy, when I am sure you are neither. What you did is plain and simply embarressment for the sake of embarressment. Please use more common sense in the future.Camelbinky (talk) 13:20, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
I'm sorry you feel that way. I read English. I don't read minds. You said what you said, not more than what you said. Why you'd be embarrassed by this I have no idea, and I'm not asking for an explanation. If you have an issue with what I said, you've brought it to my attention. - Denimadept (talk) 15:25, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

It's still Queensboro Bridge

And if you think I'm wrong on Queensboro Bridge, go ahead and look into Joe DiMaggio Highway. The Wikipedia page for this road still redicrects users to its old name, West Side Highway. Its unofficial, but it's still the popularly accepted name.

Another example is Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, which is officially Avenue of the Americas but the main Wikipedia page for this road is filed under Sixth Avenue.

Would you like to continue your ban threats against me, or will you recognize my argument? I live in New York, by the way. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.190.8.210 (talk) 15:03, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
